Massive Middlesbrough drugs ring smashed

POLICE have welcomed the convictions of four men embroiled in a huge narcotics conspiracy after Teesside’s biggest ever drugs haul.

The Middlesbrough drugs ring could have put millions of pounds worth of cocaine and heroin on to the streets of Teesside. It was uncovered after a detective spotted a woman on a street corner doing an obvious drug deal with a man in a blue Mercedes.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the car was followed to a house on Oxford Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough.

YOUNGSTERS have been given a chance to judge for themselves how the criminal justice system works.

Thirty children from East Middlesbrough took part in an event at North Ormesby Youth and Community Centre when they had an opportunity to meet a local judge and magistrates.

The young people also took part in an interactive session and heard the experiences of an offender. Hilary Askins, project co-ordinator for the Criminal Justice Initiative, said the event was part of the effort to take the criminal justice system closer to the community.

Vital link in the green chain in Middlesbrough

MIDDLESBROUGH Council has been urging people to Go Green by supporting Communities and Local Government’s Connect To Your Council Day.

The day is aimed at reminding residents they can easily access information on green issues and a range of services in an environmentally friendly way by logging onto the council’s website.

Going online for council services, rather than travelling to council offices, could help save nationally over 14,000 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of 5,362 return air flights from Heathrow to Malaga each year.

Dock death of North Ormesby OAP

AN inquest into the death of a pensioner found floating in Middlesbrough dock has failed to establish exactly how he came to die.

Terrence Leonard, 65, a retired fitter of McCreaton Street, North Ormesby, was found at Middlehaven dock on October 3 last year.

Teesside Coroner’s Court heard he had been spotted by a security guard shortly after 5am “behaving in an irregular manner” at the dockside. He first drove to the dock, then drove away, only to return a short time later, the inquest heard.

<img alt="glentworthhouse.jpg" src="http://ts3.gazettelive.co.uk/glentworthhouse.jpg" width="190" height="252"align="right" /> A YOUNG couple were saved by a neighbour after a blaze ripped through their Middlesbrough flat early today.

He woke the man and woman, in their mid-20s, after spotting smoke on the eleventh floor of Glentworth House tower block in Netherfields, pictured.

Firefighters rescued all three from the flames before tackling the blaze at about 5.40am.

Crew manager Marty Challenor, of Grangetown Fire Station, said: “A neighbour discovered the fire and he started tackling it himself. He raised the alarm and when we got there we took over.”
