As a photographer capturing people moments and memories is my job and I truly love every second of it. Every now and then I have the chance to do something that captures the moment but also helps a person to cherish and document a special time in their life. Knowing Angel for many years made me want to give her this gift. I understand what I difficult time this is for her and her family, but I still wanted to capture the beautiful glow of her pregnancy. What was even more special were the items that Angel brought to her shoot to help her include her husband Chad in the session. She brought along his ring, his shirt, his hat, ribbon from their wedding day all of which were incorporated in these images. Even though someone may not be with us during a special time in our lives, they are always looking over us. Angel, your positive nature and your unbelievable strength is inspiring and I will always remember the time we spent together capturing these images. I look forward to capturing your little guy over the years to come. Written below is a blog entry by my wonderful blog writer Katie Bickell and best friend of Angel so I felt it fitting that she share her story.

The Strength of a Mother’s Love
Angel’s Maternity Session

By now I’m sure most reading this are familiar with the tragedy that my dear friend, Angel Janke, is experiencing. At thirty-one weeks pregnant with their first child, Angel lost her beloved husband, Chad, in a camping accident.
For her, and the many that love her, the last few weeks have been surreal, terrible, overwhelming. They have also been weeks of incredible generosity and love. And they have been weeks that epitomize divine strength.
I have been in awe of Angel’s serenity during this unbearable time. Already maternal before her son’s birth, Angel proves that a “mother’s love, a mother’s instinct, is greater than grief.” She’s already a great mommy, and has realized “when you’re a mom, you no longer have the luxury of falling apart.” But driving her to stay healthy even more than her pregnancy is her feeling of deep gratitude. As she expressed at her husband’s memorial,

“I am sad, and I am mourning.
But in the same breath, I feel so incredibly blessed to have had five and half years to spend with my soul mate, my best friend: A man who I loved with all my heart…
Every time I see a picture of him. I see a smile that melts my heart, eyes that make me fall deeper in love, and a man who is looking down on me, sending me his love and strength. I feel so grateful to be carrying his son; through Vinly, a piece of Chad will always be with me. This comforts me, and I do not feel alone.”

Despite her loss, Angel remains joyous of her pregnancy, in love with her unborn son Vinly. And so, when offered a complimentary maternity shot by Trisha Fiddler Poitras of Live Love Laugh Photography, she knew it would be a beautiful way to preserve this sad, but awe-inspiring time of her life.

Having a special moment captured by Trisha
Angel felt at peace after her photo shoot with Trisha. Amidst the warm, beautiful backdrop of Live Love Laugh Photography’s recently acquired studio, Trisha shared her own experiences with Angel, and “even gave me some very good tips about dealing with cranky babies!”
The session, while poignant, was one filled with “smiles, laughter and fun.” In Angel’s own words,
“(Trisha) really understands that a person can feel self-conscious and vulnerable… (but she) has a warm and bubbly personality, and she even cranks up the heat so that your nice and warm even though you’re in your undies! You can tell that this is more than just a job for Trisha; she is so passionate about it… Thank you, Trisha, for the beautiful shots that I will cherish for a lifetime.”

A Wedding Full of Love & Laughter!

Justine and Darryl Garon

”We’re going to the Chapel and we’re going to get Married”!

There are countless jokes about how a single person’s life simply stops once he or she ties the knot to “the old ball and chain.”

But this cliché couldn’t be further from the truth for the new Mr. and Mrs. Garon. In fact, new bride Justine has felt never more exciting.

“Married to Darryl I feel more confident, sexier even! “ Justine confided over the phone. Although, looking at how she rocked her wedding photos, this fact is less than surprising!

For this newlywed, life feels as though it has truly started since the ceremony. Justine and Darryl chose to marry in Justine’s family parish, St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Slave Lake, Alberta. It is custom for all couples who wish to be married by the Church to attend pre-marital counselling led by the priest or church elders.

“Darryl was a little nervous about the counselling, but a good old-fashioned Church wedding was important to me. It was easy to get through it together; there were a lot of laughs.”

Not only did the couple have fun, but they now have the tools to ensure that the laughs continue throughout their marriage, “There were lots of good things to take away from (the counselling). It taught us about being ‘life-giving.’ That means being generous to your spouse and giving them room to enjoy life, like how it’s important for me to encourage Darryl to spend time out with the boys, or for him to give me time to go to yoga, or spend some ‘me’ time alone or with friends.”

While the couple had no problem planning their marriage, Justine claims that she somewhat struggled to plan the actual wedding. “We kept it pretty simple; I was not very good at wedding planning. If I had my way I would have been married on a quad in the bush somewhere, but it’s hard to find a Priest who will to do that,” Justine joked. “I knew I wanted a country theme, something that was ‘us.’” The couple accomplished this with a generous use of raffia, Sunflowers and Gerber daisies.

Another unique way the couple made the wedding their own was through their menu. “At first we kidded about serving chicken fingers and fries at our wedding, but at the last minute we decided to just do it! It ended up being really fun to watch our guest’s reactions at the buffet. We also served pizza, and, of course, a side salad.”

How can you ensure that you look as happy and stunning in your wedding photos? Easy, enjoy yourself! “As difficult as it was to make all the little decisions, I loved every minute. (The wedding) exceeded everything I ever thought it would be. I was so happy; the priest must think I’m a little weird!” Mrs. Garon jokes again. “And I loved working with Trisha (of Live Love Laugh Photography). She’s so easy going, and she makes you feel like you are so important. Be open to anything she suggests; no matter what she does (the photos) will turn out beautifully.”

On Trisha’s part, she also adds some of the factors that resulted in the success of the Garon’s photos, “Justine and Darryl used bright, beautiful colours in the wedding, which naturally draws the eye and makes for beautiful photos. Also, Justine had a makeup artist (aka, Maid-of-Honour, Britney Whitney), who made her up flawlessly. Most of all,” adds Trisha, “the couple and their families were really organized and that gave us lots of time for photos. All-in-all, it was just a really lovely, well done wedding.”

Trisha’s Tips #1: Dressing for the Shoot

If you’re anything like me, your first thought/worry/full blown panic over booking a photo session is, “What will we wear!?!”
Usually, as the adult female model of the shoot, all responsibility to dress partners and children fall on your shoulders. You know this, and so does every other woman who views the photos. Oh, the pressure!
Thankfully, we, the clueless of the world, have Live Love Laugh’s brilliantly stylish and artistically experienced photographer, Trisha Poitras, to share some advice on how to look gorgeous, comfortable and, most importantly, genuine in your professional photos. Enjoy!

Trisha Tips:
Let’s talk about style and originality. Let’s make your pictures different, authentic, classic! Let’s give them something to talk about. Celebrities have been doing this for years, seemingly effortlessly! Gone are the days of matching white t-shirts or a family sporting identical red Christmas sweaters; bring on the stripe and plaid, bring on the distressed jeans and the vintage jewellery – bring on the fun!
Adding Colour
When I take your picture, I want to capture you! I really don’t like to meet up at the session to find clients wearing all white or black unless that is who they really are (and how many of us are so colourless?). I myself like to live cosily in the yellow colour spectrum. Why yellow? I don't know, it is simply a color that I have always been drawn to – a colour that shows up in my self-portraits time and time again. Yellow is just me, and how cool is it to have a signature shade?
I love what Nicole wears in this photo: Bright Kelly Green. Look how she pops against the white backdrop of the snow, how the green brightens the couple, draws attention to her smiling eyes, and compliments her skin and hair tone. So much more fun that if she had matched her fiancé in a dark coat!

Colour Combining.
So I’ve convinced you that colour is “in,” right? Now let’s talk about combining your family’s favourite shades!
The most flattering way to colour combine is to pick a single tone and bind it throughout the shoot. Consider the above photograph. The scene is rich with colour, but the family member’s wardrobes complement each other: no clashing or identical outfits here! The key is not to dress mom, dad, brother and sister in the same shade, but to dress one in a more vivid shade and leave the other colors monochromatic. In this photo, Mom’s purple blouse adds an element of hue without drawing eyes solely on her as the floral tones in her daughter’s patterned dress counters the purple. The floral pattern works without overwhelming the photo because the other models are in blocked colours. Even Dad and Son, who are dressed similarly, are making great use of colour combining (notice that the little boy is wear a lighter coloured wash of jeans – perfect to suggest his young age, while Dad is more sophisticated in dark wash).

Work the Shoes
Fun fact: I almost named my business “I Shoot for Shoes!" I love, love, love shoes, and I know I’m not alone! When I meet someone that’s really got it together in the shoe department, I get excited! It doesn’t matter if you can walk in them or not, bring me color, style and shape - we’ll work them into the shoot. A great pair of shoes can really set a tone, think: the sex appeal of red stilettos, the down-home feel of dusty cowboy boots, the sweetness of a little girl’s patent Mary Jane’s, prettily polished toenails in summery espadrilles… And I haven’t even mentioned the amazing, gravity-defying benefits heels provide for bums and thighs!

Accessorize
Bring on the pearls, the broaches, the cocktail rings, the hats, the belt buckles, the scarves, the cuffs, the statement earrings! Accessorizing is a great way to “own” the photo, have fun and show off your unique style. Personally, I love the clunky, vintage look that this model captures with her long pearl and gold necklace, but if this isn’t your style, show me what is! Play with what you have and have fun; if your ensemble doesn’t work, I’ll let you know.

Hair and make up
Keep it simple or wear it funky; either way, be sure it’s applied well! I can’t say this enough: Hire a makeup artist! I work with Makeup and Meg (http://www.makeupandmeg.com/) and her talents make such a difference. She’s affordable and fun, but if an artist isn’t in your budget, consider the free makeup consultation that most drugstores offer for help with products and color matching. As fair as hair styling, wear it however you like, so long as your face is visible.
One more essential makeup tip – always carry lip balm! My lenses get really close, and stunning photos can be ruined if a gorgeous, fresh-faced model has dry, cracked, flaky lips. A quick swipe of gloss on shoot is a super quick and easy way to fix this unattractive problem!

A Final Note
Remember to be yourself. If you don’t wear a lot of accessories, don’t scramble to find a statement piece you wouldn’t be caught dead in day-to-day. If you don’t wear makeup, now is not the time to try a neon blue shadow or magenta lipstick. If you’re still totally lost in the wardrobe department, don’t fret. Wear the prettiest, most unique thing you own: your smile!

Her clients will tell you again and again, “trust your photographer!” But first, why not get to know her?
Meet Trisha Fiddler-Poitras, owner and photographer of Live Love Laugh Photography. Trisha is known not only for her gorgeous, clear photography, but also for her outgoing, easy-going nature that puts clients at ease. After our three-hour “interview,” (that was more of a girlish chat about our babies, husbands and social lives) I can certainly testify to her friendly, comforting disposition!
Katie Bickell, Young Mum Freelance: Tell me, Trisha, what made you decide to pursue a career in photography?
Trisha Poitras, Live Love Laugh Photography: “I’ve always been, or wanted to be, an artist. I loved art classes in high school and always earned highest achievement awards in the subject. However, I’ve also always been realistic, and so I became a nurse in order to support myself financially.”

“After starting a family with my husband, Curtis, I was introduced to the world of photography when I had a photographer take professional shots of our children. It was exciting watching the photographer work; I really wanted to try taking the photos of my children myself.”
“So I bought a Canon Mark II 5D, and took several courses such as Canon’s Learn Your Camera, General Digital Photography (through Northern Lakes College), Photoshop Editing, and courses on lighting, posing, infant and child posing, family posing, and wedding posing. I fell in love with the whole process.”
“Some of the most beneficial courses I’ve taken have been done through workshops with those who I consider mentors in the industry. I’ve been teaching myself as I go and gaining a lot of experience. I’ve now reached a place in my career where I feel confident in my expertise in photography and editing, but it’s so important to keep learning.”
K.B: What inspires you most during your photo shoots?

Trisha: “At first I was all about the subject and the props, I liked to have “themed” shoots with lots of detail. Now I realize that less is more. Light and a subject’s connection to the camera really inspire me. I love the morning light, the evening light, eyes peering deep into the camera, a darting look - I love that. Great style inspires me, and people who want, who enjoy having their photo taken. Vintage details inspire me, and of course, shoes!”
K.B: Do you have a signature style?
Trisha: “My style is very vintage, very country right now. That’s quite popular. But style is always evolving; pearls and ribbon are “in” now, but when leather’s back I might find myself shooting against concrete walls and brick more often rather than in meadows, fields and rivers.”
K.B: What do you consider your biggest challenges in the photography field?
Trisha: “Honestly, clients who come in with too clear an idea of what they want. Most people need at least a little direction and they should open to that. When a client comes in, trusts me and has fun, the whole shoot is more organic and natural – that’s when the photos really turn out beautifully. Another challenge is how fast the industry moves; I challenge myself to keep up to date with the newest technology, the styles, the research, and to always be learning the newest in editing. And, of course, balancing business and family can be difficult.”
K.B: That does sound like a challenge! What aspects of photography are the most rewarding or fulfilling to you?
Trisha: “It’s a silly thing, but it’s so flattering to see that over 70% of my clients profile pictures were taken by me! I feel the same when I go into a client’s home and see my photos on their walls, or see them sent out as Christmas cards. It can be a lot of pressure, but being hired to capture those once in a lifetime engagement, newborn, or wedding shoots, knowing that someone trusts you to capture those special days is so humbling, and such an honour. Or seeing a groom right before the ceremony, when he’s nervous and excited; looking into a bride’s eyes on her wedding day, witnessing all that love, that beauty. It’s like a backstage pass to their relationship for the day! And how many people other than a mother have the privilege of getting so close to a little, naked, unique new baby, posed in an adorable position? I see looks that usually only the mother would. And I love my clients, I love making people are so happy and positive. I love that I get to do what I love!”

K.B: What should your clients know about you?
Trisha: “I’m very easy to work with and friendly. I try to find fun ways for people to have fun on their shoots. I hope the shoots are memorable for my clients. I don’t “pose” my clients, but I do pay attention to detail and help them position themselves. Most couples want direction and are uncomfortable with posing themselves. An hour and a half before sunset is my favourite light. I’m prompt and I’m on time, so I expect others to be on time as well. Also, be open to relocating! I love finding really beautiful, unique places to shoot - find me an old farmyard and I’m a happy girl!”
K.B: Can you tell us some things we might not guess about you?
Trisha: “Hmm…I sneak into the kitchen for midnight snacks. I faint a lot. I like to believe that I have a naturally blonde hair (its actually mousy brown). I have two kids who don’t like to be photographed (if you see photos of my daughter, a new bike was probably involved) and my husband doesn’t like to have his photo taken either. I do though, and Curtis says whenever I see a camera I instantly “model cross” my legs. He says whenever my girlfriends and I see a camera it’s like “ding!” all the legs cross to make us look slimmer! (Laughing). Also I adore my husband. He thinks he’s really tough but Curtis is actually very sentimental. I find it really funny how something sad that might bring tears to normal person’s eyes doesn’t make him flinch, but his eyes will tear up at an Oiler’s game when the crowd sings “Oh Canada.” He gets misty at weddings, at big wins; during the Olympics you might find he’ll disappear to a corner and wipe a few tears. (More laughter). That’s about it I guess. Really, I’m just a girl who loves to take pictures!”

There is still a lot of summer with these outfits so don't fear it is very summery buy with the little sweaters it will keep bare shoulders warm into the evening! Ashley & Doug ~ A love worth a story.....

It is fitting that Ashley and Doug’s Live Love Laugh Photography shoot took place in a country field after a day’s rainfall; like them, the landscape portrayed is fresh and sunny. Not to mention that this couple has no problem with a bit of rain!
Their story begins in early childhood. A seven-year-old Ashley remembers coming home from school to find “Dougie” and his older sister, Katie, on the front steps of her house. Katie and Ashley became close friends, and Doug, a few years younger than the girls, would tag along after them.
Ashley always valued her friendship with Doug, but had no idea of what was to come. Still, she knew that he would always have a special place in her heart: “I asked Dougie to be my escort when I graduated from High School. I had a boyfriend at the time, but I didn’t want someone who wasn’t “forever” to be in my grad pictures. Doug was my best friend; I knew I’d never regret
taking him.”

After graduation, Ashley moved away to complete her education, and a year passed before the pair were reunited.
Upon returning home to visit Katie, Ashley noticed Doug in a new light. He had changed from her childhood playmate into a calm, self-assured young man. She appreciated the way that he could “soothe her hot temper” after a bad day, and how well he knew her. Ashley fell in love.
On his part, Doug claims that he had always been infatuated by her bubbly, friendly personality. When asked about Ashley’s best qualities, Doug replied, “She’s always happy and very easy to get along with.” Another of Doug’s favourite things about Ashley is “her shortness.” To which the petite girl laughed, “He won’t even let me wear heels to weddings!”

Their relationship was fully-realized when Doug walked Ashley to her car after a day spent at his family’s home. It was raining, and Ashley hurried to get into her vehicle, when, to her surprise, Doug pulled her to him. Since that first kiss, four years earlier, the couple hasn’t looked back.
Ashley and Doug recently built a home which they share with their dog Baxter. Although the couple knew each other well before cohabitation, there have been a few surprises.
“Doug was brought up in a home where he had to do chores and tidy up – but now he’s EXTREMELY messy!” Whereas Doug still can’t fathom the “amount of makeup (Ashley) has!”

The couple maintain that they’re friendship is still just as strong since becoming lovers, “The three of us (Katie, Ashley and Doug) still hang out all the time,” Ashley insists, ”But now we don’t pick on Dougie.” “As much!” laughed Doug.
Their advice for other couples posing for love shoots is to trust your photographer. Ashley fretted all day and almost cancelled their session because of rain, but, she said, “Trisha just kept telling me not to worry, that the rain will stop and it will be great. I’m so glad I hadn’t cancelled!”
There were also a few moments in the session where the couple felt awkward, despite Trisha’s “wonderful personality.” “But, “Ashley added, “She really made us comfortable. There were certain shots that I thought would look weird, but they turned out nicer than I ever could have imagined! Those pictures are actually Doug’s favourites!” Even Doug promised, “It wasn’t bad at all. I even posed for some (shots) by myself.”

Our interview was coming to a close, but I couldn’t resist asking one last question:
“Tell me, Doug, what does the future hold for you and Ashley as a couple?”

Without hesitation, Doug nodded and replied, “Marriage and a family.” Ashley blushed and added, “We talk about it all the time. Dougie wants one child, and I want three. Hopefully, we’ll have triplets!”
Whatever the future holds, I’m sure it will be as bright and as lovely as the couple in their stunning photos.

Spring is here and so is the time for those gorgeous Casual Grad Photos. Wearing something that reflects your style is very important. If your were a volleyball star and still love to dance with your divas make sure to pose with a volleyball and some super cute heals to reflect both your styles. Its all about being you! No one really loves those stuffy grad portraits that have to you in a gown and cap.....those are for year books and your Grad casuals are for YOU! Imaging finally having some cool pictures that both you and your parents love!

I thought that I would give all you Fashionista's a little something to help you and the family dressed for your spring shoot with me! As I have said in the past I like to see color and risk ...and some funky dressing:) And do you know the great thing.... you can have these delivered right to your door! Shop online and avoid the mud puddles! But be aware you spring shoots I may make you jump in the puddles!

Ever read the book Mud Puddle by Robert Munch? its my spring read... I love that book it is a fav of me and my daughters!

I will be honest I have so many couples/ weddings coming, I may only be taking 1 or 2 families a month.....:)

Ansen's 1st Birthday!

So I have had the treat to photograph this little one from her day 1! It is so exciting to see them grow! From her Newborn, to her Christmas, and now her Smash the cake session...she has always been a pleasure. We had a lot of fun today making a mess with the cake.....:) She had never really had free go at a cake before and she was not really liking it....but SLOWLY she got into it! And now I am afraid to say she may reallY like sugar....Sorry Mom! It was well worth the mess don't you think!

So Many Great photos from this session! Thank you mom for coming back! We always love seeing you in the studio! Ansen is the perfect model and I look forward to a lifetime of shoots with her!

So I met this little guy one afternoon for a little hockey game:) he is actually almost the same age as my Son...2...... The _________two's:) So I knew that it may be a hard age to photograph since I know that my own can be a challenge. But he was pretty good! We were able to get some cute shots and he was able to play a little hockey! What a little Cutie!

So Trisha, What do you get asked a photographer the most? Funny thing is, its a really silly question......WHAT DO I WEAR!!!

I get asked it all the time, by literally every client. When I was starting out I use to say wear black or white the most timeless and forgiving of fashions. But now that I have many, many shoots under my camera strap, I give a much different answer.

I want YOU to be you! If you have a style I want to see it! Scarfs, hats, boots, jackets, accessories.....COLOR!!!! Think Retro, Vintage, Fashion Forward, Modern, Spice up your photos. I would NEVER say to match anymore.... More like pick colors that compliment the season, your skin and hair tones or that match the current decor trends.....

Its really easy to get inspired by color. Walk through the "Brick" and see what color they are decorating with or even buy a magazine. Go beyond the normal clothing choices for your spring pictures. I am encouraging people to go the old rubberboot look this year, I have found them in every color under the rainbow! and not just for kids...for mommy too!

I love these colors for any skin tone. I can really invasion a little family in this set! But not to say that pieces would not be good for the kids or a new engagement!

I don't really do alot of Nature Photography, but the other day a few scenes caught my eye......A little bit of life popping through the snow:) It Really does show you how persistent life is...even though life is tuff, new growth always finds a way. A fresh start, that is always what I think about in the spring. To be more gracious, kind and willing to listen are what I want to Bring to my spring. What are you going to to in yours...to better this wonderful time of year?

Winter Beauty

Angela and I have been doing sessions together for a while, I have done some of her very adorable daughter and her family photos. We have been waiting a while to do her own personal shots. So finally the time had come. Angela had gotten married a few years ago in the summer with her hair up....so she wanted to try a winter session with her hair down.....:) We also did a couple casual sittings as well. But I think the best thing about doing sessions like these are

1. You get to "rock your dress" again.

2. You kids will have more pictures of their fab mom!

I know from looking back at my own pictures of my mother I have very few from her 20's. Its very sad! So if you are in that situation yourself consider having them done and done by a professional photographer, cause they will help you look your best! Have your makeup done, get your hair done! Treat your self! MOMS OUT THERE YOU DESERVE IT!

Purple Haze

So as part of a assignment that I was requested to do, I was to photograph what color I feel. I feel alot of colors in life. I feel like I love how I look and feel when I where blue.... its really my color. But I dont want to focus on me after doing a assignment on self portraits last time:) So I started to think of others colors...the green grass I long for? The yellow of my hair? Hmmmmm I love alot of colors ...too many to choose really. So I started to think if I know anyone else that I know that a color means alot to...... Well if anyone knows my daughter you will know that the color PURPLE means alot to her! So Why not honor this seven year obsession with a photoshoot. Good thing because just yesterday she announced that her fav color is now.......Blue! Lol!

Twins!....what more can I say!

So this wonderful couple Wes and Tasha are the proud parents of a Baby Boy Ethan and Baby Girl Brookelynn. They had a long wait for these two little angels but well worth it in the end.

The shoot began with a very warm house...good going mom! Both babies were pretty into it! They were easy to pose and were not fussy at all.....just super small! We would get one all sleeping and relaxed and then Baby B would give a good kick to the other baby in the face lol....with separate feeding and different schedules...I would have to say it was still very successful.

There were allot of reasons I enjoyed this shoot and one was the fact that the parents were so relaxed! Brand new parents of twins! and relaxed! Wow! The parents were game for everything which was allot of fun. It was almost painful how cute the kids were! Omg I just fell in love!

I hope everyone enjoys these pictures as I did taking them!

I will say they were so different already and only a week old! They were so small as well by far the smallest babies I have got to meet.

Such a hard time of year for everyone I think, Its a long lonely road of March.....Marching slowly and according to the weather man a cold one....why ...why!!! I want to be outside! At this point I actually want to see a Bug! So I thought this may cheer everyone up!

My New March Resolution!

So I love to blog! lol well I want to love to blog! There have always been a few things that hold me back and time is one.... so I have a smidge of time before my son wakes up so I am going to get it done! Right now I am taking part in a workshop for photographers called FLY with Angie Warren.
Its a great little self help and rediscovery tool that am enjoying very much. I was told to take some time and reflect and do a self portrait. It was very hard as I wanted it to be bright and reflect my style. So here it is! I used no flash, a remote timer which I set off with my toes:) and a reflector. Some of the images make me sad and some happy, I really wanted to capture how I feel about photography...happy at times and challenged and wanted to do better at times. I have really enjoyed the ladies in the class and I hope that I will get to shoot with some of them soon!

It was great to take these two sisters pictures, I have known them for a very long time:) I taught Chelsey Synchro for years! They had alot of fun rolling in the snow! Not! I froze them! Sorry Ladies!:)
