Eaglescliffe Elementis FC

THE UNDER-12s travelled to Hardwick for only their fifth league match of the season and triumphed 2-1.

In a lively game, with both teams coming close early on, Eaglescliffe's Thomas Young and Jack Reay kept the Hardwick defence on their toes.

The deadlock was broken in the second half when a long kick from keeper Joe Rafter was fed through to Young, who finished with a fine strike.

Five minutes later, star man Charlie Hutchinson made it 2-0, but Hardwick never gave up and scored a great goal.

However Elementis held on with a fine display from Matthew Doyle in defence.

CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish an art deco building in Eaglescliffe and build new apartments in its place have been approved.

The proposal to replace 1930's-built the Rookery, pictured above, with 13 apartments within two separate blocks was met with 44 objections.

These included concerns that Eaglescliffe was already saturated with flats, that the building was rare in this area and needed to be preserved and fears over increases in traffic.

An 'outstanding' year for school and sixth form

EGGLESCLIFFE School and Sixth Form are well known for high levels of achievement.

However, even by Egglescliffe standards 2008 has been an outstanding year for the school with record results at A level, record results at GCSE, record results at Key stage 3 and an Ofsted inspection which rated the school "outstanding" for a second time.

A total of 146 sixth form students sat A2 examinations and there was 100% pass rate for the second consecutive year. With an impressive 57% of students gaining grades A or B this was a record for the school and it continued the upward trend in A level results in the last four years.
