Vocabulary from the Hadith:

الرِّيَاءُ – Ar-Riyaa
Linguistically, riyaa means showing, displaying something.
In the Shariah, riyaa means a good deed done with the intention that people may see it and praise the doer for the action.

Lessons from the Hadith:

“So you will see the person doing riyaa beautifying the deed in-front of people. And he does not intend obedience to Allah with this beautification of his action.

Truly, some of the most important reasons for riyaa are exhibitionism/pretentiousness, desiring position of significance and weakness of faith. Moreover, the most dangerous consequences of riyaa are deprivation of acceptance of deeds with Allah and the loss of trust/reliance between people.

Allah has certainly set two foundational conditions for the acceptance of deeds. They are:
1) The action is good, righteous action within the bounds of the Shariah and compliant with the Qur’an and Sunnah.
2) The action is done purely for the sake of Allah, far removed from every type of shirk, whether it is major shirk or minor shirk; and riyaa is a type of shirk.”

عَن أَبِي قَتَادَةَ قالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَسْوَأُ النَّاسِ سَرِقَةً الَّذِي يَسْرِقُ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ
قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَكَيْفَ يَسْرِقُ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ قَالَ لَا يُتِمُّ رُكُوعَهَا وَلَا سُجُودَهَا

أخرجه أحمد

It is narrated by Abu Qatadah [RA] that the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “The worst kind of thief is one who steals from his prayer.” The companions said, “O Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ how can someone steal from their prayers?” He صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “He does not fulfill the ruku of the prayer nor its sujood. “

اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: “مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ

يَسْتَجِيبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ عِنْدَ الشَّدَائِدِ وَالْكَرْبِ

فَلْيُكْثِرِ الدُّعَاءَ فِي الرَّخَاءِ“. أخرجه الترمذي

الصحيحة” (2 / 142)

Abu Huraira [RA] reported that Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:
“Whoever would be pleased by Allah’s answering/granting/acceptance to him/her during tough and distressing times should increase dua’a in the easy times”.

Vocabulary from the Hadith:

الشدائد is the plural of شديدة, and it means a tough, difficult situation.

الكرب is the plural of كرب, and it means depression, distress.

الرخاء means a normal, easy situation

Lessons:

- Everyone wishes that Allah answers their prayers in tough times. The way to guarantee this is by making plenty of consistent dua in easy times.

- Laziness is one thing that deters a person from making dua in easy times. For this, make the dua, “الّلهُمَّ إنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْعَجْزِ وَ الْكَسَلِ” – Oh Allah, I ask your protection from senility and laziness.

- Ramadan is one of the most blessed times to make dua in. Allah says in the middle of the ayat of fasting in Ramadan in Surah Al-Baqarah, “And when my slaves ask you about me tell them that surely I’m close: I respond to the dua of the person making dua when he/she makes dua to Me.” [2:186]

- Some times to make dua are: between the adhan and iqamah, in sujood, after salah, and before iftaar.

- “Whoever asks Allah for Jannah three times, Jannah will say: “O Allah, enter him into Jannah.”” [Tirmidhi]

And certainly We have explained in this Quran every kind of example, and man is most of all given to contention. (54)

Tasreef is to diversify and repeat. Tasreef is used for winds, because winds come from all directions and come again and again.  Allah has presented different way, styles, and every kind of example that is necessary for them so that man can understand. Allah ta’ala mentions parables, warnings, glad tidings to convey the message to mankind.

We learn from this that Allah ta’ala, out of His complete Mercy, has set forth everything we need in the Qur’an. He azza wa jal gave us many examples to explain the Deen so that we may comprehend it. In surah Kahf alone, we’ve covered more than one example of the life of this world and of the Qur’an.

Even though this is the case, Allah ta’ala says:

وَكَانَ الْإِنسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلًا and man is most of all given to contention. Jidaal is an argument in which two parties try to overcome each other. Jidaal is not an ordinary debate but it is a severe argument; none of the parties are willing to give up. If there is one thing mankind is good at, it is arguing.

Instead of understanding and taking a lesson, man argues concerning these ayaat. In surah Baqarah, the first example Allah ta’ala mentions is the mosquito and He ta’ala mentions the objection of those who hear this example, that why would Allah use a mosquito to strike a parable. The objective behind an example is to make the concept easier for understanding, and is not meant for dispute.

We can end arguments and disputes by remaining silent. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam promised a house in the middle of Jannah for the person who leaves an argument even if they are in the right.
