Russian artist Stanislav Aristov creates miniature sculptures by bending matches and fire, into a desired shape.

A matchstick is something so ordinary and simple that one could hardly imagine it could become an object of art.

Aristov unveils the artistic potential of matches in his his "Спички / matchsticks" series.

This photographer literally plays with fire by bending the matches into the desired shapes as they burn, then uses a macro lens and a studio flash to shoot the fire and the smoke around it.

The artist then moves to Photoshop to finish the image.

Stanislav says that the idea came to him completely by accident:

"I was playing with a pack of matches while I was deciding what to photograph for a competition.

It was while I was watching the match that I began to think of how it represents life.

There is the burnt part representing the past, the smoke of memories left and the untouched part of the match the future".

Stanislav Aristov è un fotografo che vive a Ekaterinburg, in Russia.

Nato nel 1982, ha creato una straordinaria serie di immagini utilizzando fiammiferi.

L'idea di usare fiammiferi accesi gli è venuta mentre partecipava a un concorso fotografico di Formula Foto sul tema della linea della vita.

Questo "colpo di genio", o come dice lo stesso Stanislav, "non è la prima volta che ho un'idea che ne rivela un'altra", ci ricorda la profonda poesia che il fuoco racchiude nell'inconscio collettivo.

Irina Karkabi, 1960 | Romantic painter

Ukrainian artist Irina Vitalievna Karkabi was born in Kharkov, Ukraine.

Her artistic talent was noticed by those around her in early childhood.

In 1982, almost immediately after graduating from the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, she, along with her husband and newborn son, moved to the city of Haifa in northern Israel (occupied palestine), where she settled on the seashore.

There, at the Mediterranean crossroads of cultural ideas and artistic trends, Irina founded her studio.

She paints exclusively in oil on canvas.

The artist has repeatedly participated in international exhibitions, for example, at the Art Expo in New York and Los Angeles.

Her works are in private collections in Israel, the USA and Europe.

Early in her career, Irina wrote posters for the theater and illustrated children's books many times.

Irina's paintings explore the secrets of love and female beauty.

Dynamism, sensuality, expression, femininity, dreaminess, romance, charm - all this is reflected in the artist's paintings.

Based on the knowledge gained at the Academy in St. Petersburg and her own research on the work of the masters of the past of Greece, Egypt and works in the Art Nouveau style, she skillfully combines classical beauty with modern symbolism.

Her eternal, most often female, images echoing with sensuality, explore the depths of the human psyche.

Today she works mainly on commissioned portraits, landscapes, still-life and figurative art.

Her portrait work "Abu Muhammad: A Palestinian Worker" has been selected for the exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery in London of this year.

The work was selected for the prestigious BP Award portrait competition.

The judges selected the final 55 portraits for the exhibition from 2750 to be submitted.

La pittrice Irina Vitalievna Karkabi è nata a Kharkov, in Ucraina.

Il suo talento artistico è stato notato da coloro che la circondavano durante la prima infanzia.

Nel 1982, quasi subito dopo essersi diplomata all'Accademia delle Arti di San Pietroburgo, si trasferì, insieme al marito ed al figlio neonato, nella città di Haifa, nel nord di Israele, dove si stabilì in riva al mare.

Le opere richiamano l’Art Nouveau di Alfons Mucha, le figure delicati di Robert Auer, l’eleganza dorata e geometrica di Gustav Klimt e le pose classiche di Sandro Botticelli - alcune donne si rifanno anche nei loro tratti a La nascita di Venere e La primavera.

Eppure i dipinti di Irina Karkabi non cadono nell'imitazione, ma sono caratterizzati da un tocco personale ed innovativo che li rende immediatamente riconoscibili.

Le donne da lei ritratte sono sì eleganti, ma mai austere come i soggetti di Klimt; la raffinatezza dei dipinti non è altrettanto sfarzosa, ma molto più naturale, floreale; i tratti sono semplici come quelli di Mucha, ma più ricchi di sfumature nei colori; infine, le pose richiamano in alcuni casi la classicità senza apparire pesanti o sorpassate.

Carolina Marques Serpa was born in Porto.

In 1989 she finished her Degree in Law at the Catholic University of Porto and since 1991 teaches at the University of Porto Lusiada.

Devotes himself to painting as an autodidact, running custom portraits.

In 2010 is selected as a finalist for the Prix Carmen Miranda.

While studying at high school, she made charcoal portraits.

In 1989 she graduated in Law at the Catholic University of Porto.

At the same time, she carefully studied some of the great masters of painting, with special emphasis on Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Monet.

During this period, she made several portraits in charcoal, pastel, watercolor and began to develop the technique of oil painting.

She practiced law from 1989 to 1991, when she started his activity as a professor of Public International Law and Community Law at the Lusíada University of Porto.

Despite her involvement in class and the performance of her tasks as a mother, she never failed to perform painting work by order: portrait, landscape and painting based on photographs.

From 2010, he started to dedicate herself almost entirely to painting, preferably using oil and acrylic.

In addition to orders, she has held numerous exhibitions, in Portugal and abroad. It is represented in some national public collections and in numerous national and foreign private collections.

She has worked in collaboration with furniture and decoration companies, executing originals of her own and adapted reproductions of Portuguese painting and tiles.

In 2016, her collection on festivals and pilgrimages in Portugal was used in the booklet for the album “Arrebenta a Festa” by Portuguese singer Roberto Leal.

Her themes are quite varied. In addition to the portrait and the human figure, music and musical movement are important themes.

Since 2011, she has developed a collection dedicated to Portugal’s festivals and pilgrimages.

There are also works dedicated to fado and classical music and ballet.

She also paints everyday scenes, rural and urban landscapes and symbolic / magical realism.

Salvador Dalì | The hallucinogenic toreador, 1969-1970

The Hallucinogenic Toreador (Spanish: El Torero Alucinógeno) is a 1969–1970 multi-leveled oil painting by Salvador Dalí which employs the canons of his particular interpretation of surrealist thought.

It is currently being exhibited at the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

In The Hallucinogenic Toreador Dalí transmits his wife's dislike for bullfighting by combining symbolism, optical illusions, and estranging yet familiar motifs.

Dalí used his paranoiac-critical method to create his own visual language within the painting, and combined versatile images as an instructive example of his artistic ability and vision.

The entire scene is contained within a bullfighting ring, submerged under a barrage of red and yellow tones, alluding tentatively to the colors of the Spanish flag.

In the upper left section we observe a representational portrait of Dalí's wife, Gala, to whom the artist has dedicated this piece.

Her serious, rigid expression could be interpreted as a pictorial representation of her deep-seated dislike for bullfighting.

In the bottom left section there is a pattern of multicolored circles.

This rectangular-shaped burst of colors immediately grasps the viewer's attention and steers it down towards the visibly emerging shape of a dying bull's head (probably Islero), dripping blood and saliva from its mouth.

This pool of blood transforms itself into a sheltered bay where a human figure on a yellow raft comes into sight.

The lower section of the bay takes on the shape of a Dalmatian.

The slain bull slowly rises to become the landscapes of Cap de Creus, around Dalí's living place.

It was said that concern for an increase in tourism led Dalí to embrace its features in the painting.

The mountain is mimicked on the right; however, this time, the mountain bears greater resemblance to the precipitous mountains around the town of Roses, near Dalí's studio.

An old anecdote lies behind the painter's desire to represent the sculpted figure of Venus de Milo, seen 28 times in the painting.

Salvador Dali and Gala in 1934, Paris

Dalí decided to incorporate these particular silhouettes in his paintings after a visit to New York, where he purchased a box of pencils with a reproduction of the goddess on the cover.

Dalí uses negative spaces to produce an image, alternate and complementary to the Venus de Milo.

This complementary image encourages the eye to contemplate the painting in such a way as to introduce the quasi-hypnotic array of forms that inhabit the canvas.

Examined from a distance, the body of the second Venus reveals the face and torso of the toreador (bullfighter, likely Manolete).

Her breasts as his nose, while her face transforms into his eye.

Their long skirts make up his white shirt and red scarf of the Toreador.

The green layer makes up his necktie. His eye is found within the face of the second Venus.

The soft white area unveils a tear slipping from his eye.

The gadflies of Saint Narcissus of Gerona march over the arena in seemingly straight and parallel lines, forming the cap, hairnet and cape of the toreador.

Situated on the lower right hand corner, the whole spectacle is being watched by an infant boy dressed in a sailor's suit who is said to represent Dalí as a youth.

When the painting was exhibited in a New York City gallery in the late 1960s as a work in progress, it was accompanied by an illustration of the design, matting out the areas not relevant to the Toreador so that he was easier to see.

It was labeled explicitly, "How to see the toreador".

Vincent Van Gogh | Sunset at Montmajour, 1888

Sunset at Montmajour is a landscape in oils painted by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh on 4 July 1888.

It was painted while the artist was at Arles, France and depicts a landscape of garrigue with the ruins of Montmajour Abbey in the background.

The painting is 73.3 cm × 93.3 cm (28.9 in × 36.7 in).

For over 100 years, it was in a Norwegian industrialist's private collection and wrongly assumed to be fake, before being re-examined, authenticated and sold to its current private owner.

The painting was temporarily on display from 24 September 2013 until 12 January 2014 as part of an exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Its authenticity was questioned several times before it was confirmed as a genuine van Gogh work in 2013.

It is the first full-sized painting by Van Gogh to be newly confirmed since 1928

"Yesterday, at sunset, I was on a stony heath where very small, twisted oaks grow, in the background a ruin on the hill, and wheatfields in the valley.

And all the lines were beautiful, the whole scene had a charming nobility.

Tramonto a Montmajour è un dipinto ad olio su tela realizzato nel 1888 dal pittore olandese Vincent van Gogh.

È conservato nel Museo Van Gogh di Amsterdam.

Il quadro ritrae l'abbazia benedettina situata a Montmajour, nel momento del tramonto.

L'attribuzione di tale dipinto al noto artista olandese è stata divulgata il 9 settembre 2013, dal direttore del museo Axel Rüger, dopo due anni di studi.

Il quadro, secondo gli esperti, è stato realizzato nel 1888 durante il soggiorno dell'artista olandese ad Arles, nel Sud della Francia e, prima di essere venduto nel 1901, faceva parte della collezione di Theo Van Gogh, fratello del pittore.

Eva Gonzalès | Impressionist painter

Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883) was a French Impressionist painter.

She was one of the four most notable female Impressionists in the nineteenth century, along with Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), Berthe Morisot (1841-95) and Marie Bracquemond (1840-1916).

Gonzalès began her professional training and took lessons in drawing in 1865, from the society portraitist Charles Chaplin, who was also Mary Cassatt's teacher.

She met Édouard Manet in 1869 and was to become his student, colleague and model.

Manet is said to have begun a portrait of her at once which was completed on 12 March 1870 and exhibited at Salon in that year.

However, this depiction of Gonzales is less than flattering in that her dress, her posture and technique are not actually those of a professional to painting.

The painting that Gonzales is working on is not her own, but actually one of Manet's.

It is currently on display at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

Like her teacher, Édouard Manet, she never exhibited with the Impressionist painters in their controversial exhibitions in Paris, but she is considered part of the group because of her painting style.

She was Manet's only formal student and modeled frequently for several members of the Impressionist school.

Until 1872, she was strongly influenced by Manet but later developed her own, more personal style.

During the Franco-Prussian War she evacuated to Dieppe.

She married the graphic artist Henri Guérard, and used him and her sister Jeanne Gonzales as the subjects for many of her paintings.

Her work was exhibited at the offices of the Art review L'Art in 1882 and at the Galerie Georges Petit in 1883.

Her career was cut short when she died in childbirth at the age of thirty-four, exactly six days after the death of her teacher, Manet.

In 1885, after her death a retrospective of 88 works was held at the Salons de La Vie Moderne.

Eva Gonzalès exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1870.

Thereafter she submitted work every year to the Salon.

Although she was always invited to exhibit with the other Impressionists, for some reason she preferred to show her work at the Official Salon.

During the Franco-Prussian War she stayed in Dieppe.

In 1879, she married a brother of the graphic artist Henri Guérard.

Although her career was cut short when she died in childbirth at the age of thirty-four she became known for her characteristic style for portraiture.

She included subtle emotion and richness of detail in her works, such as A Loge in the Théàtre des Italiens (1874), described as one of the most provocative paintings of its day and featured in this exhibition.

After her death, a retrospective was held of eighty eight of her works at the Salons of La Vie Moderne.

La personalità artistica di Eva Gonzalès è una delle più significative e vivaci all'interno del movimento impressionista.

Prima di ogni altra cosa è significativo sottolineare come la Gonzalès sia stata innanzitutto una pittrice.

Si tratta di una peculiarità che acquista ancora maggiore rilevanza alla luce del fatto che la Gonzalès operò nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento, periodo storico in cui la pittura era considerata una prerogativa esclusiva maschile: per citare un fortunato aforisma di Anne Higonnet, «molti artisti potevano pensare di dipingere donne moderne, ma ben pochi potevano immaginare di vedere donne moderne dipingere».

La Gonzalès, oltre a sviluppare e perfezionare il proprio talento pittorico, si ritrovò dunque costretta a lottare contro i pregiudizi di coloro che ritenevano disdicevole la professione di pittrice per una donna: grazie alla sua indole temeraria e inarrestabile, tuttavia, riuscì ad affermare sé stessa e la propria arte in una scena artistica ancora dominata da una logica maschilista.

Se negli esordi il suo stile fu molto posato ed accademico, dopo l'approdo impressionista la sua pittura si risolse in un drastico mutamento tematico e stilistico.

Innanzitutto, complice anche il discepolato con Manet, la Gonzalès nelle sue opere cercò per prima cosa di catturare i momenti fuggevoli della quotidianità, nel segno di un'aderenza al vero sobria ma vigorosa, e di una rivalutazione figurativa della bellezza della vita di tutti i giorni.

Ciò è evidente soprattutto nel Risveglio del mattino, dove la Gonzalès cerca di cogliere quella gioia effimera che si prova nel risveglio mattutino, o in La modista, dove una ragazza elegantemente vestita, inizialmente assorta nella scelta di un accessorio in un negozio, viene distratta da un evento improvviso, cui rivolge uno sguardo emblematico.

Si riscontra, in tal senso, il desiderio squisitamente impressionista di «fissare qualcosa di ciò che passa» ricorrendo alla suadente fluidità della luce.

Questo orientamento pittorico, tuttavia, lascerà il posto nella tarda maturità a uno stile più audace e autonomo, che troverà una delle espressioni più alte nel dipinto del 1882 denominato Nel giardino, dove la figura ritratta si dissolve completamente nel colore, con esiti innovativi che lasciano presagire sviluppi interrotti dalla morte.

Dal punto di vista tecnico, invece, la serenità delle scene raffigurate dalla Gonzalès viene costruita con toni fluidi e sfumati, applicati sulla tela con pennellate rapide e prensili alla luce, il cui carattere intimista viene esaltato dai tagli fotografici, vicini a quelli dell'impressionista Degas.

I toni, spesso scuri, si schiariscono notevolmente nei pastelli.

I dipinti della Gonzalès, in particolare, raccontano con una «délicatesse instinctive de femme» (per usare le parole del critico Mirabeau) un universo tipicamente muliebre, colto anche nei suoi aspetti apparentemente più insignificanti e ordinari: ne La nutrice, per esempio, il soggetto del dipinto non è una donna mondana, o magari una personalità celebre, bensì una semplice eppur dignitosissima bambinaia colta mentre riposa serenamente in un parco.

Molti dei suoi dipinti, inoltre, si rivolgono allo spazio femminile della casa, raffigurando donne colte nell'intimità del loro focolare domestico, sull'esempio della collega Berthe Morisot: si veda, a titolo di esempio, il dipinto Le Petit Lever, nel quale è raffigurata una donna vestita con una sottoveste bianca che si lascia pettinare i capelli da un'acconciatrice.

Se composizioni similari in passato erano sature di erotismo e di sensualità, la Gonzalès dà vita a un dipinto che illustra sapientemente la riservatezza e la discrezione della toilette mattutina.

Un effetto analogo si riscontra nel suo Ritratto della madre: se altri pittori del passato che si erano confrontati con questo tema avevano restituito immagini che, per la loro grazia esagerata e innaturale, risultavano inopportune o persino fastidiose, la Gonzalès evita ogni qualsivoglia sentimentalismo creando una composizione sobria ed elegante, arpeggiata sulle armonie del nero della veste della donna e sull'indefinitezza dello sfondo, accennato da pennellate rapide e corsive.

Antonio Canova | Drawing

Antonio Canova (1757-1822) used graphic drawings as the essential foundation for his Neoclassical marble masterpieces.

His sketches acted as a direct window into his creative process, transitioning from rapid, emotional thoughts into highly calculated, geometric structures.

Unlike his highly polished marbles, his initial sketches features rapid, loose, and gestural ink strokes.

He heavily used charcoal wash and cross-hatching to map out how light would fall on the three-dimensional stone surface.

His drawings fall into two main categories: figure anatomical studies and academic preparatory sketches for large funeral monuments.

Born in Taipei, Tawain, Chinese painter Tony Chow was obvious that he showed an appreciation for the masters.

At the age of 11, Tony’s interest sprang a dedication to express his talents on canvas as well as an understanding to the motives behind such masterpieces.

Tony came to the United Stated in 1995.

He received a B.A. in Fine Art from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California in 2000.

From here, his interest and talents developed into a unique style all his own.

Tony’s subjects include contemporary women and a careful depiction of the sculptures of masters.

Perhaps there is an intentional portrayal of a unique relationship between these sculptures and the subject.

It’s as if time has paused to glance at his bold strokes, with an intriguing blend of past and present.

Through his tedious process of layers and textures filled with balance and color, his canvas come together with a beautiful multi-layered surface that depicts emotion from all who view his work.

Nato a Taipei, Taiwan, il pittore cinese Tony Chow ha dimostrato fin da piccolo una profonda ammirazione per i grandi maestri.

All'età di 11 anni, l'interesse di Tony si è trasformato nella dedizione ad esprimere il suo talento su tela, nonché nella comprensione delle motivazioni che si celano dietro tali capolavori.

Tony si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti nel 1995.

Nel 2000 ha conseguito una laurea in Belle Arti presso l'Art Center College of Design di Pasadena, in California.

Da qui, il suo interesse ed il suo talento si sono sviluppati in uno stile unico e personale.

Bruno Catalano è uno scultore Franco-Italiano di fama internazionale, celebre per la serie di sculture in bronzo intitolata "Les Voyageurs" (I Viaggiatori).

Catalano è nato a Khouribga, Marocco.

La sua vita è stata segnata da un profondo senso di sradicamento: all'età di 15 anni fu costretto all'esilio dal Marocco insieme alla sua famiglia, sbarcando a Marsiglia con la speranza di una nuova vita.

Prima di dedicarsi interamente all'arte a 30 anni, ha lavorato come marinaio ed elettricista.

Influenzato da maestri come Rodin, Giacometti e César, ha sviluppato una tecnica unica che gli permette di creare figure umane con ampie porzioni del corpo mancanti, sfidando apparentemente le leggi della fisica.

Le sue opere, realizzate in bronzo, grazie al successo internazionale che hanno avuto, fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private presenti ormai in tutto il mondo: Francia, Belgio, Inghilterra, Cina, Svizzera e Stati uniti.

Ha avuto molto successo ed è diventata famosa soprattutto la sua serie di sculture intitolata "Les voyageurs", ossia "I viaggiatori"; queste opere consistono essenzialmente in personaggi, più precisamente viaggiatori, svuotati o incompleti, a seconda dell’interpretazione: aspettano con pazienza, camminano di fretta o cercano qualcosa che solo loro sanno, con l’immancabile valigia dietro.

Ad una prima occhiata, lo stile di Catalano può certamente destabilizzare ed in questo modo catturare l’attenzione dello spettatore; quest’ultimo, però, non è uno spettatore passivo, ma egli può, anzi deve, in un certo senso completare la scultura con la propria immaginazione.

In questo modo nasce quello speciale rapporto privato e personale tra l’osservatore e l’opera d’arte, dove l’uno completa l’altro e viceversa.

Catalano impiega dai 15-20 giorni per realizzare una scultura modellando l’argilla prima, la colatura in bronzo poi.

Le sue statue sono corpi vuoti, sembrano aver perso ogni organo vitale.

Le sagome si completano con il tessuto urbano, facendo intravedere paesaggi e scorci a seconda della nostra immaginazione.

Mentre le statue classiche possono essere viste da diversi punti di vista, quelle di Catalano stravolgono il concetto di "tutto tondo" a cui siamo abituati.

Le sue sculture, ampliano il concetto di tridimensionalità arrivando ad una quarta dimensione che crea il vuoto nello spazio.

Ciò che le accomuna, poi, è la presenza di un bagaglio a mano, e non a caso le troviamo nei luoghi di transito, porti di mare, piazze, aeroporti.

Gli uomini e le donne di Bruno Catalano, "Les Voyagers", sono cittadini del mondo.

Da qui la sua evidente attenzione per il tema del viaggio, dei viaggiatori, del significato simbolico ed intrinseco del viaggio, inteso come arricchimento e come perdita; nei loro viaggi perdono qualcosa di se stessi per lasciare a noi spettatori di immaginare cosa c’è nei loro vuoti.

Hanno il passo stanco, aggravato dal peso della valigia, camminano per la città o aspettano seduti su una panchina.

Malgrado il loro vuoto, però sono corpi in grado di restare in piedi, hanno lo sguardo interiore e procedono con passo incerto.

La decisa mancanza di volume invita lo spettatore a perdersi nello sfondo o, in alternativa, a completare il disegno.

Ma il vuoto è proprio lì, all'altezza degli organi vitali e bisogna imparare a conviverci.

“Nel mio lavoro, sono alla ricerca del movimento e dell’espressione dei sentimenti; faccio emergere dall’inerzia nuove forme e riesco a levigarle fino a dare loro nuova vita. The Cappella Paolina (the Pauline Chapel) is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, Vatican City.

It is separated from the Sistine Chapel by the Sala Regia.

It is not on any of the regular tourist itineraries.

Michelangelo's two frescoes in the Cappella Paolina, The Conversion of Saul and The Crucifixion of St Peter were painted from 1542 to 1549, the height of his fame, but were widely viewed as disappointments and even failures by their contemporary audience.
