David Hockney (9 July 1937 - 11 June 2026) was a British painter, printmaker, stage designer and photographer.

As an important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century.

He began this style of art by taking Polaroid photographs of one subject and arranging them into a grid layout.

The subject would actually move while being photographed so that the piece would show the movements of the subject seen from the photographer’s perspective.

In later works, Hockney changed his technique and moved the camera around the subject instead. He also made prints, portraits of friends, and stage designs for the Royal Court Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Even though his painting and photographic works does not show synesthesia, he still uses it as a base principle in the stage construction for ballets and operas. Using it as an advantage, David Hockney bases the background colors and lighting upon his own seen colors while listening to the music of the theater piece he is working on.

On July 9th of the year 1937, Hockney was born with synesthesia, a condition where he sees synesthetic colors to musical stimuli, in Bradford.

While attending the Royal College of Art in London, he was featured in the exhibition, Young Contemporaries, that announced the beginning of British Pop Art.

David soon became more associated in the movement, and in 1963 Hockney visited New York, making contact with Andy Warhol. A later visit to California inspired Hockney to make a series of paintings of swimming pools in Los Angeles, using the comparatively new Acrylic medium and rendered in a highly realistic style using vibrant colours.

In 1967, his painting, Peter Getting Out Of Nick’s Pool, won the John Moores Painting Priz🎨 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

David Hockney is known for his work with photo collage; using varying numbers of small Polaroid snaps or photolab-prints of a single subject, Hockney arranged a patchwork to make a composite image.

Because these photographs are taken from different perspectives and at slightly different times, the result is work that has an affinity with Cubism, which was one of Hockney’s major aims, discussing the way human vision works.

On 15 November 2018, Hockney's 1972 work Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold at Christie's auction house in New York City for $90 million (£70 million), becoming the most expensive work by a living artist sold at auction.

This broke the previous record, set by the 2013 sale of Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog (Orange) for $58.4 million.

Hockney held this record until 15 May 2019, Jeff Koons reclaimed the honour when his Rabbit sold for more than $91 million at Christie's in New York.

Hockney died at his home in London, on 11 June 2026, aged 88.

King Charles III paid tribute to Hockney, describing him as:

"a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through, and a dear friend and inspiration to so many".

Prime minister Keir Starmer also paid tribute, with a spokesman saying:

"The prime minister is saddened to hear of the death of David Hockney, one of Britain's most celebrated artists".

Tra i più noti ed affermati artisti contemporanei, Hockney diviene uno dei principali esponenti della Pop art anglosassone dall'inizio degli anni sessanta.

Viaggiò spesso per gli Stati Uniti, si trasferisce poi stabilmente in California.

Fa dell'elemento figurativo il cardine della propria produzione artistica, che non si limita alla pittura.

Fu infatti incisore, disegnatore e ritrattista, nonché fotografo ed autore di alcuni collage fotografici realizzati con le Polaroid.

Hockney fu anche scenografo.

Lavorò all'Ubu re di Alfred Jarry, allestito al Royal Court Theatre di Londra nel 1963.

Negli anni settanta realizza le scenografie de La carriera di un libertino per il Glyndebourne Festival Opera del 1974, e de Il flauto magico al Metropolitan Opera di New York nel 1978.

Nel 1994 disegna i costumi della Turandot messa in scena alla San Francisco Opera.

Il 16 novembre 2018 il suo dipinto "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" è battuto all'asta da Christie's per la cifra record di 90,3 milioni di dollari, divenendo l'opera d'arte più costosa realizzata da un artista vivente, fino al 16 maggio 2019 quando la scultura Rabbit di Jeff Koons viene venduta a 91,1 milioni.

Hockney era apertamente gay, e nella sua ritrattistica ha più volte esplorato la natura dell’amore omosessuale.

Ad esempio il dipinto “We Two Boys Together Clinging” (1961), che prende il nome da una poesia di Walt Whitman, ha come oggetto l’amore per gli uomini.

Nel 1963, nel quadro “Domestic Scene, Los Angeles” ritrasse insieme due uomini mentre uno lava la schiena dell’altro.

Nell’estate del 1966, mentre insegnava all’UCLA, incontró Peter Schlesinger, uno studente d’arte che posava per ritratti e disegni, ed intrattenne con lui una relazione amorosa.

Came from an artistic family, the still life Dutch painter Gerardina Jacoba Van de Sande Bakhuyzen (1826-1895), was a 19th-century painter from the Northern Netherlands.

Her father was the painter Hendrik Van de Sande Bakhuyzen, and her brother was the painter Julius Jacobus Van de Sande Bakhuyzen.

Gerardina was taught by her father, as were all her numerous sisters.

She achieved great success with her oils and watercolours of flowers and still lives, winning numerous medals between 1870-1880, in which year she had an exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in London.

Gerardine Jacoba was exceptionally unique for a 19th-century woman because she operated as a fierce, completely independent businesswoman.

She never married and personally negotiated all sales and contracts with art collectors and dealers.

She was deeply integrated into the Dutch art scene, regularly exhibiting at the Exhibitions of Living Masters (Tentoonstelling van Levende Meesters).

In 1861, she was named an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.

She later co-founded the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij (Dutch Drawing Society) in 1876 and joined the prestigious Arti et Amicitiae society in 1879.

Today, her original works can be viewed in prominent institutions like the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Considerato tra i maggiori intellettuali Italiani del Novecento, culturalmente versatile, Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) si distinse in numerosi campi, lasciando contributi come pittore, romanziere, linguista, traduttore e saggista.

Pasolini è stato un pittore prolifico ed appassionato, un aspetto della sua produzione artistica che ha affiancato la poesia, la letteratura ed il cinema per tutta la vita.

Questa attività, a lungo considerata secondaria dalla critica, rappresenta in realtà una chiave d'accesso fondamentale per comprendere la sua intera estetica visiva.

Pasolini amò visceralmente la pittura.

Pasolini iniziò a dipingere precocemente alla fine degli anni Trenta.

Durante gli studi all'Università di Bologna frequentò le lezioni del celebre storico dell'arte Roberto Longhi, la cui estetica influenzò profondamente il suo modo di guardare la luce e le forme.

I suoi dipinti giovanili presentano una forte matrice espressionista, che risente sia della Scuola Romana sia di maestri come Van Gogh e Picasso.

L'evoluzione artistica e lo stile

La produzione pittorica di Pasolini si sviluppa dagli anni Quaranta fino all'anno della sua morte, il 1975.

Il suo percorso si può dividere in due macro-fasi:

Il periodo friulano (Anni '40-'50): Inizia a dipingere precocemente a Casarsa della Delizia.

Le opere di questa fase, fortemente legate ai paesaggi rurali ed al mondo contadino, mostrano un'impronta espressionista influenzata da maestri come Van Gogh e dalle correnti della Scuola Romana.

Sperimenta già con supporti poveri come carta o cartoncini, trattandoli con materiali particolari per alterarne l'opacità e la luce.

La maturità ed i ritratti (Anni '60-'70): Trasferitosi a Roma, la pittura diventa una pratica più intima e immediata.

Si concentra quasi esclusivamente sul genere del ritratto e dell'autoritratto, ridefinendo la tecnica in chiave non accademica.

Nel 1969, ad esempio, realizza una celebre serie di disegni dedicati a Maria Callas utilizzando materiali organici come colla, terra, succhi di erbe, champagne e petali di rosa.

Sebbene Pasolini vedesse il suo dipinto come un laboratorio profondamente privato ed intimo, la sua produzione superò i 150 pezzi documentati.

Il più grande archivio permanente della sua arte visiva è conservato dall'Archivio Contemporaneo del Gabinetto Vieusseux di Firenze.

Roger Desoutter | Maritime painter

Roger Charles Desoutter RSMA (1923-2020) was a prominent British marine and landscape painter recognized for his highly detailed, atmospheric depictions of sailing ships, coastal waters and rural scenes.

Balancing technical accuracy with a profound appreciation for natural light, he became a regular exhibitor and respected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA).

Born and educated at Mill Hill Desoutter went on to obtain a degree in engineering at Loughborough; after which he was chosen, in 1942, to join the team of Sir Frank Whittle, engaged in the design and development of the first jet engines, which occupied him until 1945.

Most of his spare time during this period was making sketches in pen and ink, and pastels, as well as producing technical drawings for engineering publications.

He had to abandon all hopes of a full-time artistic career in 1947, when the unexpected death of his father necessitated his joining the family engineering business of which he is now Chairman.

He married in 1950, and was encouraged by his wife to devote all his spare moments to the study of oil painting, resulting in a number of his works being exhibited and sold for the first time at the Guildhall Annual Exhibition of the Society of Aviation Artists in 1955.

In the years to come, Desoutter sought to extend his talents in painting and turned his attentions from aeronautical studies to encompass landscape and marine subjects.

Inspiration for many of his landscapes was drawn from his experiences as a child spent with his French parents, his grandfather originally emigrated from Normandy in 1888.

He was greatly affected by the feeling of space and the endless vistas of the flat countryside, and tall sentinel rows of poplars lining the avenues that wound away to the horizon.

Vladimir Kush, painter and sculptor, was born in Russia, in a one-story wooden house near the Moscow forest-park Sokolniki.

At the age of seven Vladimir began to attend art school until late evening where he became acquainted with the works of great artists of the Renaissance, famous Impressionists and Modern Artists.

Vladimir entered the Moscow Higher Art and Craft School at age 17, but a year later he was conscripted.

After six months of military training the unit commander thought it more appropriate to employ him exclusively for peaceful purposes, namely, painting propagandistic posters.

After military service and graduating the Institute of Fine Arts, Vladimir painted portraits on Arbat Street to support his family during the hard times in Russia.

In the year 1987, Vladimir began to take part in exhibitions organized by the Union of Artists.

At a show in Coburg, Germany in 1990, nearly all his displayed paintings sold and after closing the exhibition, he flew to Los Angeles where 20 of his works were exhibited and began his “American Odyssey”.

In Los Angeles, Kush worked in a small, rented home garage, but was unable to find a place to display his paintings.

He earned money by drawing portraits on the Santa Monica pier and eventually was able to purchase a ticket to his “Promised Land”, Hawaii.

In 1993, a dealer from France noticed the originality of Kush’s work and organized an exhibition in Hong Kong.

Success surpassed all expectations. In 1995, a new exhibition in Hong Kong at the Mandarin Fine Art Gallery brought more success.

In 1997 he had a new start in the USA exhibiting in the galleries in Lahaina, Hawaii and in Seattle.

In 2001 Kush opened his first gallery, Kush Fine Art in Lahaina, Hawaii.

He now has 4 gallery locations in the USA with future plans to open more galleries around the world.

French painter Paul Signac (1863-1935) was born in Paris.

He followed a course of training in architecture before deciding at the age of 18 to pursue a career as a painter.

He sailed around the coasts of Europe, painting the landscapes he encountered.

He also painted scenes of cities in France in his later years.

In 1884 he met Claude Monet and Georges Seurat.

He was struck by the systematic working methods of Seurat and by his theory of colours and became Seurat's faithful supporter.

Under his influence he abandoned the short brushstrokes of impressionism to experiment with scientifically juxtaposed small dots of pure colour, intended to combine and blend not on the canvas but in the viewer's eye, the defining feature of Pointillism.

Many of Signac's paintings are of the French coast.

He left the capital each summer, to stay in the south of France in the village of Collioure or at St. Tropez, where he bought a house and invited his friends.

In March 1889, he visited Vincent van Gogh at Arles.

The next year he made a short trip to Italy, seeing Genoa, Florence and Naples.

Signac loved sailing and began to travel in 1892, sailing a small boat to almost all the ports of France, to Holland, and around the Mediterranean as far as Constantinople, basing his boat at St. Tropez, which he "discovered".

From his various ports of call, Signac brought back vibrant, colourful watercolors, sketched rapidly from nature.

From these sketches, he painted large studio canvases that are carefully worked out in small, mosaic-like squares of color, quite different from the tiny, variegated dots previously used by Seurat.

Signac himself experimented with various media. As well as oil paintings and watercolours he made etchings, lithographs, and many pen-and-ink sketches composed of small, laborious dots.

The Neo-impressionists influenced the next generation: Signac inspired Henri Matisse and Andre Derain in particular, thus playing a decisive role in the evolution of Fauvism.

As president of the Societe des Artistes Independants from 1908 until his death, Signac encouraged younger artists -he was the first to buy a painting by Matisse, by exhibiting the controversial works of the Fauves and the Cubists.

Tranquillo Cremona (10 April 1837 - 10 June 1878) was an Italian painter.

He was born in Pavia and was the brother of the mathematician Luigi Cremona.

He trained as a young man with Giovanni Carnovali. He lived in Venice from 1852-1859.

Cremona moved to Milan and he became part of the Scapigliatura movement which was characterized by bohemian attitudes and included poets, writers, musicians and artists infused with a combination of rebellious, and later anti-academic and anarchic, tendencies.

His paintings have a windswept style, lacking the linearity of Hayez and other academics and reminiscent of the Venice School and Titian.

Among Cremona's contemporaries in this movement were Giuseppe Rovani, Corrado Bozzoni, Antonio Tantardini, Giuseppe Grandi, Ferdinando Fontana and Daniele Ranzoni. His work consisted mostly of portraits, and his subjects were often women.

He also painted grand subjects such as Marco Polo At The Court of Kubla Khan and Scenes from Goethe's Faust.

The brushstrokes often create dazzling figures, scintillating their margins into their surroundings.

His subject's actions often remain cryptic in meaning, other than a transient observation of human encounters and behaviors.

His technique recalls the pittura de tocco e di macchia (painting of touch and dots) practiced by painters such as Titian, Rembrandt, and 18th-century Northern Italian baroque masters such as Crespi, Guardi, Piazzetta, and Bazzani. His two works are in Museo Cantonale d'arte of Lugano.

New editions of the works of the writers and poets of the Scapigliatura often feature Cremona's paintings on their covers.

Cremona died in Milan, at the age of 41, of a sudden intestinal ailment, attributed to intoxication by the oil pigments which he made himself and which he usually tested by spreading them on the bare skin of his arms.

Orfano fin da bambino, fu iniziato al disegno da Giacomo Trecourt (1812-1882), un pittore bergamasco che era amicissimo del conterraneo Giovanni Carnevali, detto "il Piccio".

Al difuori delle aule e delle lezioni, il fanciullo venne in contatto con la pittura del Massacra e del Cornienti, i più noti artisti pavesi in quegli anni.

Si sarebbe forse impigrito nello stretto cerchio di un'ispirazione timida e di una vita provinciale se, quindicenne, non avesse avvicinato, studiato e approfondito il glorioso passato della pittura veneta. A Venezia fu chiamato dal fratellastro Giuseppe.

È da quel 1852 che data veramente la vita artistica del Cremona Egli s'iscrisse all'Accademia di belle arti e vi ebbe maestri il Molmenti, il Grigoletti, lo Zona, il Lipparini.

Il Cremona ha lasciato un testamento delle fatiche e degli entusiasmi che accompagnarono il suo primo soggiorno veneziano: un piccolo libro di disegni acquerellati, posseduto da Luca Beltrami e da lui illustrato in Un maestro: T. Cremona (Milano, 1929).

Accanto a minuziose e appassionate trascrizioni di particolari e di ritmi delle opere del Crivelli, di Gaudenzio Ferrari, del Cerano, sono i primi pensieri plastici de La Presentazione di Marco Polo e degli Amanti alla tomba di Giulietta e Romeo, i quadri del suo esordio, dipinti intorno al 1860.

Nel '59 aveva lasciato Venezia per sfuggire agli obblighi della coscrizione austriaca; l'anno dopo frequentava l'accademia di Brera a Milano e aveva compagni alla scuola il Bertini, Ranzoni e Mosè Bianchi.

Ancora la pittura cosiddetta "storica" lo attraeva verso la maniera dell'Hayez. La sua indipendenza artistica si svela più tardi e compiutamente quando nel 1867 espone a Torino I cugini.

Qui il tema storico è abbandonato, il patetico medievaleggiante è sostituito da un'emozione più umana e vitale. Soprattutto è mutata la tecnica. Gl'insegnamenti del Bertini e le influenze dell'Hayez ancora visibili nel Marco Polo giovanetto presentato al Gran Kan dei Tartari, sono qui rinnegati.

Il Cremona si esprime in una maniera sua: i contorni non più rilevati e decisi, le masse vive, fluide nella luce, i movimenti non fissati e rigidi, ma continuanti nella vibrazione del colore, la sensibilità preziosa e delicata come la tavolozza. Il pubblico, prima della critica, applaudì alla nuova pittura.

Il Cremona fu da quel giorno famoso. Le discussioni sull'origine della pittura cremoniana sono di molti anni dopo: taluni vollero attribuirla all'influenza del Ranzoni che sarebbe stato il vero innovatore.

Si può dire che il Cremona fu dei suoi tempi, riassunse per virtù fatale del suo genio le aspirazioni degli altri, rappresentò accanto ai macchiaioli toscani il solo movimento artistico italiano degno di tal nome.

Se la denominazione di "impressionista**" non richiamasse, per equivoco, la famosa scuola innovatrice francese, il Cremona dovrebbe essere definito per eccellenza "impressionista"; egli rappresenta una tendenza che si diparte dal lontano Carnevali e si conclude con la scultura del Grandi, del Bazzaro, del Troubetzkoy e di Medardo Rosso.

Nel decennio della sua fioritura l'arte cremoniana non subì incertezze né arresti.

A I cugini seguirono L'amor materno, il Figlio dell'amore, il Silenzio amoroso, Melodia, In ascolto.

Alla minore attività del Cremona si devono attribuire stupendi acquerelli, miniature e disegni, alcuni dei quali per illustrare opere del Rovani; non ultima prova questa della reciproca stima che unì lo scrittore lombardo e il pittore.

Fino all'Edera, dipinta negli ultimi mesi dal pittore lentamente avvelenatosi stemperando i colori sul braccio e sulla mano ignudi, egli fu fedele a sé stesso.

L'Edera riassume bene lo spirito di una società e di un'epoca, in cui, accanto al pittore, A. Catalani neoromantico vestiva di note i poemi di Wally e di Loreley e A. Boito gli amori di Margherita e di Faust, Rovani rintracciava la poesia e l'anima della vecchia Milano nelle cronache dei Cento anni, Emilio Praga intonava l'elogio funebre alle pie costumanze e alle timide fedi d'un secolo ammalato di noia. Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943), born as Adolf Gustav Thorsen, was a Norwegian sculptor.

Gustav Vigeland occupies a special position among Norwegian sculptors, both in the power of his creative imagination and in his productivity.

He is most associated with the Vigeland installation (Vigelandsanlegget) in Frogner Park, Oslo.

The Vigeland installation made Frogner Park into Norway's most popular tourist attraction, and the park also contains Frogner Manor with the Oslo Museum and the Henriette Wegner Pavilion.

Vigeland was also the designer of the Nobel Peace Prize medal.

In 1921 the City of Oslo decided to demolish the house where Vigeland lived and build a library.

After a long dispute, Vigeland was granted a new building from the city where he could work and live; in exchange, he promised to donate to the city all his subsequent works, including sculptures, drawings, engravings and models.

Vigeland moved to his new studio on Nobels gate in the borough of Frogner during 1924.

His studio was located in the vicinity of Frogner Park, which he had chosen as the definitive location for his fountain.

Over the following twenty years, Vigeland was devoted to the project of an open exhibition of his works, which later turned into what is known as Vigeland Sculpture Arrangement (Vigelandsanlegget) in Frogner Park.

The Vigeland installation features 212 bronze and granite sculptures all designed by Gustav Vigeland.

The sculptures culminate in the famous Monolith (Monolitten), with its 121 figures struggling to reach the top of the sculpture.

Il Parco delle sculture di Vigeland, un'area di circa 320 ettari, si trova all'interno del Frognerparken di Oslo, l'antica Kristiania, in periferia della capitale norvegese.

E' dedicata all'esposizione permanente di sculture, bassorilievi ed opere in ferro battuto dell'artista norvegese Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943).

Disseminate nel Parco Vigeland oltre 200 sculture che ritraggono scene di vita quotidiana.

Il tema di fondo dell'intero parco, il ciclo della vita, dalla nascita e della morte, si articola in cinque aree: Il Cancello, Il Ponte, La Fontana, La Terrazza del Monolite e la Ruota della Vita.

Tutti i sentieri del Parco Vigeland portano all’obelisco, monolite granitico si staglia in cielo per 17 metri, con scolpiti 121 corpi avvinghiati.

Vigeland si occupò anche del design e della progettazione architettonica del parco.

Nel 1921 il comune di Oslo decise di abbattere il vecchio edificio dove si trovava lo studio dello scultore per costruire una biblioteca.

Si arrivò ad un accordo: il comune avrebbe costruito per lui un nuovo edificio destinato a studio ed abitazione, che sarebbe stato trasformato in museo dopo la sua morte.

In cambio, l'artista si impegnava a donare alla città tutti i suoi lavori, sculture, disegni, incisioni, compresi i modelli.

Vigeland si trasferì nel nuovo studio in Kirkeveien nel 1924, a poco distanza dal Parco Frogner, che era stato scelto come luogo definitivo per la realizzazione della fontana.

Nei successivi vent'anni Vigeland si dedicò alla progettazione, alla realizzazione ed all'allestimento dell'area destinata all'esposizione permanente delle sue sculture, che da lui prese il nome di Parco di Vigeland.

Nella casa di Kirkeveien visse e lavorò fino alla morte, nel 1943, e lì ancora riposano le sue ceneri, conservate nella torre.

Come previsto, l'edificio è stato trasformato nel Museo Vigeland, dove sono esposte varie opere dell'artista e tutti i modelli originali in gesso delle sculture del Parco di Vigeland.

Orfeo é un marmo realizzato tra il 1600-1601 dallo scultore Italiano Cristoforo Stati, noto anche come Cristofano da Bracciano (1556-1619).

Attualmente presso il Metropolitan Museum di New York, questo lavoro è stato originariamente realizzato per il Palazzo Corsi di Firenze.

Cristoforo Stati was an Italian sculptor and restorer, also called Cristofano da Bracciano.

He was a little-known sculptor who also worked on the restoration of marble works excavated from archaeological sites.

He trained in Florence in the circle of Bartolomeo Ammanati and Giambologna.

This provided a Mannerist environment in which Stati acquired a good command of his craft and a certain elegance of style.

Only a few of his works have been identified.

These suggest that he was imbued with Classical culture, and wanted to recreate the artistic period that was recognized as a model of perfection: the Classicism of the age of Hadrian.

During his time in Florence, between 1604 and October 1607, he carved the fountain with Samson Stopping the Lion's Mouth (Aranjuez, Jardín de la Isla).

This formed a pair with another group, by Giambologna (Samson and a Philistine, 1565-70; London, Victoria and Albert Museum), which has been identified with a work in the gardens of Aranjuez Palace in Spain.

During the same period he carved the group of Venus and Adonis (Bracciano, Palazzo) which was presented by the artist to his native town, as is attested by an original document held in the Archivio Comunale in Bracciano.

The figure of Adonis takes its inspiration from a Roman copy of a statue of Antinous, while the Venus recalls a Classical type elaborated by Giambologna.

Cristoforo Stati | Venere e Adone, 1600-1610

"Venere e Adone" è una celebre scultura in marmo realizzata dall'artista barocco Cristoforo Stati, databile tra il 1600 ed il 1610 circa.

L'opera è custodita ed esposta all'interno del Museo Civico di Bracciano, presumibilmente donata dallo scultore stesso alla sua città natale..

La scultura ritrae un momento intimo tratto dalle Metamorfosi di Ovidio: l'amore tra la dea della bellezza Venere ed il giovane e bellissimo cacciatore Adone.

Al contrario di altre trasposizioni artistiche focalizzate sul tragico distacco prima della caccia mortale del giovane, l'opera di Stati cattura una dimensione di profonda tenerezza e vicinanza fisica tra i due corpi.

Joachim Patinir, in full Joachim de Patinir, Patinir also spelled Patinier or Patenier, (1485, Bouvignes or Dinan, Namur, Belgium - October 5, 1524, Antwerp), Flemish painter, the first Western artist known to have specialized in landscape painting.

Little is known of his early life, but his work reflects an early knowledge of the painting of Gerard David, the last of the Early Netherlandish painters.

He may have studied under Hiëronymus Bosch, the painter of fantastic allegories and landscapes.

Patinir seems to have made a practice of supplying landscape settings for figure compositions painted by other Flemish masters, but the only known example of his collaborations is The Temptations of St. Anthony the Abbott (1520-24), in which Quentin Massys painted the figures.

Patinir did not, however, paint pure landscape pictures, and all his work has a nominal religious subject.

Its novelty, anticipated in a different vein by Bosch, lay in the fact that the religious motif in such works as Landscape with the Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (c. 1520), St. Christopher (c. 1515-24), and Landscape with St. Jerome (1516-17) was much reduced in scale and immersed in the phenomena of the natural world.

The basic elements of his landscape style - the high viewpoint overlooking vast tracts, where earthy brown foregrounds merge into woodland and meadow greens and again into the hazy blues of distant mountains - do not differ from those of his predecessors, particularly David.

Yet the picturesque melancholy with which he invested the woods and rivers and the great ghostly rocks that jut up abruptly in the middle distance of such paintings as his Baptism of Christ (c. 1515) and his Charon Crossing the Styx (1520-24) strike a personal note that won Patinir instant success and many imitators.

Joachim Patinir, o Patinier o Patiner (Dinat o Bouvignes, 1485 circa - Anversa, 1524), è stato un pittore Fiammingo, principalmente attivo ad Anversa.

Specializzato in paesaggi e soggetti storici, fu uno dei primi specialisti nella rappresentazioni di vedute, raccogliendo l'eredità della scuola danubiana.

Formatosi a Bruges presso Gerard David, si trasferì ad Anversa dove nel 1515 si iscrisse alla locale gilda dei pittori.

Una mancanza quasi assoluta di documentazione sulla sua vita a la sua opera rende particolarmente difficile la ricostruzione della sua attività, aggravata dalla confusione che si è accumulata nei secoli riguardo alle numerose opere non autografe ed alle mediocri derivazioni di seguaci e copisti.

Solamente cinque quadri sono firmati dall'artista, anche se molti altri lavori gli sono stati attribuiti, grazie ad una certa affinità stilistica; a tal riguardo basti pensare che solo il Prado, a Madrid ne espone ventuno.

In gioventù dovette sicuramente guardare alle opere di Hieronymus Bosch, dal quale riprese il gusto visionario e la particolare capacità di evocare scenari fantastici pieni di dettagli realistici assemblati in maniera fantasiosa.

La sua evoluzione artistica lo condusse alla produzione di opere paesaggistiche contenenti figure di grandi dimensioni, fino ad una miniaturizzazione delle stesse, tale da renderle elementi di un microcosmo.

Gradualmente i paesaggi presero il sopravvento, giocati su toni di verde e di blu cobalto, con accesi contrasti tra parti di territorio serenamente abitate e parti selvagge, sconvolte da una natura bizzarra e densa di suggestioni.

Se la sua arte eccelleva, come si è detto, nel paesaggio, più limitato era nella pittura di figure, che considerava certamente un soggetto poco attraente, più che altro un pretesto per mettere in scena le sue ambiziose vedute naturali.

Per questa ragione si legò ai principali maestri anversesi, tra cui in particolare Quentin Metsys, al quale chiese talvolta di dipingere le figure nelle sue opere.

La storia del poema "La nuvola in calzoni" / "Облако в штанах" è collegata all'amore tormentato e non corrisposto del poeta Russo Vladimir Majakovskij (1893-1930) per la scultrice monumentale Russa, Maria Alexandrovna Denisova (1894-1944).

I due si incontrarono nel 1914 ad Odessa, durante il viaggio dei futuristi del 1913.

"La nuvola" è il capolavoro della stagione "prerivoluzionaria" di Majakovskij, uno dei testi più significativi del futurismo russo e della letteratura russa del Novecento.

Composto tra il 1914-1915 da un Majakovskij poco più che ventenne, il poemetto trabocca di una forza lirica tesa, appassionata, che vuole essere dissacrante, antiborghese, antifilistea, ed è soprattutto intensamente libertaria.

Majakovskij vuol portare dentro l'arte della parola la carica dirompente di una visione nuova o rinnovata della realtà, dei sentimenti, dell'idea stessa della poesia e della scrittura.

E lo fa ricorrendo ad un'incalzante sequela di immagini provocatorie, ad un'orchestrazione sonora aspra e dissonante, ad un'arditezza compositiva frutto di una maturità sbalorditivamente precoce.

Il poeta della "Nuvola" cerca disperatamente l'amore di Maria, l'amore tra gli uomini della Terra, l'amore universale tra l'uomo ed il cosmo.

Sogna di vedere cancellata la sofferenza dei reietti e degli oppressi; esalta la ribellione, il tumulto popolare.

Ma davanti a sé non trova che il rifiuto, la desolazione, il silenzio dell'universo (e di Dio).

Cosi, nella colata lavica del poemetto confluiscono via via la passione amorosa, lo spirito di rivolta contro una società ingiusta e violenta, la polemica letteraria, l'ossessiva "lotta con Dio", il doloroso vagheggiamento di una rivoluzione che il poeta sa utopica, perché incapace di riscattare l'uomo".

"The Stranger Song" è uno dei brani più intensi e poeticamente complessi di Leonard Cohen, pubblicato originariamente nel 1967 come quarta traccia del suo iconico album di debutto, Songs of Leonard Cohen.

Il brano si distingue per l'ipnotico schema di fingerpicking sulla chitarra acustica e per un testo ricco di metafore legate al gioco d'azzardo, ai treni ed all'impossibilità di trovare un legame stabile.

E’ vero che tutti gli uomini che conoscevi

in costruzione, sù qualche fiume senza fine.

E dici: “Va bene, il ponte, o da qualche altra parte più tardi”.

E poi, raccogliendo tutti i jolly che si è lasciato dietro,

scopri che non t’ha lasciato molto, neanche una risata.

Come ogni giocatore, stava cercando quella carta

così alta e da sballo

da non aver mai più bisogno di giocare un’altra mano.

Era solo un altro Giuseppe in cerca d’una mangiatoia.
