The 51st edition of the Baja 500 takes place on Saturday, June 1 but already the pre-running of the hazardous circuit is underway. All eyes are on the heavyweight Trophy Truck contest between serial winners Andy McMillin and Bryce Menzies.

McMillin is one of the few drivers in the sport who has won Baja’s coveted Triple Crown Overall title in a four-wheel vehicle: the San Felipe 250, the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000. Meanwhile, Menzies is a three-time Baja 500 winner with victories in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

Heading into this year’s Baja 500 it is Chevy driver McMillin who is riding high following his win at the San Felipe 250 in April. McMillin is a third generation offroad racer whose cousins Dan and Luke will also be racing this weekend in Mexico.

“It was a gnarly course, but I really like it. It was very fun, very challenging. I think the more the challenging the better.” – Andy McMillin celebrating victory at the SCORE San Felipe 250
McMillin’s victory at the recent San Felipe 250 was a hard-fought affair with Bryce Menzies ahead for much of the race.

Misfortune struck for Menzies an agonizing four miles from the finish line when a broken drive shaft wrecked his chances of winning. Menzies had to settle for an 11th place finish while McMillin passed him to take first place.
“We start 11th at this year’s Baja 500 and are ready to be back down south. Thank you to all the fans down in Baja for the support!” – Bryce Menzies
Menzies will be out to show his fighting spirit once again in his Ford machine this weekend at the Baja 500. In the past Menzies has fought back from setbacks to win Baja races as well as compete in the monumental Dakar and Silk Way Rallies. Menzies is also the proud holder of a world record thanks to his 379.2ft (115.6m) jump while at the wheel of his Pro2 truck.

Menzies will be hoping to arrive back in Ensenada, Mexico having leapt passed McMillin and the rest of his competitors this weekend. A packed field of talent includes last year’s Baja 500 winner Rob MacCachren as well as Ryan Arciero, Zak Langley, Cameron Steel and Robby Gordon.
In addition to top class competitors to battle against, there is also the infamously tough course to consider. The trucks, cars, UTVs, motorcycles and quads entered into the 2019 Baja 500 will face an ultra-challenging 487-mile (784km) route. The course will run in a clockwise loop, starting and finishing in Ensenada, taking in the wonderful scenery of the Northern Baja with plenty of difficult technical sections to come through.
By sheer numbers are the Geiser Bros. trophy-trucks leading. However, we see a trend - by results - over last years and this years SCORE Intl. races that indicate Jimco is picking up the pace. In particular Rob MacCachren is holding the Jimco flags up rocking the San Felipe race with wins at the Baja 250 (San Felipe 250) 2 times and the Primm replacement race Challenge of Champions last year.
The performance of the new Jimco trophy truck, basically out of the box, driven by Jimco owner Mike Julson, build for the Bad Apple Race Team, promise more exciting races to come.
On the ca. 250 mile route around San Felipe, contestants tackled several canyons between the Gulf of Mexico coast and the back-country. Typical for this race is that the 100 miles over washboard bumps pose a real test for man and machine.
All German Motorsports had prepared the AGM-Jimco X6 SCORE Trophy Truck for this challenge. After the team found that they needed even longer springs at the season-opening Laughlin Desert Challenge in January, their partner Eibach produced them. With partner FOX, the shocks absorbers had to be adjusted to fit the new springs, and partner Danzio retuned the engine. These preparations were successful: “I was really satisfied because the truck was very fast. As far as performance was concerned it’s very good. Especially on the very, very bumpy and hard passages, the truck did everything we wanted,” concludes Schwarz.

Initially the race was going just as well, although the ride over the washboards posed some minor difficulties. A glance at the interim standings shows just how fast the Trophy Truck was: After around 70 miles, Schwarz was running in third place overall. But then a bracket that holds the tank on the frame broke. “We had to weld that back on and that cost us about 20 minutes,” reports Schwarz. “Our pit crew did this excellently and we could continue. But then we lost some fuel as a result because the fast filling device leaked.” For this reason, the Trophy Truck stopped for a short while due to low fuel. The desert monster was refilled and the chase could continue.

But the final chop came at mile 158. Ten miles before handing the Trophy Truck over to his colleague and team boss Martin Christensen, Schwarz’s charge was halted by a transmission problem. All the gears could still work but the drive was lacking. The cause is not yet clear but it will be analysed over the next days.

Even though the much hoped for top ten result didn’t eventuate, Schwarz is still happy with the performance at the San Felipe 250: “I’m feeling very positive because now we can at least go flat out and match the pace. At mile 70 we were running in third and that is very good. We noticed from a driving point of view that the new springs and set-up have improved greatly compared to the season-opener Laughlin event. The performance was good and that’s how I imagined the truck to run. Now we just have to quickly find out what caused the drive problem. All the parts were new, in the gearbox and the rear axle, too. I’m sure that our partner Fortin will find the problem and fix it. They are untiring in their further development work with us.”
During the tests in the lead up to the San Felipe 250 work focussed on the set-up, so as to match the pace of the much heavier competition. Now the focus is on durability and this is what the AGM team are keen to quickly come to grips with.

Sharing the cockpit together for the first time, the pair brought home a decent fifth place in their class at the San Felipe 250. “That’s a great result. At least an All German Motorsports vehicle saw the finish line and with a great result at that – that’s really good,” said Schwarz.

Armin Kremer summed up: “I very quickly came to terms with the Class One Buggy – it handles brilliantly. Right from the start we could keep up with the top guys and Tony brought the Buggy home quickly and in one piece. That gives me a great feeling heading to the Baja 500.”

Now preparations begin at All German Motorsports for round three of the US SCORE Championship. From the 1st to 3rd June, the Baja 500 takes place with the start and finish in Mexico’s Ensenada. This event, is regarded as the ‘little sister’ to the notorious Baja 1000 that concludes the season from 14-17 November.

Jesse Jones #76 Trophy Truck

Looks like Jesse Jones is ready to put the pedal to the metal at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 with his Fox Shocks branded Trophy Truck
to review the 2011 Baja 1000 race and evaluate all that went right and how very little went wrong along the racecourse. “Curt LeDuc started the race for us, sixth off the line and by approximately mile 250, he had us in second place,” said Nick Vanderwey, the Flying Dutchmen driver of record. “Larry Vanderwey got it to me, still in second place and by
approximately mile 500, we were in first place and we held that
position and crossed the finish line first,” he added. “Unfortunately we were beat by corrected time and #31 of McMillin Racing took first place by 2min 35 secs.”

Nick and the #84 Trophy Truck came in 2nd overall and 2nd in Trophy Truck. After nearly 700 miles of racing, the Flying Dutchmen’s race temporarily came to a stop because a spectator car got high centered and stuck on the racecourse. After waiting for about a minute, Nick was forced to carefully push the car off the berm and out of the way. He was just seven miles from the finish at this point with Andy McMillin quickly closing the gap between them.
“I want to thank all our sponsors for their support and for making this race possible,” Nick said. The Flying Dutchmen are sponsored by: BF Goodrich; KC HiLights; King Shocks; Dougan’s Racing Engines; Rancho Drivetrain Engineering; Tubeworks; TrailReady Wheels; All Start Electric and “got milk?”
The Vanderweys ran the race on the new 42” BF Goodrich race tires. They were the only team racing on the 42”s. The huge tires are mounted on special 20” TrailReady beadlock wheels. “Those 42” BFGs have so much traction and can go over any rock. They are incredible,” Nick explained. “The KC lights were a great
asset. They got us through the most treacherous nighttime sections of the 1000.” The night run comprised 2/3 of this year’s Baja 1000, so lights were a key
component of a successful finish. “The KC lights were perfect for the night race,” he said, “and the King Shocks performed flawlessly,” he added.
The Vanderwey brothers Nick, Larry, John and Mike, comprise the Flying Dutchmen race team. They have been desert racing for 20 years. The #84 Trophy Truck was built in-house by Flying Dutchmen Racing. Nick, Larry and former Trophy Truck champion, Curt LeDuc, all drove the #84 in the 2011 Baja 1000.
The brothers have decided to open their own shop and race home in East County, California. When the location is secured, this 10,000 sq. ft building will be the new home of TSCO Racing. It will be a state of the art race prep & fabrication facility for their stable of Desert Trophy Trucks, and Luxury Raptor Prerunners. For the first time, they will be handling the race prep of their vehicles. This means ending a long-standing relationship with Stewarts Raceworks in Santee.

Craig Stewart and the team at Raceworks has been the main hub for TSCO’s race program for well over 12 years. They have prepped and prepared winning race vehicles for the Weyhrich’s race team admirably, allowing 3 BITD class one championships, countless class victory’s, and many overall victory’s in both Score & Best in the Desert Races.
Their value in allowing this team to succeed cannot be understated. Their support, will allow a smooth transition to a independent race program. Stewarts Luxury Prerunners are the best in the industry and will continue to guide the brothers on their pre-race excursions in Baja, and the States.

Heading up the new race shop, TSCO has hired John Vance to oversee and run the TSCO Racing operation. John is the perfect addition to the race program puzzle. His past racing experience will provide the leadership needed to allow the TSCO team to continue as a first class racing entity. John has been with MasterCraft Racing for the past year which ran both Desert races and Lucas Oil shortcourse races in 2011. John was also a General Manager with Jimco Racing for many years, and was instrumental in the design program for their winning class one and truck developments . His skills as a leader, as well as design and fabrication, will allow the TSCO Racing team to have continuing success.

Winning races cannot be accomplished without great race prep. For that, TSCO has hired Ryan “Chow” Williams to continue his role as lead prep on the race truck program. Ryan’s dedication to the TSCO team has been unwavering. He continues, year after year to provide a top notch truck that is capable of winning race after race. His duties as head mechanic will continue, and his on going experience as the lead co-rider will allow the Weyhrich’s confidence to build, knowing they have a safe and competitive race vehicle. Ryan’s work allowed the Wehyrich’s to win a Toyota Milestone Award this year for completing every mile of every Score race in 2011. With top 5 finishes in every Score race this year, except for the 1000, his position on the team is invaluable. The TSCO Team proudly finish 3rd in the SCORE Trophy Truck Points Championship.

Hired last year, Michael “Bear” Baranowski , will continue his pit vehicle management, crew liaison and other team involvement with day to day race operations.

Also, The Weyhrich’s could not do this without the continued support of their valuable volunteer crew. Each member’s dedication and commitment has been an incredible reason this team is capable of winning each time they race. The Weyhrich’s are committed to providing the best equipment, and this will continue to allow the crew to progress, improve and prosper. John Vance has chase crew aspirations that will allow the TSCO crew to be the best in the business. He has experienced crew members that will be joining the TSCO team making them even stronger.

With the excitement these big changes bring, The Weyhrich’s and the TSCO Racing Team look forward to another successful desert racing season in 2012 and beyond. Watch for the #9 and #98 in next years Score and BITD series.

The 2011 team will feature the “OG”, or original, Geiser Bros. truck as well as the newest Geiser effort as they have rolled the 33rd truck they have ever built into the DA stable. “The idea is to fortify the effort of our team and our partners including Yokohama Tire who bring their all new 40 inch tire to the Baja 1000 for the first time ever” said team driver Cameron Steele.

Cameron will drive his trademark #16 Monster Energy/Yokohama Tire/Lucas Oil/KMC Wheels/ReadyLift truck off the line in Ensenada Friday November 18th with his long time navigator Cody Stuart.
The second truck representing the Desert Assassins at the 2011 SCORE Baja 1000 will be the #14 truck driven by Rick Geiser. Rick and his brother Jeff are the preeminent builders in the class and Rick has both driven and engineered Trophy Truck Championships and wins.

Geiser and Steele have been partners for most of the last four years and the two have chosen two stellar drivers to join them for this Baja 1000. Pat Dean of Las Vegas has a long family history of winning in off-road and teamed with Cameron for the 2010 Baja 1000 and will again take the wheel for the DA. New to the Baja 1000 driving squad is Josh Daniel who has been a part of the DA for years and has been driving Geiser Bros. Trophy Trucks for Riot Racing the last couple of years.

“Originally we considered having two 3 driver teams and had been working on that much of the year but after John (Marking, who drove with the team at the Baja 500) had back surgery later this year Rick and I decided to go with a four driver squad for the two trucks” said Steele. The way the driving duties are set up Steele could very well drive both the #16 and #14 in this year’s event. Cameron is the only person to have driven a Trophy Truck, a limited buggy and ridden an Open Pro motorcycle in one Baja race so driving two Trophy Trucks would seem normal for Steele.

“The team we have put together has been behind the wheel all year and the effort we will put forward at this Baja 1000 will give both trucks the opportunity to be on the podium” said Rick.

“My section will be grueling and treacherous, however everyone knows how the Desert Assassins pre run and prepare for our sections. I plan on handing off the truck in good shape and in good position to give us the chance to win” said Daniel, who continued “Racing the Baja 1000 with one of my best friends (Steele) does it get any better than that”?

The drawing for starting positions was October 15th and the team has drawn start positions 24 and 25 out of 32 trucks in the field. "The decision has yet to be made on who will drive which truck but I can tell you that I feel both trucks have an equal capability of winning" said Steele. The team recently finished 5th in the SCORE Challenge of Champions and 2nd in the Best in the Desert Blue Water Challenge.

AGM TT #15 - it has been a long, but very rewarding project so far states Martin Christensen, team principal All German Motorsports. From the moment they decided to move up to SCORE’s premier Trophy Truck class, they knew that just buying a run of the mill truck would not work for them. So in true All German Motorsports fashion they set out to redesign the wheel, so to speak. The overall idea would be the same - four wheels, live axle rear end, front engine, two shocks per corner, but from there the design we came up with would take a different direction. The basic idea was to create a smaller, lighter, more nimble version of what was racing currently.
The goal being to design and manufacture every part 30% lighter than comparable items on other truck, without sacrificing strength or reliability. Now it’s all go: In late September the new desert monster will be presented in Germany, with which rally ace Armin Schwarz and the All German Motorsports team tackle the US SCORE Championship. Here are the first impressions and technical description of the vehicle for those who simply can’t wait any longer.

Team boss Martin Christensen and his crew are working flat out round the clock on the new vehicle. All German Motorsports assemble the Trophy Truck in the USA in close collaboration with Jimco, the most experienced and best chassis manufacturer in the international offroad scene. Jimco is responsible for the chassis and the construction of the vehicle. TriStar Metals, a US subsidiary of Stammcut, supply premium quality material for the new frame under the X6 silhouette.

The design of the new Trophy Truck was developed in close cooperation with the creative team of Achim Storz. DESIGN STORZ based in Zell am See (Austria) developed the silhouette of the Trophy Truck with the body of the BMW X6 as an inspiration. The team found the greatest challenges in realising the idea of this special shape while incorporating the technical features of a Trophy Truck.

Another partner is Meziere Enterprises, a long-standing supporter of AGM that specialises in machined and lathed parts for racing. Team boss Christensen spent many nights with engineers from Meziere, developing calculations, drawings and CAD data. “There is an incredible amount of machined parts on this Trophy Truck. We rely on the lightweight construction – whether it’s aluminium, magnesium or titanium – that Meziere has made for us,” says Armin Schwarz. All carbon-fibre components on the vehicle, for instance the internal parts that are exposed to strong vibrations, are supplied by partner Lynx Composites.

With the suspension, All German Motorsports places it trust in partners Eibach and Fox. They equip the Trophy Truck not only with springs and shock absorbers, but also contribute to the planning. In conjunction with Eibach and Fox, team boss Christensen calculated what the suspension must withstand and provide taking the weight of the vehicle into consideration.
SCORE has released the updated season point standings following final data-tracking review and release of the final revised results from the Tecate SCORE Baja 500.

Menzies, who opened the season by winning the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in January, drove to a penalty-free victory as well in June’s 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500 to assume a commanding lead in the SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck
point standings in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150. Sandwiched between his first two career SCORE race wins in the marquee racing division for high-tech, 850-horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Menzies finished sixth in SCORE Trophy-Truck at the 25th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March.

Round 4 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be the inaugural Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions, Sept. 9-11, San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. The computerized drawing for starting positions, by class, will be held Saturday, August 6 at the SCORE headquarters in Los Angeles. The event will feature 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks and the race route for this new event will be the same approximately 250 mile course used at this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March.

SCORE points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class, Menzies, 23, who had only raced the 2010 SCORE Baja 500 where he finished seventh in his first start in SCORE Trophy-Truck, has 243 championship points following Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series. SCORE Trophy-Truck has had the largest starting field for all three races with 32 in Laughlin, 24 in San Felipe and 28 in Ensenada.

"Somebody needs to pinch me and tell me I'm not just dreaming all this," said Menzies recently. "We have such a great team and our vehicle is prepped so magnificently but with the world's best racers in SCORE Trophy-Truck, I am stunned that we are on top of the board right now. I couldn't do any of this without the unconditional support from my dad (team owner Steve Menzies) and I continue to learn so much from him every day, that I just hope I can keep learning, stay patient and don't do anything stupid in the last two races to diminish the great success we have had so far this season. It's unbelievable. I'm from Las Vegas and honestly what would the odds be for a rookie to be doing this well in the sport's marquee racing division in the world's best desert racing series."

Trophy Truck Race

Trophy Truck Race - We are making progress with the website and think we can open pretty soon.
