Man rescued after threatening to jump from Transporter Bridge

A MAN was rescued amid high drama as he threatened to jump from the Transporter Bridge.

Fire and lifeboat crews and a police negotiator were called to the 200ft-plus bridge at about 8.45pm last night after the man in his 30s had scaled the bridge and made his way to the centre span.

As the negotiator strove to persuade the man to move back behind the safety rails, the Redcar RNLI lifeboat Leicester Challenge 2 stood by.

Firefighters were also stationed on both banks - at the Haverton Hill side and at the Marine station and specially-trained firefighters in immersion suits were ready to dive in if needed.

Four-year sentence for mugging upheld

A THUG who mugged a teenager the day before he was going to take his A-levels has failed in a challenge against his sentence at London's Court of Appeal.

Michael Andrew Morley, of Wellington Street, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to robbery at Teesside Crown Court in September last year. He was jailed for four years.

Lawyers for the 38-year-old challenged his sentence as "manifestly excessive" and called for it to be cut.
