As recipients of millions of new smartphones and tablets, our pockets and purses in 2011 bulged with media, if not money. As a result, the mediasphere grew ever denser and noisier this year -- a din that only increased as people strove to break through it with deeds that were outrageous, audacious or just plain dumb.

Fox 4 weather forecaster Don Harman took his own life Tuesday, casting a pall Wednesday over Kansas City's top-rated morning newscast. The 41-year-old native of Marietta, Ohio, was found by his wife, Monica Johns, at their south Kansas City home shortly before 5 p.m. Police said the death was a suicide.

People like to say that MTV isn't MTV anymore, but Joe Comparato argues that the original idea behind MTV wasn't sustainable. Comparato's Lawrence-based company, TheCoolTV, takes a different approach. It is a chain of 71 local TV stations, and growing, that draws on a common core of content. Basically, it's music radio with pictures.

If you're a producer on a new network TV show, and you're still churning out episodes come Thanksgiving, this is indeed a time to give thanks. You're not on the phone with your agent looking for a new gig, and those studio paychecks will buy a lot of Christmas cheer. But if you're a viewer, it's a more tenuous time.

Only a fool would hazard a guess as to what might happen on Election Day 2012. But here's a safe prediction: Between now and next November you're going to hear almost nothing about the so-called "wedge issues" that have dominated our national discourse the past decade.

For the first time in history, every radio and TV station, every cable and satellite operator, will interrupt all broadcasts, at 1 p.m. today, for a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. Two years in the planning, the minutelong drill is designed to expose weaknesses in a 60-year-old readiness system that has never been used -- not even on 9/11.

If you enjoyed the first season of AMC's surprise smash hit "The Walking Dead," be assured that the show picks up right where it left off when it returns Sunday in all its cringe-making, nail-biting, gory glory. But the horror show going on behind the scenes at AMC included the well-publicized slashing of "Walking Dead's" budget and dispatching of the show's creator.

"Homeland" is a spare and oftentimes bleak drama about strange, lonely people who prove to be unlikely central players in a plot to attack the United States. So far it sounds like what might happen if a Sundance director made "24," but it's actually one of the best new shows of the season, thanks to grade-A performances by its three stars.

That was the day that Starz, the No. 3 pay-cable service, said it would pull its titles from Netflix when their deal expires in February.
