Obituary: Joe Hill

A GENUINE war hero who risked his own life to rescue a pilot from a crashed bomber plane has died aged 89.

Joe Hill, pictured with his wife, Dolly, from Beechwood, narrowly escaped death as a young army soldier in 1944, when he dragged a trapped RAF fighter pilot to safety, knowing the burning plane was about to explode.

In 1946 he was awarded the George medal for his bravery - one of just 2000 - presented by King George VI himself at Buckingham Palace. A full military funeral took place on Thursday at Teesside Crematorium with Royal British Legion standard bearers, a Coldstream Guard and a Last Post salute.

Outstanding result for St Thomas More’s Primary School

A ROMAN Catholic primary school given a notice to improve by Government inspectors has now been described as “outstanding” in a review of its religious education.

An inspection by the Diocese of Middlesbrough, called Inspection of Religious Education Collective Worship and The Catholic Life of the School, said St Thomas More’s Primary School “is an outstanding Catholic school”.

The inspection was carried out under section 48 of the Education Act 2005, which tells the governing body to appoint someone to carry out an inspection of its religious education provision.

But now the Bam is back. And legendary Boro super-fan Frankie “Bam Bam” Boynton, pictured above, today revealed he’s planning a trip to his second home, the Riverside Stadium, just five days after he was released from hospital.

The 59-year-old remains a medical mystery. But back in his Easterside home in Middlesbrough today he thanked his thousands of well-wishers.

Vital link in the green chain in Middlesbrough

MIDDLESBROUGH Council has been urging people to Go Green by supporting Communities and Local Government’s Connect To Your Council Day.

The day is aimed at reminding residents they can easily access information on green issues and a range of services in an environmentally friendly way by logging onto the council’s website.

Going online for council services, rather than travelling to council offices, could help save nationally over 14,000 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of 5,362 return air flights from Heathrow to Malaga each year.

French chef serves up success at Newlands School

STODGY puddings and greasy chips and burgers have long disappeared from school dining rooms. Education reporter JOANNA DESIRA, pictured below, went back to school to discover the changing face of lunchtimes.

SCHOOL dinners conjure up memories of thick custard, plates of chips and greasy mince.

There was never much on the school menu to tempt me as a teenager.

And one man who loves Dean’s music is world-renowned for not liking anything or anyone - ever.

TV’s Mr Nasty, Simon Cowell, stopped the 18-year-old hopeful in his tracks as he broke into his performance of Why God, Why? from the musical Miss Saigon, on Saturday night, telling Dean: “I hate that song.”

Tom Pemberton fires up team

THE Under-11s hosted the county cup winners West Hartlepool and played four sessions.

It was Tom Pemberton’s eleventh birthday and he was fired up for the tussle which lifted the whole team.

Acklam really needed to put in the tackles and Shane Hammond and Bradley Gatter lead the line fantastically.

Zak Perria was unlucky not to score on two occasions and only last-ditch tackles on the try line prevented a big upset.
