<itunes:summary>It is Critically Important to Backup WordPress Websites and Blogs
It is always a good idea to make regular backups of your WordPress website.  I would highly recommend backups before periodic events such as WordPress upgrades, WordPress theme updates, and installation or upgrade of WordPress plugins.

In order to be able to reconstruct your website or blog in case anything goes wrong, you’ll need to backup WordPress files residing on your web host server as well as the WordPress MySQL database. With copies of both these items, you can recreate the website as it was at the time of the backup, if required to do so.

In order to backup the database you will need the WordPress Database Backup plugin.

Below are 4 simple steps backup WordPress database and files
Step 1 Choose Backup from Menu
From the Dashboard, locate the Tools menu and click on Backup as shown on the right: -
Step 2 Select Backup Options
On the resulting page, Backup, scroll to “Backup Options” and:-

Specify your email for “Email backup to:”
Click on “Download to your computer”.
And then, click on “Backup now!” button.

You will be asked to save the back to your computer.  Create a folder on your computer and save the database file.
Step 3 Schedule Backups
Scroll down to Schedule Backup section, click “Once Daily” (or Weekly if you prefer), and specify your email (“Email backup to:”).

Then click on “Schedule backup” button.

You will now receive email with your WordPress MySQL database as an attachment.  You should keep several copies of these handy just in case you need them.
Step 4 Backup WordPress Folders and Files
Using an FTP program such as FileZilla, select all the files in your domain and copy them by dragging them to a folder on your local computer as shown below: -

Please see video demonstration of how to setup Filezilla to your webserver.

<itunes:summary>Robots.txt Is An Important File On Your Webserver
Robots.txt is an important file to create and maintain on your webserver.  It resides in the same directory as the WordPress configuration (wp-config.php) that can be used to control what the search engines, and other potentially malicious automated software processes, can access on your WordPress website or blog.  You can find out more robots.txt here.

Here are the steps to create and maintain your robots.txt file.  In this example, I’m using Hostgator cpanel.  If you have another hosting provider, the steps should be similar, especially if they offer a cpanel interface as well.
Step 1
From your cpanel, click on File Manager.

Step 2
Then navigate to the domain name you set up for your website.  Locate and click on the robots.txt file and then click on Edit as shown below: -

If the robots.txt file does not exist, you can create one by clicking on the “New File” icon on the File Manager menu bar as shown below: -

Name the file robots.txt and click on “Create New File” as shown below: -

Be sure to name the file "robots.txt".
Step 3
Once you have the file open, add the following lines to the robots.txt: -

User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-
Disallow: /search
Disallow: /feed
Disallow: /comments/feed
Disallow: /feed/$
Disallow: /*/feed/$
Disallow: /*/feed/rss/$
Disallow: /*/trackback/$

After adding the above lines have been added, click on “Save Changes”, and you done.

Watch the video below for the steps outlined above.

<itunes:summary>The navigation scheme you use on your website or blog is very important and must accomodate your visitors so that they get the best possible user experience whilst on your website. As search engines evolve, user experience will become increasingly important, and as such it is important to plan and build an intuitive and consistent navigational scheme on your website.
Creating and Managing Genesis Framework Navigation Menus is a Snap!
Once you have created some basic content (pages and posts) for your website or blog, you will need to create navigational menu(s) in order for them to be made easily accessible. All Genesis child themes can support multiple navigational menus, up to three, though some child themes have support for only one, perhaps two navigational menus.

The Genesis Framework themes all come with built-in support for WordPress page and page navigation. Additionally the Genesis Framework navigation menus you create can be easily placed anywhere on the site that has a place for a WordPress widget.

In this article I will use an example involving the Genesis News child theme with the following pages: Home, Articles, About, Contact, and Sitemap, to create a couple of navigational menus.

Step 1.Make sure you are logged in to the Dashboard. On the Appearance Menu, click the “Menus” submenu. You will then see the Menus page, similar to the one shown below: -

Step 2.We’ll create the primary menu first. On the Menus page, type in a name for our menu and then click “Create Menu” button on the right side of the page. Menu name can be anything you like, in my example I named it “PrimaryNav”.

You will get a confirmation message that the menu has been created. Now from the “Pages” section, select “Articles” and “Home” (as used in this example) and then click on the “Add to Menu” button as shown below: -

The Home and Articles pages will then appear on the PrimaryNav menu: -

Click on the Save Menu.
Step 3. Next, we need to create the secondary menu which will contain the About and Contact pages. Create the secondary menu by clicking on “+” icon as shown on the right (next to the PrimaryNav menu, just created).   Specify a menu name – I decided to call it SecondaryNav – and then click on the “Create Menu” button.
Step 4. As before, from the Pages section, select About, Contact, and Sitemap pages and then click on “Add to Menu” button. The SecondaryNav menu should then contain these three pages.
Click on the “Save Menu” button.
Step 5. Now we need to “hook” up the menu in their appropriate places within the theme. On the “Theme Locations” section, select PrimaryNav menu as the Primary Navigation Menu. Select SecondaryNav for the Top Navigation Menu.

Click on the “Save” button to save these changes.

The StudioPress Genesis child themes all have provisions for a customizing the footer for its child themes - just one of the features that makes the Genesis Framework so powerful and convenient.  There are just a few steps to modifying the vanilla Genesis footer.

Although the footer can be modified to have a significant amount of information, I recommend that you keep the inforamtion contained in the genesis footer to a minimum... copyright, return to top of page, and, of course, a link back to WordPress site.

Other information such as privacy statements, sitemaps, social media links, recent posts, etc. should be in the footer widgets, residing either above or below the Genesis footer.
For a very simple way to edit Genesis child theme footers, use the Genesis Child Theme Settings Plugin

		<itunes:summary>Installing the Genesis Framework
There are 2 steps involved in setting up a Genesis WordPress website or blog.  First, the framework or the parent Genesis theme needs to be installed but do not activate it, and then, secondly, install your favorite child theme.

Once the framework and Genesis child themesare installed, you can customize the Genesis settings from the WordPress Dashboard.

		<itunes:summary>Rename WordPress Database Tables
WordPress database tables in MySQL contain most of everything that WordPress needs to operate including website content and  configuration parameters for themes and plugins – something hackers would love to get to!   All default WordPress installations have MySQL database table prefix of “wp_”.  Fortunately, it is pretty simple to rename WordPress database tables.
Altering WordPress "wp_" Tables Prefixes
Modifying the default WordPress table prefixes to something other than “wp_” will reduce the chances of your website or blog being compromised.  There are many different ways to accomplish this task, though using a WordPress Plugin is probably the easiest way to do it.

The recommended plugin for renaming WordPress table prefixes is from a company called SeoEggHead.

You can download the plugin here.

<itunes:summary>Change Default WordPress Admin Account. It's Good Practice
Most WordPress installation scripts, by default, create an administrator account called “admin”.  If you do not change default WordPress admin account, then you’re giving would-be hackers half the information that they would need to compromise your WordPress website or blog… they would only have to guess only your password since they would already know the username.
Not Perfect, But Still Recommended
Although replacing the default WordPress admin account is by no means a guarantee of keeping the system 100% secure, it does make it much harder for it to be compromised.  And so, changing the default admin account name to something other than “admin” is a good idea and should be done for all new installs.  Even for existing WordPress sites, the process to change it is the same and very simple.
