Thanks for the tips guys. I'm really digging this BreedLove and think I made the right choice in buying it. I'll get to try it out at church in a couple of weeks when I'm back to playing acoustic (I normally play electric). I'll be running it direct to the FOH mixer so we'll see how it goes in a big room (800+ seats). This Saturday I'll be using it unplugged at a nursing home gig with another group from church. I'm sure it will project better than my T5 ever did (the T5 was great plugged in but just didn't cut it as a truly "acoustic" acoustic guitar when going unplugged). Anyway, I love the feel of my new BreedLove and I'm sure I made a wise investment in it.

Are you a Costco member? If so, they often stock decent inexpensive Yamaha acoustic guitars that are great for beginners....added bonus is that they will refund you your money if you are not serious about playing a year or more later.

yeah, I hated the thought of learning scales until the guitarist in my band drew me a chart similar to what you've put up. That was when I was a bass player, and it totally revolutionised the way I was playing bass, adding in harmonising notes, 7th notes, a lot more stepping notes between chords.

But I still just wanted to strum! So I picked up a few guitars instead. But this is good - when I finally get my tele, I'll keep it at home and learn some scales from this post.

So I add my thanks!

An excellent value Jazz guitar is the Japanese made Ibanez Artist John Scofield model. It plays as good, if not better than most new ES-335s, and costs about as much as the ES-137. I stupidly sold mine when I thought my jazz days were over..... Plays like a late 60s ES-335 (apparently those are the best years for a 335).

I played one Tokai to date, that was a knock off of the pink paisley Tele. Not sure of the age but it was selling for $1600 at the Guitar Center Hollywood. I thought the guitar was great. Looked, played and sounded just like a high-quality Tele.

Also, I know many people love the Tokai "Love Rock" Les Paul copies that we made back in the day.

My impression is that Tokai, like most Japanese builders, puts out instruments of very good quality. I own two guitars that were built in Japan (Tele Custom reissue and a Kramer hair metal guitar) and I am very pleased with both.

I'm new to the music world and have done some research as to what guitar to invest in and I'm thinking about the ESP LTD AX-260. What's the word on this instrument? Some have also suggested an Ibanez. I'm looking to play thrash or speed metal like Bullet for my Valentine, Avenge Sevenfold, Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage. Which brand is better overall for a beginner. I'd like to keep the price in the $400 range or less. Any input and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ESP and Ibanez are both reputable companies that make a lot of guitars well suited for metal and high-gain rock. Both companies offer guitars made overseas that are affordable and of good quality.

My opinion? You're going down the right path. Get a good guitar that is very playable, stays in tune, sounds great and looks cool at the same time. You can do the same with a small practice amp -- again, there are many out there, but Vox, Line 6 and Fender all make small amps that are affordable and give you a lot of options (check out modeling amps that mimic the tones of multiple amps and effects pedals).

You also have a ton of on-line resources for learning how to play guitar. Even youtube has thousands of guitar instructional videos.

Have fun and stick with it. I really began playing guitar in college and 20 years later it's still my favorite pastime.

The distinctive lead tone on Wicked Game is definitely a Fender Stratocaster. I saw Chris' guitarist play this live and it sounded great. It was a new-ish model with a vintage look. I think he may have had locking machine heads on the tuners to use the whammy that much and stay in tune. Live he also used a slide (glass, I believe).

What really makes that tone sound so good is the bright amp (I think it was a Fender Twin Reverb) with just the right about of reverb and tapping delay.

If you like that lead tone....Listen to Robert Plant's Big Log. It's a very similar tone, and feel....perhaps a bit more "Straty"

Line6 Plug-in Sale

I got an email from Line6 inviting me to pick up all of the additional models and plug-ins for the Podxt Live for $79. I've watched the price of just the plug-in capability go from $199 to $99 to now $79 with the model packs...so decided to take up the offer.

First off, the plug-in rocks. Better than Amplitube in my opinion, which I also own. The Line6 user interface is identical to GearBox, and GearBox (in conjunction with the DSPs on your Pod) can act as a zero-latency monitoring application with ProTools and Logic (I've recently switched to Macs for music)....so basically you get all of the great tones of your Line6 Pod, as a alterable plug-in in your favorite recording tool. I had 4 instances running in a mix and it wasn't killing my CPU....and I'm able to continue to layer on tracks without having to change the sound interface's buffer settings. The only drawback is that your Pod needs to be plugged into the USB port even if you are just playing back parts that use the plug-in. I need to figure out if playback is possible with my smaller TonePort....or maybe I've finally found a reason to breakdown and get a PocketPod.

Then, on top of the plug-in, the new model packs are really good. There are a few new amp models that sound closer to the real thing than previous versions.... I'm loving "Line6 Sparkle".... It sounds as good as my Champion 600 mic'd. There are tons of presets and even some great bass and vocal settings (Avalon 737sp simulation...I'll definitely be putting that through its paces).

All-in-all, I think this is an excellent value....simply upgrading my Amplitube license to run on my Mac would have cost $200, so for $79, this was well worth it. To top it off, all of the new tones/models are download-able to my Pods.

If you're interested, better hurry.... this offer is only this weekend.

Hi, I replaced the batteries in my Micro BR today and since then it's not worked at all. It won't turn on. I've checked for the obvious (ie batteries are the right type, hold isn't on), but it all leads to dead ends. Anyone able to solve this problem?

Thanks

Slashdot | Wood Density May Explain Stradivarius Secret (http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/07/03/1329236&from=rss)

Interesting article and discussion on Slashdot on wood density and Stradivarius violins... some folks in the discussion are extrapolating it to guitars. Maybe it means that with the right wood or wood processing, they might be able to produce the perfect sustaining, lightweight guitar?
