It’s been far too long since I’ve paid a visit to Glendalough Lake with a camera in hand. I can’t believe I’d forgotten how truely beautiful it is. I think it could be one of the few places in the world where you can’t take a bad picture, close your eyes, turn around a few times -CLICK- and you’ll still get a beautiful picture.

CIMMERIAN
‘of, pertaining to , or suggestive of a western people believed to dwell in a land of perpetual darkness.’

Inspired by classical mythology, the striking imagery of fashion photographer Kevin Sinclair and an awe-inspiring collection from NCAD alumni Kaitriona Elliott, ‘CIMMERIAN’ is a stunning high fashion editorial based around a dark and twisted theme. The essence of darkness, danger and impending doom is at once captured within Kaitriona’s unique studded leather and woven rope garments, with creative styling focusing on textural elements; high shine, tassel’s, spikes, studs, sequins, and various print details. Corresponding deeply shaded makeup styles, alongside sleek hair with high shine compliment and enhance the overall polished styles.

The lighting for Cimmerian was formulated to enhance the amazing textures Kaitriona Elliott had infused within her collection with the final photographs preconceived in black & white. I wanted the photographs to be visually timeless with a scent of dark and broodinness.

I don’t usually post youtube or vimeo videos on this site but this is one of the coolest pieces I have seen. At first I wasn’t sure if it would actually work so I ran upstairs to get the camera, it sure does work!! Grab your camera, set it to f/5.6, 1 second and 1-200ISO/ASA and try it out.

Silent Moments – IADT Photography Exhibition

I would love to welcome you all to one of this years hottest exhibitions. Silent moments is a group exhibition showing work from 23 students (including myself) studying at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, or IADT to you and me. I have seen most of the projects from initial idea to proofs, through to final prints and the work is fantastic. Conceptually and visually this will be a treat! This is a show not to be missed.

Panasonic DMC-TS2 Disable Underwater Precaution

As some of you may have heard I got the lovely Panasonic DMC-TS1 camera a few months ago and was loving it for kayaking. After about 6/7months it start to play up and needed constant turning on/off to take photos and videos. The great people at Panasonic USA Support exchanged my Panasonic DMC-TS1 for a brand spanking new Panasonic DMC TS2 as it was still under warranty.

This is a great camera and quite an upgrade in my opinion. There was one thing that really bugged me about the camera though. Every single time I turned it on I was prompted to view the Underwater precautions that come with this camera.

DMC-TS2 | Disable Underwater precautions

I tried pressing every button on the camera, going through every menu plenty of times, quickly looked through the manual and was half way through an email to Tech support for the answer. All I needed was patience. Then I finally gave in and read the manual properly.

Here is what to do:
- Turn on your Panasonic DMC-TS2
- When prompted to view the underwater precautions, select ‘yes‘
- Have some patience, this is actually a slideshow
- That’s it….

Once the 9/9 slides are done, just hit ‘end’ and you will never have to view the underwater precautions again.

What did we learn? Have more (than 2 seconds) patience when turning your camera on for the first time.

Shooting ESB’s Financial report

Last year I had the pleasure of collaborating with Zahra Publishing to create ESB’s Financial Report. They had seen some of my light painting & wanted incorporate this style of photography in the report. We wanted to inject a sense of youth and future growth into this project.

The following are some of the concept boards and ideas:

I loved the initial concept boards and could perfectly visualise the final images & how I was going to shoot the project. There was a huge amount of planning involved in the setup of the photos. Each image had to be setup in a manner that was easy to stencil with light painting. The drawings couldn’t be too complex and percise as we wanted the viewer to imagine a child had created the light . These light paintings were drawn in a completely dark studio & then layered on top of the original images in photoshop.

Futureproof

Futureproof was a concept thought up in late 2010 while driving through Dublin to the airport in the early hours. The whole of Dublin was quiet & empty and I began to imagine a shoot in some of the busiest locations in Dublin with there being a stillness in the air.

A HUGE thank you to everybody who made this possible, this was a fun 4am start and 6/7pm finish, ’twas a long & worthy day!!
