Well the oto's have bred again, as of today I have about 8 wrigglers in a tub, I pruned the tank and rescued the eggs from the bottom part of the plants before I threw them away....it took nearly an hour to check every leaf for eggs!!!

I'm going to empty the Oto Nursery of the bigger ones...I think there are 4, when the new wrigglers are big enough to go into the nursery. The juvenile oto that grew up in the breeding tank is doing really well but he could probably do with some friends, I think the 4 juvies will enjoy the freedom of the open swimming space :D

Hi all. I'm trying to set up a well planted tropical tank - haven't filled it up yet, so no water chemistry. I've got Eco-Complete gravel (well - there's gravel in there at least. Mostly slime :)), which is mixed grain but in places somewhat coarse. I'd like to get a bottom feeder (or a few), both for the dubious cleanliness reasons, and just because I want some.

Tank is 125 litre, approximately 80 by 35 cm across the bottom.

Are there any such fish that are happy in gravel? Or will I have to invent a way to keep half of my tank gravelly and half sandy? Could take a while... :p

[edit - sorry, should add this is going to be a community tank, so the more peaceful the better]

Cheers.

Hello all. First post, and first tank (unless you count a somewhat disastrous family attempt years ago).

My first question: Where I live (in Bath) we have somewhat... erm... interesting water, so I'm being pretty cautious before I put anything with a face in my tank. :)

I'd like to test for free chlorine and chloramine, because I couldn't get a really straight answer out of my water supplier. Practical Fishkeeping seem to think there's 0.07 mg/l of chloramine in the water somewhat near here, which sounds like quite a bit if it's even more toxic to fish than chlorine is.

Anyway - sorry to be longwinded - what I want to know is can I use swimming pool / spa test kits for this? I've read things that seem to indicate yes, but I'm worried they won't be sensitive enough, or sensitive to chloramine at all.

If not, can anyone recommend a good choice for the UK mainland? Thanks a lot; Confuseling - a small confused thing.

Just wondered if anyone might be able to help me diagnose / suggest treatment for my plec. He seems to have a lump with a red patch under his front fin and has developed some lumps around his gills / face. I don't see him much as he's quite the recluse, but my partner saw him briefly yesterday and says he didn't notice the lumps. Here's a couple of pics, although they're not that great because of where he is in the tank, but hopefully will give you an idea. A previous long fin bristlenose developed an ulcer on her underside which I tried treating with an anti-bacterial agent (Pets At Home own brand one), but that didn't seem to work and she died after a couple of weeks. I'm hoping he's not going the same way. I've also got a female LFBN in the same tank - haven't seen her today but she looked fine yesterday. Other livestock are 12 Malawi cichlids. Substrate is playsand and I have Tufa rock, an imitation rock formation (plastic), one small imitation plant and a lump of bogwood in there too

Test results are:
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - 0
pH - 7.9

Thanks for any help or suggestions you might have.

I recently bought two Black Khuli loaches, 1 tiger stripped one browny black. The tiger stripped loach darts off behind the urn and sits there until the light goes out at night then he's out to sort of stealth about and see what's what. However the other Black Khuli was only inclined this way for the first two days, now he comes out when the light is on and darts around the tank anyone who owns a Black Khuli will know thier movement is sort of eel like. Mine is eel like but he's twisting and turning alot as if he doesn't know what to do. Even with the light off he rarely settles for more than ten minuets. I can't tell wether he's stressed or just hyper active and it worries me because he annoys the Dwarf Gouramis by doing so and I love every fish in my tank so Im worried sick about one of them being stressed and causing the rest of the tank to be upset.

Hi I'm Lee or McMonkeyBoy & Im an alcoholic...Oh wait wrong forum

I've only recently started keeping tropical fish after spending my entire life watching and caring for goldfish! My longest surviving fish so far was a weather loach called Jeff. I had him for eight years and he grew to a very impressive 20cm.

I have recently set up my own tropical tank the litres of which illudes me but I shall post with details later on. I currently have two Dwarf Gouramis, two Red Robin Gouramis, Two black khuli loaches one of which is tiger stripped & five black phantom tetras. There's also a catfish that I have only seen once since I got it and I can't remember what it is! Permanently hides on the dark side of the filter. I do intend to get more fish but not too many as the tanks only a 21/2 footer. I've joined the forums looking for advice and for plain old pleasure really. So I look forward to speaking to you guys :D

Hi all

One of my female kutubu has had a mark on her side for about 3 months. It is a slightly raised bump, looks like no scale there. I have treated it previously with a combination of melafix, daily water changes and a little extra Nutrafin Aqua+ with the changes. I have just noticed it is back again, this time with a small, raised white dot on it. I have tried to take pics, but they are such fast moving fish! I have also used protozin in the tank about a month ago for a fungal problem with a gourami which subsequently died, and her mark seemed to have almost gone at that point (may be coincidental). Also put some garlic in the tank today.

Water params are all fine. Temp is currently 25, has been at 27-29 over the last 2 weeks, but well filtered and aerated and no obvious problems. Also, don't know if it's related, but it looks lke one of the kutubu is dropping poo that has a distinct red colour to it. Their flakes have some red colouring, but I've not seen any poo that colour before in the bottom of the tank.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Hi everyone I'm just after some opinions and advice (as well as being a little nosy :p) as to what sort of water changes people are doing and maybe what I should or could be doing. I've recently scaled back the electronic commitment with the tanks, (pretty much every filter and heater and pump I've ever owned was running) and as well as saving about 4 units of electric a day I'm trying to streamline my maintenance routine to save me some time. Currently my routine is taking over an hour a week.

It was ok to be tripping over buckets and wires and have odd tanks here and there in the past but now I've actually been spending money  I'm trying to integrate the tanks into the room décor and get things running smoothly. I feel like I might have become a little obsessive over my water change routines after a chat with 'the old chap who just got rid of 60+ tanks' at wharf I am not sure what I should be doing. Currently I am.

Changing 15% twice a week on a 240L, silver dollars, oscar, common plec,
Changing 15% twice a week on a 200L, severum, saum, BN ancistrus,
Changing 15% twice a week on a 180L, mixed community tropical,
Changing 20% twice a week on a 90L, coldwater fancy goldfish,

I'm doing a straight water change midweek and a gravel vac and swirl on the weekend. Goldies get their filter media squeezed weekly, others on a monthly+ basis. Tanks are not overstocked. Feed two or three times a day. I do feed things like frozen prawns, fresh vegetables, frozen peas. I don't find that tanks look dirty. Water isn't as clear as I'd like but most of it seems to be suspended air bubbles from the filter outlets. I use filter floss in some baskets to polish.

Anyway. Some people I know change 15% every two weeks. Some people I know change 25% every month. Some people I know change 50% daily. The guy at wharf told me that overstocking is a myth and that 25% a week in one go is all you ever need to do. This was a surprise to me because my head is full of overstocking, bacterial blooms, bioload and oxygen availability but I suppose in an established tank bacteria doubles in number very quickly and if there is 'food' for them then it would be long at all until numbers have grown to cope and most fish can adapt to tolerate high nitrates if built up over time and then kept stable.

I guess if I wanted to be obsessive about it I should get a nitrate test kit and establish an upper limit of maybe 20ppm and then adjust my changes to accommodate. What are people here doing?
