Should We Only Preach Behind Pulpits?

The Louie Giglio controversy has moved me to resurrect this blog from the dead. I read this morning that Giglio decided to pull the plug on his participation in the inauguration of President Obama. In his letter to the President he wrote,

Due to a message of mine that has surfaced from 15-20 years ago, it is likely that my participation, and the prayer I would offer, will be dwarfed by those seeking to make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration. Clearly, speaking on this issue (homosexuality) has not been in the range of my priorities in the past fifteen years. Instead, my aim has been to call people to ultimate significance as we make much of Jesus Christ.

So, he opts out. He succumbs to the demands of the enemy and chooses to not stand firm (Eph 6:13-14ff). He would rather return to his Sunday pulpit to continue his church ministry than engage in a battle for the truth. Thus, he misses out on a huge opportunity to proclaim the truths of Christ. And for what, to be popular? To be liked?

Giglio chose to do what most pastors are comfortable doing each week. Simply preaching a message behind a pulpit--a rather safe place. The schedule is controlled, the time slot for the message is all planned out, and mostly those who already accept the Scriptures as true are there to listen.

But should we pastors only preach behind pulpits?

Let's consider the New Testament. Did not Paul and the apostles take the message of Christ to the synagogues, places of public gathering? Did they not take the message to the people and engage them in preaching truth on the streets? Did not Paul in his travels throughout Macedonia and Achaia preach in the agora (marketplace/town square). They were surrounded by shrines, temples and monuments to false gods, yet stood before them and reasoned with people from the Scriptures.

Why didn't Giglio embrace this opportunity? The media dominates the conversation today and fills it with their secular, godless agenda. Why aren't pastors like Giglio willing to engage the world with the truth on their territory? Why cower behind your comfortable Sunday pulpit? And in his case choose not to preach on something controversial for 15-20 years. What a tragedy. That is grounds for disqualification (Titus 1:9).

I personally believe that a minority of people in churches today are evangelizing the lost. And often a minority of pastors are engaging the world outside of their churches with the truth. This isn't what we see modeled in Scripture.

Why aren't we going to town-hall meetings and proclaiming truth? Why aren't we engaging the world on their territory with the message of Jesus Christ? Over 333,000 children were murdered/aborted last year. Can we simply just be comfortable preaching behind our pulpits? May we look for opportunities to enter public discourse where we can proclaim the truths of Christ. How can the church advance truth in the world when for the most part the only people hearing it are those in the pews who agree with us already?

What can we do to preach outside of our pulpits to a world on the fast track to perdition?

Passed Oral Defense

I haven't posted in a long time. Part is due to the fact I've been working to finish my D.Min in expository preaching. Yesterday I passed my oral defense and now I'm on to finishing the final edits and submit my final draft in a few weeks. Once that happens hopefully I can start to posts some things a little more frequently.

Here's a quote of Spurgeon speaking on the priority of God's Word in our lives.

"How instructive to us is this great truth that the Incarnate Word lived on the Inspired Word! It was food to him, as it is to us; and, brothers and sisters, if Christ thus lived upon the Word of God, should not you and I do the same? He, in some respects, did not need this Book as much as we do. The Spirit of God rested upon him without measure, yet he loved the Scripture, and he went to it, and studied it, and used its expressions continually. Oh, that you and I might get into the very heart of the Word of God, and get that Word into ourselves! As I have seen the silkworm eat into the leaf, and consume it, so ought we to do with the Word of the Lord; -- not crawl over its surface, but eat right into it till we have taken it into our inmost parts. Chasing Away Christmas

Chase Bank forced a branch to remove a Christmas tree from its lobby. They said the tree was offensive to some customers.

Well, my wife wanted me to open a couple accounts with them since some relatives have an account there. But after being offended by their anti-Christmas/Christmas tree policy I have decided to open our accounts elsewhere.

Southern Gospel Music

My postings will pick up again after my dissertation is finished, but I am compelled to comment tonight.

I was just flipping through the channel guide on the TV and saw "Gospel Music" as a program on one of the channels. So, I turned it on! However, I was quickly turned off by what I saw!

I grew up listening to Southern Gospel Music and I love it! I'll never forget the Kingsman Concert in the Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, VA back in 1995/1996. It was absolutely fantastic. In fact it wasn't really a concert. It was more of a worship service. I remember leaving there feeling as though I was leaving a worship service at church. The singers seemed genuine and I don't remember them trying to put on a show.

However, what I saw tonight was disgusting to me. One of the singers was one of my favorite singers from the Cathedrals years ago. He has now formed a new group of his own and they were on there giving a tribute to the Cathedrals of old. But it was appalling. After watching for about 2 minutes I thought, "What a bunch of clowns!"

These guys were dancing around, making goofy faces, seeking to be in some way comical, and etc. This is contrary to the words they were singing. The song they were singing could have been worshipful, but their behavior turned it into a show. The focus was taken off of Christ and put on them and their acting. How disgraceful!

Sadly the audience was in standing ovation and clapping their hands. I don't believe this is what we'll see in heaven. The focus will be on Christ and no one will be parading on stage to make people laugh and tickle their ears.

Preacher - A Man of God

This was taken from a message John MacArthur gave at what I believe was a graduation. This speaks of the work of a pastor in becoming a man of God.

Fling him into his office. Tear the office sign from the door. Nail on the sign, "Study." Take him off the mailing list. Lock him up with his books and his typewriter and his Bible. Slam him down on his knees before texts and broken hearts, and the flick of lives and a superficial flock and before a holy God. Force him to be the one man in our surfeited communities who knows about God. Throw him into the ring to box with God until he learns how short his arms are. Engage him to wrestle with God all the night through, and let him come out only when he's bruised and beaten into being a blessing.

Shut his mouth forever spouting remarks, and stop his tongue forever tripping lightly over every nonessential. Require him to have something to say before he dares break the silence, and bend his knees in the lonesome valley. Burn his eyes with weary study. Wreck his emotional poise with worry for God. And make him exchange his pious stance for a humble walk with God and man. Make him spend and be spent for the glory of God. Rip out his telephone. Burn up his ecclesiastical success sheets. Put water in his gas tank. Give him a Bible and tie him to the pulpit and make him preach the Word of the living God.

Test him. Quiz him. Examine him. Humiliate him for his ignorance of things divine. Shame him for his good comprehension of finances, batting averages, and political in-fighting. Laugh at his frustrated effort to play psychiatrist. Form a choir and raise a chant and haunt him with it night and day, "Sir, we would see Jesus."

When at long last he dares assay the pulpit, ask him if he has a word from God. If he does not, then dismiss him. Tell him you can read the morning paper and digest the television commentaries, and think through the day's superficial problems, and manage the community's weary drives, and bless the sordid baked potatoes and green beans better than he can.

Command him not to come back until he's read and reread, written and rewritten, until he can stand up, worn and forlorn, and say, "Thus saith the Lord."

Break him across the board of his ill-gotten popularity. Smack him hard with his own prestige. Corner him with questions about God. Cover him with demands for celestial wisdom, and give him no escape until he's back against the wall of the word. And sit down before him and listen to the only word he has left, God's word. Let him be totally ignorant of the down-street gossip, but give him a chapter and order him to walk around it, camp on it, sup with it, and come at last to speak it backward and forward, until all he says about it rings with the truth of eternity.

And when he's burned out by the flaming word, when he's consumed at last by the fiery grace blazing through him, and when he's privileged to translate the truth of God to man, and finally transferred from earth to heaven, then bear him away gently and blow a muted trumpet and lay him down softly. Place a two-edged sword on his coffin and raise the tomb triumphant. For he was a brave soldier of the word and ere he died; he had become a man of God.

I don't have many sermons recorded in English and don't know of many posted on the web, but I thought I would point you to one I recently did at The Master's Seminary chapel - "Preaching Christ."

Wholly Laughter or Wholly Depraved?

The McClure United Church in Edmonton, Canada, made headlines because the pastor and some other folks decided to dress up like clowns and have a "worship service." The pastor, Jim Lochhead" said, "So often in our lives we live behind masks that are not immediately apparent...I think putting the makeup on in some way allows us to bring out a side of ourselves that we don't let out at other times."

He speaks as though the whole chicanery is a positive expression of worship. If this is so positive and worshipful, then why do they not do it more often? Is this a model that churches should duplicate around the globe, because it "allows us to bring out a side of ourselves that we don't let out at other times?" Is this a side of ourselves that lifts up the name of Christ, gives glory to God, and attributes to God all that He is worthy of?

Lochhead must be insane. This is mockery of all that worship is to entail. It is devoid of truth and Satanically driven. The attention is taken off of Christ and placed on a clown all for the price of a laugh.

A Nation Without Truth

Today is the first day without travel or activities for me for the last couple months. It is also the first day I've been able to really focus on my dissertation. I'm sitting here perplexed praying and asking the Lord how to proceed forward.

My project proposal was accepted by the seminary, but rejected by the Czechs. It was to be a book focused on preaching the truth. But all my Czech friends tell me that a book having to do with truth is of no interest to Czechs. Interesting since that was how the Czech reformation began many moons ago. Preaching truth. Now, it's no longer in vogue. Sad.

So, how to approach this project/book and what to do? Praying.

What is the Truth about Ergun Caner?

Ergun Caner, who I call "Erogunt" Caner is being questioned for lying about his Islamic background. He is the dean of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. He has made many contradictory statements about his background, which he used to promote himself and sell books. The evidence is rather overwhelming that he has exaggerated his background for personal gain.

What is sad about the whole ordeal is that Liberty University (of which I'm an alumni) did not want to open an investigation to the contradicting statements Caner made until it hit the national media. Dr. Elmer Towns tried to brush it aside by saying that Caner's contradictory statements "were not an ethical or moral issue." Interesting since in the Bible lying is a moral and ethical issue. But the news became too big for them to squash. And so in response they decided to launch an inquiry.

It seems that Liberty University is drifting farther and farther away from the truth. Mormon Glenn Beck was their speaker at graduation this year as they seek to place more importance on social issues than on the gospel itself. And now Caner, in spite of his habitual lying, is being slapped on the wrist by not having his contract extended as the dean of the seminary while at the same time being allowed to remain as a professor at the school. Truth is not in vogue at Liberty these days.

A sad day I never thought I would see come so quickly.
