Wedding Attire
The “Holoku” is the traditional Hawaiian wedding dress. Its silhouette is reminiscent of the afternoon tea dress of the Victorian era. It features a high neck, long sleeves and a fitted bodice. The hemline flares in a trumpet or mermaid style. Modern Hawaiian dresses may use a lower neckline, off the shoulder style or sleeveless and may be shorter. However, most styles feature the fitted bodice and long skirt. The dress is typically white silk, cotton or fine linen.
Many brides choose a tropical fashion for a wedding dress. This can be a long or short style, strapless or halter neckline with a fitted or flared skirt. The print can reflect the beautiful flowers of Hawaii in bright or pastel shades. The groom may choose a matching shirt and choose white linen pants or shorts. The attendants may be attired in the same print or may mix and match prints. The bride may substitute a wreath of flowers instead of the traditional veil.
Finding Hawaiian fashions locally can be a challenge, especially out of season. Try sites like Tropiholic.com for a wide selection of moderately priced tropical fashions, resort wear and accessories for men, women and children.
Hawaiian Wedding Customs
Leis – For women, tradition dictates all white flowers of the pikake flower, commonly known as white jasmine. For the groom, green leaves, white jasmine blossoms and orange petals are used.
Conch Shell – Hawaiians traditionally blow a shell at the beginning of the wedding ceremony to summon good spirits.
Pandango (“Money Dance”) – This custom is popular in the Philippines but also practiced at Hawaiian weddings. At the first dance, guests tuck or pin money to the bridal couple’s clothing.
Origami Cranes – Traditionally, the bride creates 1,000 paper cranes for her wedding day. In Japanese folklore, cranes are supposed to live for 1,000 years. This custom is supposed to bring good luck and a long life to the married couple. The Hawaiians have added one additional crane, making 1,001 cranes. The extra crane is usually made by the groom.
Hawaiian Wedding Song – A tune popularized by Elvis Presley can be played on the ukulele to add a romantic touch to the ceremony.

Harvey is famed for his dynamic paintings of sport fish, which are often set against the backdrop of their ocean environment.

Guy Harvey, born in 1955, grew up in Jamaica, fishing and diving in the Caribbean waters off the island’s southern shore. His early ocean explorations fueled his fascination with creatures of the deep, and he spent many hours sketching the marine life he witnesses there. He pursued an education in marine biology at Scotland’s Aberdeen University, earning his undergraduate degree in 1977. He returned to the Caribbean to pursue graduate studies, completing a doctorate in fisheries management in 1982 at the University of the West Indies. While engaged in his scientific training, he continued his art and developed a following of loyal fans for his highly detailed portraits of marine life.

As a young student, he was captivated by Ernest Hemingway’s classic novella “The Old Man and the Sea.” Harnessing his artistic talents, Harvey sketched a series of pen-and-ink drawings illustrating Hemingway’s story of Santiago’s battle with a giant marlin. A 1985 exhibit of these drawings in a Kingston, Jamaica gallery launched his career as an artist.

Harvey continued his study of marine life, traveling the world, embarking on scuba diving expeditions and mastering underwater photography, which allowed him to paint with greater detail and accuracy the leaping sports fish and other creatures of the ocean.

In 1999, Harvey collaborated with the Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center to establish the Guy Harvey Research Institute, a conservation organization seeking to preserve species endangered by the oceans’ changing ecosystem. Harvey also funds research in the field of wild fish management through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from his art sales is dedicated to these causes.

Harvey has received numerous awards for his conservation efforts and his contributions to the sports-fishing industry. Currently, he works from his art studio in Grand Cayman where he lives with his wife and children. Guy Harvey clothing can be purchased at Tropiholic.com, along with Hawaiian dresses and other quality tropical fashions.

You do not have to live on the Big Island to wear a great Hawaiian dress. Tropical fashion is an ideal choice for women throughout the spring and the summer. The key to finding a great Hawaiian dress, however, is to carefully select a silhouette and a color scheme that is complementary to your skin tone and to your body type. Here are a few important tips to keep in mind as you are selecting the perfect Hawaiian dress for your next big event:

1) Select an airy, cotton or silk-like fabric for maximum breathability. You are going to be wearing your dress during the hot days of summer and spring, so stay cool with a dress that is light and moves.

2) Purchase a dress with bold, bright colors, but remember that too much color can be overwhelming. That is why it is better to select an Hawaiian dress that uses two or three main colors, such as magenta, gold and green.

3) Wear your dress on special occasions. Who said resort wear was just for the beach? Why not wear a fantastic Hawaiian dress for a unique wedding dress? This is a perfect option for a tropical destination wedding. Be creative with your bridal attire!

4) Do not be afraid to accessorize. That is right. Even with the colorful palette customary for an Hawaiian dress, you still need a little jewelry. Add gold earrings, metallic sandals, and maybe even a flower in your hair. You will be ready for a beach date or a casual daytime picnic. Either way, you will be stylish.

5) Select a dress that you can shape. Usually Hawaiian dresses are loose-fitting. But you can change that by purchasing a dress that can change shape. Simply add a belt to create a waist on your dress. Slip on a shawl or a cardigan to dress up a colorful Hawaiian dress. Purchase a dress with detachable straps so that you can wear the dress both as a strapless ensemble and as a more formal or conservative sundress.

With a little imagination and a little work, you can find the perfect Hawaiian dress that will keep you fashionable no matter where you go. Whether you are island-hopping or just attending a backyard BBQ, you will find instant style and say something about your colorful personality buy purchasing a new Hawaiian dress for your next big social event!

Whether one is truly on vacation or simply relaxing close to home, wearing resort wear is celebratory of all the good things in life: friends, family, warmth, relaxation, laughter, love and vitality. Wearing clothing that one would literally pack for their next vacation does not have to be reserved for said vacation or even exclusively for the beach. Linens, pastels, swim suits, tropical prints, flowing skirts, peasant-style shirts, sandals, straw hats, cowrie shell accessories, sunglasses, Bermuda shorts and tank tops all fit the bill.

Flip flops wear wonderfully in the garden and all over town, offering the feet plenty of room to breathe. Loose linen clothing offers good circulation around the skin. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and wearing comfortable, vacation-style clothing is one way to take care of it. The Hawaiian shirt from last summer’s trip to Maui is perfectly appropriate for the first barbecue of the spring. A beer in hand completes the outfit’s allure. Resort wear has been proven to affect the mental states of those wearing it by  inducing memories of trips and cruises past.

In land-locked New Mexico, the ocean beach is an airplane flight away, but the sand dunes with their white silken sands are just a drive away. Residents “weekend” at the dunes in beach clothes as if the ocean was right around the corner. Bikinis, beach balls and beach chairs abound.

Most cities and towns have at least one public or recreational club pool that attracts sunbathers in all their glory. Beach sand is even shipped in to complete the surrounding aesthetic quality. Resort-inspired clothing, swimwear, towels and coverups are downright fashionable while relaxing poolside.

When one is wearing vacation-inspired threads, one is keeping the tropical energy close to heart and mind. The finest example of this is on the island of St. John in the Caribbean, where many Americans have made their home. Always sunny, beautiful, warm and tropical, resort threads are a way of life that never gets old. Socks are a thing of the past and sandals reign. Drinks flavored with passion fruit close out perfect evenings. Eyes stay protected with sunglasses and the heart stays occupied with beauty all around. Resort clothing speaks of humanity’s greatest desires for freedom.

Hawaiian shirts, also commonly known as aloha shirts, are a cultural symbol of Hawaii recognized by everyone around the world. Hawaii’s year-round tropical weather makes the lightweight and comfortable Hawaiian shirt the perfect attire for locals and visitors alike. Wearing a Hawaiian Shirt in Hawaii is something that makes tourists feel at home and blend with the local environment and at the same time feel comfortable and stylish. They are also a simple, great way to remember paradise when you are back at home.

The modern Hawaiian shirt was born in the early 1930’s by a Chinese merchant named Ellery Chun. The cultural phenomenon began when Chun started sewing together vibrantly colored shirts for tourists out of his old kimono fabrics that were leftover in stock. A local newspaper called the Honolulu Advertiser quickly took notice and coined the term “Aloha shirt” for this growing new trend. It wasn’t long before local residents and tourists bought every shirt Chun had in stock. Within just a couple of years, major designer labels were springing up all over Hawaii, selling mass amounts of Hawaiian shirts.

After WW2 ended, service men and women returned to the United States from the Pacific islands with their new Hawaiian shirts. Shortly after, in the 1950s, tourists began flocking to Hawaii, particularly after Hawaii became a state in 1959. Hawaiian shirts began flying off the shelves. A textile manufacturer named Alfred Shaheen then revolutionized the Hawaiian shirt industry by providing both aloha shirts and other ready-to-wear Hawaiian clothing like sundresses all under one roof. Shaheen made artistic and high-grade shirts and clothing that raised Hawaiian shirts to the level of high-fashion and soon Hollywood stars began discovering them. It wasn’t long after that celebrities like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra started to wear and promote Aloha Shirts, contributing greatly to their popularity.

Another milestone contributing to the widespread popularity of Hawaiian shirts was Aloha week, a festival of music, dancing, sports and traditions created to celebrate the Hawaii’s rich culture. Aloha week was changed to the month long Aloha Festivals in 1991.

Aloha Friday was also officially established in 1966, allowing companies to provide their employees with an opportunity to wear Hawaiian shirts on the last business day of the week a few months out of the year. By 1970 in Hawaii, Hawaiian shirts had gained acceptance as business attire for any day of the week. By 1990 in the United States, Aloha Friday had grown rapidly and eventually evolved into what some now know as Casual Friday.
