Afro beat singer Kamichi has finally broken the silence since his controversial dismissal on stage with Butera Knowless in Rusizi during the first road show of Primus Guma Guma Super Star. The star, who was hugely humiliated at the event, became a laughing stock in Western province when at the eleventh hour he was told to march off the stage to leave only Knowless in limelight to perform.

During the latter’s turn to perform her song Rukuruzi in which she features Kamichi, it was expected that the two would appear on stage at the same time, but it was not to be. When Knowless was called, Kamichi promptly followed her, only to be hauled off, leaving Knowless as the sole performer. That seemed reason enough not only to embarrass Kamichi, but also to annoy him.

And for the first time since that infamously mortification moment, Kamichi has opened up. In a voice clearly full of frustration, he said, “According to the way we had planned, we were supposed to perform together. I don’t understand what made her change her mind all over a sudden. It was wrong of her and she should never do such a thing again.”

Wrangles and in-fighting in Rwandan music industry have been on a sharp rise. As a way of busting into popularity, musicians have used this vital tool of washing their dirty linen in public in order to climb up the echelons of fame.

Chief music producer at Press One Entertainment Lick Lick has reportedly quit the label house and instead switched to More Records. Lick Lick, who is also a member of Press One – a label house based in USA, confirmed the news while talking to a popular local website igihe.com. In a long and elaborative interview, the veteran producer explained that he had not totally abandoned the studio, but instead said that it was due to the fact that he had shifted from the state of Chicago to Dayton Ohio.

The news comes as a great shock to those who have been anxiously waiting for the return of this much anticipated crew in the country, which also incorporates K8 Kavuyo, Meddy and The Ben. Earlier reports had indicated that the quartet was planning a hit tour in Rwanda dubbed Ndi uw’i Kigali, to remind their fans they were still in their hearts.

And while confirming the developments, Lick Lick said, “Yes it’s true that I have quit but not permanently. I will always work with musicians of the label if they want me, much as they can look for someone else to work with them because for me I have no problem with that.” The timing couldn’t have been perfect. The fact that Lick Lick went further to move to another state has fuelled speculations that all may not be well between him and the other members of the house.

Those who have worked with Lick Lick have always accused him of parting ways with the people he has worked with prematurely. An example given is that of Paccy, a female rapper whom he worked with before parting ways acrimoniously after impregnating her.

The duo, based in USA, have always led to speculations that they were coming back, but now it has been made official. Press One harbors the likes of K8 Kavuyo, producer Lick Lick, Meddy and The Ben.

Earlier this month they released a song entitled Ndi uw’i Kigali, which translates to I belong to Kigali. Now the label has embarked on a tour that will see them land in Rwanda, in what seems like a comeback to the local music scene. Both Meddy and The Ben have always been loved and appreciated by their fans needless to say that when they left to seek pastures green elsewhere the disappointment was there for all to see.

They had raised the bar high, so high that before they took to the West the likes of King James had completely failed to make an impact into the local music scene. Experts have attributed James’ success to the disappearance of the two, and if their comeback will be permanent, it will be an interesting scenario to watch. Meanwhile K8 Kavuyo has denied allegations that Ndi uw’i Kigali was produced by DJ Zizou, indicating that he was only given the permission to use it in his mix tape.

DJ Zizou at the annual Salax Awards 2013. Photo/Archive

He said, “The song was produced by Press One, but Zizou was given the go-ahead to use it in his mix tape which he will release this year. However I have recorded another song with him to be released soon. It also features some well known music figures in Kigali.” He concluded by affirming that Zizou is “a normal partner of Press One”.

The songbird is said to have been dating her longtime boyfriend Safi of Urban Boyz crew, but she has vehemently denied the two are back together, and that she is not dating any man for that matter. Rumors had been doing their rounds on the internet that Knowless and Safi were reuniting in one of the most dramatized love stories, but the diva has rebuffed them, putting an end to the long speculations linking her to a move back to him.

She said, “If I ever get to a point where I am ready to let you know then I will do that, but I know the news will leak out before I make the relationship public anyway! There are always speculations that I am dating so and so, but they are all untrue and unfounded, so it’s better you let go of them.” In a live show dubbed Sunday Night on Isango Star, Knowless was invited alongside Safi, further spicing up the rumors. But even Safi himself could not hide the fact that it was over between the two.

King James and Knowless’ manager Ishimwe Clement from Kina Music have also been said to be suitors of the beauty queen, but the usual answer from the duo when that question was thrown towards them was a casual no. At one time Clement joked that he would not get enough dowry to pay off for Knowless, saying she would be too expensive for him!

Contestants of this year’s reality TV show, Primus Guma Guma Super Star are on their toes as the caravan heads in Ngoma, Eastern Province for the fifth road show. Already fans all over the country have started to show their support for their favorite musicians by voting them through cell phone texts. After impressing in their last four sites namely Rusizi, Nyamagabe, Huye and Karongi, the scramble for votes is becoming stiffer and stiffer as the eleven contestants have stepped up their campaign strategies.

One such contender who has become a thorn in the tissue is Senderi Internatona Hit, who has sought the support of Rayon Sport fans, the country’s most popular football club in terms of fan base. Senderi publicly declared that he would bring in two world class players should he win the coveted prize of 26m Rwf, although other contestants have almost emulated his strategy. Butera Knowless has been spotted on numerous occasions at the club’s training facilities, and she has also attended some of the major matches that Rayon has played, indicating that the battle of the votes is heading for a dramatic finish.

But speaking to tukabyine.com ahead of the trip, Senderi remained defiant that he was sure of winning the competition saying he was the better candidate with the highest popularity, and thus the most well placed to win it. He said, “I have no doubt in my fans and in myself that I am going to win it. If I don’t win it, then who else will?

Primus Guma Guma Super Star is an annual music competition contested for a period of three months and brings together ten most popular musicians in the country. The third edition will see the winner go home with 26m Rwf, while the other four will get cash rewards that range from five million to one million Rwandan francs.

RnB musician Nason has indicated that competition in music industry has become stiffer as more musicians flock in it. Nason, who has been criticized by pundits and fans alike, said that upcoming young musicians have come out firing on cylinders, giving the so called established musicians a reason to panic.

According to Nason, signs are there for all to see, which is an indication of how the Rwandan music industry has made tremendous stride. He said, “I think we are about to experience a revolution in our music. The level we have achieved over the last seven years is amazing.” Asked if that gave him reason to panic as he’s being overtaken by underground musicians, Nason only smiled and said, “No, I only give my best where I can as my objective is not to compete but rather to entertain.”

Meanwhile a section of the star’s fans have criticized him of public misconduct after one fan took to his Facebook wall and accused him of overly drinking and misbehaving in public. He was quoted as saying, “Nason has overgrown his stature and become too confident. Because of that he has fallen down the ranks. I think he will one day realize that he won’t even be able to get to where he used to be.”

The ever controversial rapper Professor Nigga (as he calls himself) is in the headlines again – and for the wrong reasons obviously. The volatile musician turned radio presenter has always brushed shoulders with different people, including fellow musicians and journalists, and this time round he has hit hard on an unnamed radio presenter whom he asserts works at RC Huye. Through his Facebook account, Nigga said the radio presenter had received orders restraining him from playing his music, a factor the latter finds irritating.

He was quoted as saying, “Those who said my songs are political are liars who are there to simply taint my name.” Although he acknowledged having composed one such song, Professor Nigga said it was only a one-time thing. “Yes I did one such song, but is it wrong for someone to express his opinions?” he added.

An increasing number of journalists, radio presenters and musicians have, at one time or another, been in collision with Professor Nigga. Early this year, the rapper accused Nizzo of Urban Boyz crew of being a voyeur, and that he did not care for his own father who, according to him, was rotting in poverty. He went ahead and insulted the then manager of the crew, Alex Muyoboke, of being an opportunist who only reaps where he has not sown. Although the media law that regulates internet content has not been clearly ratified, it’s believed if the case was taken to police authorities, Professor Nigga could be apprehended and charged with defamation of character.

Meddy (Left) and The Ben. The departure of the two left a gap in Rwandan music industry

Their departure was treated by many as a blow to Rwanda’s music industry and rightly so. The Ben and Meddy’s tight grip to fame as far as music is concerned was self-manifested in various ways including their ever surging popularity at the time. Yet, there were direct beneficiaries who breathed a sigh of relief when the duo left the country. Arguably one of those recipients was King James who was struggling with making a mark to no avail. Others include Tom Close, although he had featured The Ben severally in his songs, the latter was overtaking him at an uncontrollable velocity.

In retrospect, people have always pondered what would have happened had the two decided to stick in the country. The obvious prediction is that they would have dominated the charts and airwaves, but a different scenario would stare them were they decide to make a sensational comeback. Already, groups such as Urban Boyz, Dream Boyz, TNP and TBB have perfectly established themselves and besides, the absence of The Ben and Meddy has only aided them in fading from their fans’ memories as opposed to being missed.

Upcoming musician Bruce Melody has proven himself to be musically talented

Just a few days ago Meddy and The Ben released a song entitled Ndi uw’i Kigali, which literally translates to “I belong to Kigali,” further fuelling speculations that the two may be heading for a dramatic comeback after all. Yet as the news might be a rumor more than anything else, their return would be a major boost in an industry whose fire has slowly died down. The competition, the zeal and zest that have marked Rwandan showbiz during their times would be an interesting scenario to closely monitor. Just imagine if Primus Guma Guma Guma Super Star was to feature these two alongside other kingpins such Urban Boyz, Knowless and the rest!

Most interesting to watch would be how the two would cope with the stiff competition that has come with ever springing musicians with abundant talent on display such as Bruce Melody, Elion Victory, Christopher or even Jules Sentore. Whatever the outcome would be, it would be of direct benefit to Rwandan music industry and showbiz in general.
