In this tutorial we are going to create Super Mario mascot. I once saw a pillow in a shape of Super Mario. And it seemed like a good idea for the tutorial. So let’s get started!

Final image:

Below is the final image of Mario mascot we will be working today.

Step 1

Create new document 400px by 400px. With Rounded Rectangle Tool create 144px by 380px rectangle with 80px radius. Set the color to R=247 G=226 B=208 with no stroke. Rename this layer Body. You will find it easier later on.

Step 2

Select white arrow key (A) and click bottom right anchor point. Select handle and pull it down a little bit.

Step 3

Next select bottom left anchor point and drag handle down like in previous step. Our bottom part of shape looks like on picture below.

In this tutorial I will take you through process of creating penguin using nothing but circles and eclipses.

Final image:

Below is the final image we will be working towards.

Step 1

Create new document 500px by 500px with white background. Draw a circle fill it with black color, no stroke. Copy this circle and paste it in front (CTRL+C & CTRL+F). Over these two circles draw ellipse like showing on picture below.

Step 2

With Selection tool (black arrow) select ellipse and one circle (hold shift and click on both elements). Select Pathfinder pallet (Window –> Pathfinder) and use Minus back (second icon in upper row). With selected new shape use Object – Path – Offset path with Offset -3px like shown on picture below. Color it white. Select all and group it (CTRL+G).

Step 3

Let’s create eyes now. Draw another circle and fill it with white color. Select Gradient panel (Window –> Gradient) and use settings below. For the eyeball, draw another black circle and place it in the middle of eye circle, we just made. Now create third little white circle and place it in the upper right part of the penguin eyeball circle.

Step 4

Select all eyes circles and group (CTRL+G) them. Select Object – Transform – Reflect and use settings below. Press Copy. Don’t press OK, because these reflect the original eye. If you press Copy, you reflect copy of the original. Put copy of eye to the right.

Step 5

Now it’s nose time. Draw eclipse between eyes and color it orange. To make it feel like a real nose, create another smaller eclipse and put it in the middle of orange one. Use Gradient panel and create linear gradient. Use lighter and darker orange color for the gradient.

Step 6

Draw orange eclipse for the leg. Rotate it a little on the right to fit in. Copy the leg and paste it in front (CTRL+C & CTRL+F).Change a color to little lighter, that you can distinguish it. With arrow keys place lighter circle a little up and left.

Step 7

Select the darker eclipse and apply Offset path using settings like on picture below.

Step 8

Select inner and light orange circle (Shift click on circles) and use Minus Front on Pathfinder palette. Color the resulting shape to white and lower the opacity to 35%.

Step 9

Select penguin leg and reflect it like in step 4. Again use Copy. Move copied leg to the right. Now our penguin has both legs.

Step 10

Let’s draw hands. Again draw black eclipse on the left side of penguin. Rotate it a little on the left to fit the “body”. Select Object – Arrange – Send to back to put the hands behind the body. Create copy of hand and put it on the right side of penguin.

Step 11

Well, we are almost finished. At the end let’s give our penguin a hair. Create another circle and color it black. Then draw another circle, a little larger. Use Minus Front on Pathfinder palette. We get a shape that look like a moon. Reflect that shape (Object – Transform – Reflect) and copy it.

Put the hair on penguin’s head and our job is done. Create some gradient for the background and your penguin is finished.

Finished:

That’s it folks for today. I hope u enjoy making penguin with 19 circles.

In this tutorial we will create a kind of furry smiley ball I once saw in the toy store. So I decided to draw it in Illustrator and share this tutorial with you.

Final image:

Below is how finished illustration will look like at the end of this tutorial.

Step 1

Create new document 500px by 350px. In first step draw a circle with Eclipse tool (L) and fill it with radial gradient. I use mix of yellow and orange color. Select Effect – Distort & Transform – Roughen with settings below.

Step 2

Create another ellipse for the eye. Color it white. Again select Effect – Distort & Transform – Roughen with settings below.

Step 3

Create small circle and color it black. Place it in within white ellipse. Use Pen tool (P) and draw triangle. Place it on the eyeball like shown on picture below. I painted triangle yellow just to notice the difference between circle and triangle. You can use any color you like.

Step 4

Select black circle and yellow triangle. Use “Minus front” from the Pathfinder panel (Window – Pathfinder) to finish our eye. Then select white and black part of the eye and group them together.

Step 5

Now we need to duplicate eye. Select Object – Transform – Reflect with settings below and press Copy. Move new eye to the right.

Step 6

Use Pen tool (P) and draw mouth. Color it black.

Step 7

With Pen tool (P) draw a shape of tongue like on picture below. Next select mouth and copy and past it in front (Ctrl+C & Ctrl+F). Select Mouth and shape of tongue and select Intersect from Pathfinder panel. Color tongue in dark red.

Step 8

Let’s draw the teeth. Again select Pen tool and draw shape similar to picture below.

Step 9

First select the mouth. Copy and past it in front (Ctrl+C and Ctrl+F). Select mouth and new shape and use Intersect from Pathfinder panel again. Color the new shape to white. This shape should look like teeth now.

Step 10

Draw small triangles on the teeth like on picture below. That will look like the smiley face has a little space between teeth. Select teeth and all triangles. Use Minus front from the Pathfinder panel that all little pieces became one piece.

Step 11

Create another circle for the nose. Color it orange. Again select Effect – Distort & Transform – Roughen with settings below.

Step 12

Create another circle in the middle of the previous circle. Color it brown. Again select Effect – Distort & Transform – Roughen.

Step 13

Let’s wrap all together. Draw rectangle over whole place on put it in back (Object –Arrange – Send to back). Use Gradient panel and create radial gradient with setting shown on picture below.

Finish:

Now our smiley face is done. Here is how it should look like. I hope you find this tutorial usefull. Let me know if you like it in the comments below.

Pathfinder function in Illustrator is very simple to use and yet very powerful. You can create more complex shapes or just put many shapes together. I find myself using this tool quite often.

In this tutorial I will take you through each option in Pathfinder panel with following examples to find this tool easy to use. To appear the Pathfinder panel choose Window – Pathfinder.

For this tutorial create new document and draw two shapes different colors. The result depends on which object is in front and which object is in back. To change the order of shapes use menu option Object – Arrange and chose submenu option or simply press left click on mouse, select Arrange and then submenu option.

Shape Modes (first row icons):

Unite:

Groups all selected shapes and create one combined shape. The new shape uses all styles (stroke and color) from the top shape.

Minus front:

This option cuts away all selected objects in front of the last object (most in back). New shape keeps the style but all top objects disappear leaving a hole.

Intersect:

This option cuts away all parts of the objects which don’t overlap. The new shape use style of the object that was on the top before intersection. All shapes of objects disappear after clicking the Expand button.

Exclude:

Removes all parts of the shapes that overlap. New shape unites what is left and becomes one single shape. The new shape keeps the style of the top overlapping object.

Divide:

Divide create two overlapping objects in separate objects. You can edit each piece individually.

Trim keeps all of the top objects intact while trimming all overlapping shapes out of the most bottom objects.

Merge does the same thing as Trim, with the exception that this command merges objects of the same color into a single shape. Other Objects leave as separate objects.

Crop:

Divide two overlapping objects into separate objects when they overlap. It only interacts with topmost object and bottommost object. New shape takes style of the topmost object.

Outline:

Outline breaks objects into separate line segments with no fill and colors.

This works with only two objects. It cuts the bottommost object from the topmost object. The new shape uses the fill and color of the topmost object.

This are very basic usee of Pathfinder options.

In Quicktut category I will present you short (few steps) tutorials or quick tips that will make your work with Illustrator easier and faster.

Final image:

Below is the final image of search bar we will be working today.

Step 1

Create new document 500px by 300px. Create a rectangle with Rectangle Tool (M). Color rectangle light grey (R=226 G=225 B=226) with no stroke.

Step 2

Create another smaller rectangle and fill it with white color (R=255 G=255 B=255) and grey (R=157 G=157 B=157) stroke. Place it on the previous rectangle like shown on image below.

Step 3

Now we will make a button. With rectangle tool create another small rectangle. Select Effect – Stylize – Rounded corners and write 5 px radius. Now select Object – Expand Appearance. Create blue gradient (from Gradient panel) button. For fill color I use blue colors on the picture below. Create 1 px stroke with (R=38 G=99 B=170) color

Step 4

Use type tool and write down text “Search”. Put it in the middle of blue rectangle. Write another text “Enter keyword” and put it in the white rectangle. Details and fonts I used are shown on picture below.

Step 5

In last step we will create magnifier glass. Draw small circle and small rectangle. Use 3px stoke (R=216 G=216 B=216). Select both and group them. On the stroke panel (Windows –Stroke) press Stroke cap icon, to make handle of magnifier glass rounded.
This is all for today’s quick tutorial. I challenge you to experiment with various colors on Search button. Thanks for sticking through tutorial!

Finish:
