We are delighted here at Truly Gifted as our art gallery is open! This also means plenty of space for Crafty classes. Every class we do is suitable for beginners and is structured so everything you make can either go home with you on the day or a week later. So what and when? Read on: 

What? Jewellery making with Elmarie Elemjay Jewellery

When? on Mondays in December from 11am – 1pm.

How much? Only 30 euro per person. And that includes all materials on the day.

You’ll make at least 3 pieces of jewellery to take home,

Limited places available so early booking is advisable!! Suitable for beginners

When?6th & 13th December, both classes need attending

How much? €55  for both days all materials included

Make your own wonderful work of art in time for Christmas. No experience needed! Great fun guaranteed!!

When? Every Monday in December except Monday 10^th 2pm

Christmas Card Making Classes

Starting Friday 16th November 2pm

Learn to make beautiful Christmas cards learning new techniques. You will learn stamping,inking, embellishing and more. Once you learn to make one, you can make all your Christmas cards this year in no time.

Classes are no longer then1 hr long and you’ll make 3 cards each. There’s a range of designer papers and embellishments to choose from and it’s all included in the price. Suitable for beginners

Classes will continue each Friday until Christmas however booking is essential.

We will have a variety of art,craft & design on display. Why not start your Christmas shopping here, most of the items are one off creations by talented Irish makers. Why not find out about our workshops on the day and maybe you could make your own Christmas gifts! Upcoming workshops & Make & Take workshops include:

Items made in these workshops may need to dry etc. and would be ready for collection a week later. Also it is possible to start a project and continue it in each class. Classes are pay as you go so you can just come once and make something or just keep coming each week and learn more!

We are looking for artists who wish to display their work. Truly Gifted, Mallow ,Co Cork is offering a gallery wall space rent of €50 per calender month + 10% commission on sales.

There will be an open day Saturday 10th November to launch the gallery and the craft shop. We are also able to accommodate sculptures as well as wall hangings. Gallery space can also be rented to give workshops in.

When I started Truly Gifted I wanted a place filled with handmade treasures. An enchanted place with lots of colour and fun in every corner. What I didn’t want was a hippy shop “Ya Baby!” with incense burning. There is plenty of them about!

We opened in September last year I was terrified and excited. But I had that bad feeling that something wasn’t quiet right. We made the bills each month and for the last 2 weeks of each month I’d worry we couldn’t pay the bills but somehow we did. My own jewellery started selling well at Christmas but my profits were soon gone to the council for our rates. They didn’t care that we were creating a place for Irish artist and crafts people and in January they put up our rates by €300 extra a year. This was a huge blow to me as we are just getting by but then we get our Christmas electricity bill at lets just say it was big. This combined with our own January sale of 70% off made it a difficult February and if It wasn’t for the few workshops I was able to hold the bills wouldn’t have been paid.

Now I can hear some people saying “Majella why not run it like more like a co-op?” Well no because I have been in a few organisations that need a committee and decisions are slow and ideas are hard to achieve. This is due to too many egos and I think all co-ops and clubs are time limited and will fail eventually due to conflicting opinions on how things should be run. I have a vision for Truly Gifted and I don’t want that to get lost along the way or totally disorganised & unprofessional due to conflicts.

Why am I telling you all this? Because there is one thing I have come across that makes me so sad. People come into our shop and think we are trying to rip them off and like to tell us how we must be making a fortune out of other peoples hard work. But we don’t make anything. I am there 6 days a week 10 to 5.30 doing as much as I can to stay open because I want a place to sell my own work and the wonderful work of others as well.

There has been so much greed in this country that people find it hard to believe that we are doing this for nothing. In fact the enterprise board laughed at us and said why would you limit your profit. You need to do a markup and standard makrup is cost price x2 or 3 or 4! So take a handmade card that costs €1.50 to make will have to sell for €3 and I’d keep the profit. Thats not supporting Irish craft thats taking advantage of them. It’s taken a lot for me to wirte this blog post because I feel quiet exposed. But then again if I say nothing they no one knows why we created Truly Gifted and I want people to know WHY!!!.I’m not a business mogel just a craft’s person wanting to sell their goods

So now it is March and we are closed. It’s not what I wanted to do but it’s what I had to do for more then one reason. Firstly I am burnt out from running the shop and secondly we didnt have the money to move right away. So closing for a few months gives us a chance to breath new life into Truly Gifted and to have a well deserved rest! I am also looking for help with running the place so any volunteers are welcome. I can’t afford to pay anyone but I can show them how to fuse glass, make mosaics, paint with wax well the list goes on!! I’m only looking for someone to mind the shop so I can catch up on the accounts and make more glass goodies for the shop. Drop me a line if you think it’s something you would like to do. In the summer I’d love to open on Sundays and late on Friday evenings. I want to give more workshops myself and have a whole calender full of fun workshops to do. On top of that we will have a proper art gallery which will be above the new shop! So as you can see there is a lot of work to do. The more people we have running Truly Gifted the better because 2 heads are always better then one right?

I’m really looking forward to re-opening Truly Gifted and to meeting new people and making new friends again!!!

We will be moving to a different premises. We will be moving to a unit in Hibernian Way next next to/behind our current location. Our new premises will be redone to suit our needs. We will have a ground floor shop and upstairs gallery with further room for storage, glass studio and a dedicated workshop area.

The bad news is that as a result of this we will be closing from the 14th of March until approximatly early June. The cause of this long closure is a combination of many things. Firstly our contract for our current premises had a break clause for the 14th of March. It was move now or wait for another 6 months. Second reason is that the work being carried out on our new premises has yet to be finalised. We want to make sure the finished unit will suit our needs. When it is finalised the work will take about 3 weeks to do but no doubt a little longer. Third reason is that we had plans to go on holiday the last 3 weeks in May. We see no reason to open up the shop for a week or 2 only to close it again for 3. You have to keep in mind that keeping the shop open is pretty much a one-woman operation! Should the work be finished sooner than we may consider opening sooner. We will, of course, keep everyone informed.

The main reason for the move is that the stairs are deterring customers and we have no windows display and on street presence.  This means less sales for our talented crafts people. Moving and the resulting closure time will also give us a chance to have a fresh re-think of our current set-up and change the way we operate in order to maximise sales for everyone. We will loose our lovely high ceilings and beautiful light fixture but hope to gain a lot more.

Glass Fusing Jewellery Making

Design and make your own glass jewellery.
Date: Friday 27th January
Time: 7pm to 9pm

Price: €60 and you will make 3 pieces of jewellery, extra pieces can be made at a cost of €20 per piece. Each piece will come with findings (eg. chain,pin,earring bails etc.) and gift box ready to keep or to give as a gift. Please note they will not be ready for a week due to the lengthy fusing process

A New Year and a new start here at Truly Gifted! We are having a January Sale on our spaces, with 70% off all spaces. But also there are many items on sale as well so it s great value all around the shop.

New workshops are planned as well, including Encaustic Wax Painting, Glass Fusing & A mini scrap book workshop with the theme of 2010 to document all the good things of that year. I will post all the details of the workshops here soon.

ANIM is a partnership between Stephen Ansbro and Matt Nolan. Stephen specialises in portrait and natural scene photo’s as well as creating digital art. Hello From Truly Gifted

It’s been busy here all month and we’ve met some lovely people full of positive comments. We have had great media coverage and have been in the Corkman twice as well as the Mallow Star, Cork Independent and we put a full colour ad in the Cork Advertiser.

We will soon be starting a new month and we have some lovely new crafts on the way in. We’ve got some lovelies from Pooka Designs and beautiful crochet blankets and throws from Rose Mary O’Shea. Also some vintage inspiried goodies from Julie such as tablecloths, cushion covers, aprons and numerous other soft furnishings. Then we have very cute personalised canvases from Teddies and Trains and that’s only a little teaser of what we have in this this November!

Also we have workshops going on, the next one is this Saturday at 2pm in glass fusing , it’s €45 and you’ll make 2 lovely glass coasters. Glass fusing classes are every Saturday in November with the exception of the 5th but booking is essential. Then Sunday 13th Nov we have Lisa coming down to show us how to make a silver ring from silver clay!!! This costs €80 and you’ll leave with your own silver ring, no previous experience is require. What a lovely Christmas gift that would be for someone!

And Friday 9th December we will have our first Christmas Fayre!!! It takes place in the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow and tables cost €30 for the day. To finish up here is something to think about!!!:
