<p>In observance of its 40th Anniversary as a
non-profit disability services provider in Utah, TURN Community Services
celebrated “TURN Dreams Day” on March 22nd. On that day, TURN programs
throughout the state hosted parties and community events as a kick-off
to a year of commemorating TURN’s growth as a service provider and its
partnership with Utah’s local communities. One of the highlights was our
 “40th Reunion Prom”!
</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b0191023d0c3b970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Prom2" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b0191023d0c3b970c" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b0191023d0c3b970c-250wi" style="width: 225px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Prom2" /></a>In
Orem, the Canyon View Junior High School Student Council organized a
Prom for the participants of TURN’s programs in Utah County. Indeed,
dreams were turned into reality on that day! Over 100 adults with
disabilities had eagerly prepared for the event, buying or borrowing
formal gowns and “black tie” apparel. For most of these adults, age 22
to 82, this was the first “Prom” or formal dance event that they had
attended! The 40th Reunion Prom featured typical prom activities, such
as a live DJ, dancing, photos, crowning of a King and Queen, games, and
prom punch.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eeb4477bc970d-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="float: left;"><img alt="Prom3" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b017eeb4477bc970d" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eeb4477bc970d-250wi" style="width: 225px; margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;" title="Prom3" /></a>TURN’s
clients rocked! Some of us were concerned about the  high level of
stimulation that would be present – loud music, flashing lights, a large
crowd – that might be a problem for some of the people we serve. We
were wrong! Everybody participated, with many people dancing the entire
time, and many new friends were made.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b0191023d0fa7970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Prom4" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b0191023d0fa7970c" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b0191023d0fa7970c-250wi" style="width: 225px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Prom4" /></a>Canyon View Junior High Students rocked!
These young people were inspiring and enthusiastic! The dance was very
well organized, and they made sure that every one of our folks in
attendance had dance partners and were making friends with everyone!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Our
thanks go out to Daunetta Larsen, Student Council Advisor, for
approaching us and working with TURN and the Student Council to pull off
such an awesome event. The biggest thanks go out to the Student Council
and the young people of Canyon View Junior High and their friends from
Mountain View High for their hard work and their great party skills! You
made forever memories that day! </p>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Cary
Politowicz was born in 1968 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in West
Valley City and lived with his mom and step dad until just recently.
Cary attended Hartvigsen for all of his schooling.  Cary worked at Marko
Foam until February 2008 when he had some medical problems and had to
quit. For the next four and a half years, Cary stayed home with his
mom.  Cary says that his mom is his best friend and he enjoys spending
time with her.

																			In
October of 2012, Cary suffered some health problems that resulted in
his left leg being amputated. After being released from the hospital,
Cary spent the next few months at Woodland Park Care Center. During his
time at the center, Cary made many friends with staff and residents. <br />
																			<br />
																			In
February of this year, Cary moved into a TURN program and now resides
at the TURN Kensington Duplex.  Cary quickly made friends with his
roommate and neighbors. His favorite thing about living at Kensington is
all the activities he gets to do. Cary is looking forward to many trips
to Lagoon, going to the movies, and bowling, among many other
activities.<br />
																			<br />
Cary attends TURN’s Wilmington Day Program.  He
enjoys going every day and says that his favorite thing at the day
program is going out on the activities, and the van rides to pick up his
friends. When asked if he is happy, Cary will often look down at where
his leg would be and say he wishes he had his leg back.  But then, he
looks up and with a huge smile, says how happy he is to live at his new
home and how lucky he is to have so many friends!  </div><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TurnDreams/~4/xL-kdm7JqX8" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

 the year, TURN participants have the opportunity<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b019101d657bf970c-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Recreation1" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b019101d657bf970c" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b019101d657bf970c-250wi" style="width: 250px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Recreation1" /></a> to go on trips. One of our most anticipated trip opportunities is a river trip in Moab with SPLORE,
one of our favorite cooperative non-profits. We meet SPLORE at the
Colorado River and they take us down the “Daily Section”. We ride the
rapids, swim, have water fights, good food and lots of fun.  </p>
<p>Other
fun trips we have taken  our participants on include going to The
American West Heritage Center in Wellsville, staying at Brianhead to
attended “Pastabilities Down South, Heber Valley Railroad trips, and
camping at Yellowstone and other National Forests. We also plan special
trips for specific people or programs. We recently helped plan a cruise
for a client and have planned trips to the Smokey Mountains, San
Antonio, Tucson, Disneyland, Disneyworld, and trips for clients to visit
 family members. </p>
<p>
Another
 one of our most popular recreational activities <a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b01901be05c65970b-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Recreation3" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b01901be05c65970b" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b01901be05c65970b-250wi" style="width: 250px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Recreation3" /></a>includes Holiday
parties and overnighters. We have Halloween parties with costumes,
dancing, and food. We also plan Thanksgiving and Christmas overnight
activities designed for people who are unable to be with family or
friends for the holidays and enjoy group activities. We stay at the
Country Inn and Suites in West Valley for two nights. We have crafts,
games, etc. in the group room. On Thanksgiving Day some people go to a
movie and we all go the Cracker Barrel for a Thanksgiving Dinner. On
Christmas everyone goes out to Chili’s for a Christmas Eve Dinner. There
are stockings in the morning and Christmas Dinner is brought in and
served by a group of volunteers. We also plan Christmas Parties for the
Day Programs and a Residential Christmas Party dance, meal and social. </p>
<p>We
 have two summer picnics that our participants love.<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eeaddea8b970d-popup" onclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Recreation4" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b017eeaddea8b970d" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eeaddea8b970d-250wi" style="width: 250px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Recreation4" /></a> One is held by TURN
on a Saturday in August. Clients, staff and their families are invited.
We have carnival games, food, and music by The Old Leather Band. The
other is sponsored in conjunction with United Way Day. We are matched
with a group of volunteers who assist us with the picnic. For several
years now we have been paired with Workers Compensation Fund. They
provide lots of volunteers, games, prizes, and food for the event. This
picnic was started to give people at TURN’s day programs the opportunity
 to attend a company picnic.</p>
<p>Eleanor has a lot on her plate and is very grateful for all of the
helpers she has, saying the program “could not happen without them”.
Office assistants as well as many of TURN’s staff from programs assist
her. The program also benefits from the help of many volunteers from
TURN’s Board of Directors, staff family and friends, and TURN
participants.</p>
<p>Thank you to Eleanor and all who take part in our Recreation Programs who make life for everyone much more fun!</p>

It has been one year since we took the plunge into the world of social
media. One thing we have realized in our last year is there are a lot of people in Utah who don't know who we are or what we do.  We would like to change that! It is important to us to increase awareness, support
and advocacy for TURN and people with disabilities!</p>
<p> TURN supports people of all ages who may have mental
retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, or other
developmental disabilities.  Many have secondary diagnoses such as
mental illness and physical limitations.  TURN provides support for
families of people with disabilities as well.</p>
<p>TURN’s comprehensive service strategies are designed to help people
with complex medical, physical, communication, and behavioral
challenges, and changing needs related to aging.  TURN accomplishes its
mission by providing an array of community integrated programs and
supports for people with disabilities, including: </p>

<p><strong>Eligibility:</strong> Eligibility criteria is
established by the <a href="http://www.dspd.utah.gov/eligibility.htm" target="_blank">Division of Services to Persons with Disabilities
(DSPD)</a>.  TURN serves persons referred to us and funded by DSPD.
Families/clients who wish to privately pay for support services may
contact the <a href="http://turncommunityservices.org/contact-us" target="_blank">nearest area TURN office</a> to get more information. </p>
<p><strong>Locations:</strong> Our services are available in Davis, Weber, Salt Lake, Utah, Sevier, Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Washington and Kane counties. Programs are designed to meet the needs of people living in
local communities with available resources.  Not all services are
available in every community.</p>
<p><strong>Professional Support Staff:</strong> Employees pass training in CPR/First Aid, Food Handlers’ Permit
and SOAR.  Specialized training includes Disability Awareness, Natural
Supports, Respect, Recreation, Medications, Grief and Loss,
Relationships, Person-Centered Planning, Teaching Methods, and Behavior
Supports.</p>
<p><strong>Service Level:</strong> Our goal is to maximize independence. Time spent in service is
matched with a required level of care. This varies (ie: a few hours a
week for someone in an apartment and working), to (ie: 24 hours a day
for someone with inclusive needs).</p>
<p>If you have more questions about our services or wonder how you can help, visit our <a href="http://turncommunityservices.org/" target="_blank">website</a> or <a href="http://turncommunityservices.org/contact-us" target="_blank">contact one of our main offices</a>. If you know someone who could benefit from our programs, share us!!! We would love to hear from you!</p>

<p><strong>William Carrillo</strong>
has received a variety of Day services since graduating from high
school in 1975. He has lived in Southern Utah and Las Vegas, but now
lives in Utah with his sister and two brothers. He loves that he has his
siblings to help take care of him. He loves all his friends at his Day
Program; he worries about them if they are not there, and he makes sure
staff knows if he thinks somebody needs help. He is an artist who loves
to show his creations and bring them home for his family. He is also an
avid and master bowler, and he wears a "bowling bracelet" that he says
gives him good luck. William knows what he likes, and if lunch or dinner
choices are offered, a frequent and polite response is, "No thank you, I
 want McDonalds."<br />
																		 <br />
He is the most friendly and outgoing person you will
ever meet! He has friends everywhere, so it is an adventure for staff
who go out into the community with him! He is able to walk up to anyone
and talk with them as if he has known them all of his life. William
likes his independence and he especially likes to do things without
help. Many years of seizures has taken a toll on him, but it is
especially important to William that people know he is a strong man. You
will always get a loud "Hello!" from him, followed by an invitation to
see how large his arm muscles are! William uses a walker to keep him
steady, but it doesn't stop him from dancing with pretty girls!</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TurnDreams/~4/NxEuz6I-m6E" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

met a gentleman at TURN City Center for the Arts and the man leaned
forward from his wheelchair to lower his head near Boss. “The people
here love Boss so much,” says Allison, TURN’s Program Coordinator. “It’s
cool to see how much they look forward to him and how much it brightens
 their day.”
</p>
<p>During
the two years that Boss and his handler, Nancy Varela, have been
members of Therapy Animals of Utah (TAU) they volunteered at a mental
health facility and a library before settling on TURN City Center for
the Arts. When TAU Director Gaelyn Derr heard about the opportunity at
TURN, she immediately thought of Nancy and Boss, and accompanied them on
their first visit. “It has turned out to be a special fit for Boss,”
says Derr, “and after the first few months of experimenting with
different activities it has been a great success.” <br />Varela agrees, “The
response at TURN is great.”</p>
<p><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eea2eb0cb970d-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="4legsb" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b017eea2eb0cb970d" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eea2eb0cb970d-800wi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="4legsb" /></a>One
of the women at the center developed a gradual love of Boss. At first
she was uninterested, but now she not only pets him, she plays songs on
the piano for him and is delighted that he sits and listens. Boss
thrilled an artist by standing up on his hind legs to gaze at a painting
of himself that had been displayed during one of the monthly Art Walks.
Sometimes the folks at the center assist Varela to walk Boss. A lady
with a hearing impairment has learned how to give Boss signs. “It’s
heartwarming to see her communicate with Boss,” said Varela. Boss takes
the different interactions in stride and enjoys moving around from person to person.</p>
<p>
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eea2eb14c970d-pi" style="float: left;"><img alt="4legsc" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a0167647093ba970b017eea2eb14c970d" src="http://turncommunityservices.typepad.com/.a/6a0167647093ba970b017eea2eb14c970d-800wi" style="margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;" title="4legsc" /></a>Allison understands the therapeutic value that expressing oneself
with various forms of art can bring. Adding animal-assisted therapy to
the day program was a new experience for her. When Boss started visiting
the year old day program eight months ago, Allison admits, “I had no
idea what to expect.” Boss and his handler Nancy Varela have turned that
around. “The biggest thing Boss does is brighten their moods; they’re
so much happier on days he’s here,” says Allison. “Even the residential
employees can tell there’s a difference. Who would have thought it was
as easy as having a dog visit?”</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TurnDreams/~4/-1dVxjP27bE" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>
