Tsukuba International School (つくば・インターナショナル・スクール, TIS) is an IB World School in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan. We offer a rich educational program for students from pre-kindergarten (age 3) to Grade 12 (age 18). We are authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB). IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit the International Baccalaureate website.

TIS was founded in September 1992 to provide an international education in English to students in the Tsukuba area.
*The Diploma Programme is a two-year programme that starts at the beginning of Grade 11 and finishes at the end of Grade 12. It is, therefore, very difficult for students to join our school as new students after the start of Grade 11. Also, since students need to make many important decisions about their courses before starting the Diploma Programme in Grade 11, it is better for students to already be at our school in Grade 10 so we can advise them on their choices.

Dear TIS Class of 2021, In the year that AM joined our school, we had 9 students in total at …

Dear TIS Class of 2021,

In the year that AM joined our school, we had 9 students in total at the beginning of the school year. When HK joined our school in 2009, we had 44 students, and we were not yet officially an International Baccalaureate World School. We gained authorization for the Primary Years Programme when AM and HK were in Grade 2. By 2013, when FE, MI, ZK, and MY joined in Grade 5, we had 117 students, and in 2014, we gained authorization for the Middle Years Programme, just in time for them to start Grade 6. When KS, MY, KM, and KY joined in Grade 6 and 7, we had around 150 students, and we had made the decision to offer the Diploma Programme, but we still didn’t have enough classrooms to do that. When DF, HN, JS, NN, MT, and ET joined in Grades 8 through 10, we were authorized for the Diploma Programme, but we still hadn’t graduated any students from the DP. Then, MM and BS joined after our first DP students graduated in 2019.

This class has witnessed our school going from nine students to the 285 that we have today, and has experienced our campus growing from one building with 10 classrooms on a small parcel of land to a two-building school with its own forest. The members of this class have been a part of our school’s journey to becoming a full continuum IB World School offering the PYP, MYP, and DP. At this point, I would like to thank all of you for having faith in our school and believing in our shared vision of becoming the school that we are today. It has been my absolute pleasure to share this journey with you, and I hope that you will come back and see how much farther we can get now that we have built such a strong foundation with your help.

I’m trying to keep my speech under three minutes long, so I will leave you today with a quote from Lady Gaga.

You are the seeds that will grow into a new and different forest that is far more beautiful and loving than the one we live in today.

Lady Gaga’s constant message, through her songs and her career, is that it is okay to be you, it’s okay to be different, and it’s okay for other people to be different too. Dear Class of 2021, I hope that your time at TIS has taught you to have the kind of insight and empathy that Lady Gaga wants us all to have. When you leave our school and go out to write the next chapter of your life, you will encounter people who are not just different from you, they might have opinions and views that are actually diametrically opposed to yours. Here’s what I hope that you, as a graduate of Tsukuba International School, will choose to do when that happens: rather than shutting people down, or labelling them or their views as worthless, make the braver choice to take the time to listen to, and learn from, all people that you encounter, and aim to accept and celebrate the full range of human diversity.

The entirety of the TIS community — younger and older students, parents, and teachers — has come together in the forests of Kamigo to help you become the person you are today. Know that we will always be proud of you and we will always want to hear about your successes and your challenges, so please come back and visit us whenever you can. Carry what you have learned at TIS with you, in your heart, no matter how far you roam, and think of all of us whenever you are in a forest.

Dear class of 2020, Congratulations! What a year we have had! I saw a meme the other day that said …

Dear class of 2020,

Congratulations!

What a year we have had! I saw a meme the other day that said that no one who answered the question in 2015, “Where do you see yourself in five years” got it right. The events that have transpired over the past few months have been unprecedented in so many ways. No one could have ever predicted that there would come a time when schools and businesses would shut down for several months because of something so small that we can’t even see.

And probably no one could have predicted how quickly we would all respond and adapt to the new situation. When you think about it, it is quite remarkable how quickly we have all shifted gears and tried to make the best of the hand we have been dealt.

But maybe we shouldn’t be so surprised. When the Class of 2020 were in Grade 3, we experienced the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake, and shortly after that, the death of our second principal, Mr. Kano. Our problems seemed pretty unsurmountable at the time, just as they may do now, but with a bit of human ingenuity, we were able to push through the noise and confusion, and keep our community on its path, although perhaps a different path from what we would have predicted back in 2008.

I mention 2008, because that is when one of our graduates, Student A (names have been removed for privacy), joined the school. And, in fact, that is also when I joined the school. So, technically, she and I are “doukyuusei”, or “of the same year”. Students B and C joined one year later, when the West Building was first built. Student D joined in the 2013-14 school year, when our school first gained authorization for the Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate. Students E, F, and G joined in the 2017-18 year, which is the year after we gained authorization for the Diploma Programme and the year when we gained CIS accreditation. And then, Students H and I joined in 2018-19 when we had our first DP exams and graduates.

When you look at the history of our school since 2008, you can see a remarkable display of human tenacity and our pioneering spirit. You can knock us down, but we will soon find a way to get back up.

To the class of 2020, I hope that you will remember your years at TIS, whether you were here for two years or twelve, with that in mind. There is a Japanese proverb that roughly translates to “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” When you look back at your school years, you might remember some of the times that you fell. But you got up again, and now here you are, graduating. And when you go out in the world beyond TIS, you are going to fall some more. Sometimes you will fall spectacularly. And when you do, just remember to get back up again. And maybe, when you get up, you might just decide that the path that you were on, the one that made you fall, wasn’t the right path anyway, and it took a faceplant in some mud to get you to see that. Falling, and failing, are just signs that you are moving, and thinking, and feeling. In other words, signs that you are human.

So, class of 2020, the first graduating class with three students who have spent the entire twelve years of their education at our school, I congratulate you on your graduation today. I say this whenever anyone leaves our community. You are a part of a very special family, and you will always have a home at TIS. And, wherever your heart takes you from here, I hope you will take a little bit of us with you.
