Wish me luck Trixie fans! I run my very 1st 5K this weekend in Fort Worth! I am really excited, since I have been training for 6 months. I am not very fast, but I know I can finish and I am looking forward to crossing that finish line on Saturday morning! I'll be sure and let you know how I do. Any other runners out there gearing up for races soon?

There has been lots of great information on the blog this week, too, so let's review!

Tips Trends and Techniques - How To Sphereize for SBC+ USers

Happy Tuesday! Jennifer here with another edition of Tips, Trends and Techniques Tuesday! Last Tuesday, Trixie Scraps Star Jamie B introduced you to the fun technique of selecting a group of photos and sphereizing them, or making them into a cool looking globe! Today, I'm going to show our SBC+ (Storybook Creator Plus) software users how to do the same thing and provide you with a template to get started.

I'm going to show you how do make a globe using a 7x7 photo grid. You can play with this on your own using a 5x5, 6x6, etc sized grid. It all depends on how many pictures you want to use and how big you want the final images to be. As you'll see on my finished page, there about 21 pictures out of the 49 picture boxes that are really visible, so don't worry that you need to have 49 great images for this project.

First, we're going to start with our grid of 49 square photo openings. By using the squares, we'll end up with a nice, round globe shape when we're done. I prefer just a tiny bit of space around each photo as well. Again, use your own preference. You can eliminate the spacing if you like or add a small matte around all your photos as well. Have fun and remember there's always the Undo button!

Fill the center 9 squares with your favorite photos, and then work your way out. For the outside squares, I used the same picture all the way around. In the final image, you'll never know it.

Once you have all your photo openings filled, make sure to save your work. Now, select all your photos, go to the Arrange tab and in the Grouping section select Group. Now select the grouped image and select Flatten. Right click on the grouped image and select Apply a Filter. At the top of the screen, check the box that says 'Clip Outside' and scroll down to the second row from the bottom and select Sphereize. Voila! You now have a globe!

How easy was that?! Now, your globe can be treated like any other element on your page - add shadows, matte it, rotate it, etc. To add a reflection underneath your globe is easy peasy, too. First, make sure your globe is located on your page about where you think you want it to be when your page is done. Right click on it and select copy. Right click again on your page and select paste. Click on globe #2 and go to the Arrange tab and under Rotate select the up and down arrow to flip the globe upside down. Move globe #2 so that the top of the image is just touching the bottom of globe #1. Now go to the Alignment area and select the 'center' option so your globes are properly aligned. Save your work again. I added some rotation to mine. The bottom globe will needed to be rotated the same amount in the opposite direction to get the same effect.

Now select globe #2, click on the Cut & Fill tab and select the Straight cutter and then Blended Edge. Decide how much of a reflection you want, and cut off the rest of the globe. Consider if you want to cut it on a straight, horizontal line or if you want to cut on an angle.

Make sure the remnants of globe #2 are selected, go to the Format tab and in the General section, click on opacity. I think you'll find the best results around 50 percent. Slide the bar back and forth, and when you like the result, select Apply.

Now you can go ahead and finish your page! Here's my finished page using the Charlies Arcade kit by North Meets South Studios (Trixie Scraps and Connie Prince):

Sunday Show Offs! Inspiration from YOU!

Hi Trixie Scraps Fans!

I'm so glad you're here! As you can tell, we've changed up our posts on the blog a bit starting February 1st, 2012. That is including the Show Off's portion as well!

Now, Show Offs will be held every other week, instead of every week. You will still get a prize for uploading your layout to Trixie Scraps Gallery. We hope this will allow more participants to get their layouts into the gallery!

So, lets lay out the rules, so no one gets confused!

1. Create a layout using Trixie Scraps products! If you're stuck, check in the Trixie Scraps Gallery for inspiration, or check the blog for Thursday Challenge posts, Fun Font Friday, or even Tuesday Tutorials! On Saturdays we will have lots of inspiration for you from the Stars too! Those are all great ways to get your creative juices flowing!

2. Upload your layout to the Trixie Scraps Gallery by Saturday night (every other week)! Make sure you list which Trixie Scraps products you used!

3. I will Show Off your layouts every other Sunday.

Challenge Thursday - Rule of Thirds

Hi everyone! Melinda here bringing you Challenge Thursday! Today, we are focusing on photography ... one of my favorite topics next to digital scrapbooking! Often when we take a photograph, we are documenting something, and we don't think much about where our subject is located in the frame -- where they are in the view finder or on the LCD screen. But, your every-day pictures will have added "wow" factor when you follow one rule of photography called the "Rule of 3rds," and those "wow" pictures will look fabulous in your scrapbooking layouts!

I've never taken a photography class, but from what I understand they usually focus on this in one of the early lessons. The basic gist of it is that your photo can be more aesthetically pleasing if you align your subject along some invisible grid-lines which break your horizontal and vertical planes into thirds.

Here is an example of the grid I'm talking about that I quick whipped up in my scrapbooking program:

Your goal is to get your subject into one of the "sweet" spots where the hearts are as shown in my grid below. (See the "sweet" hearts? Get it? Groan, you know you want to. )

It can be that the face of your subject is in one of the "sweet" spots, or maybe your subject takes the vertical or horizontal line where the hearts are. "They" say that your photo will be more pleasing to the eye if you follow this compositional "rule."

Here are a couple of recent examples of pictures I've taken, showing how I've followed the rule of thirds. I've put them under my grid so that you can see how I've followed the lines.

Here, my subject is taking up the 2nd vertical line in the photo. I am cropped way in close because I wanted to be, but the same thing would apply if he was further away, as long as he was placed along that vertical line.

Here is an example of having the subject at one of the "sweet" spots where the lines intersect:

You can follow this rule in-camera ... meaning as you are framing up your shot and taking the picture, or you can adjust it in "post-processing" by cropping the picture in your editing program of choice. Some cameras even have an option in their menu to show the grid in your viewfinder or on your LCD screen to help assist you with lining up the shot. Or, if your subject ended up dead center in the picture, you can crop it afterward in your editing program of choice. You can either show a grid or rulers to help you judge where the grid would be, or if your program has an option to show this specific type of grid (like Lightroom does), you can use that too.

Here is a before and after of having my daughter pretty much right in the middle of the frame, and after cropping using the Rule of 3rds:

And the final edit removing the grid lines.

Now that you've seen a few examples, take out that camera and try it out! The "Rule of 3rds" might just give that picture you planned on taking anyway that extra "wow" factor!

Can you feel the LOVE?!? How was your Valentine's Day? It's not something that we make a big deal of at our house, so I was super surprised to get flowers yesterday. I think I'll keep him!

Anyway, there has been a LOT going on here at the Trixie Scraps blog this week, including a Valentine's Day surprise, so let's get to it!

Tuesday, Jamie B. showed us how to spherize a set of pictures in Photoshop Elements. This technique is perfect for those Disney trip pages, and she even included a template to start with and save you some time!

Tips Trends and Techniques - How to Spherize

Jamie B. here with another edition of Tips, Trends and Techniques Tuesday! I recently learned a super cool new technique that I am so excited to share with you today! It's called Spherize and it's easier than you think.

You'll want to begin by starting with a blank 7" x 7" canvas (2100 x 2100 pixels). Make sure it's also 300 dpi.

Arrange you photos however you like in some sort of grid pattern, focusing your favorites in the center. Once you have your photos arranged to your liking, in the layers display, right click on on any layer, and click flatten image.

Next, on the left hand side, select the circle shape

Go back to your flattened image and click and drag your mouse to create a circle from edge to edge. Once you've done this, Ctrl+Shift+I (press these all at the same time and this will select inverse). You should see the marching ants around your circle AND around your your 7 x 7 image. Click delete. Your image should now look like this:

Now, the fun part! Up at the top of your drop down menus, select FILTER, then DISTORT, then SPHERIZE. Your image should now look like this:

You can stop right there if you like; however, it's cool to have a bit of a reflection of your globe too. To do that, Select your image, then duplicate it (Ctrl+J). Select one of the identical images, and IMAGE, ROTATE, FLIP VERTICAL. Then tweak to your liking (I lowered the layer opacity and used the eraser tool to blend).

Make It Hybrid Monday- Paper Fortune Cookies

With just one more day left until Valentine's Day, here's a quick project that you can use for Valentine's Day or any holiday to create personalized fortunes in paper fortune cookies. I used papers from Trixie Scraps' February GGI Always In My Heart. Be sure to grab the pieces today!

Here are the supplies that you will need:
- Circle Cutter/ template
- Glue dots
- Double sided patterned papers
- Personalized fortunes

Step 1- Cut 4 inch circles from the double sided patterned papers

Step 2- Fold the circle in half but do not crease. Add glue dot to adhere together one inch from the side

Step 3- Push in the center and sides until the corners nearly meet

Step 4- Tuck in personalized fortunes at the end of the cookie

Saturday with the Stars: February Gotta Grab It!

Happy Saturday, Trixie Scraps fans! It's Carrin...I'm here today to show off some of the awesomeness that has been coming out of the Scrap CT Stars with Trixie's GGI goodies for this month, Always in My Heart. Check out all the pieces you can get for just $1 each!

Gorgeous, right?!?! You can also pick up a couple of add-on paper packs and blogwear on sale, too!

And now for those layouts I've been promising you...this is just a small sampling. Make sure you hop on over to the Trixie Scrap's gallery to see them all!

I love how Lori B. used the patterned papers and glittery goodness to clip down over those great big letters. I'm a sucker for those photos, too!

Lori W. framed up her photo nicely with some of Trixie's yummy embossed papers and threw in some gorgeous clusters to boot.

I love different poses in Stacy's photos and how well the colors of her daughter's clothes pop against the colors of the kit.

Erica did a great job cutting out tons of heart shapes to create a horizontal line across the middle of her page. Love the heart outlines, too!

And here's what I whipped up with the kit. The colors were perfect for these V-day shots I took of my twinkles. I fell in love with all those patterns!

Challenge Thursday: One Word Challenge

Hi all, Shauna here and it is time for another Challenge Thursday. I love challenges because they help to inspire and encourage me to do more pages. Today I’m going to give you a word challenge. When trying to pick a word, I remembered that day of love is just around the corner, so the easy way out would be for me to pick the word love, but I don’t like the easy way. I tend to be called “trouble”, so I thought that would make a great word for the challenge. So the gauntlet is down, create a page based on the word “trouble”. You can use it in the title or in the journaling.

It seems like winter is trying to make one last effort to have an appearance here in Texas before spring sets in for good. We're usually through the worst of winter by March, so I am looking forward to that!

It's been another busy week here on the Trixie Scraps blog so let's get to the wrap-up!

Last Thursday, Jamie brought us a new template challenge complete with an awesome freebie template! If you grab the template be sure to fill it up with Trixie Scraps goodies and post it in the gallery - you can be a Show-off and get a great treat from Trixie for participating!

On Friday Mary Kate enabled the typography nuts among us by pointing us to St. Nicholas in Fun Font Friday.

Saturday, Stacey introduced us to a new feature on the blog - Saturday with the Stars. This is where we'll feature layouts from the Trixie Scraps Stars using new releases, or just plain fun layouts!

On Tuesday Beth showed us how to use the Modify tool to create your own custom journaling boxes. Be sure to try it out and show us how you use this handy tip!

I happen to know that Tracy has been very busy lately, and since she's been in the studio I haven't been able to get into the studio for a sneak yet. I know she's working on something spectacular though so stay tuned!

Tips, Trends and Techniques Tuesday

Welcome to another edition of the Trixie Scraps Tips, Trends and Techniques Tuesday. It is my pleasure today to host and refresh our memories on the Modify Tool. I am using PSE 7 in this tutorial.

Today I am going to use the Modify tool to make an easy journaling mat, but you can use these techniques to do a lot of other things once you grasp it (which, is not too difficult Wink ) I am going to focus on the "Contract" selection but you can also use the "Expand" option for the reverse effect.

First, make yourself a nice paper shape:

Now, hover over the thumbnail of the layer and press "ctrl" and right click at the same time. This will select the entire shape (marching ants should be going around the whole perimeter of your paper).

Now, find the "Select" option along the top tool bar and then hover over the "Modify" option in that drop down menu. Another drop down menu will open with an option for "Contract" Click on this option.

A box should open that asks how many pixels you want to contract by. The largest contraction you can do is by 100 pixels. I chose 100.

Your marching ants should have moved inside your paper shape- or have been shrunk down a bit. Now, create a new layer (with the ants still marching..)

And select the paintbucket tool (the color does not matter). click on your new layer, inside the marching ants. Viola! A smaller size of your paper shape appears. Now you can clip a coordinating paper to it.

Do this by dragging the paper you chose on top of your new layer. Now hover between the new, smaller sized paper shape and the paper you want to clip to it while holding down the "alt" key. This should make a symbol appear that looks like two intersecting circles. Right Click on your mouse and it should "clip" your paper to the layer below it.

Merge these two layers and you have a perfect, uniform mat for your journaling! If you want to triple your mat, simply repeat the above process.

I love how this tool can help me uniformly shrink or enlarge an area for matting or creating new looks with existing elements. I hope you have fun with it too!

Welcome to our very first Saturday with the Stars! Stacey here, and I am going to be showing off some incredible inspiration from Trixie's Scrap Stars! I feel so very blessed to be a part of Trixie's team, not only for the opportunity to work with her gorgeous creations, but also the talented layout artists that inspire me everyday!

I love browsing through the Trixie Scraps gallery and I wanted to show off some of the pages that stood out for me!

I just love what Cami did here! Her layering and shadow work is amazing! I love how well she captured the excitement he felt, makes me feel like I am sitting right there with her family on Christmas morning!

This one by Erica is just full of fun! I love the bright papers and different patterns and all of the themed elements! Such a great memory to have!

The page was made using this bundle from North Meets South Studios

last but certainly not least, this page from Jamie B. What a special treat for her birthday! I love how she added the big blended photo but also framed a couple of the smaller photos! The simple clusters, great journaling, and the scalloped border really give the page a paper scrapped feel.

Jamie used the Master Chef kit and foam alphas and a Through the Week template!

TTTTuesday - Spell Check

I have a quick tip for you today. I’m a horrible speller- it’s true. So when I’m journaling on a LO or making up previews or word art – I found a great tool right in Photoshop to help me.

With your text tool activated, right click on your text layer and select Check Spelling. This will only work on text layers (not on rasterized type layers).

It will bring up the Check Spelling box. Click Check all layers at the bottom and let it check for errors
Now you don’t have to copy and paste between Word and PS to check your spelling!

Make it Hybrid Monday - Heart Favor Baskets

Happy Monday everyone and welcome to another edition of Make it Hybrid Monday. My name is Laina and I have recently joined the Trixie Scraps hybrid team! I will be working with Sharon and I am so excited to be here, and today I’m here to show you how to make these adorable heart baskets. They are a perfect addition to your Valentine’s décor, or they can be used as treat baskets for the kids or even for your Valentine!

I decided to use Owl Always Love You. I think it’s just the perfect kit for Valentine’s Day!

To complete this project, you will need:
1- 8x8 inch square of Patterned cardstock
2 – 6x6 inch square of Solid cardstock
A bone folder (or scoring tool on your paper cutter)
Scissors (or paper cutter)
Tape
Valentine’s Sweethearts candies

First, In PSE I created the square shapes on a 8.5x11 transparent document, clipped the papers to them and then printed and cut them out.

Then using your bone folder or scoring tool, you will need to score 4 lines on the white side: diagonal line x 2, a horizontal line and a vertical line.

Next, you are going to fold the square horizontally, while pinching at the top. Then tuck the left and right side and you’ll end up with a large triangle with the two smaller ones tucked inside that meet in the middle.

Fold the large triangle in half down the middle. Next, lightly draw a half heart with a pencil, follow the line and cut it out.

Once you cut it out, you can then open it again to see the full heart!

You will need to tape the inside pieces where they meet so it can hold its shape and be able to hold your Valentine’s candies. You can do this by opening it completely and placing half of the piece of tape on the left side of the heart. Then when you fold it back into its heart shape, you can press the tape firmly down on the right side.

Repeat this step for the opposite side so that the two compartments are secure. Finally, add your candies, and enjoy!
