Here is what they have to say.

“First off, we would like to mention that these are not our original thoughts and would like to give credit to master horseman Peter Campbell whom we’ve been riding with for a combined 16 years.

If you feel your colt “wallowing” around a bit in the turn, not getting that back foot set to pivot on and he’s pivoting in the middle of himself in places. If he knows HOW to spin, but he’s having trouble GETTING READY to spin this might help you.

That’s where we see trouble happen with people and their horses…..in the “getting ready”. It’s like getting ready to going to work, we just can’t jump out of bed in the morning, hop in the truck, drive to work and start working. We have to get dressed, brush our teeth, do the hair, pack a lunch, start the diesel to let it warm up, get to work, turn the computer on, make coffee….all those things that we need to do to get ready, the horse has to do the same when we ask him to do something. Even when your horse goes to lie down and to roll, he’ll search around for the perfect spot, then he gets ready to bring his legs under himself, the nose goes on the ground, then he folds his legs up and plunks himself down..we can come up with a hundred examples of getting ready…..but we’re sure you get what we’re getting at.

We know that a reiner spin is different from a cutter turning. The way we understand it, the reining spin is forward momentum/energy while the cutter turn around is backward momentum/energy. Both have to start the same way (more on that later), with the weight shifted back to get the weight off the front end, so the front legs can move—when the weight is on those front legs, they can’t move. It’s when the horse gets correct in the getting ready, that you can add the speed in the spin to get the momentum shifted from backwards to forwards. It’s all about getting the baby steps correct to get the big picture correct.

To start with we would go back to either the snaffle or the bosal. Nothing wrong at all with switching back to the snaffle or bosal even if you have your horse in a bit already. Get him set up to spin by getting him to shift his weight back, he dosen’t need to actually move backwards, but he needs to shift his weight back. Then he needs to look the way he’s going to turn. We see this so so so much it’s not even funny…a horse can’t properly go to the right if he’s not looking right–or left..whichever way. Again, we wouldn’t be wanting anything huge, but his attention needs to be towards where you’re wanting to go, so jiggle your left foot to get his attention to the left or run your hand ever so slightly down the rein to the way you want him to go so he can get ready to go that way, he will look that way. It’s something we would keep enforcing. So, shift his weight back, get his attention to the way you want to go, then ask with your leg to start the turn, then help him stay turning correctly by using your reins. Get him to start correctly and the rest is easy….’cuz he knows how to spin already, he knows where his feet need to be. Even if you just do random turns….like walk a bit, stop, draw to set the weight back, ask for his attention, then turn say 3/4 of a circle, stop, walk off/trot off, stop, draw, attention the other way, turn 1 1/2 circles etc etc. It dosen’t matter how many turns we do if it’s not correct….take the time and help the horse to make it correct.

I would go about fixing any problem this way….set the horse up to be correct in whatever you want him to do, and it gets pretty hard for him to make the mistake. But if he does make the mistake, just stop, take a second and start again.”

This is an article submitted to a 1999 Louisville Sentinel contest to find
out who had the wildest Christmas dinners. It won first prize.

As a joke, my brother Jay used to hang a pair of panty hose over his
fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill
them.

What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every
Christmas morning, although Jay’s kids’ stockings overflowed, his poor
pantyhose hung sadly empty.

One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and went
in search of an inflatable love doll. They don’t sell those things at
Wal-Mart. I had to go to an adult bookstore downtown.

If you’ve never been in an X-rated store, don’t go, you’ll only confuse
yourself. I was there an hour saying things like, ‘What does this do?’
‘You’re kidding me!’ ‘Who would buy that?’ Finally, I made it to the
inflatable doll section.

I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also substitute as
a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush hour.

Finding what I wanted was difficult. ‘Love Dolls’ come in many different
models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do
things I’d only seen in a book on animal husbandry. I settled for ‘Lovable
Louise.’ She was at the bottom of the price scale.

To call Louise a ‘doll’ took a huge leap of imagination.

On Christmas Eve and with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came to
life.

My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning
hours. Long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling pantyhose
with Louise’s pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank what
remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and giggled for a
couple of hours.

The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his house
and left a present that had made him VERY happy, but had left the dog
confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark some
more.

We all agreed that Louise should remain in her pantyhose so the rest of the
family could admire her when they came over for the traditional Christmas
dinner.

My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. ‘What the
hell is that?’ she asked.

My brother quickly explained, ‘It’s a doll.’

‘Who would play with something like that?’ Granny snapped.

I kept my mouth shut.

‘Where are her clothes?’ Granny continued.

‘Boy, that turkey sure smells nice, Gran,’ Jay said, to steer her into the
dining room.

But Granny was relentless. ‘Why doesn’t she have any teeth?’

Again, I could have answered, but why would I? It was Christmas and no one
wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, ‘Hang on Granny, hang
on!’

My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to me and
said, ‘Hey, who’s the naked gal by the fireplace?’ I told him she was Jay’s
friend.

A few minutes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise. Not
just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this might
be Grandpa’s last Christmas at home.

The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died, who
was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise like
my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the mantel,
flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the sofa. The cat
screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and Grandpa ran across
the room, fell to his knees, and began administering mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation.

My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants.

Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the car.

It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember.
Later in my brother’s garage, we conducted a thorough examination to decide
the cause of Louise’s collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered from
a hot ember to the back of her right thigh.

Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her to
perfect health..

I can’t wait until next Christmas.

Ima Smoke N Sayo is on his way home as I write this from spending two month in getting a great foundation at the Almosta Ranch with Al Dunning. I am excited to get this boy home and spend the rest of his two year old year working on getting him ready for the futurities next year and seeing what he can do. Thank you to Jade Keller and Cody Lamont who are top hands at the Almosta Ranch and who play a HUGE role in the success of all of the horses there. I could not have asked for better trainers to put a solid start on Ima Smoke N Sayo.

Problems with your Spin?

Ever have problems with your spin? I just love a nice turn around on my horses but along the way of getting to the perfect turn around I have at times ran into some problems and thought you all might get some use out of the drills I used to fix the problems that I have ran into.

The Problem

1. If your horse has a very clean turn around (front is correct and he is stepping clean) but has all of his weight on the outside hind leg it is a good indication that the back half of his rib cage through is hip is what is sticking out and will need to be straightened up.
2. If your horse is not turning correct and stepping clean with their front end in their turn around it usually indicates lack of control of the shoulders (sticking shoulders out) as well as lack of confidence at times.

The Solution

1. Here are some different things I do. When riding my horse and working on a turn around (lets say to the right) and feel my horse sticking it’s ribs out at me I pick my inside rein straight up (to lift the shoulder) and bring my outside rein back to my hip softening his face and pushing his body over to the right (side passing him) in a square. I have my horse straight and soft between my hands, side stepping him to the right a couple of steps and ask for a quarter of a turn to the right and then side step a couple of steps and turn him a quarter of a turn. I continue to do this in a square till I feel that he is soft and straight underneath me and then ask him to go back into the turn around. As soon as he sticks the ribs back out at me I continue with the same drill. This will teach him to stay straight and keep those ribs in.
1. If I am working with a horse that is a bit more seasoned and is sticking his ribs out at me I pick my inside rein straight up again and bring my outside rein straight back to my hip. Softening his face and while I am still turning I take my outside spure and roll it up on that rib and ask him to hustle his rib. After doing that a few times it will encourage him to pick those ribs up and keep them in with just slight pressure from my leg.

2. If your horse is having trouble with his front end here are some drills to help with that. You want to always maintain forward motion in your turn around. I start by walking my colt in a small circle maintaining forward motion and tipping his nose slightly to the inside of my circle. My legs are just laying on his sides and if he needs more encouragement to remain moving forward I will ask with both legs. Then I am going to bring my outside rein across his neck slightly, keeping his nose tipped slightly to the inside (not so much as to cause him to stick his shoulder out) as keep in mind that horses are bi lateral (if you pull their head to the left their hip is going to go the right and same wise versa). Open up your inside leg and lay our outside leg on him and ask for him to take a few steps crossing over. After I get a few steps or a quarter of a turn in which I can feel him step across I let him go back to his circle maintaining collection and keeping his nose tipped in slightly. Continue this drill nice and easy and making sure not to hustle him as you want to build his confidence in the turn around and not scare him by causing him to bang his legs together and hurting himself.
2. On a more advance horse a good drill is the following to clean up the front end and make him step more correct. When I am are turning my horse to the right and fell him sticking his shoulders out to the left I take my left rein and shove it against his neck tipping his nose to the left but moving his body to the right by pushing him that way with my neck rein. I keep him moving this way a bit till he is soft in his face and moving willingly away from the neck pressure yielding his shoulders. Once he feels good that way, I ask him to stop…keeping his nose tipped slightly to the left… and ask him to turn to the left. Once he sticks that shoulder out to the right this time I do the same drill again by taking my right rein across his neck pushing him to the left with his nose slightly tipped to the right.

So let’s here it…..what are your problems in your spin and what do you do to fix them. My way is MOST CERTAINLY NOT the best or only way to do it so I am looking forward to all the input and thoughts you all have on this topic as we sure all love to see a fancy stepping flying turn around.

Come tuesday morning (mind you at 6am) I was on the road to spend three days at the SHOT Show hosted at the Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas Nevada. The SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show) is a “gear nuts” dream. Everything from hunting gear to full fletched army equipment. Endless booth, endless products, endless opportunity……endless tired/ feet. All in all it was a very productive show for Outdoors International as a lot of great contacts were made and it was great getting to meet the guys from Smith Optics Elite who we are just in the process of setting up with a new site and looking forward to a partnership with OI and it was equally as great to meet with the guys from Kryptek. Kryptek has been a GREAT partner for OI as they outfit the guys with the best camo clothing in the industry.

So with the work aside there had to be a little bit of time for playing. We walked the strip (to and from the Sands Expo Convention Center) every day which was my excuse of exercise after all the food I foundered on. Just a side note…..do not try to start a low carb diet right before you go to Vegas. It will NOT work. The first night in town we enjoyed a great meal at the Brazilian Buffet in the Planet Hollywood Towers that was exceptional and ended up causing me to consume way more food then any one person should be allowed to. This is where all the walking came in handy. (-; Last evening was I would say probably the best evening in Vegas as Chris Burget hooked us up with VIP tickets to the Golden Moose Awards hosted by the Outdoor Channel. Even though I am still totally new to the whole hunting world and really had no clue who had what show and if it was good or not it was fun to kick it in style feasting on prime rib, delicious salads, super good deserts and all you can drink beverages while watching guys like Shawn Michaels and Ted Nugent receiving awards for what they do in the hunting community. Duck Commander ended up winning the best overal award which was fun to see as it seems there is never a boring moment with that group. The evening was completed with getting to watch the Zac Brown Band in concert which was awesome all together and recommended for everybody.

All in all I am somewhat glad for this trip to end and to get back home but trust me I will return to Vegas…..when they have a equine event going on. (-: I am already making my list of options:
