THE chief executive of Stockton Council, who led the establishment of the authority in the mid 1990s, is leaving to run the new “super council” for County Durham.

George Garlick will become responsible for the biggest local authority in the North-east, serving half a million people, employing 22,000 staff and spending in the region of £1bn a year.

The 52-year-old has been appointed by Durham County Council to lead the reorganisation of local government which will see the eight existing councils in the county brought together to create one new unitary “all purpose” council.

<img alt="christophercurry.jpg" src="http://ts23.gazettelive.co.uk/christophercurry.jpg" width="160" height="525"align="right" /> A STUDENT has vowed never to return to a Teesside nightspot after suffering serious injuries in an unprovoked attack.

Chris Curry, pictured, from Billingham was waiting at the bar in the Cornerhouse club in Middlesbrough at about 2am last Friday when the attacker struck for no apparent reason.

Seventeen-year-old Chris, a business studies student at Bede College in Billingham, was first punched in the jaw then grabbed by the head and kneed in the jaw before being hit again in the face.

“I’ve got no idea why he did it to me,” said Chris.

“I left my friends for a minute to go to the bar and I didn’t even see him, just felt the punch and then it went a blur.

“I remember seeing people pulling him away. I checked my teeth because I thought they had all fallen out.

“They were a bit wobbly, but OKy and then I just left.”

Chris went to college the next morning but his mum Sharon later persuaded him to go to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, for a check-up.

A sound move for Billingham workers

EMPLOYING a voice coach helped Billingham market research company NEMS talk its way to the finals of regional learning and skills awards.

The firm was in the running for the Top Small Employer of the Year in the 2008 Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East’s Celebration of Learning and Skills (CoLaS) Awards.

Bosses Richard Lindsay and Geoff Siggens drafted in the drama teacher to improve the effectiveness of its team of telephone-based market researchers - and cited the innovative idea in its CoLaS award entry form.

Protocol under discussion for Stockton Council’s planning committee

A NEW protocol has been drawn up to reduce the number of times Stockton planning decisions are made against the advice of officers.

A new report reveals that during 2007/08, 24 decisions were made by Stockton Council’s planning committee “contrary to officer recommendation”.

Of those, 17 were subject to an appeal, and of the 15 appeals determined to date, nine have been allowed by the Planning Inspectorate (PINS). “It is to avoid repeating such scenarios and the potential costs involved, that the protocol has been drawn up,” said the report, by Neil Schneider, corporate director of development and neighbourhood services.

Stockton Council says the move will speed up the revamp of the aging 1960s-built sports and leisure complex and reduce overall costs, pictured above an artist's impression of the revamp.

Many Forum users and sports clubs say the closure is a price worth paying for the long-awaited improvements.
