Surya Maattrraan Movie Review

2012-10-12T23:50:00.002-07:00

Starring : Suriya, Kajal Agarwal, Sachin Khedekar, Tara, Isha Sharvani

Direction : KV Anand

Music : Harris Jeyaraj

Production : AGS,EROS

He terrific trio Suriya, KV Anand and Harris Jayaraj is back again with “Maattrraan” after their successful Ayan. The expectation level from them has been quite high. Does KV Anand hitsa hatrick with Maattraan? Read on to know more…

KV Anand and Suba should have done a tremendous research before writing this script and kudos to them. Suba just proved that strong script writers like them can take Tamil cinema to the next level. KV Anand has as usual stunned us with his choice of breath taking locations especially in the ‘Naanikoni’ song and in the second half that takes place in Russia.
Suriya breathes the role of Akhilan and Vimalan. He has showed great difference in portraying both the characters. Akhilan is a jolly going guy whereas Vimalan is the innocent and intelligent guy. Akhilan is a scream. He brings the roof down every time with his witty oneliners and Suriya’s hardwork is clearly visible in the stunt sequences especially in the interval block and pre-climax stunts.
Kajal plays a bubbly character and KV Anand has given an important role for her. Her combination scenes with Akhilan in Russia are good. Sachin Khadekar plays a cold-blooded genetic scientist character. With all his experience he has given a convincing performance. However, the length of the film is something which is painstakingly long.
Cinematography by Soundarrajan is applaudable. He has given brilliant visuals in Naanikoni and in the pre climax fight portions in Russia. Editing by Antony is crisp. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are okay and his BGM is good. The duo has conveyed a social message on the effects of genetically modified food products and how science can fail when it comes to rescuing the affected. But one wonders whether we need a commercial masala flick like Maattrraan to convey this ina half-baked way! The translating portions by Kajal in Russia and the climax may not appeal with the masses. In the second half, logic takes a major setback. One wonders how K V Anand, who had been a master of logic in his previous films failed to take note of this setbacks. On the whole the first half of the movie is entertaining and the second half is passable.

Hearing Postponed For Thuppakki Movie

2012-07-17T11:02:00.001-07:00

The hearing of Vijay's Thuppakki title issue, scheduled in a Chennai civil court on July 16 has been postponed. Now, the hearing will take place on July 19.The court earlier granted an injunction till July 16 restraining the makers of Thuppakki from using the title of the AR Murugadoss directorial film in any forms. The justice passed the order on an application filed by upcoming director Ravi Devan. The petitioner had claimed that he had registered the title Kallathuppakki in the year 2009 itself and it's been renewed every year and the film production is in the process and at the completion stage. At this stage, if the said title was given to them, then definitely he will be put to secure loss and hardship. He had also claimed that the logo of Vijay's film has a striking resemblance to the logo of his film.On the other end, Kalaipuli S Dhanu filed a counter affidavit denying the accusations made against them and said that Thuppakki and Kallathuppakki do not convey the same meaning and the comparison should not be drawn between the titles. "Thuppakki means a licensed weapon and Kallathuppakki means an unlicensed weapon," he pleaded.According to him, words that sound phonetically similar but conveying diagonally opposite meaning cannot be termed as similar words. The logo of the gun advertised by Kalaipuli for Thuppakki bearing a striking resemblance to Kallathuppakki is too far fetched imagination and puerile and no person can assert ownership for a logo depicting a common object like a gun, he appealed.

2012-07-13T02:31:00.000-07:00

Film: Billa 2

Starring: Ajith,Parvathy Omanakuttan,Bruna Abdullah,Vidyut Jamwal
Director: Chakri Toleti
Producer: Suresh Balaje, George Pius,Sunir Khetrapal
Banner: IN Entertainment
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Ajith sizzles as don The suspense is finally over. The hype and hoopla has receded as the first show of Billa 2 is done and dusted. The question that immediately pops up in one's mind is whether the movie is worth a watch? Does it match its first part? The answer could be a yes, but partially.Billa 2 is a prequel to Ajith's 2007 film Billa which was directed by Vishnuvardhan. The new edition is directed by Chakri Toleti who has wielded the megaphone for Unnaipol Oruvan. The film traces the history of a dreaded gangster David Billa and finds out the reasons behind his transformation from an ordinary man to a warlord.Pravathy Omnakuttan and Bruna Abdullah play female leads while Bollywood stars Sudhanshu Pandey and Vidyuth Jamwal are cast as baddies. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography by R D Rajasekar. The movie relies heavily on Ajith. With a wafer-thin storyline, at places events unfold quickly to sustain our interest. Produced by Sunir Khetarpal, George Pius and Suresh Balajee, Billa 2 is strictly for Ajith fans

Story

David Billa (Ajith) a Lankan refugee comes to a camp in Rameshwaram. He fights against injustice in the refugee camp. Now he comes across a few mafias and tries to become one. Slowly he moves towards achieving his mission and meets Abbasi (Sudhanshu Pandey) in Goa. Abbasi is a dreaded mafia don. Billa manages to win his patronage and makes trip to Georgia to meet an international don Dmitri (Vidyut Jamwal). As it happens, the rise of Billa creates a rift in between him Billa and Abbasi. Now Billa decides to announce his arrival.Several hurdles come his way including Dmitri himself. How he accomplished the task is the rest.

Report

Ajith shoulders the burden as he did in the first part. He is at ease playing a baddie. It is no easy task to do such a character, but he does it well. Especially the climax stunt sequence is a treat for Ajith fans.Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah seem to play cameos. They come and disappear.Sudhanshu and Vidyut are majestic and have terrific screen presence. Also the film has Ilavarasu, Manoj K Jayan and Rahman.

Technicalities

Rajasekhar's camera speaks a lot in Billa 2. Be it Goa, Chennai or Georgia, he captures them well. Yuvan's music is a letdown. He manages to bring solace with his background score. Dialogues by Era Murugan are worth to listen. 'Mathavanoda Bayam dan nambaloda Balam is one of the highlights.Selva's art works are authentic.

Analysis

It is a triucky tale for the story is wafer-thin. But Chakri has ensured that events unfold at quick pace. Sadly more brawny and less brainy, Billa 2 sparkles in moments. It is a thorough entertainer for Ajith fans.

Positive

Ajith's performance
Era Murugan's dialogues
RD Rajasekar's camera

Negative

No logic
Average music by Yuvan
Too much action
