From wellness classes to mission trips, TURBOCAM offers benefits from A to Z

TURBOCAM reimburses the Tostados and other employee running enthusiasts for their athletic event entry fees up to $100 per year. This benefit is used by many employees who participate in local races like the Peeper 5k and the James Foley Freedom Run, and other events such as powerlifting meets.

Staying healthy at work
To help achieve their fitness goals and stay in shape for upcoming races, the Tostados use TURBOCAM’s exercise facilities. These facilities, which are open for the employee and their families to use at any time, include gyms in both Barrington buildings. These gyms offer treadmills, a weight rack, exercise bikes, rowing machines, free weights, exercise balls, and more. At the Route 9 location, TURBOCAM employees enjoy the indoor squash and basketball courts, while the Route 125 location offers employees a soccer/baseball field behind the building and a walking trail.

Free exercise classes are offered at the TURBOCAM gyms. Seasonal exercise classes provide employees with many activities from which to choose. Trainers from Integrated Fitness of Dover offer a variety of classes, including kickboxing, powerlifting, and boot camps, giving employees opportunities to learn new forms of exercise and have fun while doing it. TURBOCAM also brings in an on-site physical therapist and chiropractor, thus making it more cost effective and convenient for employees to stay healthy.

Through initiatives like TURBOGap (TURBOCAM Global Apprenticeship Program) and other training programs, TURBOCAM sends employees to its plants around the world. By training employees to use consistent processes when making a part, TURBOCAM ensures consistency and uniformity in the finished product, no matter where the part is manufactured. Scholarships available
Scholarships for mission trips enable TURBOCAM to fulfill part of its mission, “…supporting Christian service to God and people,” even in the furthest reaches of the world.

Accounts Payable Clerk Michelle Sorensen, a scholarship recipient, was able to travel to Tanzania to visit a small orphanage. “I was on the board of a nonprofit called Eastern Gate Ministries International (EGMI) that fully funded an orphanage in Missungwi, a little village in Tanzania, Africa. Members of the board would go annually to see the children, work on a project, and check on things. The kids won my heart as soon as I heard about them and I just had to go! I knew TURBOCAM gave a lot to charity, so I inquired if they would donate towards my trip, and they did!”

Upon arriving in Tanzania, Michelle was instantly enamored with the children and the community EGM was supporting. “We could see the impact that we made on the children,” said Michelle. “They loved being with us, just spending time together, and trying to speak to us. They made little pictures and different crafts to give us as remembrances of them.”

While there, Michelle and the team built a large garden in order to sustain the orphanage with food and leave some to sell for profit and to benefit the community.

Tuition Reimbursement 
With an approved education plan, full-time employees pursuing degrees or credentials related to TURBOCAM operations or taking related courses lasting more than five days are eligible to be reimbursed for the cost of tuition and books (certain guidelines must be followed).

In the past, many employees have taken advantage of tuition assistance to complete certificates along with associate’s, bachelor’s, and even master’s degrees in subjects, including business and engineering! 

These are just a few of the many benefits offered to TURBOCAM employees. Whether it is helping people make a difference for others, or trying to improve themselves, TURBOCAM supports growth in all aspects of its employees’ lives.

The fundraising idea started last year after the 7th grade class read a book called “A Long Walk to Water,” the story of a South Sudanese girl named Nya, who fetches water from a pond that is a two-hour walk from her home. She makes this trip two times a day, every day. It is also the story of Salva Dutt; how he survived the Sudanese Civil War as a refugee and made it to the USA, where he received an education and started the foundation Water for South Sudan. This foundation builds wells in small villages allowing a community to grow around it, bringing the people lives to live, not live to survive.

The BMS 7th grade students were so moved by the story they started their own group SSS or Saving for South Sudan, and after one year have raised all of the $15,000 required to build a well! It is impressive to see that the youth in our schools would have the vision and were willing to take action for a project of this magnitude.

Recently, Kyle Widman, a BMS 7th grade teacher, asked for a volunteer (Brad Crannell, TURBOCAM Research Scientist, was asked and he said yes.) to come and speak to the school about water filtration and the water mission work that TURBOCAM has been doing for years through the TurboSPAN project. Over the years, TurboSPAN, largely funded by the TURBOCAM cafeteria charity boxes, has designed, built, and installed systems in over 140 locations, including schools, orphanages, and rural communities.

The two ideas meshed perfectly to offer a class on water issues around the world. The Water for South Sudan project is providing water where none is available. The TurboSPAN project is filtering available water that otherwise would not be safe to drink.

The students came to understand why the wells at their homes provide clean water. The earth acts as a giant sand filtration system that cleans the water as it works its way through (Stage 1 in the TurboSPAN system mimics this). During the drinking water class, the students filtered contaminated water through 0.45 µm syringe filters, and quickly learned that filtering water is hard to do. It is difficult to push the water through the filter. Such a very fine filter will take out most bacteria, including cholera, which can be a problem in South Sudan and other places with poor sanitation. Even with all of that work, the students’ filters did not take out metals like lead or arsenic present in some contaminated waters. For that, they passed the water through a chemically reactive media (activated carbon mixed in a sand filtration column).

The class ended by challenging the students with this question: “Why did Jack and Jill go UP the hill?” The simple answer we all give is: “to fetch a pail of water,” but the story is much more than that. In agricultural societies, surface run-off water contaminates wells that are located at the bottom of a hill. A well at the top of the hill provides clean drinking water for Jack and Jill.

Bressoud and Graham gave a presentation on what it means to be on mission while at work. Bressoud described how many companies send people out in the world to go on mission trips, but we are executing our mission work inside these four walls. He told the attendees, “Mission is our business.”

“It was an exciting chance to spark a change in perspective,” remarked Graham, “To widen the imagination of a whole batch of future professionals to see their office, their work, their company as the place God has specifically put them to love Him and love their coworkers and customers in the name of Jesus. That ‘ordinary work’ and participating in Christ’s redemption of the earth not only can mix, but were made to be one, and by Christ’s power we can meaningfully do this.”

This will be an ongoing chance for TURBOCAM to share its unique position as a company that exists for good.

Norsk Titanium proudly displays the first additive integrally bladed rotor (IBR) at the Farnborough International Airshow. The IBR is a collaboration between Norsk Titanium (Norsk), The University of Notre Dame Turbomachinery Laboratory (NDTL), Pratt & Whitney and TURBOCAM International as they develop and test additively manufactured turbomachinery components. This collaboration will focus on exploring the applicability of Norsk’s Rapid Plasma Deposition™ (RPD™) material to turbomachinery applications. As part of this effort, NDTL will test an additively manufactured integrally bladed rotor (IBR) produced and inspected to meet the applicable quality specifications used in Pratt & Whitney’s current turbomachinery components. The team has completed the initial phase of testing, with TURBOCAM International conducting machining trials of Norsk’s RPD™ material, and Pratt & Whitney successfully inspecting the material to the same specification as forged turbomachinery components.

As part of upgrading TURBOCAM’S capability to test aerospace parts, the company’s governing training and process procedures have been updated. This will allow the company to begin testing more customer parts in-house to reduce handling, shipping, and lead time necessary to meet customers’ requirements. These procedures are available upon request.

“We started PT in the commercial sector 20 years ago,” said Dana Wilson, TURBOCAM NDT Responsible Level III. “Aerospace work had to be sent out to qualified NDT vendors. Now in 2018, TURBOCAM’s NDT department is focusing on the aerospace sector. The equipment in the photos above was refurbished to process aerospace work in-house.

“Our NDT employees were trained to National Aerospace Standards improving our capability to test aerospace products. It effectively shortens the overall NDT lead-time from a week or two, to one day. One of our goals for this year is to maintain a 24-hour turnaround on normal work.”

According to New Futures, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that advocates, educates, and collaborates to improve the health and wellness of all New Hampshire residents, “Drug and alcohol abuse cost New Hampshire $2.36 billion in 2014 in lost productivity, health care, and strains to the criminal justice system.” Part of that loss is in the number of candidates from which to choose.

Shining Light School, Pune - The Shining Light School held a very successful sports day on 12th January, 2018 at a nearby public park. Thank you for your prayers. Standards 1 to 4 were divided into four houses and each house participated in march-past, long run, 100 meters run, relay, and so on. There were activities even for parents and teachers. At the end, medals and certificates were distributed to the winners. Parents enjoyed watching their children participate in various activities.

The Ambassador Week brings together 550 female 8th and 9th graders with over 90 tech women volunteers and 150 volunteering educators. Matched in their geographic area, students have meaningful interactions with female technologists who are there to share their experiences and give career advice.

“The ambassadors came from varied backgrounds,” said Naomie, “from engineers, to a snow scientist, to an online consultant. The students had an opportunity to ask questions at the end and mingle with us. It was a great opportunity for us to encourage the girls to pursue the STEM field.”

“I am happy to see so many young women interested in the STEM field,” commented Naomie. “Women make up only about one-quarter (25.8%) of those in STEM occupations¹. That is up almost 2% from 2009.². That is very exciting!”

Approximately 125, 8th grade girls attended the event, held at the Portsmouth Library. A panel of seven ambassadors shared their experiences in the STEM field, which encouraged the attendees to consider entering the STEM field in the future.

The AS9100D designation, considered the aerospace industry gold standard for quality assurance, is offered only to organizations that develop and produce aviation, space, and defense products while demonstrating strict adherence to quality, reliability, and safety standards. It ensures that the company has passed rigorous evaluations of its manufacturing processes to achieve the standard of quality required.

The update of AS9100 from revision C to D includes the full text of ISO 9001:2015. In addition to aligning the structure of the aviation, space, and defense requirements to the new structure of ISO 9001:2015, the following key changes were implemented:

• Product Safety was added in a new clause and in other areas
• Counterfeit Parts Prevention was added in a new clause and in other areas (this was already in place in the AS9110 and AS9120 standards)
• Risk clause was merged with the new ISO 9001 risk requirements along with an increased emphasis on risks in operational processes
• Awareness clause was added with reinforced requirements for awareness of individual contribution to product and service quality and safety along with ethical behavior
• Human Factors are included as a consideration in nonconformity management and corrective action
• Configuration Management was clarified and improved to address stakeholder needs

“Achieving the AS9100D certification is part of our ongoing effort to develop and reinforce our existing ISO quality systems in support of our customer base,” said Savio Carvalho, TIPL General Manager & Director. “We recognize a growing demand in the aerospace industry and have taken the necessary steps to become an implicitly trusted manufacturer of these products and parts. Thanksgiving often brings up pictures of harvests and celebrations. I typically travel to India and Nepal in October or November, and see fields of rice and sugar cane ripening. Sometimes I witness the cutting, the gathering up, and the threshing of the harvest. It can be a time of great celebration, or deep disappointment.

The celebration comes when the work of our hands has been a success, when months of labor and investment are blessed with abundance. But I have also seen the disappointment as when a few years ago a flood suddenly rose and destroyed the harvested crop that was drying in the fields. When we visited a week after the flood receded, many people were trying to salvage the crop, but it had already rotted. The promise of plenty had disintegrated in front of their eyes.

We have enjoyed our work with you this year. Thank you for partnership with us, which has been a big part of our success. Our hope and prayer is that you find God’s blessing on the work of your hands, so that you can find rest and enjoyment in it.

We greet you at this time of Thanksgiving with a handmade card from the Nepal Leprosy Mission, bringing you Jesus’ words of hope and promise: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” The image on the card is of an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to shepherds who were tending their flocks at night. “Fear not,” said the angel, “for I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Together with the New Hampshire Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NHMEP), NEBM teamed up to create an engaging format aimed at the younger generation—the workforce of tomorrow. STUFF featured profile pages for schools who wish to highlight their manufacturing-related programs and facilities. This special publication also includes stories that highlight young workers in advanced manufacturing and how they are evolving their careers. There are also stats on average wages in the industry and features that show the economic impact of manufacturing in New Hampshire’s economy.

In TURBOCAM’s profile, the company highlighted Tiffany Towning, a young machinist who has been advancing her career. She was one of a select group who was chosen to attend TurboGAP, a global apprenticeship program in Goa, India.

“I am grateful for the many opportunities I have received in my short time here,” said Towning. “Being featured in STUFF is very flattering. It is nice to be recognized for hard work and it feels good to know that my contribution will help recruit young people who have a passion for the type of work we do here.”

All high schools and colleges in the state, select middles schools with career development programs, and CEOs and senior executives at all manufacturing firms across the state will receive a copy of the magazine. Manufacturing industry partners will distribute STUFF and the publication will be available at key industry events throughout the year.

Nurses’ Training Program, Salem - Our trainees participated in a Dengue awareness program held by JMHA, Salem. They performed skits to educate the public on how to fight Dengue. Among the trainees was Emőke Nagy, head of the lab at TES-RO. “The lab tasks were all new to me when I began the training, but I gained the experience I needed by working side-by-side with wonderful, knowledgeable people,” said Emőke. “Now that we have launched the facility in Acăţari, the training still goes on. Since we’ve set up a new system, all kinds of questions have been raised on how to find the best manufacturing procedures. We are working through those and are keeping our goal in front of us — to provide quality products to our customers.”

Recently, we started production and it went very smoothly. TES-RO provides high volumes of TX1 surface treatment (TX1) to turbocharger flow control rings. The TX1 treatment is a unique thermal diffusion surface transformation technology that improves the toughness of steel without creating brittleness. These improved characteristics transform lower cost materials so they either match or outperform more costly exotic alloys in high-wear applications.

Besides treating turbocharger flow control rings, TES-RO treats dies for the aluminum HPDC (high pressure die casting) industry in the European market.

For tooling in high pressure aluminum die casting, TX1 has the following advantages:

• Resists Soldering – Chemistry prevents free iron reaction with aluminum and complexity of chemistry prevents growth of iron aluminum compounds
• Reduced Heat Checking –Added toughness by increased plasticity and tensile strength and smooth hardness gradient
• Minimized Erosion – Wear resistance to high velocity abrasive particles
• No dimension change

On Wednesday, April 19, TURBOCAM employees Naomie Clark and Giacomo Graniello won first place for their projects at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Symposium (ISE). In their 14th year, ISE celebrates the scholarly achievements and research of hundreds of undergraduates. Each year, students present their research through posters, demonstrations, and oral presentations. Students also answer questions from a synergistic mix of fellow students, family members, faculty, administration, industry and alumni. Presentations represent a multitude of disciplines, many interdisciplinary, including earth, environmental, biological, computer and physical sciences, civil, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, mathematics and statistics, physics, and chemistry.

Over the past few years, the mechanical engineering department at UNH has teamed up with other departments to participate in the URC (Undergraduate Research Conference) ISE Symposium. Rob Bujeaud, VP of Engineering, has been judging mechanical engineering senior design projects at UNH for several years.

“I love getting on campus to see what the engineering and technical students are doing," said Bujeaud. "Their creativity, enthusiasm, and passion give me great hope for the future of engineering. They are working hard to solve real-world problems and to better the world around them."

Clark’s team won for their project relating to ocean engineering. Clark is a past intern and will start full time at TURBOCAM this month. Their project was called the Poseidon Project: Portable SONAR Device for Ocean Floor Mapping.

"I greatly enjoyed working on the project with my team this year,” said Clark. “My favorite part was learning how to machine the parts and assemble the system. I learned a lot about SONAR systems, as well as the design process as a whole. I am so proud of my team for putting in the time and effort necessary to create a winning project.”

Graniello won in the industrial category. He is a machine operator at TINC B1 who will start as a TAPS engineer when he graduates this month. His team’s project was titled, "Method of Non-Contact Machining by Means of Electrochemical Turning.” TURBOCAM was a sponsor of the project.

“Being involved in an endeavor where TURBOCAM was involved and it counted as a senior project, was definitely an awesome experience," said Graniello. "The project's development was fun and challenging, and it allowed me to learn the principals of ECM (Electrochemical Machining) as an engineer and machinist. Designing such a complex machine was definitely a team effort, which was made possible thanks to TURBOCAM who sponsored the project."

The ISE Symposium features student research with science, engineering and math perspectives, giving students an opportunity to interact with peers and gain professional experience presenting research. The program includes a poster session, remarks from University leaders, and an awards ceremony. The ISE Planning Committee identifies judges and creates a judging schedule. Each project is judged by three to five judges who may be an academic from within the discipline, an academic from another discipline, or from industry. Participants are scheduled for ten minutes with their judges to stand in front of their poster and make a brief oral presentation providing an overview of their research project and answering questions.

The discussion centered on the Guard’s preparedness for live combat. In cases of war, the Guard may be called into active duty, and they need to be prepared. Currently, the Guard trains for 39 days each year. That number may be increased to 120. “Right now, if I was to call on a Guard unit, it would be 120 days before in conscience I can say, ‘They are ready to go to war,'" said General Milley on “Military.com.”  Also discussed was the impact the increase in annual training days might have on employers. In addition, there was discussion regarding how the military and employers may be able to work together to support employees and their families during deployments.

Governor Sununu gave the keynote address and said that New Hampshire has a huge workforce but because of substance misuse, there are thousands of people who are unemployable. But, there are reasons for hope in New Hampshire. “We are leading this country, we really are,” said Sununu. “We are now seen as being on the cutting edge of innovation when it comes to all the different aspects of recovery, treatment, and prevention. Other states are looking to us to see what we’re doing, which is an exciting opportunity.”

“We’ve started to change the conversation at TURBOCAM from a policy driven one to a health and safety conversation,” said Hanson, “because that is what it’s really about―safety. “We treat every situation individually and have had those tough conversations with employees, and they can go one of two ways. One, the person gets aggravated, denies everything, and you can tell they are not ready to admit they may have an issue, or you get the deflated look and immediately you know you have an opportunity to help them. This is the time to do outreach and offer support. You have a brief moment in time to extend help and you can save that employee’s job and help him keep supporting his family.”

Following the Legislative Breakfast, the Addiction Summit continued throughout the day and featured speakers, workshops, and optional naloxone (Narcan) training.

The C25K members range from walkers to beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners. Teammates support each other for 12 weeks, and have access to a certified coach and training program. This year, the participants are working with trainer Brandon Newbould. Brandon is a USATF Level-II coach with experience coaching a wide range of abilities and ages. Also helping out is Gary DeSmith, owner of Allegiant Physical Therapy in Durham. Gary is an experienced physical therapist who will be there to help prevent any injuries from starting (shin splits, knee and leg issues, etc.).

“We’re excited to increase the program this year from 8 to 12 weeks to help participants plan and set goals even beyond the C25K and Peeper,” commented Ben Geaslen, a TURBOCAM employee and one of the leaders of the C25K event. “Proceeds from the Peeper go to fund the Greater Barrington Chamber of Commerce’s (Chamber) scholarship program. Knowing our efforts are helping to fund high school seniors’ education, helps drive us to complete our personal goals.”

“After the Peeper, there is one week of rest,” said Coach Newbould. “Then there is an additional four weeks of after-work practices for those willing to take on the additional challenge of racing four more times over the summer – two shorter races, a ten-miler and a half-marathon in the fall.”

The C25K program is just one of the many wellness initiatives offered by TURBOCAM. The company has allocated money to wellness, and promotes things such as a smoke-free facility, an on-site gym, weight training classes, and an on-site chiropractor and physical therapist, just to name a few.

“TURBOCAM is excited to partner with ONE Voice to help bring awareness to our community about the opioid crisis,” said Pete Hanson, TURBOCAM Personnel Manager. “We felt compelled to offer this opportunity and are opening the doors to all who are interested in being a part of this movement in our communities. Anyone, whether they are a concerned citizen, family member, friend, law enforcement officer, medical personnel, educator, or public official who want to get involved, is invited to be there with us.”

Registration for the event opens at 6:00 p.m. and the presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. Former State Representative Joe Hannon will be offering perspective on how stigma affects the prevention, treatment, and recovery continuum, followed by education from ONE Voice on how the community can practice prevention and access treatment and recovery supports.

Alissa Cannon, the Substance Misuse Prevention Coordinator for ONE Voice, explained, “This kind of partnership between ONE Voice and TURBOCAM is exactly what we are hoping to foster in Strafford County. We want community members and businesses to know how important it is to focus on prevention strategies, but also offer solutions and best practices to give the maximum support to their employees who may have a substance use disorder, or who may be caring for a family member with a substance use disorder.

“The engagement of multiple stakeholders and sectors within a community is a great first step toward changing the norms and other contributing factors that influence a person’s decision to misuse drugs or alcohol. TURBOCAM and One Voice, together with the partnership of Chris Placy of Substance Free Workplace, have created the opportunity to begin bridging the gaps for access to information,” Cannon explained. Placy, who is the Executive Vice President of Substance Free Workplace, initiated the partnership between TURBOCAM and ONE Voice and said, “We all need to be a student of the disease of addiction.”

Those in attendance will have an opportunity to share about what they feel is happening in their community and offer suggestions to guide the response.

Gulbarga: The Christmas programme was held on the 30th of December with over 50 children and some 25 adults attending. Children had fun with various activities and games and the good news was shared. New Testaments were distributed, followed by a fellowship meal.

Everyone in the community is invited to help feed millions of starving children in the developing world. Through a partnership between Morgen Smith, a high school junior, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), and TURBOCAM, volunteers will prepare 100,000 life-saving meals at this MobilePack event.

The food comes prepared in three dried, fortified meal formulas, which will address the world’s main hunger needs. Each culturally-neutral meal packet contains 6-12 servings, depending on the food formula.

Community members can support this MobilePack by making a donation to cover meal costs, or by volunteering to package food at the event. Donations may be given immediately, and volunteer registration is available now. To donate or sign up to volunteer, click here. No walk-ins are allowed.

The AS9100C designation, considered the aerospace industry gold standard for quality assurance, is offered only to organizations that develop and produce aviation, space, and defense products while demonstrating strict adherence to quality, reliability, and safety standards. Mandie Taylor spoke with us before the event about TURBOCAM’s involvement. “This will be the second time we had a TURBOCAM team,” she said. “The last time TURBOCAM entered a team was three years ago.”

The 2016 team consisted of employees Neil Lightfoot, Terry Ayling, Peter Lasham and Rob Arnett. “This year,” Taylor continued, “the TURBOCAM giving committee pledged to match any money they raised up to the value of £1,500.00 (equivalent to around $1,974). All the money raised goes to charity.”

In addition to gaining a new home, the Post also earned the title of New Hampshire’s only American Legion “Post of Excellence.” Of 91 Posts in the state, Post 114 came out on top.

On June 15, TURBOCAM attended a Barrington Chamber Business After Hours (BAH) hosted by the Post at their new home. This was another opportunity for the community to stop by and view the new facility.

TURBOCAM, and other local businesses, sponsored the new hall allowing the Post to finish renovations. “Without sponsors like TURBOCAM, the Post would not be able to rent out the building, meet with members, and host events for groups such as the Cub Scouts,” said Liz Dorsett, TURBOCAM Communications and Media Specialist who attended the event. “TURBOCAM is very active in the community and sponsors various organizations and their work.”

Greater Barrington Chamber of Commerce held their Business After Hours at the American Legion Post 114 in Barrington

Local business professionals attended the BAH, exchanging business cards and local business news. Paul Silver, Post Commander, briefly described the organization and mission of the American Legion and invited local businesses to support veteran’s issues in the community and their workplaces. “I am very proud of the 83 members here,” said Silver. “A Post is not a building. It is the group of people who make it what it is.”

Leading the NDTL are Joshua Cameron, Assistant Professor of Research, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the director of the new laboratory, and Scott Morris, a professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering and the lab’s research director. The lab currently employs 37 people and will eventually employ about 60.

“The high profile event was very well attended by the NDTL staff, Notre Dame University academic/business officials, Indiana/South Bend politicians, facility design-build contractors, NDTL customers, press corps, and partners like us,” said Eric Vollnogle, TURBOCAM’S Technical Business Manager. He and Mike Ambrogio, Product Development Manager, represented TURBOCAM at the event..

“Josh Cameron and his staff of research scientists expressed deep appreciation for TURBOCAM’s attendance, and for our continued support as a key manufacturing collaborator,” continued Vollnogle. “Josh stated that this new state-of-the-art facility will create great opportunities for TURBOCAM to partner with Notre Dame to service their growing customer list. Those expressing an intention to perform development work at NDTL include many major aerospace and power OEMs like GE, Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney, Siemens, NASA, AFRL, ONR, and Honeywell, just to name a few.”

The Team is made up primarily of Cedarville University graduating mechanical engineering seniors. They are involved because of a senior design project, and two faculty advisors. Alumni Joel Dewhurst, Manufacturing Engineer, and Joel Ingram, TAPS Product Engineer, were on the 2014 Team and are the liaisons between this year’s team and TURBOCAM.

“Joel Ingram and I made the parts for the boat that will be racing in the Netherlands,” said Joel Dewhurst. “We made the rear hydrofoils and the actuators for them as well as the pod for the drivetrain that houses the gearbox, and serves as the attachment point for the rear hydrofoils.”

The boat is solar electric and is powered by a 1750W solar array that charges a battery pack. Last year, the fastest solar boat did the 200 kilometer race in just over seven hours.

“TURBOCAM and Cedarville University have an ongoing relationship,” said Mark Overmyer, Director of Organization Development. “Five of seven new engineers that started this spring were from Cedarville.”

Several times each year, TURBOCAM sponsors youth activities to encourage and support local students who are pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. Those young people have been involved in activities relating to robotics, manufacturing technology, and submarine building, just to name a few.

For many, this was the culmination of the Couch to 5K & Beyond (C25K) program sponsored by TURBOCAM. New this year, the company added two locations to the C25K group – Charleston, South Carolina and Fareham, England!

Nancy Webb, TURBOCAM ERP Software Analyst I and C25K organizer, has led the Barrington team for four years. “It has been an honor to represent Team TURBOCAM,” said Webb. “The first year I got involved we only had 12 team members. This year we had almost 100!

“The C25K members range from walkers to beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners,” continues Webb. “We support each other for eight uplifting weeks, and have a certified coach and training program. The program starts in March and we train to run the Peeper in May.

“The most amazing part of the program is that after eight weeks, many will go on—hence the word “Beyond” in the title of the program. It is amazing because many people will keep moving forward with the lifestyle changes they have made. Staying the course is easier when you know you have many supporters to help you with your journey.”

As they did last year, the Barrington C25K participants had the opportunity to work with trainer Greg Gephart, a seasoned runner and coach with over 30 years of experience. Also helping out was Gary DeSmith, owner of Allegiant Physical Therapy in Durham. Gary is an experienced physical therapist who was there to help prevent any injuries from starting (shin splits, knee and leg issues, etc.).

“We’re so excited each year to be part of this wonderful event,” commented Webb. “Proceeds from the Peeper go to fund the Greater Barrington Chamber of Commerce’s (Chamber) scholarship program. Knowing our efforts are helping to fund high school seniors’ education, helps drive us to complete our personal goals.”

TURBOCAM UK and TURBOCAM Charleston also got in on the action. This was the first year they have held their own C25K event – the UK had 14 team members and Charleston had 3. Their goals were to run/walk a race on the same day as the Peeper, and they did! The UK entered a recreational park race. Family and friends came out to support the group and the event ended with a potluck luncheon. Charleston ran in the “Run for Change” 5K in Moncks Corner, SC.

The Chamber’s goal is to help fund local high school seniors heading to college or those students already enrolled in college. Proceeds from the race fund these scholarships and have helped the Chamber select two students every year who earn $1,000 towards the college of their choice. In addition, one returning recipient will receive a $500 award to help fund their current schooling.

The C25K program is just one of the many wellness initiatives offered by TURBOCAM. The company has allocated money to wellness, and promotes things such as a smoke-free facility, an on-site gym, weight training classes, and an on-site chiropractor and physical therapist, just to name a few.

On May 12, a group of physics, robotics, and programming high school students from Portsmouth Christian Academy (PCA) toured TURBOCAM’s B1 facility. They were interested in seeing real-life applications of some of the class material they are studying as well as getting exposure to the manufacturing industry. They witnessed the automation that is used at TES and TAPS, and learned about the machining process. This will help them in their decision-making process when it comes to pursuing further education in the field.

The class was split up into two groups, one led by Chris Goepfert, Software Development Engineer and a 2006 PCA graduate, and another led by Nick Landry, Product Engineer. “The students showed a lot of interest in the technology and work that we do here,” said Goepfert. “It’s great to see so much enthusiasm about manufacturing and automation at their age.”

Marian Noronha, TURBOCAM President, is an advocate of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve’s (ESGR) mission, and actively recruits National Guard and Reservists for employees. The company culture honors the importance of the family, and Mr. Noronha has declared that deployed employee families will be fully supported. TURBOCAM International is offering a Machining Boot Camp 2016. This is a fully paid 6-week machine operator training course. Candidates will be selected for the Boot Camp following an interview selection process at the end of April. The Boot Camp starts on May 16, giving those chosen a chance to give a notice if needed.

The Boot Camp will be intense, so only serious candidates should apply. Participants who graduate from this program will be offered a full-time job at TURBOCAM with tremendous career and advancement opportunities. While in classroom training, you will be working on first shift. Following the classroom training, you must be willing to work any shift to accommodate staffing needs. See below for the hours of each shift:

• 1st Shift: 7 a.m.–3 p.m.
• 2nd Shift: 3–11 p.m.
• 3rd Shift: 11 p.m.–7 a.m.

“Our recent graduates came onboard together and received almost one year of training in just eight weeks,” said Marcus Mann, Coordinator of Employee Growth & Development. “This approach gave the new operators solid basic skills. The initial results are very positive.”

Classes will be held at the TURBOCAM Education Center in Rochester. Some of the classes to be offered include Machining I, GD&T, Basic and Advanced Measuring, Blueprint Reading, Math, SPC, and 5S.

• No jobs lost in 2009; built inventory for six months until the market recovered.
• Making several rows of vanes on a family of new passenger jet engines.
• Partnering with Water Missions International of Charleston, SC to be the first responders in the massive earthquakes in Nepal in April-May, and providing clean water to a refugee camp of 12,000 in Kathmandu, as well as in many other towns and villages.
• All bills paid on time.

Jesus said: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” Matt 13:44

The Valve Company Has a New Electric Meter – For over 15 years, the Valve Company shared the electric meter with the neighboring factory and were paying 50 percent of the electricity bill. The supply came through a neighboring factory. In November 2014 they demanded that the Valve Company pay 80 percent of the total bill. We had no option but to pay this amount.

Around the same time, we approached the electricity board and asked them to give us a separate meter. We were promised a new connection within 15 days, but for several months we had to visit and plead with them to install a fresh meter.

“Achieving the AS9100C certification is part of our ongoing effort to develop and reinforce our existing ISO quality systems in support of our customer base,” said Rob Taylor, Managing Director. “We recognize a growing demand in the aerospace industry and have taken the necessary steps to become an implicitly trusted manufacturer of these products and parts. TEL welcomes any challenge presented to us by current or prospective clients, and look forward to reaching our next goal."

Heading the challenge of establishing TEL to the AS9100C certification was Andy Johnson, Quality Manager. “I started the process to satisfy the requirements of one of our main domestic customers," said Andy. "Along the way, it became clear that this journey would strengthen our entire organization and could have many positive long-term effects to mature our QMS (Quality Management System) and provide opportunities for increased business growth and profitability.”

The entire process consisted of many steps, including making a vibrant and dynamic QMS that could be accessed by all on the internal network. It also included setting key performance indicators and objectives, such as on-time delivery, product conformity, and customer satisfaction index. Also included was a gap analysis audit, where the assessor pointed out the various gaps the company needed to bridge for the transition from ISO 9001:2008 to AS9100C.

The final step was the Stage 2 Certification Audit, which was conducted from 4th August to 7th August. All of the processes from engineering programming, production, training, sales, quality and calibration, stores and purchase, were rigorously audited.

“Andy and his team did an exemplary job, but the process changes and improvements to achieve AS9100C certification touched nearly every department and employee,” said Rob Taylor. “I extend congratulations to our entire organization for this outstanding achievement.”

The first half of the book features a compilation of work from the area’s finest photographers—in full and stunning color. The last half includes a section titled “Profiles in Excellence.” This section highlights organizations and businesses with deep ties to the state. They tell their story in their own words and celebrate why they call New Hampshire home.

Endorsed by Governor Maggie Hassan, this book will be given as a gift for special guests visiting the state capital building in Concord. TURBOCAM is proud to be included in such a wonderful compilation of New Hampshire history.

Judges voted the Rolls-Royce Grilling Team the winners of the TURBOCAM Grill Off! They served Indian food.

The lawn next to the Turbocam International parking lot was transformed into a carnival Thursday afternoon, Sept. 10, as workers celebrated the company’s 30^th anniversary.

Games of Kan Jam and horseshoes went on as people munched on free food and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and a dunk tank was frequented by anyone with a sense of humor who was willing to be sunk.

The last few months have been challenging as tests at one recent installation showed that the ozone was not purifying the water. Even after recycling, the water still contained e-coli bacteria. In our research, we learned many new things about our system, but we thanked the Lord for enabling us to resolve the problem. Praise God!

Based on what we learned, we installed two safe water systems in the month of June—one at a training institute in Tumkur and the other at a boys home in Malavalli.

“The real reason for the event was to celebrate the joint economic development effort between the Town of Barrington and TURBOCAM," said Mark Overmyer, Director of Organization Development. "It also offered the perfect opportunity for people to know more about TURBOCAM’s new facility, and to come and see what we are all about, ask questions, and meet many of our employees. The open house was a great way to get to know us better. TIPL was launched in 1989 to meet demands for turbomachinery products in India and is located on the west coast of India in Goa (one of the countries most popular tourist destinations). With help from TURBOCAM in the U.S., TIPL has developed significant expertise in precision machining over the past 25 years, including capabilities such as CNC turning, 5-axis milling, balancing, peening, polishing, NDT, and inspection. TIPL ramped up to full nozzle ring production in 2006 with 14 dedicated machining centers running 16 shifts per week.

By 2008, TIPL had produced over 100,000 nozzle rings, but by 2009, demand dropped and the machines remained idle for three months. To meet the increased demand from TiPL’s many customers, full production started again in 2010, and they plan to add 43,000 ft² to their production facility by 2016.

In April 2014, TIPL achieved AS9100C certification. The AS9100C is the international management system standard for the aviation, space, and defense industries. The certification provides TIPL with a comprehensive quality system for providing safe and reliable products in a key growth market where there is rising demand.

“Part of our mission is to support Christian service to God and people,” said Dave Pincince, TURBOCAM’s Marketing Manager. “The need for blood in our area is great. Holding two blood drives every year is a great way to reach out to the local community and give the gift of life.”

Team Grease Monkeys 2014 BAJA Group Shot

This is the basic vehicle called the ERSTE.

“We are pleased to help these engineering students with such a tough assignment,” said Savio Carvalho, TURBOCAM India General Manager. “Baja SAE India challenges the students to design and fabricate a single-seat four-wheeled off-road vehicle to take part in a series of events spread over a course of four days. The events test the vehicle for sound engineering practices that have gone into it and the agility of the vehicle in terms of gradability, speed, acceleration, maneuverability, and durability.”

The Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) is an all-India Institute for higher education. The primary motive of BITS is to “…train young men and women able and eager to create and put into action ideas such as methods, techniques, and information.”

Baja SAE India is an annual event held at the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) test track in Pithampur, where about 125 teams and nearly 6,500 engineering students from across the country will compete with their hand-made ATVs (all-terrain vehicles).  SAE Baja originated as a mini–Baja in 1976 at the University of Carolina. The event has spanned across six countries—USA, Mexico, South Africa, Korea, Brazil, and India.

Six representatives from TURBOCAM travelled to Houston, Texas, September 22-25 to exhibit at the 43rd annual Turbomachinery Symposium and 30th annual Pump Users Symposium. Unique registrants reached approximately 6,200 people (up by over 300 from 2013), breaking the 6,000 mark for the first time in event history. Since Pump & Turbo 2012, registered attendees have increased by 13%. The annual Symposia also experienced a record-number of exhibiting companies and booths in the exhibit hall.

“TURBOCAM has attended this symposium for 23 years. This show is quite unique and we look forward to attending every year,” comments David Pincince, TURBOCAM Marketing Manager. “Like many shows, it affords us a fabulous venue to meet with industry-leading OEMs and aftermarket professionals, but it also provides unique forums for attendees to directly interface with end-users. We always look forward to chatting with end-users on the show floor and hearing from them at discussion groups as they share their experiences on maintenance, performance, troubleshooting, operation, and purchase of rotating equipment.”

The Symposia’s technical program included 13 short course, 18 lectures, 22 tutorials, 27 discussion groups, and 21 case studies led by industry experts from around the world. Topics covered included compressors, steam and gas turbines, expanders, pumps and drivers, and auxiliary equipment such as couplings, bearings, gearboxes, dry gas seals, and annular seals.

The Turbomachinery Symposium began in 1971 and the Pump Symposium began in 1984. In 2011, the symposia were combined and are now held jointly every fall in Houston, Texas. The Pump & Turbo Symposia has become a staple event for industry professionals and leading companies. Built on a history of success, this annual event promotes professional development, technology transfer, peer networking, and information exchange among industry professionals.

“The Turbomachinery Symposium continues to prove its worth as a place where leaders in the turbomachinery industry meet, and TURBOCAM has its place among these leaders as the world's largest supplier of 5-axis machined impellers and other rotating bladed parts,” comments Pincince. “We look forward to another fabulous symposium in 2015.”
