Redcar U15's rugby match report

Sent in by Peter Griffiths
Redcar Under-15s were at Boro and went down 56-5.

Having to reshuffle due to a number of illness and injury cry-offs was not the ideal preparation as Redcar looked to build on their six game unbeaten run against a strong Middlesbrough outfit.

Winning the toss Redcar went two tries down early on before getting into gear and dominating for some good periods throughout the half.

Tom Wilson showed great strength and determination with two very strong runs; however they were unable to benefit from a number of infringements by Boro and eventually went two further tries down just as the half ended.

A FAULTY conveyor belt caused a fire at the Corus plant at Wilton early today stopping production for an hour. Firefighters were called at about 12.30am. Redcar station watch manager Paul Colling said the fire was caused by the friction of the belt running off track. He said production was stopped for about an hour.

Suicide fear alerts crew

LIFEBOAT crews were alerted for the second time in 48 hours to an apparent suicide bid.

Redcar's two lifeboats were contacted by police just after 7pm yesterday after a woman telephoned home, threatening to take her own life.

The woman, believed to be 32, said she had got off a bus in Redcar and was going to walk into the sea.

Her family contacted police, who called in Redcar RNLI. She was found on dry land by police as the boats prepared to launch.

On Sunday, Redcar lifeboat did launch after a man threatened to jump off the Transporter Bridge.

Now Stephen Blythe, pictured, is turning his attentions to youngsters on Teesside who he hopes will sign up to a series of his classes at the R-Kade skate park in Redcar.

Stephen, 18, always dreamt of pursuing a career in skateboarding, so he is delighted to finally be living out his half-pipe dreams.

Stephen, who works as a skateboarding instructor and a shop assistant for Popcorn Skate in Northallerton, where he lives, said: "I was very much a loner when I was younger. I lived with my nanna and granddad and a lot of people didn't seem to understand that, but once I got into skateboarding I made loads of friends."

Not the worst - But jobs axe may still fall

TEESSIDE has avoided the worst of steelmaker Corus' decision to potentially axe up to 3,500 jobs across the UK.

The company confirmed yesterday that all 47 jobs at risk in its northern engineering services division will be Teesside-based.

But it is not yet known how many of the 100 other jobs to go across Corus' long products division - which employs 13,000 across the UK including about 4,000 locally - will affect local staff.

JUBILANT Poppy Appeal organisers in Redcar are celebrating another record-breaking year.

The Redcar appeal previously smashed its record by 42.5%, with a tremendous total of £16,776.

Organisers thought it unlikely that would be beaten in 2008 - but they were wrong.

Despite hard economic times, Redcar and district folk put their hands in their pockets to the tune of more than £19,000.

Redcar Royal British Legion secretary, Eric Howden, said: "We had hoped for an increase, although after such a record, we had doubts.
