They are respectful for their holy times. When religion and politics get together, bad results may occur in the country. Medieval age is very good example for Europe. Do you know why millions of people died in 16th century because of plague? Absence of cats. Church authorities declared that cats were the animals of the satan. So they were killed. Rats got more and plague spread. Result was a chaos.

Turkish economy became the best economy before the WW2. Turkish Lira was equal to 1 US Dollar. Turkish Lira was one of the respected currencies at that period.
