In its two-thousand-year history, the Catholic Church remains an unchanging yet developing entity. Since the church’s infancy, Catholic theologians have referenced the “deposit of faith,” which in early years referred to the written or orally revealed doctrines that formed the backbone of church teaching.

Through the centuries, the definition came to be understood as the word of God, delivered through Jesus Christ and passed on to his apostles. Still, the deposit included both oral and written traditions and provided moral direction.

The Second Vatican Council brought about many changes in the church, and once again, bishops and theologians addressed the deposit of faith. This invaluable concept came to be seen, not as mere dogma, but the expression of faith embodied in the words and deeds of Christ. The deposit is relevant to all elements of Catholic life: prayer, sacraments, and moral living. While the deposit has always addressed divine revelation, the post-Vatican II definition directs the faithful to think holistically.

Thinking for oneself is exalted in the 21st century as it should be. Humans are made in the image and likeness of God and therefore should be thinking individuals. Unfortunately, this freedom of thought is often separated from an objective standard of truth. Truth is not created in the human mind but received in the mind as a gift from Truth, which is actually a Divine Person! Many Christians think they can pick and choose what they will believe, and this is done in the name of independent thought. Can we think for ourselves and submit to everything that Jesus teaches? Every human person is made for having direct access to the truth. Even before we learn to talk, we intuit reality, and this intuition never leaves us. Formal education is supposed to help our discursive reasoning that we might be able to articulate, in various means, what we "see" or intuit. Education in the 21st century must go beyond merely handing out information but I believe it must not be reduced to only facilitating. Teachers must have a vision of their subject matter, written on their hearts, and be willing to encourage students to look for themselves to see if they can see also!

One of the most misunderstood teachings of the Church is about the Pope. About eight years ago, I can remember working as an accountant in my cubicle and being challenged by a co-worker. Ave Maria Radio was on and some speaker mentioned the "Holy Father." My co-worker paused her work to comment on how she did not appreciate some man being called "Holy Father" when there is only one Holy Father, God the Father. I proceeded to try to explain to her the significance of the Pope and his title of "Holy Father." This vodcast gives a biblical explanation of the papacy. St. Peter, pray for us. St. John Paul the Great pray for us!

At Christmas time as a theology instructor, I always get the question about the dating of Jesus' birth. This vodcast will deal with the year of Jesus' birth. Christ's identity will also be explored given that the dogma of the Incarnation is central to Christmas. Who Jesus is and what He is has been revealed in the deposit of faith, and as Christians we should be able to clearly understand and articulate it. At times unknowingly, Christians find themselves professing various heresies around the identity of Jesus. This vodcast will take time to discuss one particular heresy that needs to be identified and avoided, that the vision of Jesus' identity may be crystal clear.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a truth revealed by God and defined by His Mystical Body, the Church. Often times, the Virginal Conception of Jesus gets labeled as the Immaculate Conception. The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary being conceived without any stain from Original Sin. Mary also remained sinless for the rest of her life! This teaching is often contested by non-Catholic Christians. Can this teaching be rooted in the Sacred Scripture? Do Catholics overstep their bounds when it comes to the Immaculate Conception? The Immaculate Conception has so much to teach the People of God about who Christ is and the instrumental role Mary plays in everyone's salvation. Have you ever been asked the question, “Are you born again?” Being born again is essential to being a Christian, but the phrase must be properly understood. Many Christians label being “born again” as an adult experience where a personal decision has been made for Christ. That personal decision is a must in any Christian’s life, but unfortunately that decision alone gets labeled “being born again.” “Being born again” or “from above” is scriptural language, yet many people are surprised at what the Bible actually identifies as being “born again.” The Church Fathers believed in the necessity of being born again and all of them had a particular idea of what being born again entailed. Jesus Christ is the most influential and dominant person in world history. People often forget that Jesus was also a very controversial figure. The controversy came from a true understanding of his claims. Jesus claimed to be God! Today in the 21st century, Jesus is presented as a person that everyone loves even if they do not believe He is God. Somehow, people have to get back in touch with who Jesus claimed to be. When this claim is honestly dealt with, Jesus simply cannot be a nice person that some people choose to worship and others simply respect. There is no middle ground with Jesus! This vodcast takes time to discuss the classic C.S. Lewis phrase: Lunatic, Liar, or Lord. Jesus has to either be Lord or some crazy, deceitful man. Reading the Bible like the Early Christians

As Christians, we sometimes focus all of our attention on the New Testament given that Christ is explicitly revealed there. This one-sided approach to the Sacred Scripture does us a great disservice. St. Augustine, a north African Church Father, informs us that the New Testament is hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is revealed in the New. All of the written word of God testifies to the Word of God, Christ Jesus. This vodcast will cover typology which is an excellent way of keeping the Old and New Testaments united when interpreting the Bible. Specifically, Isaac ,as a “type” of Christ, will be explored. Understanding the Bible

One of the greatest and most unique elements of the deposit of faith is Sacred Scripture. It is the voice of God through human words. Sacred Scripture is the soul of theology, and to ignore it is to ignore Christ: "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ" -St. Jerome. This vodcast takes the time to lay down some foundational principles that should always be kept in mind when reading the Bible. Sacred Scripture is nothing less than God's love letter written to us and it would be a tragedy to let this great gift sit on the shelf labeled, "I will get to it one day." Let's make sure we don't "Blow off what is God breathed." Yes, we know that it isn't the only way we infallibly hear from God, but if we let that stop us from penetrating its unique characteristic of inspiration, then we are ones that lose. Prepare yourselves! I've packed about a two hour presentation into twenty-two minutes! To help ease the load, I've provided some background music during the presentation. Truth is Personal (literally!)

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI spoke of this current Western culture as "dictatorship of relativism". When everything is reduced to an opinion or preference, our diginity as human beings is effectively lowered. As humans, we crave the truth and nothing else will satisfy. Every human person is made in the image of God destined to receive the Truth. We do not create the truth through our belief. Our belief receives that which already true or false. The whole “I’m okay you’re okay” culture has eroded the foundation of objective truth. There is an answer to this culture of darkness and confusion. This answer is not just a clever proposition but a Person!
