Forgotten Windows 7 Password - FIX / Workaround

This step-by-step workaround requires the Windows 7 or Windows Vista installation CD/DVD to reset the user account password. Please follow the steps below:

1. Boot your computer from the Windows 7 Installer CD/DVD.

Make sure you insert first your CD/DVD. Then restart your computer and as soon as it starts to turn back on, keep pressing the DEL or F2 key to enter the BIOS screen. Make sure to move the CD/DVD ROM option as the first priority. Continue to save the settings and as soon as it restarts again, it will ask you to press any key to boot from the CD/DVD.

2. Follow the Installer screen prompts and as soon as you reach a screen that has the Repair Windows option, kindly select that and proceed until you are given the option to select the Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt.

3. We are going to backup a Windows tool and replace it with the Command Prompt application. Type these commands as shown in order using the Command Prompt screen.

3.1. copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\f
3.2. copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe
3.3. Exit the installation CD/DVD and reboot your PC normally.

4. We will now reset your Windows 7 user password.

4.1. While at the Windows 7 account login screen, press the SHIFT key 5 times or until it brings up the Command Prompt screen.
4.2. Type this (without the "<, >"): net user <your login username> <your new password>
For example - net user troubleshooting101 123456. This means that troubleshooting101 user will have a password of 123456.

5. You should now be able to access the user account using the new password you have assigned to it.

Repair WinRE

WinRE stands for Windows Recovery Environment. This is a set of tools to help diagnose and recover from serious errors which may prevent Windows from booting successfully. This function is supported or installed along with Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012.

You might be in the process of recovering your system or just checking out the WinRE tools. But at some point, your WinRE doesn't seem to work. Here's what you can try. Follow the steps below:

Open an elevated Command Prompt (administrator command prompt)
Type: Reagentc /disable
Type: Reagentc /enable

Try again to run your WinRE and should work now.

You can also use the same command lines when booting up from installer disc to recover your Windows.

Administrator Command Prompt

There are different ways to launch an administrator mode command prompt or some techy people would call it elevated command prompt. Here's a couple:

1. Click on your Windows Start button.
2. Navigate to All Programs > Accessories folder
3. Right click on Command Prompt.
4. Then left click on Run as Administrator
5. The User Account Control (UAC) may pop-up. Just make sure to allow or say yes to it.

The second way to do it is pretty much easy, try this:

1. Press the Windows key + R key to launch the Run window.
2. Type in the Run box CMD
3. Press and hold down CTRL + SHIFT
4. Click on the Run OK button.

Windows XP Service Pack Installation "Access Denied Error"

If you're getting a "Access Denied Error" when trying to install Service Pack in your Windows XP, try this fix:

1. Download this Microsoft FixIt: 50389
2. Run the MSI package installer in your computer.
3. Reboot your computer if installer prompts.

Note: You can also download this MS FixIt from another computer then you can just save it in a flash drive and bring it to the computer that has the Access Denied Error problem.

How to remove Service Pack 1 in Windows 7

If for some reason you would need to remove or uninstall SP1 from your Windows 7, here's how to do it using a command line:

1. Open command prompt in administrator mode.
> click on Windows Start
> open Accessories folder
> right click on Command Prompt
> click on Run as Administrator (allow if the User Account Control prompts)

2. In the command prompt window type the command below then press enter:
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976932

NOTE:

Service Pack 1 could no longer be removed or uninstalled if disk cleanup was done and the SP1 backup file was included. If this is the case, System Restore is the only way to remove Service Pack 1.

You may experience the following error when installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) when installing on Intel iMAC using Bootcamp to run Windows XP.

Here's how to fix it:

1. Click Start – Run – Type “regedit” and press enter.
2. Navigate to

Windows Anytime Upgrade Will Not Work (Won't Upgrade)

If you can't seem to upgrade your system using your Windows Anytime Upgrade kit or product key, check if your Windows 7 already has Service Pack 1 installed. If there's none, that can be the cause of the problem.

Install Service Pack 1 for your Windows 7 then the upgrade process should work just fine. You can get Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from this LINK.

If by any chance, still it doesn't work, then try this:

Run Regedit and search for the original product key. OR in HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-##########-########-#....etc, locate Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsAnytimeUpgrade

Delete the:

ProductKey REG_SZ

ProductKeyPurchasedOnline

Close Registry editor

Rerun the Windows Anytime Upgrade from Computer Properties screen, and the system will ask for a new key. Obtain the correct key and you should be good to go.

How to fix "Application not found" error in Windows XP

If your Windows XP computer programs are not launching with many icons opening an “Application not found”, it can be pretty frustrating, especially if everything had been working fine just prior to this error message.

The problem is often due to a corrupt registry. Prior to attempting to complete the steps below, be sure to scan your PC for Viruses or Malware. If you cannot do that first, then run the fix below and immediately scan afterwards.

The following will correct the error in your registry:

1. Click Windows Start, then open Run. This will open a run command window. Or just press simultaneiously the Windows key and R in your keyboard.

2. Type notepad and hit enter to launch notepad. If it will still not open, reboot in safe mode (Instructions Here).

3. Copy or type all the text blow in notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]

@=”\”%1\” %*”

4. Save this file - using File then Save As. Save it to your desktop.

a. use this as the File Name – fix.reg

b. use this as the Save As Type – All Files

5. Double click this new fix.reg file on your desktop

a. Click YES to confirm the registry change

6. Reboot your PC .

7. Try to launch a program again. If this was the error, you should be able to open or run programs again.

8. Scan for viruses and malware as a final step to get rid of the cause of the corrupted registry.

Follow these directions:

Download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and remove the .NET
framework 1.1 from the machine.

Download .NET framework 1.1 from the Microsoft website and install it. Follow this link to download:

Reboot your machine, then install .NET 1.1 SP1 from the Microsoft website and reboot your computer again. Then try to take the update once again.

Windows XP Extend Trial Period - "Rearm"

Here's how to extend the trial period of your Windows XP. This can be helpful if you can't seem to do anything because the system that was once activated reverted to trial and expired.

1. Type this in run or in command prompt:

C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk

note: capital letter "O" after the word setup, then a small letter "o".

2. After typing, press enter.

3. Wait for a couple of minutes to make sure the process will complete. You won't see anything.

4. Restart the computer.

This process will reset XP trial, and can be done 4 times (120 days).

If your XP was expired, and you've rearmed it, then you can rearm it 2 more times with this command.

Installation of Microsoft Office 2010 Requires MSXML Version 6.10.1129.0

Solution 1:
Download and install Windows XP SP3 from here. SP3 contains MSXML, so it'll fix your problem.

Solution 2:
If you can't download and install SP3, you can manually download and install MSXML using this link.

Solution 3:
If the above solutions don't work for you, do as following:
1. Type regedit in RUN or start menu search box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.
2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{F5078F18-C551-11D3-89B9-0000F81FE221}\6.0\0\win32

3. Right-click on win32 key and select Permissions.
4. Now select your username and provide Full Control to it.
5. After that in right-side pane, change value of (Default) to following:

C:\Windows\System32\msxml6.dll

NOTE: Here C: is system drive where Windows is installed in your system. If you have installed Windows in any other drive, change C: to that drive letter.

After following any of above mentioned solutions, re-run Office 2010 setup and now it should work without any problem.

Do you get Msvcp71.dll and Msvcr71.dll missing error when running a program in Windows 7? Both are Microsoft C Runtime Library files and it seems as if Microsoft forgot to add them to Windows 7. Some programs require you to have both files for it to work successfully.

To fix this kind of problem, you need to launch a command prompt in Administrative mode and run this command:

sc config afs start= disabled

Note that there is no space after start but there is one after =

It seems that whatever this is it interferes with the Virtual Memory Manager.

Windows Update Error 80070005

The error code 80070005 usually means that you do not have enough permission to install updates.

First please confirm you have logged on an account with administrative privileges.

If the issue still occurs, lets’ try the following method to reset the permissions:

1. Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop:

2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.

3. Please select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine.

4. Click Start, in the Start Search bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.

5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window:

8. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

Note: It may take several minutes. Please be patient. When it is completed, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".

Try to install the updates again.

This issue can be also caused by third-party security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus software. You can disable or remove them to check the issue.

Restore Windows XP System Information

If for some reason your Windows XP system information will not show up, then here's how to fix it:

Remove the .cab files from the Packagestore folder, and then
rebuild the original Help and Support Center:

A. Click Start, click Run, type cmd to open a command prompt. Type the
following commands:

net stop helpsvc
cd /d C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr
rd packagestore /s /q
cd binaries
start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install

B. Run Taskmgr.exe to launch Task Manager. If any of the following

1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
2. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties".
3. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties".
4. In the Internet Protocol window, let's change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.222.222
5. Click 'OK' twice to complete the modification.

If the issue persists, please repeat the steps and change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.220.220.

If there is a router, please bypass it and connect to DSL modem directly for a test.

How to Extract Files from FAST (Files and Settings Transfer Wizard ) Store Using Windows Easy Transfer in Vista

1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Windows Easy Transfer.
2. In the Welcome to Windows Easy Transfer, click Next
3. Click Continue a transfer in progress
4. Click No, I’ve copied files and settings to a CD, DVD or other removable media
5. Click On an external hard disk or network location
6. Click Browse… to locate the F.A.S.T ( Files and Settings Transfer Wizard) data store. Note that the default* name USMT2.UNC should be used for the store folder.
7. Select Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (*.DAT) from the drop-down box. Then locate the .DAT file (IMG0000n.DAT).
8. Windows Easy Transfer detects the F.A.S.T store and offers to recover files (not settings) to a folder named OldFolder on your C drive. Click OK to continue.
9. When you see the message Transfer is Complete, you’ve now recovered the files from Files and Settings Transfer Wizard store! The files are extracted to a folder named OldFiles in the C drive.

Windows Update Service Is Not Running

Sometimes the Windows Update would fail to work because the service is not running. That's because the third party programs can affect the Windows Update service.

If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend you temporarily disable or uninstall them and then try accessing Windows Update later.

If the problem still happens, try renaming the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder. Here's how:

1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click "Start", click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".
4. In the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

5. Click "Start", in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

If you still cannot install updates, running system file checker and check if the problem is caused by the corrupted system files:

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all system files and will recover the corrupted ones.

3. Please restart the computer and recheck the original issue.

Silverlight Error 1622

Here's a fix if you are getting an error 1622 when trying to install Silverlight:

1. Boot to safe mode.
2. Login to your user account, then create a temporary admin account.
3. Boot back to normal mode and login to the new admin account.
4. Install Silverlight while you're login in that new admin account.
5. After installing Silverlight successfully, logout of that new admin account and login back to your main user account.
6. You may test silverlight using this MS Silverlight Demo page.
