One phone call today says a lot to me about what is really happening to education. Within a few minutes I had a new student. This is not a rare event and I suppose being so easy to reach is a good thing, both for for parents eager to help their children do well and for Tutor Help. The difference I see today is that some parents are quicker to spend money buying a mobile device or a gadget, than they are to spend money on their children's education. I agree everyone has the right to make that choice, but the consequences can affect those children for a life time. It's the difference between struggling to learn and getting good grades in school and even, escaping the poverty trap.

Missing the Basics and the Poverty Trap

Education is closely tied to getting a well-paying job and social economic status. Usually the parents that pay for tutoring are either well-educated themselves, or understand the benefits. The people that do not get a tutor when they need to one, will watch their children struggle and do nothing, and the children will most likely repeat the performance with their children, as we tend to become more like our parents as we mature.

The writing is on the wall and it says - "the times they are a changing". Once upon a time you could leave school at 14 and get a laboring job and somehow survive. Those days are gone. Today we live in a rapidly changing world and we must have new skills. Reading and writing skills are basic. If you don't have them you will be caught in the poverty trap. Even if you have them, they may not save you.

Applying the Basics

The reason is that you need to find a way to pay the bills and the likeliest way is by learning to apply new skills to solve problems. You must also have the skills that the new world wants and seeming we love technology and it rules our lives, the chances are that you will either be affected by it, develop it, or use it to earn your living. In order to do this it means going way beyond reading and writing and anything you learned at school.

Do parents understand this? I doubt it, because education does not have the same importance in the eyes of ordinary people as for example, "sport". It's a case of some seeing education as LESS important than others and this will lead to some very big errors.

Let me ask a question at this stage: Would you like your doctor to be educated? Would you trust your health to one that has a mediocre education?

Think of these skills as your learning tools. The more you use them the faster you will achieve your goals and you will improve your results.

Are You Proactive or Passive?

Are you a proactive learner? The word, “proactive”, means that you can set your own learning tasks and that you have achieved at least some of the skills of an independent learner. You don’t have to wait for someone to tell you what to do next; instead you are able to plan and execute your learning plan. The proactive learner sets their own questions and recognizes that there are many ways to find out the answers to their questions.

If you are not using all the resources around you, then you are on your own and that can be hard when you are learning a new language and trying to gain mastery of the language.

It’s important that you use as many resources as possible to help you achieve mastery. Your teachers are your first valuable resource and your first step is to learn to ask questions.

Were you familiar with the language of the subject?

Let’s face it – if you don’t know the language of the subject you are going to fail in gaining an understanding of the concepts.

Each Subject has its Own Language!

In order to gain the most marks, focus on the most important words in the statement or question.

The important words are known as keywords and keywords are broken up into two main groups: process words and content words.

Keywords

Keywords are the nouns in the assignment question or statement and process words tell you what to do.

Before you tackle your assignment, make sure to research each of these words and take notes so that you understand them fully. These words are important and you must focus on them to gain the most marks.

You cannot understand a subject if you do not understand the language of the subject. Create definitions and notes on the important words for each subject you are studying. Learn your definitions and keep a record of words that you discover as you study.

Each content word should be the start of your research into the topic and the way to produce meaningful research notes on specific points for the assignment.

Process Words

Process words explain what the reader should do. For example you may be asked to, “discuss”, “explain” or “compare”.

What do they mean? Record each word and it’s meaning by looking them up in the dictionary to get a clear concise explanation.

Contrast is an interesting process word. When this word pops up in your assignment you are meant to say how one thing is the SAME or DIFFERENT to the other. We are basically comparing things.

Your Preparation

If you are interested in winning the intellectual game of writing then make sure you prepare well. All games require preparation and an understanding of the rules.

READ THE QUESTION

Collecting Data

Next, prepare by researching your keywords. You are not going to create your introduction. You are not going to create the body of your essay or your conclusion.

You are going to prepare your notes! Become an expert on the topic. Read as many on-topic resources as you can find, dealing with your topic and record your most important observations, understandings and examples. This is how you prepare to write something meaningful.

Organizing Data

Now that you have created your notes make sure to label everything and organize these notes according to your important keywords or key ideas. This way you can locate information for your essay quickly.

Presentation

Creating your presentation is the next task and the assignment should give you a clear idea of how to present your answer. Let’s just assume you are writing an essay that will have three major parts: firstly the introduction and a possible thesis(what you think the answer should be), a body(containing the arguments – major essay points) and lastly the conclusion.

Quick Start Guide

1. Brainstorm – write your thoughts and questions.
2. Research and answer your own questions.
3. Create your thesis. Pick the major essay points you will use as your answer.
4. Create your essay structure and sequence of ideas.
5. Write your first draft.
6. Edit your draft. Correct poor paragraph sentences, making sure each paragraph deals with one topic idea. Poor spelling and punctuation make you look bad so make sure to ask someone else to proof read your work after you have completed the job.
7. Re-draft your essay until you think you have achieved the mark you want.

PARAGRAPHS

Why are paragraphs so easy to write? The answer is that a paragraph deals with ONE main idea. If you get sidetracked your writing ends up looking like a kitchen after dinner – a mess!

Firstly, start with your main idea sentence. Now that you have the introduction sentence or topic sentence discuss it. Introduce examples and proof. Explain the importance and relevance of this key idea and end with a concluding sentence that will logically lead on to the next point.

Using keywords to organize information is the system that is used on the internet. We can start our search providing we have a relevant keyword that states our topic of interest and then we use a search engine like, Google, to help us locate relevant information about our keyword.

Doing research is so much easier than using the local library, when we use the biggest library on the planet - the internet! Just keep in mind that it is always hard to verify the truth in the resources you may find, but this has always been the case anyway. We do have to use a measure of trust and skepticism.

Not everyone uses information backed by research, but often case studies can supply a measure of proof that is sufficient for most investigations. Doing assignments is something that makes most students anxious and this following article may help if you are learning something new or re-training for a new line of work.

Read the Question Carefully

Each subject has its own language and in order to gain the most marks, focus on the most important words in the statement or question. These important words are known as keywords and keywords are broken up into two main groups: process words and content words.

Keywords

Keywords are the nouns in the assignment question or statement and process words tell you what to do.

Before you tackle your assignment, make sure to research each of these words and take notes so that you understand them fully. These words are important and you must focus on them to gain the most marks.

You cannot understand a subject if you do not understand the language of the subject. Create definitions and notes on the important words for each subject you are studying. Learn your definitions and keep a record of words that you discover as you study.

Each content word should be the start of your research into the topic and the way to produce meaningful research notes on specific points for the assignment.

Process Words

Process words explain what the reader should do. For example you may be asked to, “discuss”, “explain” or “compare”.

What do they mean? Record each word and it’s meaning by looking them up in the dictionary to get a clear concise explanation.

Contrast is an interesting process word. When this word pops up in your assignment you are meant to say how one thing is the SAME or DIFFERENT to the other. We are basically comparing things.

Collecting Data

Next, prepare by researching your keywords. You are not going to create your introduction. You are not going to create the body of your essay or your conclusion.

You are going to prepare your notes! Become an expert on the topic. Read as many on-topic resources as you can find, dealing with your topic and record your most important observations, understandings and examples. This is how you prepare to write something meaningful.

Organizing Data

Now that you have created your notes make sure to label everything and organize these notes according to your important keywords or key ideas. This way you can locate information for your essay quickly.

Presentation

Creating your presentation is the next task and the assignment should give you a clear idea of how to present your answer. Let’s just assume you are writing an essay that will have three major parts: firstly the introduction and a possible thesis(what you think the answer should be), a body(containing the arguments – major essay points) and lastly the conclusion.
