As Christians, we have a lot to be thankful for, including God's goodness and mercy and His sovereignty over all things in our lives. Mostly, we can be thankful that God sent His Son Jesus to pay the price for our sins so that we can live eternally with God in heaven someday. Now that is awesome! But how much do we think about heaven? Perhaps we don't give enough thought to it. I know that sometimes I neglect to consider how much I really do have, choosing instead to focus on what I don't.

Keeping our eyes on the prize of heaven can keep us going through the tough times. Today I'm going to share a Top Ten list from my pastor's sermon last Sunday. From Pastor Jason St. John, here's the list.

Top 10 Reasons Heaven Will Be Awesome

10. A new body. (2 Corinthians 5:1-5)

9. Awesome food. (Mt 8:11, Re 19:9)

8. Meeting the great characters of history.

7. The reunions. (1 The 4:13, 16-17)

6. No more sin. (Re 21:27)

5. The never-ending adventure.

4. New Heaven, New Earth, New Jerusalem. (Rev 21:1-5, 10-11)

3. The "No Mores". (Re 7:16-17, Is 65:17-18)

2. Awesome Worship. (Re 5:11-14, Re 7:9-10)

1. Seeing God. (1 Jo 3:2, John 14:3)

Take some time today and look these verses up in your bible. Heaven will be awesome. God promises it will be so. We all have something to be thankful for.

Therefore, I’d like to post some thoughts from Focus on the Family’s social issues page. I encourage you to look around at their site. They have done a thorough job reminding us to be sensitive and respectful to everyone. In response to an email asking, “What should be the attitude of Christians toward those who are gay?” Focus answered:

That is a very important question considering the related turmoil going on around us. I feel strongly that Christians have a scriptural mandate to love and care for all the people of the world.

Everyone is entitled to be treated with respect and dignity, even those who are living in immoral circumstances. There is no place for hatred, hurtful jokes, or other forms of rejection toward those who are homosexual. We cannot hope to win others to Jesus Christ if we insult and wound them.

Remember, too, that Jesus was more compassionate toward the adulterous woman caught in the very act of intercourse — a capital offense in those days — than He was to hypocrites in the church. That is our model for how to respond to a person living in sin. Indeed, we should be trying to reach out to those who don't know Jesus Christ, which is impossible in an atmosphere of hostility and fear.

Also, it should be remembered that there are celibate homosexuals who are trying desperately to live godly lives. Many of them struggle every day to do what is right, fighting inner battles that rage like wildfires. These men and women need every ounce of compassion and support they can get from Christian people who know of their tendencies. Often, however, they are rejected and excluded from the church community because of fear and misunderstanding by those who find them repulsive. This is wrong! These individuals need the community of Christ and the fellowship it can provide. They must be embraced as fellow believers who are trying to please the Lord and conform to a standard of moral purity. How can we do less?

For more information on responding to homosexuality in our culture, please visit Focus on the Family.

God does promise prosperity or abundance to believers, but not in the way we often think of it. While we commonly think of abundance as happiness or material gains, God promises us a future in heaven as adopted children of God. He also promises to enable us to be the men and women He wants us to be here on earth through the power of His Holy Spirit. God’s promised blessings to us this side of eternity are spiritual & character blessings, not physical blessings (Eph 1:3-6), so that we can be holy and without blame before Him.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Gal 5:22 NKJV)

These are definitely spiritual blessings, all of which pertain to character, nothing more. Godly character is highly valued by God because God looks at the heart of man, not his or her exterior. We will have success God’s way when we allow God to make us into the people He wants us to be so that we can do for Him what He wants us to do. The fullness of our prosperity, God’s way, will come when we get to heaven, not here on earth, but it will definitely be worth the wait! While we are waiting, let’s just keep pressing on, pressing into God, and allowing Him to change us from the inside out as He so desires.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Rom 1: 18

With the exception of birth and death, all of life is a choice. With every action (or inaction) we cast our vote as to how our lives will turn out. Each day is “election day”. Each new day provides fresh opportunities to either go deeper in our relationship with God, living for Him, or to stay stagnant in our faith, living for ourselves.

God delights in us getting to know Him. He commands us to live all of our lives for Him. When we do, we will be blessed. The bible says

What is he really worth?” In light of the troubling times all around us, this is a timely reminder. I don’t know about you, but it is easier for me to trust in what I can see, touch and hear. Things like my bank statement, dollar bills in my pocket and the evening news tend to take center stage of my thinking if I’m not careful. These are things of man, what are they really worth? God wants us to trust in him.

Everyone is an arm-chair economist these days. Because of the teetering world economy, the upcoming presidential election has nervous investors all over the world trying to figure out what went wrong and who to blame for the most recent stock market meltdown. I feel sorry for Alan Greenspan, who is the latest victim of the blame game.

I think we need to go deeper than Wall Street greed to evaluate what went wrong. Sure, greedy mortgage lenders gave out funds to high-risk borrowers who coveted homes that perhaps they couldn’t afford. Credit card companies, probably the next big “chip” to fall in this economic crisis also profited from lending to people living beyond their means. Most of society is guilty of greed and covetousness because most of us want more than we currently have. Even <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Main Street</st1:address></st1:street> is guilty of greed.

The real blame for our economic woes resides in society’s departure from a biblical worldview of money and wealth. As a collective whole, we have put our trust in material possessions rather than in the living God. The bible says the following about the place of money and wealth in our lives:

Our real treasure is in heaven, not in material possessions. (Mt 6:19-21)

Our security rests in God, not in our earthly riches. (1 Ti 6:17)

Our contentment should rest in what God has given us, not what others possess. (He 13:5)

Where do you place your trust or contentment? What provides you the most satisfaction? If your answer to any of these consists of something other than knowing God, you may have some work to do in assessing your worldview. Perhaps you need to start applying the truth that you know relating to a Christian worldview. The real blame for the demise exists in each of us and our desire to have more than we currently possess. Those of us on <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Main Street</st1:address></st1:street> also have starring roles in the blame game.
