Marton FC

MARTON started strongly and were unlucky not to score in the opening minutes as Ben Coxon had a shot blocked and the resulting corner was eventually cleared.

Marton pushed on and chances went begging throughout the first half.

Greatham broke out as the first half was coming to an end and only great goalkeeping from Will Lawrence prevented them from taking the lead as he was out sharply to dive at the forward's feet.

The second half started in the same way as the first as Marton pushed on, looking for the goal that would have opened the floodgates, as Greatham defended superbly to keep them at bay.

Nunthorpe YC

NUNTHORPE continued their great start to 2009 with a comfortable 3-1 win over league leaders Kirk Merrington.

Despite blustery conditions, the home side moved the ball well, causing Kirk Merrington problems with their pace.

It was against the run of play when KM's Richard Lee slipped his marker and slotted the ball home for the visitors.

To their credit Nunthorpe responded well and soon equalised with a goal from Dominic James.

Those were the days at wonderful Woolies

IN THE aftermath of the Woolworths closure, Mrs Spence, of Nunthorpe, wonders if any of her ex-colleagues are, as she is, looking back.

Mrs Spence, who started work at the branch in 1939, said life at the store seemed like "the good old days" compared with today's current climate.

"Our jobs were secure," she said.

"The manager himself was strict but fair, and totally Americanised, from his GI haircut to his rimless spectacles and well-polished shoes.

"We had a supervisor who had a nose for shoplifters, usually lads of 10 to 12 years old.

Roadworks in and around Middlesbrough

A66 ROADWORKS

NORTH MIDDLESBROUGH ACCESSIBILITY SCHEME

Lane restriction will again be introduced between the A19 and Newport Interchange to allow works to be completed along the A66 verges. These restrictions will only be introduced after 9.30am on the eastbound carriageway and will be removed by 3.30pm on the westbound carriageway. The 30mph speed limit will continue to be in place throughout the works. Work will commence on Heywood Street at its junction with Newport Roundabout. This will require the diversion of the existing pedestrian route with a temporary pedestrian island being created to allow the safe crossing of Heywood Street. Pedestrians are asked to follow diversion route. Construction work will continue on the inner ring of Newport Roundabout. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation to allow construction of the new roundabout on Riverside Park Road.

As new areas of works come online motorists are asked to take care when driving through the road works.

Further information will be available on www.northmiddlesbroughaccessibility.com
