Review: The Stables, Wynyard

A FRIEND'S glowing recommendation prompted us to give The Stables in exclusive Wynyard a whirl.

It was a bit of a trek for a midweek meal, but what's a few extra miles when there's good food to be had?

Inside it's an interesting hybrid of regular pub and separate restaurant with a smart and modern decor - lots of exposed brick and leather seating.

Letter to workers just spelled out facts says Stockton Council

STOCKTON Council today rejected allegations of using "scare tactics" to warn staff off a two-day strike over pay.

Trade union Unison said a number of councils, including Stockton, had written to employees warning they would lose pay and have their pension service broken because of the walkout on July 16 and 17.

A letter sent to employees spelled out exactly how much money workers would lose over the two days of strike action - ranging from ??90 for the lowest paid to more than ??300 for higher earners.

A NEW protocol has been drawn up to reduce the number of times Stockton planning decisions are made against the advice of officers.

A new report reveals that during 2007/08, 24 decisions were made by Stockton Council???s planning committee ???contrary to officer recommendation???.

Of those, 17 were subject to an appeal, and of the 15 appeals determined to date, nine have been allowed by the Planning Inspectorate (PINS). ???It is to avoid repeating such scenarios and the potential costs involved, that the protocol has been drawn up,??? said the report, by Neil Schneider, corporate director of development and neighbourhood services.

EXPLOSIVE moments in Teesside???s history can be witnessed thanks to exclusive film footage obtained by the Gazette.

Two big bangs spelled the end of Thorpe Thewles viaduct, sending thousands of tons of bricks into the air.

The viaduct was spectacularly demolished in two stages, the three-arch span biting the dust in April 1979 and the 16-arch span in June that year.

Both occasions were captured on colour cine film, with sound.
