The Turk, also known as the Mechanical Turk or Automaton Chess Player, was a fake chess-playing machine constructed in the late 18th century. This hoax travelled around Europe and America playing and defeating many challengers including Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin!

From 1770 until its destruction by fire in 1854, it was exhibited by various owners as an automaton, though it was exposed in the early 1820s as an elaborate hoax.

Constructed and unveiled in 1770 by Wolfgang von Kempelen (1734–1804) to impress the Empress Maria Theresa, the mechanism appeared to be able to play a strong game of chess against a human opponent, as well as perform the knight’s tour, a puzzle that requires the player to move a knight to occupy every square of a chessboard exactly once.

The Turk was in fact a mechanical illusion that allowed a human chess master hiding inside to operate the machine. Although many had suspected the hidden human operator, the hoax was initially revealed only in the 1820s by the Londoner Robert Willis.

Whether this is a good movie or not, here is a funny extract when he is being assaulted while at the hammam and runs through the Spice Bazaar pretty naked!

Shot in 2001, The Accidental Spy is directed by Terry Chan. In the movie, Chan is Buck Yuen, a fitness equipment salesman who gets sucked into an international spy chase. Buck is fingered by a dying Korean spy as his long-lost son, and sets out across the globe to find his supposed inheritance. Buck’s journey leads him to Turkey where he happens to be excellent as an “accidental spy”.

Everyone knows Massive Attack. Whether you have their albums at home, danced to it in a club or listened to the radio in the past 10 years, surely you have heard Massive Attack. But have you really listened to it? Carefully? Try again!

With a first release in ‘91, the duo from Bristol is considered to be the progenitors of the trip hop genre. Their “Mezzanine” album released in ’98 featured a single called “Inertia Creeps“, now listen to this one. Carefully. How does this sound to you?

Here is the explanation with comments taken from Innerviews: Music Without Borders talking to Robert ’3D’ Del Naja

There are some interesting worldbeat influences strewn throughout the track that are new to Massive Attack:

The music came from nights out in Istanbul. There’s some mad music there at some belly dancing shows which are pretty embarrassingly tourist-orientated. But the music was fucking really cool. I got some tapes and I was in the studio when we were working on this music. Mush came in and I was fucking really bitching and beat as shit and I said “I got this fucking wicked beat I heard from this fucking tape” and we started writing this new beat from it and so it was really cool, d’ya-know-what-I-mean? It was one of those good fucking days in the studio when everyone was on the same fucking vibe.

Cappadocia clearly attracts a lot of attention. For centuries, this region has always been a central point for pilgrims, cultural travelers, trekkers, or … models posing for Sports Illustrated.

This is for us a new kind of visitor, but why should we mind? It was actually shot in 2009 with Anne V, Damaris Lewis, Julie Henderson & Lucia Dvorska as models.

Look at the bottom right corner, look well! Do you see the mighty half man half shark monster wearing a Fez??

“We all live in the Yellow Submarine” with the Beatles heading to rescue Pepperland from the Blue Meanies. However, the Meanies are constituted of various regiments including the mighty “Snapping Turks“…

Part of the “Meanies” are the four-headed bulldogs, the apple bonkers, the dreadful flying Glove and …the Snapping Turks!

The Snapping-Turtle Turks: Possibly the most pettily cruel of the Meanies, and dressed like stereotypical Turkish men, sporting handlebar moustaches and curved goatees on their chins (they even wear those curved Arabic shoes).

These are comparatively short Meanies, but are fat, and their stomachs are in fact oversized, predatory faces whose crocodile sharp-toothed mouths consume objects. We see one of these eating a little girl’s paper windmill on purpose to make her cry.

Pretty rough but so much fun…

The Beatles are spirited away in the eponymous yellow submarine to save Pepperland from the dreaded Blue Meanies. Along the way, the singing saviors encounter a surreal feast for both the eyes and ears: phantasmagorical creatures, outrageous landscapes, and colors that throb and vibrate to each and every Beatle song on the soundtrack.

It’s a journey peaking undoubtedly (and not surprisingly) with the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” sequence. An incredible film experience at all levels, “Yellow Submarine” manages to capture exquisitely and in visual form the beauty and madness of the incomparable Beatles. (from IMDB)
