I could not help myself, but to write this post. I am really frustrated by a situation that is happening right now. To all Lake Geneva Hotels, Resorts, and Photographers, I do not know who is handling your social media, but I can say with all certainty that they are doing it wrong. Unless all Lake Geneva Hotels, Resorts, and Photographers are so booked they don’t need new business, their social media is being mismanaged and they are missing out on the best part of social media – leads that turn into sales. Keep reading the scenario below to see what exactly I am talking about.

My son and his girlfriend are attending Prom on Saturday. We are looking for a Photographer for Saturday to take Prom photos of the young couple. I have posted on my Facebook profile page, Facebook fan page, Twitter profile, and Google+ profile that I am seeking a photographer in Lake Geneva to take prom photos. It’s been about 19 hours since my posts and I have not one single photographer responding to my posts, not in social media or via email. Now, I cannot believe that all photographers in Lake Geneva are so busy that they do not need my business. When photographers are running their own business, like all business owners, they need people to service in order to get paid, so they can eat and pay the bills. So, I ask, “Where are all the Lake Geneva photographers?” and “Who is handling social media for Lake Geneva photographers?”

Lake Geneva Photographers: Whoever is handling your social media marketing should be fired. Now. My posts are public. They can be searched on Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Google+. Why is the person who is handling your social media not searching for your keywords in social media? Do you subscribe to Google alerts? If you are using social media correctly, you are using it to gain new business and close business, not just post status updates… I hope. You want to be driving traffic to your website so website visitors can close on a landing page. You want to be searching social media for leads. I think you need to go ask your social media person why they haven’t responded to my lead.

I have snagged a screenshot of my posts on social media networks Facebook, Twitter, and Google from Google+ where I am specifically asking for a Lake Geneva Photographer. See below:

Here is what comes up for keywords “Lake Geneva Photographer” on Facebook. It’s my post only, so my post is not even getting lost in a huge amount of leads for those keywords.

Keywords “Lake Geneva Photographer” on Twitter:

Hmmm, it’s my post, again. What is going on? The post is easily searchable on LinkedIn as well. You need to be searching for your keywords in social media. If you are not, you are missing the boat. Obviously, your competition isn’t doing it, either, so now’s your chance to take these leads and perform your social media right.

Now, not to be mean, but I know there are a lot of people and a lot of companies out there that just added social media to their mix of services and claim to know what they are doing. However, I can bet that 98% of them are not performing your social media right. The above scenario is some proof of that in my local community, Lake Geneva. Social media does not just have to do with posting status updates and creating a nice-looking profile. Social media has a lot to do with SEO as well. Your main goal is not just to “out-do” your competition with the amount of friends or followers you have. Social media companies should NEVER be asking you how many posts you want on Facebook or Twitter when quoting you a campaign price. Social media has to do with swimming where your fishes are (in social media) and finding leads. You should be using keywords in your posts and profiles, driving traffic back to landing pages, expanding your reach, growing your community, and searching for leads. This is standard practice in our office.

We are also speaking first-hand when it comes to some other agencies offering social media and not performing it right. I really don’t want to sound too derogatory, but we have been approached many, many times by website companies and graphic design companies looking to partner with an agency to fulfill their client’s social media needs. We have even gone so far as to write proposals for their clients. 99% of the time, the agency takes our proposal and hires an intern or a new person to perform social media and keeps our proposal with no feedback. Next thing you know, they are blogging about social media, teaching classes on social media, and more. It’s very frustrating knowing that people are paying to attend classes being taught by an agency that two months ago had no idea how to perform social media and approached us to help them. This happens all the time, and I mean all the time.

I just want to warn other business owners out there to be very careful about who is performing their social media and to not be fooled by agencies teaching you the basics. We here at Trust eMedia have even seen our blog posts “stolen”. Because I care about people and sincerely want to help them, which is why I started our social media agency in the first place, I feel it is very important to warn you about what is happening in the social media business-world. We would suggest you think twice, or even three times, about hiring an agency to perform your social media whose main core business is not social media marketing. Any agency that has added social media to its services would raise a red flag to me as to how in-depth their social media knowledge truly is. Now, there are probably some agencies that have a very good social media director on staff and can perform social media right, but please, for the sake of your business’s future, pry into their social media knowledge.

Off the rant, and back to the facts at hand:

The same scenario described above happened with the keywords “Lake Geneva Meeting Space”. Most hotels and resorts have meeting space they are always seeking to rent, this includes hotel and resorts in Lake Geneva. Lake Geneva Hotels and Resorts, I ask you, “Who on earth is handling your social media marketing?” It is early May, so summer here in Lake Geneva has not hit yet and I am sure Lake Geneva hotels and resorts and desperately seeking to fill not only rooms, but meeting space as well.

I ask Lake Geneva Hotels and Resorts another question, “Why are you not responding to my post requesting meeting space in Lake Geneva when you have meeting space you need to fill?” This is a question you need to be asking yourself and your social media agency or director. Either you need to teach your social media director how to perform social media right – meaning, searching for leads on social media networks, not just posting to Facebook every day, or you need to fire your social media agency right now. I may be sounding harsh, but if you are paying a good sum of money to a social media agency to handle your Lake Geneva hotel or resort social media and they are not presenting you with leads from social media or responding to leads from social media, then they are not performing social media right. You can bet this is not the only thing they are doing wrong. You’ve been hoodwinked. If they knew what they were doing, then I would have a quote on meeting space in Lake Geneva from your hotel or resort in my hands right now. I do not.

Here’s how easy it is to find my request for meeting space in Lake Geneva:

Keywords “Lake Geneva meeting space” on Facebook:

We are the only post with these keywords. If you have meeting space available for rent in Lake Geneva and you did not see this post or were unaware of this post, you have a big problem.

Keywords “Lake Geneva meeting space” on Google with personalized results turned on:

Keywords “Lake Geneva meeting space” on Google+:

Keywords “Lake Geneva meeting space” on Twitter:

Keywords “Lake Geneva meetings space” on LinkedIn:

I would think someone is playing a cruel joke on me that not one photographer and not one hotel or resort in Lake Geneva has contacted me about prom photos or meeting space.

Where are all the REAL social media experts, agencies, directors…? Why are you paying for service from an employee or agency that cannot locate a simple lead based upon your keywords in social media? I just find no excuse for this poor service. I am sorry to have to provide this type of post on my blog, I truly do care about businesses and I am in my business to help others and watch them succeed. I could not sit by and watch anyone in my local community get ripped off. It would not be right of me to not warn any business owner about what is going on. I am sure this does not only happen here in Lake Geneva. I am sure it happens all over the country.

We work really hard here at Trust eMedia to perform social media correctly for our clients in a way that increases their revenue. We have been studying social media for over eight years and absorbing at lot of information. As you may know, there is a lot to keep up with when it comes to social media changes and strategies. We feel it was our duty to write this post. We don’t feel that website gurus and graphic design artists can become social media experts overnight, and we are 100% positive they can fool anyone who is unknowing. We apologize if this post has struck a nerve with anyone. We do realize there are exceptions. As stated above, we are just looking out for your best interest.

As the saying goes “Home is Where the Heart Is” and your home page is the heart of your business. It is the page website visitors will land on most. Your home page is the home base and center of all other marketing you perform on behalf of your business. Each time you list your domain URL in a marketing campaign, it is your home page you are advertising. A good home page can make for a new lead, while a bad home page can make for a high bounce rate.

Below are best practices to keep in mind when designing or re-designing your home page.

1. Make Good Use of Your Main Keywords

The home page of your website will by no doubt have the most inbound links pointing to it than any other page of your website. Be sure to make good use of your main keywords on your home page and monitor the anchor text directing to it.

2. Keep it Short, but to the Point

Web visitors want to know who you are, what you do, and what they should do next. Be sure to keep your home page short, but also to the point. No one wants to read eight paragraphs of boring text while scrolling miles down your home page. Be alert of how long your home page is in comparison to your scrollbar. Be brief. Also, provide your website visitors with links to easily navigate through your website, finding the information they need quickly.

3. Call to Action

You can have the most innovative and optimized home page on the planet, but it may not mean much if you aren’t telling your users what to do. Be sure to have a clear call to action on your home page. In fact, you should have a clear call to action on each page of your website. You never know which page a website visitor will land on. Create a few different calls to action on your home page, such as: contact form, newsletter subscription, and content download.

4. Social Media Connections

People consume content in different ways. Besides your newsletter, social media is another way for website visitors to consume your content. Place social media icons and boxes on your home page in an effort to connect with your website visitors off of your corporate website. This can strengthen connections where your company is more personable. Just remember to remain active on your social networks. No one wants to connect with your Facebook page when the last post was over a month ago. Other connections to add: Google +1 button and RSS Feed Icon.

5. Keep It Current

There is nothing more unflattering than seeing outdated information on a website. When a promotion is over, take it down. As an end user, when I come across a website that contains outdated content, I draw a quick conclusion that the company is not taking care of their marketing, and possibly even their company. I know if I try to contact that company, there is a good possibility that no one will even receive or read my e-mail. Are they even in business anymore? Make sure your content is current.

6. Ease of Use

Make sure your website visitors can easily find the information they are seeking. You should have a clean layout and a logical navigation menu. You don’t want your website visitors getting discouraged and leaving your website because they are lost and cannot find the information they seek.

7. Attention Grabbing

You have only a few seconds to capture the attention of your website visitors. Keep your website in-line with corporate branding, using the company colors and being consistent with your logo. Add video. Add some photos. Add interaction, such as polls. Have fun with it! You can be fun, trendy, innovative, and a good marketer all at the same time. Experiment with what grabs the most interaction from your visitors.

What are some best practices you are currently using on your website’s home page?

Google+ has rolled out a lot of new changes lately. We took some time to highlight some of the changes for you.

1. New look. If you haven’t logged onto your Google+ profile for a while, now may be the time to do so. Google+ has rolled out a whole new look to your profile pages, which includes some nice new features. Below is a screenshot of what the new Google+ profile looks like.

2. Google+ profile image. Your profile photo was moved to the right side and is also now larger. You might was to take a peek at yours to make sure it didn’t become blurry or pixelated when the larger size rolled out. Your profile images have changed as well. You can now keep your five separate profile images or you can create a new seamless profile image. Here’s how to change your profile image:

Click “Edit Profile”

Click on the template you prefer:

The best news: Unlike Facebook, you can promote whatever you want here!!! So, promote away! We love you Google+ for allowing us to use Call to Actions!

3. You will now notice four tabs across the top of your Google+ home page navigation. These are your Google+ Circles. The first is “All”, meaning all circles. The next two tabs are the two circles you have appearing first in your Circles list. The last tab is “More” which displays a dropdown menu of your other Circles. You can display your most important Circles visibly in the second and third tabs by simply rearranging the order of your circles. To do this, click on “Circles” in the left navigation sidebar menu and then drag and drop Circles in the order you wish.

4. In the above photo, note the “Pages You Might Like” section on the right of the home page newsfeed. I would say this is a good reason to start growing your Google+ connections.

5. Also, in the above photo, you will see a “Trending on Google+” section. This looks similar to what you see on Twitter’s home page displaying Worldwide Trends.

6. Photos and Videos are now larger.

7. Easily import your YouTube videos into your posts. You will notice, you have a new YouTube tab in the back top navigation menu. Here you can easily move between your Google+ profile and your YouTube page. If you want to place a YouTube video in a post, simply click the video icon and then choose YouTube from the drop down menu:

From there, you can search for a YouTube video or import one of your own YouTube videos directly from your YouTube channel.

8. Quickly see who is sharing posts by clicking the drop menu in the lower right corner of posts. Just click the sharing arrow icon or the + icon to see who is sharing your posts. Once clicked, a drop down menu appears with your posts sharing information. See below:

9. The admin panel for switching between your profile and page has been moved. You can now access this feature from your profile image on the upper right-hand side of your page. You can also access your page by clicking the Pages icon on the left-hand sidebar ribbon.

10. Google+ rolled out a new Share button, in addition to the +1 button. Google says, “Add this button to content across your site to make sharing on Google+ easy. This button is perfect for content that users may want to share but not +1 (e.g. news or controversial content).” You can get the new Google+ share button here: https://developers.google.com/+/plugins/share

Once again, Facebook is making us all scramble by changing things, again. Business owners and marketers are hoping these changes will be for the better.

Below is an overview of some of the new Facebook changes taking place.

1. Cover Photo

One of the bigger Facebook changes is the new cover photos. Most of us have the new Timeline profile already and hear the rumors that Facebook would bring Timeline to businesses, so this change isn’t a big surprise. When I snag the image on a Facebook page Timeline screen, I get dimensions of 851px x 314px. However, Facebook states that a cover image must be at least 399px wide.

This change should be for the better, right? Businesses would now have a more visual approach to showcasing their promotions, products, and services on their Facebook page. Just when we thought we could take advantage of all this extra space, Facebook slaps us in the face with this:

“Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not contain:

- Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”

- Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section

– References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features

- Calls to action, such as ‘Get it now’ or ‘Tell your friends’”

Well, there goes that right out the window. Businesses are going to have to get very creative to make this work.

It’s also important to mention that your profile image is much smaller now and located on the left bottom of the cover photo. The size has been reduced to 180px x 180px.

2. Goodbye Default Landing Tab

I feel like my rights have been taken away. You can no longer decide what tab a Facebook visitor lands on when visiting your Facebook page for the first time. Now, you are restricted to using Applications. If you created a custom welcome tab using an application, the tab is still there.

As a Facebook page owner, you have 12 applications you can choose from to showcase on your page. However, you only have 3 spaces on your top row next to your photos, so only the top 3 applications you move to the top row of your Facebook page will have a notable appearance. (See Macy’s pic above).

The good news is that you can change the photo that appears on the screen for the app you choose to showcase on your page. You can also rename the app, providing a call to action on your page. (See the Macy’s pic below to see how Macy’s customized their apps.)

3. Featured Posts

You can now feature your posts on your Facebook Page Timeline, just as you have been on your profile. Just click the star icon on the upper right and the post will become larger. See sample below.

Featured posts are good news for marketers as now we can expand and place more emphasis on posts that are more important to our business.

You can also feature posts by pinning them to the top of your Timeline for up to a week. Click the pencil icon on the upper right and then select “Pin to Top”.

“Pin to Top” is an awesome tool for marketers. Although we cannot use any Call to Actions in our Cover Photo, we can at least pin a promotional post to the top of our Facebook Page Timeline. It’s not the same, but it will provide some control over our Facebook marketing.

4. Milestones

You can place major events and milestones that have occurred in your company on your Timeline. You can do this by clicking the line running down the middle of your Timeline and selecting “Milestone”. One important aspect of milestones is that they are separated from posts. This helps put more emphasis on your brand in key areas. Marketers again have an opportunity to be creative with their Timelines. Can you engage your fans on your Timeline and not just in the post area? Will fans come to your Facebook page to read your Timeline? Or will fans become “Facebook Trained” and learn to not look at those spots on your page, just as people have learned to ignore PPC ads on Google (on the top and to the right)?

5. New Administration Location

There is an Admin Panel in the upper right corner of your Facebook Page Timeline. You will find everything you needed before and will need in the future in this location. You can access your Facebook Insights from this location. You can also invite people to like your page, create an ad, and more from the Build Audience feature located inside Admin.

6. Competitor Information

With the new Facebook Page Timeline release, you now have information about your competitors’ Facebook Pages at your fingertips. If you click on a competitor’s Timeline Page Likes Box, you will see their People Talking About This statistics, their best week, and their most popular age group.

7. Offers

Right now, only a few companies are able to use the new Offers features on Facebook. Facebook does say, “We’re working on expanding the number of Pages eligible to post offers and expect to make offers available more broadly soon.” Here’s what Facebook has to say about Offers:

“Certain businesses, brands and organizations can share discounts with their customers by posting an offer on their Facebook Page. Offers are like coupons and don’t cost anything to create. When someone claims an offer, they’ll receive an email that they can show at the Page’s physical location to get the discount.

To create an offer:

Go to your Page

From the sharing tool at the top of your Page’s timeline, click Offer

Type a strong headline for your offer, ex. “Get 10% off when you spend $50 or more”

Set an expiry date using the small calendar icon in the bottom left

Upload a small photo for your offer

Click Next

Describe the terms and conditions of your offer

Click Post

Only admins of some Facebook Pages are currently eligible to create offers.

You can see how many people have claimed your offer below the offer’s headline and expiry date:

To keep track of how many people have redeemed the offer at your business, set up a special sale code in your point-of-sale software or train your employees to keep a tally of redemptions at the register.”

We’re going off-base a bit this week and writing a blog article that toots our own horn. We don’t write blog posts about ourselves very often. However, we have done some good lately and would love to share our accomplishments with you. We can raise our glasses and cheers together as good friends often do. We’d also like to take this time to thank all of our readers and supporters. We couldn’t accomplish any of this without you. So, hat’s off to you, our readers and let’s toast to you as well!

1. Social Media Examiner’s Top Ten Social Media Blogs of 2012

First of all, thank you to everyone who nominated us for this award. We never thought in a billion years we would receive a nomination, yet we received several. Thank you!! To top it off, we made the finalists!! There were 570 nominations for Top 10 Social Media Blogs of 2012 and we made the Top 20 Social Media Blogs of 2012 Finalists list. Wow. We were super excited, to say the least. We didn’t make the final 10 list, but we still made the top 20 out of 570 nominations, so we are extremely thrilled. One aspect of the judging was frequency of posts. We had a surgery on the team during the judging period and our posts did slow down. Was it a driving factor? We aren’t sure, but that’s okay. We accomplished much and it feels great to be loved. Thank you, again, to all of our readers, fans, and supporters!

2. WE Magazine’s 2012 Top 100 Women in Ecommerce

Tracy Terry has been named a Top 100 Women in Ecommerce by WE Magazine! The list consists of women who are considered role models in their industry. There are 100 Women in Ecommerce™ listed who represent their industries and professions who all successfully promote their products and services on the Internet. WE Magazine stated that this year’s list was one the hardest lists they EVER had to put together. You can read the winner’s stories in the latest edition of WE Magazine for Women (along with some great articles on doing business on the WEB). Join us in congratulating Tracy on a job well done!
