Guisborough play in the semis of the Yorkshire Cup

On paper it promised to be a match to remember when Doncaster Under-17s visited Guisborough in the semis of the Yorkshire Cup.

But that was not so and it will instead be a day everyone will want to forget.

In front of a large crowd, Guisborough went down 17-8 in battlefield conditions with Doncaster out to intimidate from the start.

Show us the image that inspires you most

REDCAR and Cleveland is an area of contrasts, from the Cleveland Hills to the picturesque coastline and from historic country towns to the stark industrial landscape of Wilton.

It is also an area of passionate people who share an often unspoken pride in their history.

To commemorate the pride and passion that exist in the borough, the local Enterprise Team has teamed up with the Evening Gazette to bring you “This is all yours”, a quest to discover what truly inspires people in all parts of Redcar and Cleveland.

More than 1,600 people flocked to the free Picnic in the Priory event on Saturday, with music, archery, crafts, games and story-telling.

While some tried their hands at fencing, others were happy just to relax among the blossom and bluebells as the Gypsy Swing Band played.

Julie Brown, from Guisborough, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant and very nice for the area.”

Gisborian Stewart Clarke, a local councillor for 35 years and a local historian, interviewed well-known twins John and James Bird in their Northgate home in 1990, for an article in the Guisborough Times magazine which he then published. Following John's death Mr Clarke fowarded the article for publication here.

Is it John or is it James.? The answer to that question has baffled people for years and even those who claim to know are still not sure.
