Turbo Glass have been fortunate to be involved in this prestigious event/competition for over four years now by being one of the main sponsors for the tournament.

The Tiger Fisherman of the Zambezi (TFZ) will once again be held out of Olive Beadle fishing camp over the weekend of the 13th October 2018. Times and fishing dates to be confirmed.

This year is set to be something very special... It will be the 40th anniversary of the TFZ competition and as such, The River Club promise to make this competition one to remember. We are planning a means to get every angler who has won the competition back to fish once again in what will be an almighty challenge!

In 2016 there was an amazing feat achieved... Arthur Lucas managed to win a Piranha Legend boat on trailer with a 90hp Suzuki four stroke engine for catching the largest Tigerfish over 7.75kgs. His tiger fish came in at 10.215kgs! An awesome fish.

In 2018 Turbo Glass, once again will pledge an amazing prize to the TFZ competition in the hopes that we get a great turn out and a fantastic competition.

As you all are now well aware, Turbo Glass manufacture and supply some of the leading commercial cruise boats in Zimbabwe.

Yesterday (8th August 2013) we loaded one of the biggest Aqua Leisure 1660DD boats we have manufactured to date. With a maximum capacity of 100 people (subject to lake captains authority) and a double story, she certainly is a big ship! Click here for more in depth images of the loading process!

Because of the power lines running across Zimbabwe, we are only in a position to put the second roof on when we arrive at the destination. This boat is on the road to Victoria Falls as we speak!

Senior Tiger Fishermen of the Zambezi

Turbo Glass have been fortunate enough to be given the main sponsorship of this years Senior TFZ (Tiger Fishermen of the Zambezi) tournament.

This competition will be held from the 11th to the 13th of October 2013. It is a competition with huge history and has been running for decades now.

It is based at Olive Beadle fishing camp and is run by the TFZ committee. We fish for the elusive Tiger Fish and this year there is a twist...

Turbo Glass are putting a brand new Piranha Legend on a trailer up for grabs!!!

YES, we are offering this great fishing boat in Zimbabwe as a prize to the angler who catches the biggest Tiger Fish over 7.75kg's at the competition (Terms and conditions apply.) So... Enter the competition, catch a lunker and leave with a brand new boat! You all have nothing to lose!!

Commercial Rafts and Cruise Boats

At Turbo Glass we pride ourselves on producing high quality commercial rafts for sale in Zimbabwe.

With many companies and safari operators looking to offer a full package to include a sunset tour on the Zambezi they approach us with their ideas and needs. We then turn these into a reality!

From the 18 foot Bazooka capable of carrying eight people to the 52 foot Aqua Leisure 1660DD capable of carrying 80 passengers we have it all...

Many of the smaller rafts are used BOTH as sunset cruisers and for fishing as the spacious deck provides a safe and comfortable platform for multiple use. Our Bazooka 180 is capable of planing with anything over a 60hp engine and the Tomahawk 250 will plane with a 90hp or above. These are two of many commercial cruise boats for sale in Zimbabwe.

We have just sent a commercial raft for sale to Zambia for fishing on the Kafue River. She is fully equipped with a half roof, ten moveable chairs and a bar, for those sunset cruises on the Kafue.

I wish I could tell you more but for the meantime... We have NEARLY completed one of many (we hope) for a customer. She will be our prototype and we can't wait to show her off!!

Junior Tiger Fishing Tournament

Yes, the Junior TFZ (Tiger Fisherman of the Zambezi) is on again!!

The dates for this years competition are the 11th and 12th August 2013 inclusive.

The rules are simple, there are two possible ways to enter. As a junior, junior team (two anglers under the age of 18) or a junior, senior team (one angler under the age of 18 and one over.) In the event of a junior, junior team entering they HAVE to have a senior on the boat to skipper. This is mainly for safety reasons.

This annual competition has been going for decades now and being just after schools break up and of course, with the bank holidays tied up it makes for a fantastic trip for the whole family.

It is held at the TFZ headquarters (Olive Beadle) where there is plenty of accommodation for everyone, whether you take a lodge or camp. There are good amenities and ablutions alike. It is always well supported and last year was no exception. With over twenty teams entering and some really good fish caught by the youngsters.

What is really special is that every child wins a prize, whether they have caught a fish or not. This is fantastic for moral and it keeps the kids wanting to fish, very important in the day of tv's, video games and mobile phones. The outdoors is where we want our children and this competition certainly helps to keep them there!!

The River Club have already confirmed four teams for the tournament and are laying down the gauntlet. They want to win!!!

Being able to fish as far down as the Gwaai River and as high up as pump house there is plenty of water for you to roam to find the magnificent Tiger fish.

Turbo Charge 2013

And we are back...

Sunset through the wake

Firstly I wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the annual Turbo Charge. We had a total of 33 participants this year and with Zimbabwe’s economy being a bit hit and miss, this was a great achievement!

Oscar - Our House Boat

We left the Victoria Falls garage at around 7.30am with the intention of getting to Olive Beadle camp for no later than 2pm the same day... This was a great idea, until the ‘must stop’ 123km peg rest stop!! The fun truly began here. Games for the trip were introduced and everyone got to meet one and other with the first of many jokes being spread around.

From there we pushed on to Olive Beadle, most of us arriving at around 2.30pm or so and all of us in high spirits! River fever had certainly kicked in by now!!!

Our first night (as always) was a HUGE party and a bit of a blur. Super gobbies (men on their first ever Charge) were initiated and welcomed to the trip and the men who have done the Charge before buckled up and got prepared for the eight day ride!!

On Saturday morning (25^th May) Oscar, the house boat set off at exactly 6am. There were eleven people travelling on her and only two got up to help with the departure, all we heard from the bank was a crescendo of snoring!! The rest of the Turbo Charge didn’t get up so early... We launched all the boats, packed what was needed for the trip, had our safety lecture and waited for the water to get lumpy before setting off at around 10.30am. With ‘The Grand’ (a raft capable of topping 70kph!) and eight various Turbo Glass boats plus ‘Oscar’ the house boat, we had a very manageable number of boats this year.

Below is a map of Lake Kariba, I have marked with a red star our evening stop overs. Olive Beadle is approximately 30km’s West of Milibizi (as the crow flies) and was our start and finish point.

We topped up with petrol at Masumu River Lodge (thanks to Masumu for securing the petrol) and pushed on to Chete beach for our first night. We had to fix a couple of engines at this point and I am happy to say, this was the last of the niggles. As the smaller boats arrived at the beach, Oscar was mooring. Great timing I’d say! Dinner that night was beef stroganoff and RICE.

It is difficult to explain what goes on at night on the Turbo Charge... Other than to say we all join together, sit around a big fire and chat about the days events, past scenarios and generally reminisce, laugh and laugh some more!! You really have to be there!

The next morning we watched Oscar untie and slip off into the sunrise for what is and will always be the hardest day on the Charge... Today we cross the Sengwa basin...

To put this into perspective, the basin stretches to 35km’s wide and is about 75kms long... A HUGE piece of water. There are points in the crossing when you do not even have a land mark in eye sight to guide you and if the wind picks up, the trip can be quite hair raising! Now is the time I shall thank NyamiNyami... We had 15 minutes of choppy water the entire Turbo Charge, this made for a spectacular trip, not just in comfort but in fuel consumption and times it took us to do our daily travel. The calm water gave us a lot more time to relax and enjoy the mighty Zambezi and Lake Kariba.

We reached Nyamanbiri island safely as as we pulled in we found a Turbo Glass boat proudly showing a flag 'Welcome to Mashonaland'. Steve and Clive could not make the trip this year and still found the time to meet us for two days. Great effort lads! With a female elephant for company, we set up camp, made our fire and enjoyed a chicken casserole and RICE for dinner. An early rising for the guys showed evidence of Hyena spoor around the camp, it obviously came for a look and heard snoring and vanished! As too did the elephant, we didn’t see her again...

A warm welcome

We left Nyamanbiri early enough on Monday 27^th May to ‘nip’ across the water to Tashinga. This is where, in 2010 a Turbo Charger got mauled by a lioness. It is our tradition to stop there every year to toast a friend. Before you ask questions, Andre (the lion tamer) is fine, still lives in Zimbabwe and still enjoys the bush like the rest of us, it was an unfortunate incident but at least we did not lose him.

From Tashinga we passed a regatta of sailboats (I didn’t count them but perhaps fifty) making their way towards Bumi Hills, an amazing sight on such big water! We then made an impromptu pit stop to Spurwing Island, a fantastic lodge and camp where we sat down on proper chairs and had cubed ice in our fizzy drinks for the first time in four days. Thank you to Clive (shareholder at Spurwing) and Steve for this kind offer. We pressed on to Gache Gache from there where we would spend our next two nights in comfort.

With Famous Grouse and sodas waiting for us on the point, this was the start of what can only be described as an EPIC two days with Gache Gache Lodge. Thank you again to Ray & Pat Townsend and team. You will never cease to amaze us with your hospitality, kindness and FOOD!!! Please do look at Gache for a holiday, it is truly awesome!

On Wednesday 29^th May, we filled up our boats with petrol for the return journey, waved goodbye to Gache and headed off back up the lake.

As our stops at Nyamanbiri and Chete were so successful on the way up we decided to use these two points for our return leg this year. Lovely sandy beaches, a safe mooring spot for all the boats and a familiar destination to return to were the main reasons for this. With the lake being so high it was difficult to find decent beaches to accommodate us all. At Nymanbiri we ate Impala curry and RICE and at Chete beach we ate oxtail stew and RICE... Can you see where I am going here? NO MORE RICE!!!

Thank you to Hugh and Billy for the lesson on how not to cook rice!! They can cook a good RADZA though!

Roast beef joint for snacks

With the weather as good as it was we managed to spend an entire day on a beach where we sat under umbrellas, ate lovely snacks and even managed to cook a roast beef joint. The games and laughter here was just epic! What a great day... We did have a small problem with bees when it came time to leave and clear up all our litter - all part of the adventure I suppose!

With the trip drawing to a close, our final push was from Chete island, back to Masumu to top up our petrol and then to push through to Olive Beadle. We all did this in the same manner as a naughty school kid having to go to the headmaster’s office... Slowly and using every excuse in the book to stall!! But eventually, we were all safely back at our final destination. Our boats back on their trailers and vehicles packed for the long drive home...

Our final night is always full of thanks... Thanks to the participants who, despite the situation in our beloved country always manage to make every Turbo Charge different and FULL of laughter. Thanks to the various staff at Olive Beadle, Spurwing, Gache Gache and Masumu for putting up with us and helping make the trip even more comfortable, thanks to ABJ Engineering for transporting the petrol we needed for the journey, Rusty Hatton from ‘Up North’ in Botswana for sponsoring caps and of course, thanks for always clearing up litter and leaving our spots just as we found them. Last but not least TURBO GLASS... For twenty three years your support and efforts in organising and holding these trips has not gone un-noticed. Everyone is very appreciative of the dedication you show, not only for the Turbo Charge but for the boating industry in general in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.

Yes...

We are at it again. On Friday the 24th of May 32 men will meet at the Victoria Falls garage at 6am eagerly awaiting our 23rd annual TURBO CHARGE.

With 15 trucks and boats attending, this is always a great eye opener on the roads of Zimbabwe. We all leave Bulawayo together and drive in convoy to Olive Beadle where our journey begins. We are fortunate enough to be able to leave from the river this year as the water level is so high there is little chance of weeds and debris blocking our path.

With only a satellite phone for emergency communication and of course our ship to shore radios to help us on our way, this trip is all about getting away from the world and having what can only be described as a monumental recovery of the soul!

We are lucky to have Oscar once again this year and she certainly provides great comfort and respite from the harsh African sun. With four Piranhas, two wolves, three Coyotes a Tomahawk and the big raft going, we have certainly covered all bases for the trip.

So... We leave from Olive Beadle on Saturday morning and head to Chete island where we spend our first night on the beach, around a fire with the stars staring down on us, we then leave the next morning and cross the infamous Sengwa basin to an Island called Nyamanbiri for our second night. Then it is off the the fantastic lodge Gache Gache for two nights of civilised accommodation, hot showers and proper beds! The return journey is always a surprise so I won't add anything in the blog as to give it away!

Anyone who is lucky enough to own a Turbo Glass boat is eligible to attend this annual event and trust me when I say this, it is not to be missed!! We have people on this trip who have done it all 23 times and most men going are people who have been before and do not want to miss out! If you own a Turbo Glass boat and wish to attend in 2014, now is a good time to book a spot as we can't afford to get too big due to safety reasons on the water!

Fishing Raft

At Turbo Glass not only do we build single hull boats but we have a fantastic array of rafts too. Recently we built and finished a Bazooka 180 for a client who has two young children and enjoy fishing alot!

With this in mind, we built the raft around certain specifications, safety being a priority. The client was so impressed with the fact that so long as his ideas did not compromise the structure or safety of the vessel we would accommodate them! We have always worked with the simple goal that what ever boat you require, we will build it for you. It is your boat and your money being spent, we want you to have what you want!

The Bazooka 180 can come either as a twin mounted raft or a single mount. In this particular case we fitted an 85hp Yamaha engine to the raft, with devastating effect!! On the lake test at Olive Beadle fishing camp on the Zambezi, with four people on board we got the raft on the plane and using a GPS system recorded 50.23kph!!! Not bad for a raft I'd say!

The Bazooka 180 is the perfect fishing boat for the lakes and rivers of Zimbabwe, with its' spacious deck and amazing stability it will be hard to beat. Couple this with the fact you can reach fantastic speeds to rival smaller fishing boats, there is no fishing spot you can't reach in a good time!

Turbo Charge 2013

Yes... We are at it again!!!

Turbo Glass is about to undergo its twenty third boat run from Olive Beadle on the Zambezi all the way to Gache Gache on the East end of lake Kariba.

This year has a really nice twist. Not only are we using Oscar (the house boat) but we have two other Turbo Glass rafts coming with us!

Basically, if you own a Turbo Glass boat you are in with a chance of being invited on this auspicious annual event!

But a raft will slow the trip down I hear you say... Not these rafts! We have a Tomahawk 250 with twin 90hp engines on the back capable of topping 75kph and the Bazooka 180 with a single mount 85hp which will do speeds in excess of 50kph. Easily fast enough to keep up with the pack.

We have a fantastic bunch of 'men' going on this trip, some having never missed a Turbo Charge and some going on their first ones... Either way, people literally count down from 364 days till they can set off on the water again for an ever changing and always surprising trip of a life time!!

Lion Kill in Kariba town

Hi all.

A more sombre blog today unfortunately.

We have just had word of another Lion attack in Kariba town which has resulted in someone losing their life...

Please take a moment to read the information below which came to Turbo Glass via email and pass it on to anyone you may know who lives in the town or surrounding areas.

KARIBA ANIMAL WELFARE FUND TRUST IN CONJUNCTION WITH ZIMBABWE PARKS & WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

Further to the LION KILL ALERT sent out below this update, on Tuesday March 5th .

A man was found late Tuesday afternoon who suffered the same fate in the same area but it is believed this incident happened on Monday.

Parks and Wildlife are patrolling during the course of Tuesday night.in the various areas in Kariba that residents claim to have seen Lion

Some reports are 2 Lioness and other are 5 lions.

Again due to the thickness of the bush from the rains, it is very difficult and dangerous to find where the Lion are

Please note that this area is a National Park area with Wild Life and although this kind of incident is unheard of within the town area, as we have just experienced, it can happen.

Wild animals can cover vast areas so one cannot think this is Mahombekombe side, the Heights is clear – nowhere is clear when there is Wild Life

PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE BUSH and pass the message on to everyone you know and your employees to STAY OUT OF THE BUSH

We will put out an email advising if Parks and Wildlife have managed to locate and deal with the lion, as soon as we are notified.

KAWFT - URGENT ALERT - LION KILL

We have confirmed with Parks & Wildlife that a Lion has killed a Lady near the Mahombekombe Primary School today/Tuesday 5 March

2 people were in the bush and the lion attacked the Lady.

Parks and Wildlife only saw the tail end of the lion and are unsure if it was on its own or if there are more and because of the thick bush could not see if it was a male or female

PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE BUSH and pass the message on to everyone you know and your employees to STAY OUT OF THE BUSH...

We have nearly completed the decking layout and have finished the floor for the new boat. She is looking GREAT! A month ago or so we asked the public to help in naming our new vessel and we have been inundated with some great options. Click here for the previous story.

What an exciting start to the year Turbo Glass has had!

The wait...

Not only are we building a new prototype BUT we have also been approached by the Tiger Fisherman of the Zambezi committee to help with a prize for this years TFZ tournament.

We haven't held anything back!!! We have decided to sponsor a Piranha Legend 160 on a trailer as a prize for anyone who brings in the biggest tiger over a certain weight (to be decided) during the competition!!!

With a new year comes an exciting NEW BOAT!!

Yes, we are in the process of creating a brand new vessel, one that will dominate the waters as a universal rig used for all types of fishing. We have created this with the different dams, rivers and lakes in mind and have come up with a design that will best suit every fisherman, no matter where he or she would like to use the boat.

Designed to be easy to tow, simple to launch and comfortable to fish off, we know we are onto a winner for creating the best all species boat in Zimbabwe.

What we are asking you, the general public (wherever you are in the world!) is for a name for our new boat... At Turbo Glass we have been quite strict in following two simple ''boat naming'' rules. ALL of our boats are named either after a gun (Derringer, Bazooka, Colt, Maxim etc) or an animal (Piranha, Wolf, Coyote etc) For a look at a range of our boats we already manufacture please click here.
