Une solution pour limiter la maladie Tuta absoluta, ou la "mineuse » de la tomate qui a infecté les cultures de six États du Nigeria et diminué sévèrement l’approvisionnement des usines de concentré, a été trouvée par une équipe de scientifiques du National Horticultural Research Institute (Nihort) à Ibadan dans l’État d’Oyo au Nigeria.

La technologie mise au point consiste à utiliser un plateau et une lampe rechargeable. «La technologie consiste en l'utilisation d'un plateau et de lampes rechargeables. Le plateau est rempli d'eau, arrosé avec un peu de détergent et une pierre est placée à l'intérieur. Une lampe rechargeable est placée sur la pierre. Une fois que les ravageurs, qui pondent des œufs endommageant les tomates, s’approchent de la lumière, ils vont tomber dans le plateau et seront piégés. Donc ils se noient et meurent dans l’eau », a expliqué le chef de l’équipe, Dr Abiola Oke.

Moroccan greenhouse grower successfully fights Tuta Absoluta with pheromone sticky traps

Russell IPM recently launched the upgraded OPTIROLL Super sticky traps, well received by growers worldwide, and they also offer solutions specific to one of the most devastating and fastest spreading pests of our age, Tuta absoluta.

Yellow Sticky Trap

Tuta absoluta is a serious invasive pest of tomatoes and potatoes. The problems associated with Tuta absoluta are its rapid population multiplication (up to 12 generations in 1 year) and its ability to develop resistance toward synthetic insecticides within few generations. After devastating tomato production in South America for years, it was introduced accidentally to Spain in 2006. Since then it has spread rapidly to main tomato production in Spain and the rest of the Mediterranean region and beyond. Recent reports on presence of the pest in Tanzania have sent shock waves through the agricultural world as farmers struggle to protect their livelihoods and also to keep their prices within reach of the average consumer.

For the Tuta pest, Russell IPM developed a full range of solutions to halt the pest at various stages in development.

Clear Sticky Trap

For the adult stage they have developed a sticky fly roll called Tuta+ which incorporates pheromones to specifically attract the pest. As with standard rolls, the yellow colour of the trap has the advantage of attracting whitefly and aphids while the incorporated pheromone attracts Tuta absoluta, with the advantage of a significant reduction and a more cost-effective control where these 3 pests are present.

Russell IPM’s Tuta+ is commonly used in mass trapping by farmers including the Moroccan greenhouse grower Hahou Abdellah. In Morocco, Tuta+ pheromone traps have been found a very efficient and helpful tool to control the pests and reduce crop damage.

"We grow several kind of crops in the open field and in greenhouses in the regions around Agadir and Dakhla. Our production areas cover a few hundred hectares and we have to deal with many pests and diseases. In order to fight pests like Tuta Absoluta and whiteflies we have been using Tuta+ for a while with good results. This has led towards an improvement in our greenhouse output. There are less pests and we achieve a better yield and higher overall product quality."

Control and monitoring of Tuta absoluta is one of Russell IPM’s areas of expertise and they are continually looking to improve the plight of farmers dealing with this pest. For greenhouses working with beneficials, Russell IPM developed the Tuta roll, which is a clear sticky roll with pheromones incorporated to the sticky surface.

Newest to the Tuta range is the Tuta black – a new version of the Tuta roll which is already proving popular. Recents trials in Spain indicated a high capture rate and the new product is already receiving a lot of interest from farmers who want to find the most up to date and effective methods of protecting crops.

Russell IPM are extending their reach into the horticulture and agriculture market, having recently introduced the OPTIROLL Super for whiteflies and thrips. Equipped with additional visual attraction to catch more insects, the capture rate of OPTIROLL Super can be twice as high as that of non-patterned sticky traps. “The secret is the pattern on the trap,” Dr Al Zaidi of Russell IPM said. “During our research we discovered that insects are more likely to be found caught on the borders of the sticky trap because they are more triggered by contrasting colours. Afterwards we experimented with different horizontal and vertical lines and circles until we found the right ratio of contrasting patterns.”

FIRST RECORD OF THE PREDATORY BUG, NESIDICORIS TENUIS IN
ETHIOPIA

The zoophytophagous predator, Nesidiocoris tenuis Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae) occurs in the
Mediterranean (Gabarra, et al., 2008) and Asia (Muniappan, et al., 2012). It predates on aphids,
whiteflies, thrips, mites, and eggs and small larvae of lepidopteran insects. In the absence of prey
insects, it will feed on host plants. In addition, it oviposits its eggs in plant tissue. In the
Mediterranean, it is inundatively released in greenhouses for control of whiteflies and the South
American tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).
Tuta absoluta is a native of South America, and was accidentally introduced to Spain in 2006
(Urbaneja, et al., 2007). Since then, this highly invasive and destructive pest has spread to most of
Europe and the Mediterranean. It was reported in Ethiopia, in the Tigray region in 2012 and in the
Central Rift Valley in 2013 (Ayalew and Fekadu, 2013).
In November 2013, the USAID-sponsored IPM Innovation Lab (formerly CRSP) conducted a
Tuta absoluta workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to sensitize Eastern African countries
of its impending invasion. As a part of the workshop, a field trip was conducted to a
tomato field at Koka in the Oromia region on November 27, 2013. A single male specimen
of Nesidiocoris tenuis was collected by using a sweep-net over tomato plants. Its identity was
confirmed by Dr. Thomas J. Henry of the Systematic Entomology Laboratory in the
Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the specimen
was deposited at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History,
Washington, D.C. It was the first record of N. tenuis in Ethiopia and most probably in Africa.

La Consejería de Agricultura y Agua, a través del Instituto Murciano de Investigación y Desarrollo Agrario y Alimentario (IMIDA), desarrolla un proyecto que contempla la introducción de modelos matemáticos de dinámicas de poblaciones para optimizar el control biológico de la plaga más dañina para el cultivo del tomate, la Tuta absoluta. El departamento de control biológico y protección de cultivos del IMIDA lleva cuatro años dedicado al estudio y aplicación de estos modelos matemáticos, en colaboración con el Instituto para la Biodiversidad y la Dinámica de los Ecosistemas (IBED) de la Universidad de Ámsterdam. El proyecto está en una fase muy avanzada y pronto se podrá ofrecer a los agricultores directrices concretas para establecer programas de actuación.

Según el director del IMIDA, Adrián Martínez, la Tuta absoluta “es una plaga de origen sudamericano que elige el tomate como principal hospedante. Se detectó en Castellón en 2006 y se expandió rápidamente por toda la franja mediterránea, en donde llegó a producir importantes daños en los cultivos”.

En este sentido, explicó que “la Tuta se instala en la hoja de la planta y hace galerías, por lo que reduce la capacidad fotosintética de ésta. La larva también perfora el fruto, lo que impide su comercialización. En la Región de Murcia su impacto ha sido considerable”.

Según Juan Antonio Sánchez, investigador del departamento de Biotecnología y protección de cultivos del IMIDA, hasta la aparición de Tuta absoluta los agricultores murcianos disponían de un programa de control biológico de plagas bastante conseguido. Estaba basado en la utilización de enemigos naturales, que mantenían a raya a la principal plaga que había entonces: la mosca blanca. No obstante, con la entrada de la Tuta el IMIDA tuvo que replantearse de nuevo todas las estrategias de lucha.

En un primer momento, los agricultores intentaron controlar la plaga por medios químicos, pero se comprobó que no era suficiente. Posteriormente, se empezó a trabajar con un chinche autóctono, que no es un depredador estricto, sino que cuando hay escasez de presas se alimenta entonces de la planta, con lo cual también puede llegar a originar daños en los cultivos si no se toman las medidas oportunas.

Según Juan Antonio Sánchez, la introducción de modelos matemáticos ha permitido diseñar estrategias óptimas de manejo, teniendo en cuenta aspectos como la evolución de las poblaciones de la plaga y del depredador y la cantidad de alimento que hay que suministrar a éste para que no cause daños en la planta, entre otros.

El equipo del departamento del IMIDA realiza ensayos en laboratorio para conocer todos los parámetros biológicos y posteriormente se verifican en campo. Los modelos matemáticos permiten predecir cómo va a evolucionar el sistema.

Introducción temprana en semillero

Otra técnica empleada en la lucha biológica consiste es la introducción temprana del depredador en semillero. De esta forma, la planta de tomate ya dispone de unas defensas y cuando llega la plaga puede controlarla a densidades mucho más bajas, antes de que se produzcan daños.

El Servicio de Sanidad Vegetal de la Consejería también ha contribuido en gran medida al control de la Tuta absoluta, asesorando a los agricultores en la mejora de los sistemas de asepsia en los invernaderos de tomate, con buenos cerramientos que dificulten la entrada de la plaga, el uso de feromonas, trampas de captura y la liberación de depredadores.

Abstract

Insecticide susceptibility varies with the insect life stage and although the egg stage is sometimes perceived as the most vulnerable, it is a difficult target for insecticide application and little studied as such. Egg susceptibility to insecticides is generally considered important for insect growth regulators and insect pests of reduced mobility like leaf miners because of their placement on the host plant part targeted by the insecticidal application. The egg exposure to the juvenile hormone mimic pyriproxyfen was studied here in the tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), a key tomato insect pest, aiming to assess if mortality is achieved due to insecticide ovicidal activity or due to behavioural impairment of the larvae preventing egg hatching. Survival analysis of treated tomato leaves and/or eggs indicated the importance of egg exposure to pyriproxyfen leading to a significant decrease in survival with a nearly 50% reduction in survival time, which peaked at the first instar. Ovicidal activity of pyriproxyfen in the tomato leaf miner was negligible, but image recording and behaviour analysis indicated behavioural impairment of larval activity compromising hatching and leaf mining by early instar larvae leading to high mortality at this stage (ca 50%). The likely causes and management implications of such findings are discussed.

Ethiopia: Tuta absoluta is extending its damage to the potato tuber

Key Potato production areas in Sudan and Ethiopia are close to each other along the Blue Nile and its tributaries. The recent expansion of the Tuta absoluta in the areas south of Wadi Medni in Sudan, is pausing a serious risk across the board to the potato production areas around the upper Blue Nile in Ethiopia. Tuta absoluta has been a serious threat to Tomato production damaging both leaf as well as fruit and if went unchecked it can devastate up to 100% of the drop. Up until recently the damage to potato crop was limited mainly to the leaf part of the plant. However, during the expansion of Tuta absoluta into Sudan, the pest seems to have extended its reach to the potato Tuber as well.

Due to its nutritional value and its export potential, currently there are serious efforts, sponsored by many international agencies, to enhance the production of potato in East Africa for the purpose of providing sustainable staple food source in the region as we well as improving farmer’s earnings. The new pest can present a serious threat to such efforts and needs to be kept in check as early as possible. During the past three years and while expanding eastward from Spain along the North African coast, Tuta absoluta have caused havoc in agricultural production , devastating crops in all countries on the way, elevating prices beyond the capability of average consumer. International aid and development agencies are strongly urged to start early monitoring provide education material to the farmers to identify the risk and plan to act against the pest and limit its damage. Pheromone traps are simple and effective tool to alert farmers to the incoming risk.

Tuta absoluta is a serious invasive pest. After devastating tomato production in South America, it was introduced accidently to Spain in 2006. Since then it has spread rapidly to main tomato production in Spain and the rest of the Mediterranean region and beyond. The problems associated with this pest are the rapid population multiplication (up to 12 generations in one year) as well as its ability to develop resistance toward synthetic insecticides within few generations.

Afin de préserver la culture, les exploitants de la filière sont interpellés pour faire front contre toute sorte de parasites en épargnant la faune utile (abeille, coccinelle…)

La lutte intégrée contre la mineuse de la tomate, Tuta Absoluta, a été, mardi, le thème d’une journée de formation destinée aux producteurs de la tomate. Organisée conjointement par la direction de la protection des végétaux et des contrôles techniques (DPVCT), du ministère de l’Agriculture et du Développement rural, et la FAO, cette rencontre a vu la participation de nombreux agriculteurs, techniciens agricoles et vétérinaires de la wilaya de Biskra que le sujet ne laisse visiblement pas insensibles. «Cette formation vise la protection de la production de la tomate par le renforcement des capacités d’intervention des agriculteurs contre ce redoutable ravageur et la vulgarisation chez les intéressés des techniques modernes ayant prouvé leur efficacité phytosanitaire», a indiqué la représentante de la DPVCT, Sofia Touadi, qui a mis en avant la stratégie de lutte contre la Tuta Absoluta, élaborée par le MADR, et qui s’appuie sur l’utilisation des phéromones sexuelles réduisant ostensiblement l’infestation du fruit.

Le ministère de l’Agriculture et du Développement rural distribué gratuitement aux fellahs 1,1 million de phéromones depuis l’année 2009. Au titre de la campagne 2011-2012, un quota important de ce produit éradicateur de l’insecte locuste, pouvant causer la perte totale des tomates mais aussi d’autres produits maraîchers, est disponible, ont assuré les responsables de la direction des services agricoles. Pour sa part, le Docteur Dridi Bachir, expert à la FAO, a exhorté les agriculteurs à redoubler d’effort pour protéger leurs exploitations contre toutes les sortes de parasites.
Il insistera sur les mesures prophylactiques, les méthodes biotechniques, la préservation de la faune utile (abeilles, coccinelles…) et l’utilisation raisonnée des composés chimiques afin de protéger, non seulement l’agriculteur et sa production, mais aussi le consommateur, l’environnement et l’équilibre des écosystèmes oasiens.

Por ello, en un inicio la práctica para su control fue el empleo de productos químicos. Sin embargo, desde su aparición son varios los enemigos naturales oportunistas que han aceptado a este fitófago exótico como nuevo hospedero o presa. Alguno de ellos ya se está utilizando exitosamente en el control de T. absoluta en conjunto con otras técnicas como son el uso de semioquímicos y/o la aplicación de medidas culturales.

La polilla del tomate Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidopetera: Gelichiidae) es originaria de Sudamérica, donde está considerada una de las plagas más devastadoras en el cultivo del tomate. La primera vez que se detectó en España fue en la provincia de Castellón a finales de 2006. Desde entonces, su localización no sólo se ha ampliado a diferentes puntos de la cuenca del Mediterráneo, donde se ha convertido en una plaga clave en el cultivo del tomate, sino que también ha sido citada en diferentes países de Europa continental.

Ciclo biológico

Tuta absoluta es un microlepidóptero que pasa por cuatro estados de desarrollo: huevo, larva, pupa y adulto. Los adultos (7 mm de longitud y 10-11 mm de envergadura) (foto 1), suelen estar escondidos entre las hojas durante el día, presentando una mayor actividad matinal- crepuscular (foto 2).

El huevo (0,4mmde largo y 0,2mmde diámetro), es de forma ovalada, de color blanco cremoso recién puesto, tornándose anaranjado conforme se aproxima la eclosión (foto 3).

El estado de larva comprende cuatro estadios. Tras la eclosión, la larva de primer estadio (1,6 mm y de color crema con la cabeza de color oscuro) busca un punto de entrada en la hoja, y tras penetrar entre las dos epidermis, en su avance, consume el mesófilo, dejando zonas translúcidas llamadas galerías (foto 4). El segundo (2,8 mm) y tercer estadios (4,7 mm) van adquiriendo una coloración verdosa, y al alcanzar el cuarto estadio (7,7 mm) aparece una mancha rojiza dorsal desde los ocelos hasta el margen posterior del cuerpo.

Las larvas pueden infestar foliolos, flores, tallos y frutos causando pérdidas de hasta el 100% en tomates destinados al mercado en fresco (foto 5). Estas larvas, en ocasiones, pueden abandonar la galería en la que se encuentran para atacar otras hojas aumentando así el daño en planta (foto 6). En cuanto a los frutos, los prefiere en estado inmaduro y el ataque se realiza frecuentemente por el extremo peduncular, lo que a veces dificulta su detección, y realiza galerías que provocan deformaciones y facilitan el ataque de agentes patógenos, potenciando su pudrición y dejándolos inservibles comercialmente. En ocasiones la larva puede abandonar el fruto y atacar otro dentro del mismo racimo.

La pupa es de forma cilíndrica de 4,3 mm de largo y 1,1 mm de diámetro (foto 7). La mayoría de las veces está cubierta por un capullo blanco y sedoso.

El control de esta plaga en la zona de origen ha pasado del uso indiscriminado de tratamientos químicos a una estrategia de gestión integrada donde el control biológico juega un papel importante. En España, como cualquier plaga exótica, T. absoluta, se introdujo sin la presencia de enemigos naturales que pudiesen regular sus poblaciones. Por ello, en un inicio la práctica para su control fue el empleo de productos químicos. Sin embargo, desde su aparición son varios los enemigos naturales oportunistas que han aceptado a este fitófago exótico como nuevo hospedero o presa. Alguno de ellos ya se está utilizando exitosamente en el control de T. absoluta en conjunto con otras técnicas como son el uso de semioquímicos y/o la aplicación de medidas culturales.

Depredadores

Los míridos depredadores Nesidiocoris tenuis Reuter (foto 8) y Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur) (foto 9) son dos depredadores que están presentes de forma natural en el cultivo de tomate. Estos míridos son criados en masa y se utilizan en el control de moscas blancas en el cultivo de tomate. Al tratarse de depredadores oportunistas, aceptaron como presa los huevos y larvas de T. absoluta. El potencial depredador de ambos míridos ha sido estudiado en condiciones de laboratorio y se ha visto que tanto N. tenuis como M. pygmaeus son capaces de depredar tanto huevos como larvas (en especial larvas de primer estadio) de T. absoluta. Los adultos de ambas especies fueron capaces de depredar más de cien huevos, por individuo y día. Se ha visto también que cuando N. tenuis y M. pygmaeus se encuentran bien instalados en el cultivo son capaces de reducir el daño en fo- liolo hasta un 97% y un 75% y el daño en fruto hasta un 100% y 56%, respectivamente.

Por otra parte, otros depredadores como el nábido Nabis pseudophorus ibericus (Ramane) y el míridoDicyphus marrocannus Wagner (foto 10),han sido observados depredando tanto huevos como larvas deT. absoluta. También se ha observado a los fitoseidos depredadores Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot(foto 11) y Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) depredando sobre huevos de T. absoluta, aunque también son capaces de matar y depredar larvas de primer estadio, en cultivo de berenjena. También se ha detectado una especie de avispa todavía sin determinar, y una hormiga del género Pheidole sp. capaz de depredar larvas de varios estadios.

Parasitoides

En la cuenca mediterránea se han detectado varios parasitoides, como es el caso de Trichogramma achaeae Nagaraja & Nagarkatti, un endoparasitoide de huevos que se comercializa para su liberación masiva en programas de control biológico inundativo.También se han encontrado individuos de otras especies pertenecientes al mismo género pero están todavía por identificar. Por otra parte, el parasitoide de larvas Necremnus artynes (Walker) se ha encontrado parasitando espontáneamente a T. absoluta en diferentes áreas de la cuenca mediterránea (fotos 12 y 13). El parasitoide de la misma familiaStenomesius sp. se ha encontrado en la zona tomatera del Maresme (Barcelona) por el grupo de entomología del IRTA. Ambas especies de parasitoides de larvas son ectoparasitoides idiobiontes que parasitan el segundo y tercer estadio larval de T. absoluta. Además, se han detectado recientemente varias especies sin determinar (principalmente bracónidos), lo que hace pensar que el complejo de parasitoides que se está adaptando a T. absoluta va lógicamente en aumento.

Entomopatógenos

Los productos insecticidas basados en la bacteria entomopatógena Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) son muy efectivos para controlar T.absoluta durante toda la estación de cultivo (foto 14). Los resultados obtenidos en el IVIA a partir de ensayos de laboratorio, invernadero y parcela experimental, demostraron que los daños causados por la plaga podían reducirse en más de un 90% tratando solo con estos productos incluso con niveles de infestación muy altos. Los tratamientos fueron realizados cada dos semanas a 90 MUI/l (millones de unidades internacionales por litro). Es importante tener en cuenta que la efectividad de Bt será mayor si los tratamientos comienzan justo cuando se detectan los primeros daños. Además, es necesario evitar las horas de luz solar intensa y emplear el volumen de caldo suficiente para lograr un buen mojado del cultivo.

Los productos de Bt son conocidos por su inocuidad para la fauna auxiliar y los enemigos naturales. En este caso, los productos ensayados fueron inocuos para los depredadores N. tenuis, M. pygmaeus y D. marrocannus y no afectaron su instalación en el cultivo tanto en invernadero como al aire libre. La estrategia empleada ha permitido demostrar que es posible integrar la utilización de míridos depredadores conjuntamente con los tratamientos con Bt para lograr un control muy efectivo de la plaga sólo con métodos de control biológico. Esta estrategia consiste en la liberación de míridos desde el inicio del cultivo, complementado con los tratamientos periódicos con Bt desde que se detectan los primeros daños.De esta forma Bt mantendrá bajas las poblaciones de T. absoluta dada su acción larvicida, mientras que los míridos aumentan sus poblaciones depredando los huevos de T. absoluta.Una vez que los míridos estén instalados en el cultivo se pueden parar los tratamientos con Bt puesto que los míridos son capaces de controlar la plaga por sí mismos. Esta estrategia tiene además un valor añadido, ya que los míridos contribuirán al control de otras plagas como la mosca blanca o la araña roja, mientras que Bt será de gran ayuda en el control de otros lepidópteros como la Helicoverpa armigera.

Se han realizado también algunos estudios preliminares con otros entomopatógenos como el hongoBeauveria bassiana y los nematodos Steinernema carpocapsae, Steinernema feltiae y Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. No obstante, se debe hacer un trabajo muy exhaustivo antes de que estos patógenos puedan utilizarse como ingredientes activos en formulaciones para el control de T. absoluta.

Consideraciones finales

A partir de la introducción de T. absoluta en España, se han citado varios enemigos naturales que se han adaptado a la plaga. Esta información se ha utilizado como base para diseñar estrategias de control biológico, que ya han sido probadas en varias localidades y en condiciones tanto de invernadero como de cultivo al aire libre. Los resultados son muy prometedores, lográndose un control muy efectivo de la plaga sólo con la integración de herramientas de control biológico.

La situación actual hace pensar que los enemigos naturales van a jugar un papel muy importante en la reducción de las poblaciones de T. absoluta. Además, se espera que otros enemigos naturales autóctonos se adapten a esta plaga exótica en los próximos años, por lo que hace necesaria la continua prospección de los campos y el estudio de la fauna auxiliar para conocer su papel en la regulación de las poblaciones de T. absoluta.

Aunque en un inicio sólo se localizó en invernaderos de malla y al aire libre en Castellón, Valencia y Murcia (Monserrat, 2008), en las últimas campañas se ha detectado este lepidóptero causando daños en invernaderos de la provincia de Almería. Dentro del marco de búsqueda de soluciones biológicas y que se encuadren dentro de un programa de manejo integrado de plagas (IPM) en tomate, se vienen estudiando las posibilidades de utilización de diferentes organismos de control biológico contra T.absoluta, tanto macro como microbiológicos. Puesto que los nematodos entomopatógenos han demostrado gran eficacia para el control de diferentes especies plaga de lepidópteros (Galeano et al., 2009) y coleópteros (Galeano et al., 2007) se han realizado bioensayos con larvas de esta polilla del tomate, para averiguar primero, la susceptibilidad de la plaga a este tipo de entomopatógeno, y qué especie de nematodo, de los comercializados actualmente, es la más eficaz en el control de esta plaga. De los resultados en los ensayos de laboratorio se ha observado una mayor mortalidad de las larvas cuando eran tratadas con la especie Steinernema carpocapsae. Los bioensayos llevados a cabo tanto sobre las larvas fuera de la galería de la hoja como sobre las hojas minadas con larvas de la polilla, revelan la alta susceptibilidad de esta plaga a Steinernema carpocapsae. El uso de programas IPM, en los que se combinan enemigos naturales como Nesidiocoris tenuis, trampeo masivo y complementado con aplicaciones foliares de S. carpocapsae, es una estrategia que puede ser viable para el control de esta plaga reduciendo la utilización de productos químicos, demostrada en los ensayos de semicampo extendido. Abstract Tuta absoluta, pest originary from South America, was detected in Spain during 2006, according to OEPP, with first records in the tomato crops of Valencia Community and Baleares Islands. Although in the beginning it was only located in insect net greenhouses and outdoors in Castellón, Valencia and Murcia (Monserrat, 2008), during the last seasons it has been detected causing damages in plastic greenhouses in Almería. In order to find biological solutions to be included in the integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in tomato, it has been studied the possibilities of the different commercial biocontrol organisms against Tuta absoluta, macro and microorganisms. Since the entomopathogenic nematodes have showed a high efficacy to control different Lepidoptera (Galeano et al., 2009) and Coleoptera pests (Galeano et al., 2007), we have carried out bioassays with T. absoluta larvae, to know first, the susceptibility of this pest versus this type of entomopathogens, and which nematode species, from the commercial nematode products nowadays, reach the higher efficacy to control this pest. After the results from the laboratory trials, we have observed a higher larvae mortality when the larvae were treated with Steinernema carpocapsae. The bioassays were carried out with larvae inside and out of the leaf mines, and the results showed a high susceptibility of Tuta absoluta to Steinernema carpocapsae. Las autoridades fitosanitarias del país están en alerta ante el riesgo de que ingrese a Costa Rica la Tuta absoluta , polilla que afectaría la producción de tomate nacional.

Las autoridades del Servicio Fitosanitario de Estado (SFE) informaron en un comunicado quetienen conocimiento de trasiego ilegal de producto a través de los puntos ciegos fronterizos , que podrían traer la plaga al territorio nacional.

La plaga afecta el rendimiento de las plantaciones de tomate, ya que el insecto se introduce en las hojas y fruto, de los que se alimenta, dejando perforaciones .

“En los últimos dos meses el Servicio Fitosanitario del Estado ha colocado 117 trampasespecíficas para esta polilla en 39 sitios distribuidos estratégicamente en todo el país, con lo que podríamos determinar si la Tuta hubiera ingresado a nuestro territorio” explicó la jefe de Vigilancia y Control de Plagas del Servicio Fitosanitario del Estado, Elizabeth Ramírez.

Las exportaciones de tomate costarricense se dirigen hacia Estados Unidos, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Panamá, Honduras, El Salvador y Colombia. En 2010, este intercambio comercial significó el ingreso de más de $2,6 millones

Spain: Koppert develops a new strategy to warrant biological controls on tomato

The multinational company with headquarters in the Almeria province evaluates the results of their use of natural methods.

Biological control on tomatoes became a tested reality. Main cooperatives in the province want to go completely with this new strategy, that is efficient, safe and cheap. The key to this system's success, as pointed out by Koppert, is in the presence of "Nesidiocoris" nymphs and eggs in the plants at the moment they get to the greenhouse. For that, company's technicians control the releases and feeding of them in the seedbed. Then, make sure that plants arrive well inoculated.

Later, the grower "has to do no more than take care of the few necessary health plan treatments. The technicians inform about the products that can be used and about the development of the useful bugs and the diesease", as they explained.

In the 2010-2011 campaign, the strategy of releases in the tomato seedbed was commercially applied in more than 300 ha in Andalucia. Several cooperatives, CASI, Eurosol, Ferva, Consumomar, Vicasol, Casur, La Palma and SAT La Caña participated. At the same time, Koppert tuned the automation of the releases with a Minibug® machine. "The results were impressive. Treatments with insecticides on those parcels with "Nesidiocoris tenuis", were few and far between. In no case were problems of "Tuta absoluta", "white fly", or the "Cuchara" virus", they explained.

In the year 2004, Koppert tuned the mass production techniques for "Nesidiocoris tenuis", for use against the "white fly", "trips" and "red spider". In 2008, there was a new disease - "tuta absoluta" - in the Spanish tomato cultivations. A year later, Koppert showed that "Nesidiocoris" once well established in the cultivation can control and kill the "tuta absoluta" population with great efficiency.

Although, the use of "Nesidiocoris tenuis" as a biologic solution for "tuta absoluta" didn't have much success in Almería. The main reason is that for releases made some weeks after plantation, the population created wasn't big enough to stop the first "tuta" and "white fly" that got into the greenhouse. In the case of later releases, the arrival of low temperatures in Autumn slowed down even more the development of this bug.

Starting 2009, Koppert started the development of the strategy of realising this bug in the seedbed, with the objective of taking plants to the greenhouse with a population large enough that allows the control of disease from the first weeks of cultivation. The results were conclusive: releasing the "Nesidiocoris tenuis" in the seedbed in the correct doses, the adequate food and a good handling, allows a population large enough to kill the main tomato diseases from the start. At last, a biologic solution that is trustworthy and profitable can be applied in cultivations in the most important greenhouse of Almeria.

Utiliser moins de pesticides dans les cultures agricoles, c'est bien. Encore faut-il trouver des solutions pérennes et efficaces pour les remplacer. A Sophia Antipolis, des chercheurs de l'Institut national de recherche agronomique (Inra) étudient dans une nouvelle serre high-tech « hautement contrôlable » comment des petites bêtes, appelées auxiliaires, ou bio-défenseurs, « peuvent évoluer au mieux sur les plantes », explique Alexandre Bout, entomologiste à l'Inra. « L'utilisation de produits chimiques entraînait des écosystèmes simples, avec peu de parasites, détaille cet expert. En utiliser moins signifie le retour de ces bio-agresseurs en quantité plus importante. Ici, nous testons de nouvelles espèces d'auxiliaires pour lutter contre ces parasites et développer de nouvelles stratégies de protection qui tiennent dans le temps, économiquement viables et qui permettent de préserver l'environnement », ajoute-t-il.

« Flux d'air contrôlés »Et c'est grâce à cette nouvelle « Mésocosme », bâtiment vitré à mi-chemin entre la paillasse de laboratoire et la serre classique, que les scientifiques de l'Inra peuvent mener des expérimentations très précises. « En légère sur-pression, nous disposons de huit compartiments avec un système de brumisation très fine, où la température et les flux d'air sont étroitement contrôlés », indique Alexandre Bout. Derrière ces parois vitrées, ce sont des plants de tomates qui dorment actuellement sous des drôles de moustiquaires. Les interactions entre des « auxiliaires » et des ravageurs comme le fameux Tuta absoluta, papillon mangeur de tomates, y sont observées. Des techniques qui, une fois validées, pourront être lancées in situ, dans les champs des agriculteurs azuréens, avec qui l'Inra collabore étroitement.
