Klondike Derby

On 2/1/19 to 2/2/19 our troop and others participated in the yearly Klondike Derby. Scouts there got the opportunity to learn teamwork and essential scout skills. While there scouts learned to camp in the snow and showed proper clothing for the climate. At the end we had a sled race with all the other troops which put our teamwork merits to the test. It was a fantastic outing!

On January 5th 2019 a total of 7 scouts and 6 adults went to Anthony's eagle scout project. The project was a major success with over 500 bags filled with hygiene kits, socks, and sandals. Along with over 500 handwritten letters to homeless veterans. After, we enjoyed a hot pizza and some drinks.

Troop 626 Open House

Today our troop held an open house to open the opportunity for cub scouts or others to join our troop. Each patrol did an activity relating to scouting with those who wanted to join our troop, while the adults held a power point session for the parents. All in all it was a blast!

Christmas Tree Lot setup

Today we set up our Christmas tree lot and kicked off our Troop 626 Christmas tree sales officially!

We have funded the troop through Christmas tree sales and the Newport Swim and Tennis club were generous enough to allow us to sell our trees there. And to show our gratitude to the Newport Swim and Tennis club we rake and dispose of any trash or leaves around the area. The whole troop worked tirelessly throughout the clean up.

Tolt Macdonald campout

From October 26 to October 28^th a total of 19 scouts and 5 adults from troop 626 camped at Tolt Macdonald for two nights. While there Mr. Marring organized a wonderful orienteering course for the scouts giving them the opportunity to learn how to use a compass and map. On the second night heavy rain poured outside but luckily the troop came prepared and set up their rain covers the day before.

All in all everybody enjoyed the camp and was a great opportunity for scout skills to the younger scouts.

VFW Service Project

Today, Troop 626 did a yard clean-up service project supervised by Grandpa Dan at the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), up near Microsoft. The scouts raked leaves, swept, and generally cleaned up the grounds so it would look nice for the Veterans Day dinner.

At the end of the day the VFW was kind enough to serve homemade pizza for the troop’s work.

50 Mile Hike in Olympics

From August 12th to August 18th, 6 scouts and adult leaders hiked 53.3 miles from Obstruction Point to Graves Creek. Although it was hazy due to the Maple Fire, we had nice weather and only one calamity, Peter's broken trekking pole.

Over memorial day weekend the troop went on a 6.7 mile hike out to an old car-camping campground on the Dosewallips river in the Olympic national forest.

Alex Bowman had his Eagle scout project recently to improve a walking trail near his home in Newcastle, we removed plants, rocks, made a new trail to a lookout and widened the existing trail.

On February 23rd, Troop 626 held a Court of Honor. Among the festivities, Joey Lakey lit the candle in front of the Eagle Scout Insignia to honor him and Cameron Wheatley becoming Eagle Scouts on February 4th

on February 14th to promote my Children and Teen Book Drive.

Christmas Tree Sales

Another successful Christmas Tree Sales Event this year. For the 33rd year in a row at the Newport Hill Tennis and Swim Club Troop 626 Scouts sold trees. Due to the popularity of the trees, we even sold out a week earlier than expected!

Snow Bowl Hut Overnight

For several years, our troop has been hiking to either Snow Bowl Hut or High Hut. After a 4.3 hike and 1200 foot elevation gain, scouts enjoy the comforts of the Snow Bowl Hut at the end of the road.

Camp Fire Mountain

Every year the troop goes to one of the Boy Scout summer camps in the area. This year, we returned to Camp Fire Mountain from August 2^nd to the 8^th. Scouts got to attend merit badge classes, go swimming or boating in the lake, shoot rifles, and go on the ropes course. At the end of the week, there was a big relay race that our troop had a team in, and camp-wide games. Summer camp is probably the best part of scouting.

Ape Caves

On the 18th of July, 7 scouts and 5 adults went on an outing to Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument. First, they went to the Johnston Ridge Observatory, then camped overnight. In the morning, they met with the survivors J of the Mount Saint Helens 50 miler to go hike through Ape Caves, a 2.47 mile long lava tube. This was a very fun outing, and it was very cool to hike in the caves.
