I was downloading pics off my phone a few days ago, and came across this snapshot from a few weekends ago. John and I brought a blanket to the park, listened to music nestled in the shade of a Live Oak tree, and daydreamed. After a while, the sun peeked out from behind the leafy greens and shone bright in my face. I squinted my eyes tight, let the smile spread across my face, and just felt content. Happy. One of my most favorite quotes in the whole wide world came to mind, with me sprawled out in the sunshine with my husband laying next to me. I snapped this pic so I could remember that moment.

Now I'm sharing it with you because this quote is a shining example of how to love....and how we all dream of being loved in return. Just beautiful.

Also...this might be one of the corniest posts I have ever written.

Annie Housewife & How To Craft a Perfect PR Pitch

As a blogger and PR gal, I'm no stranger to sending and receiving pitches. Most of the ones I receive are destined for a similar fate...the "insta-delete" (yes, I'm my own worst nightmare). However, a short, simple and personalized pitch from Adrian landed in my inbox about an hour ago, introducing me to Annie Housewife. I read the pitch, took a peek at the adorable line-up of affordable and gift-worthy products (hello, rad geometric bowls and concrete planters), and thought to myself "He nailed it." Hence, there is now a post about Annie Housewife on TMT, and this gent inspired me to share some super quick #PR101 tips with y'all.

Media Pitching 101

1. Know your outlet. Take the time to actually read the outlet before pitching. Do they do gift guides? Reviews? Round-ups? Decide the angle you want to approach them at, and make sure you are timely and on-topic. Casting a wide net and sending off-base topics to various outlets isn't a good idea either - you are wasting time and making that person's inbox cluttered. Clutter gives me a case of the sads. Don't be clutter.

2. Get personal. Adrian started it off with a compliment that shows that he (well, his wife Ilse actually) reads my blog. 5 points right there. Like most writers, editors and bloggers, I love getting feedback from my readers. Showing that you follow along and are engaged with what they are doing is a simple but effective way to get a person's attention. An email starting off with "Dear Triple Max Tons," or "Dear Editor" probably won't get you to the top of anyone's "blog post ideas" list.

3. Be concise. I tend to be a chatterbox and can get a little "fluffy" in my writing sometimes, but that is when I need my 'editing goggles' on most. Craft your pitch, whittle it down to digestible, concise tidbits that easily relays key info, and read it aloud to make sure there aren't any typos.

4. Use links and embed images. Make it easy to check out your site/product and get in touch- provide hyperlinks to your website, social links (usually in signature), and embed (not attach) 1-2 images for fast viewing in the body of the email.

High fives for cool new e-boutiques and learning sessions, all packaged in one pretty post. Just want to say that I don't intend this list to be used as an exact recipe for PR success every single time - more like a few quick tips to help any newbies craft a proper pitch that will help get you noticed in a minefield of emails. My Fave Green Juice Recipe

I love, like reaaalllllyyyy love, breakfast foods (case in point here, here and here), but not at the usual breakfast time. Brunch all the way, baby. When it comes to breakfast, I'm mostly a slow-sippin' grazer. Put me out to pasture with this green juice, and I am one happy gal. I promise it tastes really good. Plus, it's good for you. My fave part of this concoction are the chia seeds - these little nutritional powerhouses keep you feeling full longer, and can also be made into this delectable dish. And maybe, just maybe, if you drink enough, you might end up with this awesome hairdo. Here's to hoping. ;)

Ingredients

6 leaves of kale
2 green apples
5 stalks of parsley
1 cucumber
1/2 lemon
1 thumb-sized nob of ginger
2 tablespoons of chia seeds
Generous splash of pomegranate juice

Directions

In a juicer (we bought this one), juice the kale, parsley, ginger, apples, and cucumber. Squeeze the lemon juice into the juice container, careful to not add any seeds. Pour the pomegranate juice into the container. Add chia seeds. Stir. Serve and drink immediately.

I'm jetting off to the West Coast today to get wild in celebration of my best pal's upcoming wedding, and I am literally jumping for joy that I get to see my college girlfriends. I miss them all like woah, and reunions are always super fun. Though the whole point is to shower the bride-to-be with jaw-droppingly sassy gifts for the honeymoon, I'm curious what type of 'souvenier' I'll come back with this time. Last time I flew out to visit them all, I came back to Texas with a raging addiction to seaweed snacks (thanks, Kristin). Seriously. Seaweed snacks. How weird are we???

Styled In 5 Minutes: Easy Tucked-In Braided Updo

I am pretty useless when it comes to styling my hair (though I have recently mastered beachy waves....booyakasha), but this simple messy updo is basically fool-proof and, therefore, my new go-to now that it's heating up here in Austin.

To get the look:

1. Loosely part hair into two sections - the looser in the back, the better. Try not to have a really hard part line in the back of your head.
2. Braid the two sections however you like - regular or fishtail would both look great.
3. Bring one braid across the back of your head, and then curve it back around. Tuck in the loose ends, and pin. Repeat on the other side, positioning the second braid over the other one and tucking in the end under the first braid.
4. Pop in a few extra pins to make sure it's secure, and you are good to go!

That's it. It's basically milkmaid braids, but reversed. So easy, even a caveman could do it.

A snapshot from the weekend. Just me and my jewelry (or as I like to say, "mah jooree"). Ain't nothin' coming between us. Most of the goodies I'm wearing I scored at flea markets, thrift shops or "borrowed" from my mom...but luckily, fashion goes in cycles and there are some similar all-star stand-ins begging to be on your fingers, wrists and neck. #1 and #2 in particular are eerily similar to what I'm rockin' in these pics. Oh, and #4 is on mega-clearance...those three pave and gold bangles clock in at $22. Heck yes.

Complexion Perfection

Prior to hearing the gospel according to SPF 45, I absolutely murdered my skin in the sun. My super fair skin is riddled with zillions of little sunspots and freckles, and is pretty splotchy. I basically look like a mole-covered pink-hued ghost 24/7. I kid you not...John snapped one picture of me on our honeymoon where I literally look like a freckled member of the Volturi (the hideous bleach blonde highlights I got for our wedding did jack squat to combat that likeness). I'm surprised the locals weren't all "Leyak is back!!! Aggghhhhhh!!! Run! RUN!"

Anywho, I am running dangerously low on my most favorite tinted moisturizer on the face of the planet, and since the tax fairy wasn't exactly kind to us this year, I'm going to try and find an alternative drugstore option that covers, nourishes and protects. That sounds like a BB cream, doesn't it!? These souped-up tinted moisturizers hydrate, even out skin, protect with anti-aging ingredients, and offer a dose of SPF. It's a hefty promise, but after trying a sample that I ripped out of a magazine, my curiosity is piqued. I think I'm going to give this, this and this a try and see how they measure up. Hopefully better than my beloved Dior. ;) Do any of you use BB creams? Thoughts?

Market Revival

This weekend, John and I hit up Market Revival on Saturday before heading over to our very first crawfish boil at a new friend's house. The three-day event was chock full of local artists, growers, pickers, brewers, fabulous furniture, architectural elements, succulents, a potbelly pig, a chicken with the wildest hairdo ever (worth the trip just to see this) and more - all on the 2.5 acre grounds at ReVival. There was tons of eye candy offered up from Jordan Loves James (how cute is that owl pendant!?), fresh produce market from Tomato Happy Hour, face painting, High Country Bison food trailer, live music with Jenna Paulette, and much much more.

Canned Biscuit Dough Donuts and Holes

Surprisingly light and airy, these homemade donuts made with canned biscuit dough were the dessert du jour for the last leg of our trip in Florida. Now, I have to give credit where credit is due....so let's give a round of applause to my mom-in-law for whipping these churro-flavored donuts up.

Now let's give her a thumbs down for introducing me to these little diet devils. I feel like I just took a bite from the fruit of the Tree Of Knowledge. Why, Lolly....WHY??? If you make these, you'll 100% be asking me the same question. I apologize in advance.

Canned Biscuit Dough Donuts and Holes

Recipe adapted from Paula Deen // Photos by Me
(Yes, I'm slightly devastated that I'm writing a post inspired by Mrs. Let's Eat A Stick Of Butter And Laugh About It)

Ingredients

Peanut or canola oil, for frying

Canned Biscuit Dough

Cinnamon and sugar (to coat)

Directions

Heat 2 inches oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350 degrees F.

Lay out the biscuits on a cutting board and with a 1 1/2-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter, cut out a hole from the middle of each biscuit. Fry the rings and holes in the oil until golden and then flip with tongs to fry the other side. Drain on paper towels and then toss on the cinnamon-sugar or ice and decorate with sprinkles, as desired.

PS: These would pair smashingly with some Casa Brasil coffee...

What are these? These are a trio of dipping sauces that are extremely delicious when paired with those magical little globes of green. I don't have a particular recipe for any of these since I usually eyeball it, and keep adding this or that until it tastes right. Luckily, they are pretty darn near impossible to mess up...so that adds some bonus points in an otherwise vague recipe post. ;)

Dipping Sauce #1: Balsamic Mayo

Whisk together mayo made with olive oil, a little non-fat Greek Yogurt to cut the fat, and balsamic vinegar. Transfer into small bowl.

Dipping Sauce #2: Melted Butter

Get the best quality butter possible. Melt butter in a sauce pan or microwave...which ever you fancy. Pour into small bowl.

Dipping Sauce #3: Vinaigrette

In a covered jar, pour in extra virgin olive oil, balsamic (or red wine or champagne) vinegar, spicy mustard with the seeds in it, salt, pepper - and if you want to get fancy - fresh herbs like tarragon and oregano. Shake well until incorporated, and pour into small bowl.

Well that was easy. Now go make these, eat an artichoke, and tell me which is your favorite (or your go-to dip).

A Mason Pearson boar bristle brush. Even with the promise of silky and shiny locks, can you justify the cost of the Rolls-Royce of hairbrushes?

How about these classic beauties that positively go with everything and that you promise you'll never take off your feet? Oh, and to the dodo's out there buying these expensive monstrosities....I beg you to reconsider and to give me the cash instead because you have clearly either 1) gone crazy, 2) run out of pretty things to buy, or 3) all of the above.

And who can forget about the mac daddy of luxurious face creams....and body oils that supermodels swear by?

It kind of breaks my heart that this Balmain clutch is so desperately out of my league. Plus, this iconic bag nearly gave me a heart attack when I took a gander at the price....really?! And how did I not know that they cost this much?? Wasn't there a Sex And The City episode about this? I think there was.

I had to laugh when I discovered the price on these awesome vintage Persol sunnies....

Is this too much to pay for "the perfect white tee" after a lifetime of searching? What about a simple and slimming LBD?

So....now I'm curious. Tell me, what's the one item you just had to have and splurged on?

PS Splurge. What a gross sounding word. I promise to use that word only in dire straights from this point onward.

Seeing Scallops

Scallops....if you ask me to eat one, I'll turn green and my stomach will get churlish. If you ask me to wear them, I'll gladly jump with glee. I especially am loving scalloped-edge shorts (especially ones that are easy on the wallet like the pair above!). It's a very feminine detail without delving into saccharine sweet territory. Pair them with an unfussy top, comfortable sandals and BOOM - you've got a perfect spring outfit at your fingertips.

Weekend In Review

Certainly not the most glamorous of weekends, but it was chock full of feelings of accomplishment and sweet moments. After a week of SXSW festivities, John and I couldn't muster the desire to head back downtown on Saturday. Instead, we slept in, made banana pancakes and ran a few errands (one of which was replacing my camera's lens cap that I lost). After a quick detour to the paper store that resulted with this cheap DIY art project and thrift shop where I snapped up a colorful watercolor painting that now lives in our hallway, we headed to Lowe's to pick up some plants for our garden. John drew up the most fantastic landscaping plan last week (a perk of being married to a very talented architect), and we got to work raking, weeding, tearing up the grass and pruning the trees. It looks like we barely put a dent in it, but progress is progress - and even though it's a bit messy right now, it already looks SO much better. The rest of the weekend was pretty much "wash, rinse, repeat" on the landscaping front. I think our backs are officially broken, but it'll be worth it once we have a lush backyard to enjoy picnics and cocktails in. Hopefully we'll finish before the temps hit 110 degrees. ;)

Hanging art stresses me out. I hang it crooked 99% of the time, can never find the studs, and am super ADD which results in constant rearranging. Fun fact: the bizarro 1980s texture on our walls isn't a fan of those super convenient little sticky picture hangers...just ask the shattered glass that had a meet-and-greet with our floor. Anyways, for these reasons and beyond, most of the walls in our house are still as bare as Bruce Willis' scalp.
