Pixies Japan

After hard work making sure we got all the Japanese writing correct, it's really awesome to have all seven Pixies Japan discs in hand. Obviously, the discs are significant because it was such an experience to tour Japan, but beyond that, I'm just really proud of the final product.

I think the best shows are Fukuoka (first night, lots of energy, awesome club... definitely a crowd that appreciated the Pixies coming to their town; got the impression that Fukuoka doesn't see as many Western acts as some other cities in Japan) and the first night in Tokyo, which was where everyone really hit their stride and all the nuance of performing in Japan started to become regular.

Anyway, in celebration of the discs arriving, we've changed our prices to the standard US dollar prices, so you'll want to grab one or two of these discs now (they are shipping immediately).

digging japan

Some great things that Japan offers (in my opinion):

1) The vending machines with perfect temperature controlled hot coffee in a can.
2) Really fast trains that take you to far away places in a shorter amount of time than most countries are able to.
3) Local crew's at the venue taking pride in their work and without a doubt, our Japanese traveling production crew setting everything up perfectly upon learning after the first show what needs to be done.
4) The fact that our Japanese production crew can do as good and even a better job than most crews I have dealt with on tour and keep in mind that includes a language barrier.
5) Beer in a vending machine at bars and clubs kicks serious ass, no waiting in a line or a tip needed...if you like can'd liquid.
6) Garbage cans bunched together for all sorts of trash, which can seem time consuming to some Americans (where we, in most of the states, throw everything away into one pile) but way more environmental and cost effective upon recycling and tax payers $/clean up.
7) Sushi.
8) Sake.

tokyo one

Today we are in Tokyo. The band are rocking their way through an amazing set tonight , and the crowd is going crazy. Starting tonights show was a blistering rendition of 'Gouge Away', and the 'Debaser' and 'U Mass' were as good as I have ever heard them. A great night indeed....

peace

Here we are in Japan. We are all really happy to be back here after our last visit in the Summer of 2004. Our first show in Fukuoka was excellent. A very enthusiastic, lively crowd made for a great start to the tour.

Today we have come to the City of Hiroshima by bullet train. What a wonderful public transport system. Hiroshima is a city made famous through the atrocities of warfare. The band and I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum before the show. This museum collects and displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of the Worlds first atomic bombing on the City of Hiroshima. An extremely moving and poignant visit for all...

Tonight show at the Club Quattro is another packed out, sold out show. The band are currently performing 'Dead' as I write this. Enjoy the shows.

fukuoka & hiroshima

What's happened since I last wrote? The band is already 2/7th's of the way through this short tour of Japan. Fukuoka's concert at Drum Logos rocked! These shows are awesome because they are all at small clubs -- the kinds of places where the band thrives (and always plays the best shows; see: Raleigh, NC). The crowd was wild. Lots of singing, and the most polite moshing I've ever seen. I'll post a set list from Tokyo later today, hopefully.

After the show the local promoter took us out for an awesome dinner. As we arrived, people all around the town recognized David & Joe, who both came out to dinner. They signed autographs for a few fans and signed a panel of the wall for the restaurant.

In the morning, we met in the lobby and headed off to Fukuoka's main train station, where we boarded a bullet train for Hiroshima. We were on the train for about an hour and a half before we arrived, and seemed to be travelling very very fast. We went straight to the venue in Hiroshima which turned out to be on the 10th floor of a department store. The area was full of shops, arcades and some cafes.

I'm not even sure what day it is here -- OK, it's Monday morning at 4:20 am. I fell asleap before dinner last night, worn down from a late night in Fukuoka. A lot of us are meeting in the lobby of our hotel to go see the Hiroshima Peace Museum before we leave for a flight to Tokyo at 10. We'll be in Tokyo for a few days -- it will be nice to be in one place for a while. And all of the crew is already looking forward to what happens on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning -- the night before a day off.

More soon from Japan. In the mean time, check out some new photos in my gallery.
