2012 TVS Apache RTR180 Headlamp

Hi there guys, I am here to give you a comprehensive review of the new RTR 180. Following a string of mixed responses before and after the launch of the new RTR series, and having tested the new RTR 160, I mustered up all the positivity within me to go ahead and check out the new RTR180. When the RTR 180 debuted a few years back, there was a lot of talk about it looking identically same as its younger sibling. Well, TVS has kept all these things in mind – all the feedback regarding the design, the ergonomics, and the engine vibrations while creating the new series.

Unfortunately while the response amongst the enthusiast crowd has been lukewarm ever since the spy pics of the new Apache hit the interweb a couple of weeks before its launch – much of it having to do with no higher displacement engine being introduced, I somehow feel that the 180 looked much better in this new avatar when compared to the 160. I had to wait patiently for the first lot of 180s to arrive here at Hyderabad before I could lay my hands on them. The showroom people were generous enough to allow me to spend adequate time with this mean machine in order to give a detailed review. Here is a section-wise review of my experience with this new beast.

LOOKS:

Much has been talked about the design ever since the spy shots surfaced. There are people who compare the headlamp design to that of a Pulsar and I believe that is true to a certain extent. The similarity is pretty evident on the side view, if not the front. The positive way to look at it is that people at TVS have tried to give it a cosmetic makeover given that the old design was aging. A refreshed look every now and then is a must in the competitive motorcycle industry, but my personal opinion is that, when the first RTR160 came out in 2007, it was well ahead of time with split grab rails, engine cowl, clip-on handle bars, etc. If you would notice even Bajaj took some cues from TVS and came up with clip-ons in its later models. I personally feel the older design was simple yet practical. For a motorcycle, design is crucial – it needs to turn you on the moment you look at it.Having witnessed the older version, knowing what people at TVS were capable of, and given the teaser shots on TVS’s official Facebook page of the twin pilot lamps that looked stunning, the expectations were way too high for not only the Apache fans, but also other biking enthusiasts. The moment the spy shots hit the net, the response was pretty despondent. Many Apache fans and other enthusiasts were shocked by the design. Right from the unusually sized tank shrouds to the unequally yoked dual tone paint job, this new beast was less eye candy. No doubt the beast looks much better in its flesh when compared to the spy pics, but the high expectations came crashing down. Also I personally felt the design was meant for the 180 because the 180 looks more polished and neat with a sensible paint job and gorgeous graphics that blend well with the design – at least much better than that of the 160.

TVS released an official video highlighting the science and art behind its making and justified the unusual size of the tank shrouds by stating that it lessens the engine heat by a phenomenal 10 degrees. This is good, but something seems to have gone wrong somewhere and the pure harmony with which all parts used to come together in the old design is missing in the new one. Also having made so many changes cosmetically, they could have done away with the old tail lamp. The headlamp design, no doubt is good and the show stopper as mentioned before is the pair of pilot lamps. The one thing that was irritating my eyes though was some sort of a round rubbery protrusion on top of the digital console (it is visible in the pics posted). I believe it is there to cover the screw holding the unit together, but it spoils the look. The bottom line is that the 180’s avatar of single tone paint with good graphics is much more inviting when compared to the new 160.

COMFORT:

This is another thing people at TVS had to look at. While the older version boasts of racing ergonomics and posture, many people complained of developing back pain and wrist pain due to the short handle it used to sport. Though the older 180 looked the same as the 160, the moment you mounted it, you could feel the difference almost immediately. The older 180 was a joy to ride and always longed to be pushed harder and faster. The older version stayed planted even at high speeds when compared to the 160, which started to swerve even as we reached the 90s. The good thing about the new 160 is that it will not swerve as much as the older one because it now comes equipped with wider tubeless tyres. Also going by the normal stance, though the new models look longer, the wheelbase remains the same for both the 160 and 180 at 1300 mm and 1326 mm respectively.

The seat is nice and comfortable just as much the old one was. The suspension quality remains the same, somewhat stiff, going by its racing pedigree. The handlebar is well positioned and might result in less wrist pain and back pain when compared to prior. The people at TVS have tried their best to reduce the vibrations and have succeeded to a great extent if not completely. The vibrations do exist at low RPMs for the 180, but are very negligible. Earlier, the 160, due t its ergonomics, was limited to city conditions and was not advisable for longer journeys. TVS have tried to change that and I guess they have succeeded. Nothing has changed with the 180 though. It was good enough then and is the same now irrespective of longer or shorter distances.

HANDLING:

The old 180 was pretty underrated, at least in terms of sales figures, for what it was capable of. It used to handle like a dream, its performance was top notch, and it always used to deliver more than what people expected out of it, no wonder it was always pitted against higher capacity vehicles in shootouts. Now, enter the new 180, thankfully since this is predominantly a cosmetic makeover, there is no significant change in the way it handles when compared to the older version. The power delivery is nice and smooth and boy, the throttle response is crisp. The large RTR labeling is not on the tank shrouds for the sake of it; the Racing Throttle Response is pretty evident every time you twist the throttle. The brute force of 17.03 PS of power coupled with the incredibly high power to weight ratio pulls off mind-boggling performance, especially if you’re graduating from commuter motorcycles.

60 Kph came up in no time and I had to purposely shift to higher gears with enough power in hand even as I was going past each gear. The top speed claimed and mentioned in the brochure is 124 kmph. Now here comes the most important point and I hope TVS people take note of this. They have kept almost all the feedback in mind while coming up with this new series, but have missed out on one important and crucial thing. It is the sixth gear. Many people across the board have mentioned the fact of missing a sixth gear on the 160 as well the 180. You go past the five gears in a flash and are left wanting for more with the amount of power still in store. I am sure a sixth gear would do wonders for at least the 180’s monstrous appetite and let us hope TVS includes the sixth gear in their upcoming launches. Almost everything you throw at the 180, it seems to devour with consummate ease – be it bumpy roads, corners at high speeds, instant pick-up, power delivery at higher RPMs, or even effective braking. The quality of rubber has been an issue in the past and continues in the present model. TVS tyres do perform their duty pretty well, but are not as good as that of MRF.

MILEAGE:

“Kitni deti hai” is a common statement that everyone has come to terms with since the beginning of time. No matter how powerful the bike or whichever segment it may find itself in, the average Indian biker always has this question popping up. Well, since nothing has changed internally, at least as claimed by TVS, the old figures should be applicable to the current models as well. The showroom people claim the 160 to deliver around 45-50 kmpl and the 180 to deliver 35-40 kmpl. However, I do have friends who claim to get around 45 kmpl with the 180 and around 55 kmpl with the 160. When it comes to mileage, a lot depends on how we ride. One needs to avoid riding the clutch and frequent braking. Also riding in the top gear between speeds of 45-55 will optimize the mileage on most motorcycles.

BRAKING:

The roto-petal discs on front and rear perform their duties well. Braking is sharp and precise and there is no sense of insecurity even when braking at higher speeds. Of course, ABS is a welcome addition and enhances the confidence level on wet surfaces. On the non-ABS versions, the moment you hit a water patch, the tyres tend to skid on moderate-to-harsh braking. ABS goes a long way in preventing that and hence is a must have if you can afford the extra few grand that the ABS version sells for. The rear discs are optional for the 160, but come standard with the 180.

CONCLUSION:

Ever since its debut, Apache has been a name synonymous with raw pulsating power that sets your pulse racing and gets the adrenaline going. Over the years, it has grown up in terms of power, performance and ergonomics.. The new series was eagerly anticipated by all die-hard Apache fans and the greatest disappointment was that TVS didn’t up the ante in terms of displacement even after the many rumors of an RTR 220 doing the rounds. I just want to leave you guys with some hope because I have confirmed from a dealer friend here in Hyderabad that an RTR 220 is still in the pipeline. When it will surface, nobody knows, but if it indeed does, it is great news for all bike enthusiasts. Let us hope TVS will not disappoint us and will come up with a worthy opponent to the Pulsar 200 NS in the days to come. That’s it from me guys. Ride safe, keep your eyes on the road, wear your helmets, keep the headlight on low beam while in city limits, and do not use your cell phones while riding.

Tvs Coming up with revised Apache Series

The TVS Motor company’s flagship models, the Apache RTR series bikes are a popular choice with Indian sportsbike enthusiasts, and for good reasons. Born with the solid foundation of racing heritage, the affordably priced RTR’s, 160 and 180 represent the best of both worlds, engineered to be relaxed enough to ride on a daily basis, yet still providing riders the thrills of exciting performance and sharp edged handling that only true sportsbikes deliver. The RTR 180 to its credit remains to date one of India’s select few motorcycles to provide riders the additional safety of ABS assisted brakes.
The Apache RTR’s are easily the best looking motorcycles from TVS, which is soon to be taken to the next level. Expect the shortly upcoming RTR variants to sport more contemporary, revised styling, while retaining all their sought after value-for-money features including a heady blend of performance, with good handling and adequate comfort. The new RTR should enter TVS showrooms around the country as early as within some weeks from now, and we don’t expect to see too much more than is already offered by these bikes in terms of extra engine capacity or performance.

TVS Motor expects sales to grow over 14% this fiscal

NEW DELHI: Chennai-based TVS Motor Co on Wednesday said it expects sales to grow by over 14 per cent this fiscal and is gearing up to launch two new models toward the end of the calendar year.
"The market is still showing growth, although it is not the same as last year. The industry is expected to grow around 13-14 per cent, while we (TVS) are looking at slightly higher growth than that," TVS Motor Co President (Marketing) H S Goindi told PTI.
For the 2010-11 fiscal, the company had posted a 33.17 per cent increase in sales to 20,46,668 units from 15,36,919 units in the previous fiscal. Its total two-wheeler sales rose by 31.86 per cent to 20,06,808 units from 15,21,939 units in the previous fiscal.
He said it is unlikely that the expectation of around 25 per cent growth in the two-wheeler market will happen this fiscal.
When asked about new product launches, he said the company is gearing up to introduce two new models by the end of the year.
"One will be a motorcycle and the other a scooter," Goindi said, but declined to share further details.
Earlier, the company had said it would re-enter the Indian electric scooter market with some existing and new models during this fiscal.
The company was carrying out test runs of about 50 electric scooters, comprising some of its existing and new models, across various towns in the country.
In April, 2008, TVS had launched electric scooterette 'Scooty Teenz Electric' with high hopes of selling around 40,000 units per year.
However, it had stopped the production since May, 2009, as it received a lukewarm response from the market.
The company had also shelved plans to launch electric three-wheelers.

TVS Motor Company registers 18% growth in May 11 sales

Hosur, June 1, 2011: Contributions from domestic and exports markets alike, backed by steady growth across all segments has enabled TVS Motor Company to increase its total sales by 18% in the month of May 2011. The company recorded total sales of 185,930 units in May 2011 against 156,980 units in the corresponding month of the previous year. The three wheeler business of the company continued to register significant growth. The company's cumulative sales for the months of April and May 2011 grew by 16% with sales of 353,674 units against 304,152 units recorded in the previous comparable period.
Two Wheeler
Total two wheeler sales grew by 18% with sales of 181,891 units in May 2011 in comparison with 154,667 units recorded in May 2010.
Scooter sales increased by 20% with sales of 38,168 units, compared to 31,884 units recorded in May 2010. Motorcycles grew by 11% totaling 75,619 units in May 2011 as against 67,906 units in May 2010.
Domestic two wheeler sales of the company reported a growth of 16% with sales of 158,829 units in May 2011 against 136,621 units reported in May 2010.
Exports
Exports grew by 42% recording total sales of 26,168 units in May 2011 as against 18,482 units in the same month of the previous year. The company exported 23,062 units of two wheelers in May 2011 in comparison with 18,046 units in May 2010, an increase of 28%.
Three Wheeler
In May 2011, the company sold 4,039 units of three wheelers as against 2,313 units in the comparable month of the previous year, a growth of 75%. Cumulative three wheeler sales for the months of April and May 2011 stood at 7600 units.

Coimbatore 22 May 2011: Picking up from where they left off after the first round of the MRF National Supercross Championship in Bangalore, Team TVS Racing, dominated at the Coimbatore racetrack, finishing with podium positions in every race participated. Leading from the front were their riders Aravind K P and Pradeep H K. Both riders pulled off stunning manoeuvres while displaying superior supercross riding skills. Egged on by an enthused crowd, Team TVS Racing's Aravind K P was adjudged the winner of the Class I Foreign Open - Group A 250 cc winning both motos by a comfortable lead, while bagging the"Best Rider of the Day" award.
A thrilling first race, Moto One of Class 1, Foreign Open, Group A 250cc - 500 cc, saw Team TVS Racing rider Aravind K P take the lead from the first corner itself. Aravind exhibited unsurpassed riding talent to consistently widen the gap between himself and his rivals and win the first race. A keen contest between privateer Veer Patel, privateer C D Jinan and Team TVS Racing's Pradeep H K ensued for the next few laps until Pradeep H K in a blinder of a move edged past rival Veer Patel to take second position. Veer Patel came in third.

However, it was the Second Moto of the Class 1, Foreign Open, Group A 250cc - 500 cc that was the most eventful and stimulating race of the day. Race leader Aravind K P of Team TVS Racing once again took the lead from the first corner itself, with H K Pradeep and Veer Patel close at his heels. Veer Patel managed to get the better of H K Pradeep after his motorcycle collided with the rear wheel of H K Pradeep's bike causing both riders to fall and giving room for privateer C D Jinan from Kerala to move up to second position. In the next lap itself, an adept move from Veer Patel ensured him the second position. The fifth lap did not prove good for C D Jinan either with TVS Racing's H K Pradeep overtaking him to take third place.

It was an all Team TVS Racing affair in Class 3, Indian Experts, Group C upto 260 cc as well, with H K Pradeep taking the winning position with 37 points, followed by Aravind K P with 35 points and Pramod Joshua with 32 points. Despite a slow start in the first moto, Aravind K P and Pradeep H K fought a keen contest, with fellow team mate Pramod Joshua and Naresh to secure the first and second place. The second moto had different story to tell though, with H K Pradeep and Pramod Joshua taking the lead. It was sheer grit and experience that saw Aravind K P to the podium in the last lap of the race.
In the Class 5, Indian Experts, Group C upto 260cc, team TVS Racing won four of the top five places. The only perceivable competition came from that of privateer C D Jinan who secured the second position. Pramod Joshua of Team TVS Racing won the race with Mohammed Azghar taking third place. Privateer Girshin from Thrissur, Team Kerala's exhibited impressive riding talent in Class 2, Novice, Group C as well as the Class 6 Private Experts, Group C, winning both races handsomely.
Riders from Coimbatore impressed the crowed and officials alike in a closely run race in Class 4, Locals, Group B with 16 of them jostling for space around corners to overtake one another. Prakash R took top honours winning the race, on his Apacher RTR 160 followed by Anand A and Ramesh Kumar P.
Team TVS Racing's Aravind K P now leads the championship with 77 points followed by team mate H K Pradeep with 69 points and privateer Veer Patel with 62 points. The next leg of the championship is scheduled to take place in Chennai in September this year.

TVS Racing has always been known for their revolutionary steps towards biking. Being the first Indian bike manufacturer focused towards racing, they have always tried to delight their customers with bikes representing their racing DNA. In a country like India where you live in the world of uncertainties of who might come from where, it is very important to have a bike that gives you confidence that “Yes! You can stop”. It has been observed that TVS has lately been focusing on removing the pain areas for the daily riders, first they launched Jive which tried to relieve the customers of the painful exercise of fighting with the clutch lever in the traffic. And now, they have come up with a machine that adds to your confidence of being safe in the panic situations too.

TVS recently launched the ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) version of the Apache RTR 180. Visually, this new avatar looks similar to its non-ABS version, with just some decal modifications along with the masterpiece of ABS into it. I was fortunate to get my hands on this new innovation by TVS, all thanks to xBhp. This is the first bike in the world in this segment which comes fitted with ABS, kudos to TVS for this much appreciated initiative. RTR has always been criticized for its vibes and non feasibility for long touring. However, I have always found it very comfortable riding this machine for any kind of rides. This time when I got this machine, I decided to go for a long ride which would give me the opportunity to ride on almost all kind of terrains. So chose a place called Palampur in Himachal as my destination.

Just for those who don’t know about ABS, Anti-lock Braking System technology is an integration of a HECU (Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit) and Independent Wheel Speed Sensors which helps determine when a wheel is likely to get locked. When the brakes are applied hard, the wheel tends to lock. At this point, the HECU takes over instantaneously and modulates the brake pressure continuously to keep the Apache RTR 180 ABS in the most effective braking zone. The Apache RTR ABS is also equipped with Rear Wheel Lift-off Protection (RLP) system which regulates deceleration when the bike is likely to lift off during emergency braking situations and takes over control, with no loss of stopping distance.

Till the very last moment, I was confused in deciding my destination. First, I thought I must continue with my saga of “Auli on Holi.” However, I was bit concerned of 2 things, first high possibilities of landslide as one of my friend came from Uttaranchal just 2 days back where he got stuck in landslide, second was the Holi as in Uttaranchal Holi is celebrated for 6 days and people have this tendency of stopping you forcefully and play Holi with you. Then, I had a word with my friend in Himachal who owns a tea estate in Palampur and he told me that in Himachal Holi is celebrated a day earlier than planes, and that’s the time I decided that I am heading to Palampur.

I started early in the morning at 5 a.m. and chose to take the route of

Delhi – Chandigarh – Ropar – Una – Chintpurni – Kangra – Palampur

It has always been a pleasure riding during the morning hours on the Chandigarh Highway. I first thought that I would stop at Chandigarh for my breakfast and then continue; however, it was so much fun riding this machine that I actually forgot to take the break at Chandigarh and realized only when I stopped for re-fuelling the bike. It was such a pleasure riding it that I kept riding and found myself in the hills after crossing Una and heading to Chintpurni. With its 17.3 BHP @ 8500 RPM and 15.5NM @6500 RPM torque from the 177.4 cc mill, it was a treat to ride that machine. With the given power, it can easily cruise at 100-110 kmph.

The bike performs really well in the hills as you rarely feel any power loss with the raise in altitude and when you have a machine that itself helps you ride, the pleasure increases even more. Throughout the ride till Palampur, covering the distance of 650 kms, the bike consumed the fuel of Rs. 1600; it could be that it was only with this particular bike that it gave such mileage because company claims to give easy 40-45 kmpl on the highway. On this route, the bike showed tremendous agility and proof of being a real track tool. However, the only issue that I faced was some quality issue with the rear brake paddle, as it used to get loose at some points, leading to the improper functioning of the braking system. Again it could be just the bike that I was using or is it the actual quality issue, I leave it on the company to check, inspect and act upon. But one thing that has really amazed me is the braking ability on different terrains; the ABS really works amazingly well and leaves you with increased confidence to ride. If we leave this one issue of quality aside, the bike has got rock solid suspension and body built.

Yes, I agree that for a while the vibes did trouble me as well as I rode this machine after a good break, but soon I got used to it and really enjoyed my ride. And yes, I must admit that this is one of the loudest machines in its class and I believe many would enjoy it as they don’t have to go for any aftermarket exhaust on it.

I enjoyed my Holi staying inside the house of my friend and left in the afternoon to explore some unexplored areas of Palampur where we did some photography and tested its ABS switch ability. You switch on the ABS and you feel the difference, but make sure that when you ride you are aware of which mode you riding the bike because if you have been riding the bike with ABS ‘on’ and later unknowingly you start riding the bike with ABS ‘off’ (if someone switched it off or you forgot after doing so) then you might end up hurting yourself with unintentional stoppies or flipover.

Next day to Holi, when it was actual Holi for any other state in India, I decided to move back towards Delhi with the strategy in mind that by the time I hit plains, the Holi fever will be over and everybody will be back to their homes. So, I decided to take the other route this time.

Palampur – Mandi – Shimla – Zirakpur – Karnal – Delhi

This time, I had a lot of hills to cover, so I decided to move in the dark itself, not realizing that doing so will take me to plains early in the morning, putting myself in the same Hooligan atmosphere of Holi. I started at 5 in the morning and reached Mandi at 6:00. When I left from Palampur, I thought I will stop in Mandi and will do my breakfast, but it was too early in the morning so I kept moving. Soon I realized that something is wrong, none of the hotels or dhabas were open by 9 a.m. I thought I’ll go to Shimla and will do some breakfast there, but to my disappointment nothing was available even there. As it was too early in the morning, I thought lets go to Narkanda and if possible, come back the same day or stay there. Half way, I realized that none of the hotels were open till then and it was already 10:30. I feared what if reaching Narkanda I don’t find any of the hotels/guest houses open there. So for the first time, I decided to back off and go back to Shimla in search of some hotel as Shimla is a big town. I searched the entire Shimla and found nothing. I was left with no choice but to head towards CCD of Dharampur. Alas! Even it was closed and the same thing happened at Parwanoo too. Till then, I was hungry like wolf and wanted to eat something. But before I could have died of starving, I found a Punjabi Dhaba opened after some kilometers from Parwanoo, I went their asking what is available and he gave me the menu card. I was happy and thought God has sent him for me. I started ordering and to my shock, I heard “Not Available” for everything. Finally, I asked if I can get a Maggie and tea. I felt relieved to here “Yes” for it. Finally I had a Maggie and a tea and moved again. After having something to revive my energy, I asked what is the problem and why all of the Himachal is looking as if there is a curfew, I was told that it being the next day of Holi, everybody was on holiday.

It was already 12:00 by now and I was sure that plains would also be over with the Holi hangover and moved on. And yes, I was right! Up till Delhi or I must say till my door step, I felt that I am the king and I am riding on my private road, having no one to interrupt. There was no unnecessary stress of looking around. OK! The last one was just joke, you must look around every time, at least in India you never know who will come from where and when. I reached home safely at around 4:00pm.

Overall, the bike had been a dream to ride in the hills and in plains as well, yes those who have already ridden high revving bikes might not enjoy this as this has got short gearing ratio and would reach its peak very soon and ask for the gear shift.

I know that sharing any ride experience is very difficult to express in words. But, I hope you all enjoyed the ride and the bike with me.

Bangalore 15 May 2011: Team TVS Racing put up a spirited fight at the first leg of the MRF National Supercross Championship despite suffering a setback even before the first round of the competition. The initial leg, held at Bangalore today, did not see participation of Team TVS Racing's flamboyant lead rider C S Santosh who had crashed on his Apache RTR 250 fx motorcycle during the practice rounds. A sombre TVS Team however took up the challenge and finished the day in style by taking podium positions in every race in which they participated. H K Pradeep who was adjudged the best rider of the day after winning the Class I Foreign Open - Group A 250 cc - 500 cc race.
It was excitement from the word go. The first race of the day, Foreign Open Group A 250cc - 500 cc saw privateer C D Jinan from Kerala taking the lead initially in the first lap. But his glory was short lived as he fell while negotiating a sharp curve towards the middle of the first lap giving competitor privateer Veer Patel from Vadodara the chance to snatch the lead, followed closely by HK Pradeep in second place and Aravind K P in third place, both from Team TVS Racing. But as fate would have it, Veer Patel's motorcycle stalled in lap 5 giving H K Pradeep and Aravind K P the opening to move into first and second place. Aravind K P then engaged in a closely fought endeavour to take the lead and win the race. Veer Patel came in third.

In second moto however, Aravind overcame a slow start to finish ahead of privateer Veer Patel, but was not able to get the better of team mate H K Pradeep who finished first. Both Veer Patel and Aravind K P overtook C D Jinan in the first turn itself and continued until the end of the race finishing in second and third positions respectively. In all 11 riders participated in each of the motos.

Team TVS Racing excelled in the Class III Indian Experts Group C up to 260 cc race as well, winning not only one, two and three but also four five and six. The only perceivable competition came from that of privateer CD Jinan, who was placed third at the end of the second lap. But in his enthusiasm to push his machine to the limits, he fell in lap 3 giving TVS riders just the room they were looking for. Both motors of Class III Indian Experst Group B upto 260 cc was again dominated by Team TVS Racing riders with teammates Aravind KP and Pradeep HK finishing first and second and fellow team mate Pramod Joshua finishing a distant third. The Class II Novice Group C upto 260cc was won by privateer Anil Kumar from Bangalore, while Basheer Ahmed of Team TVS Racing and Privateer Syed Dastagiri of Shimoga stood second and third respectively.
The locals impressed in a closely run race with almost nine to ten riders jostling for space around corners to overtake one another. Madhu S took top honours winning the race, followed by Shabaz Khan.
The next leg of the championship will take place in Comibatore next Sunday, 22nd May 2011

Hosur, May 1, 2011 : TVS Motor Company witnessed an overall growth of 14% in total sales for April 2011. The company registered sales of 167,744 units as against 147,172 units in the corresponding month of the previous year. The growth was led by the company's scooter sales and international business. Three wheeler business of the company also continued to grow substantially.
Two Wheeler
Total two wheeler sales of the company grew by 13% recording sales of 164,183 units in April 2011 against 144,689 units recorded in April 2010.
Domestic two wheeler sales of the company accounted for 141,619 units in April 2011 against 125,471 units reported in April 2010 growing by 13%.
Scooter sales led the growth increasing by 31% with sales of 35,074 units compared to 26,860 units recorded in April 2010. Motorcycles grew by 5%; totaling 69,573 units in April 2011 as against 66,000 units in April 2010.
Exports
Exports recorded cumulative sales of 25,275 units in April 2011 as against 19,657 units in the previous year. During the month, the company exported 22,564 units of two wheelers against 19,218 units in April 2010.
Three Wheeler
In April 2011, the company sold 3,561 units of three wheelers as against 2,483 units in the comparable month of the previous year, a growth of 43%.

Hosur, April 1, 2011: Consistent contributions from all segments of the two and three wheeler industries during the current fiscal has enabled TVS Motor Company to achieve its stated guidance of two million in sales. The company registered an overall growth of 28% in the month of March 2011 with sales of 191,208 units as against 149,194 units in the same month of the previous year.
The company's cumulative sales grew 33% with sales of 2,046,668 units for the period April 2010 to March 2011 against 1,536,919 units registered in the previous comparable period.
Two Wheeler
Total two wheeler sales of the company grew by 27% recording sales of 186,781 units in March 2011 against 146,763 units registered in March 2010.
Cumulative two wheeler sales for the period April 2010 to March 2011 grew by 32% with sales of 2,006,808 units over 1,521,939 units in April to March 2010.
Domestic sales of the company increased by 28% registering sales of 162,719 units in March 2011 against 126,696 units reported in March 2010.
Scooter sales continued to impress, growing by 50% with sales of 42,655 units compared to 28,504 units recorded in March 2010. Motorcycles grew 24% accounting for sales of 79,642 units in March 2011 as against 64,147 units in March 2010.

Exports increased 31% over the same month of the previous year accounting for 26,979 units as against 20,585 units in the previous year. During the month, the company exported 24,062 units of two wheelers against 20,067 units in March 2010.

Anti-lock Braking System makes its production debut on an Indian motorcycle.We've been waiting for the TVS Apache RTR 180 with ABS for a while now and it's finally here! TVS has gone and launched their flagship bike with Anti-lock Braking System. The bike will come priced at Rs 78,880, ex-showroom, New Delhi. The company has declared that this is only the introductory price of the motorcycle, so prices are subject to change, soon. The RTR 180 ABS comes at a premium of approximately Rs 9,000 over the regular 180.
The bike is available only in white colour and comes with differentiating orange decals.
TVS has also declared that if the bike is successful, they will come out with an ABS variant of the Apache RTR 160 as well. The company's plans for a 200cc + motorcycle also continue, but they haven't announced a timeline for it yet.

The company sold 177,412 units in February 2011 against 142,676 units in the same month of the previous year. The company's cumulative sales for the period April 2010 to February 2011 stood at 1,855,460 units.

The company sold 165,152 units in January 2011 against 127,288 units in the same month of the previous year. Chennai, January 20, 2011: Sustained growth across all product segments has enabled TVS Motor Company to achieve strong revenue growth of 51% in the third quarter with sales revenue growing from Rs. 1089 crore in the quarter ended December 2009 to Rs. 1647 crore in the quarter ended December 2010.
Profit before tax, during the quarter under review, grew by 177% from Rs. 25.41 crore recorded in December 2009 to Rs. 70.29 crore in the current quarter. Profit after tax grew by 137% from Rs. 23.54 crore in the previous comparable quarter to Rs. 55.75 crore in the quarter under review.
Cumulative profit after tax for nine months ended December 2010 grew at 128% from Rs.66.20 crore to Rs.150.90 crore. The directors have declared an interim dividend of Re. 0.50 per share on the enhanced capital of Rs.47.51 crore as compared to Re. 0.70 per share on the then capital of Rs. 23.75 crore.
Total two-wheeler sales of the company grew at 39% in the third quarter, increasing from 3.72 lakh units in the third quarter of the previous year to 5.18 lakh units in the current quarter.
Motorcycle sales grew at 40% from 1.51 lakh units in the quarter ended December 2009 to 2.11 lakh units in the reporting quarter. Scooters continued its upward growth, increasing by 64% from 0.76 lakh units in the quarter ended December 2009 to 1.24 lakh units in the current quarter.
Two wheeler exports registered 17% growth with sales increasing from 43,696 units in the quarter ended December 2009 to 51,394 units in the current quarter.
The company's three wheeler sales during the quarter grew 212% from 3,225 units in the quarter ended December 2009 to 10,079 units in the quarter ended December 2010.
At the end of the quarter under review, PT TVS Motor Company Indonesia sold 14,809 units (April '10 to December '10) in comparison with 10,448 units (April '09 to December '09) registering a growth of 42% over the same period of the previous year. Expansion of dealerships has been a key focus area and the company has added two new provinces to the existing thirteen. Upgraded models of TVS RockZ and TVS Apache will be launched in the fourth quarter. With improved sales network and product portfolio, PT. TVS is expected to vastly improve its performance in 2011-12.

TVS APACHE RTR180 SPECIFICATIONS OUT!

The good folks at biking world are carrying some stuff about the TVS Apache RTR180 ABS. The stuff we’re talking about are the specifications of the ABS system that will make it onto the RTR180. What we find difficult to fathom is the modest increase in price of the ABS version when compared to the non ABS version of the Apache RTR180, which at INR 3000 seems a little too inexpensive to be taken seriously.

In comparision, the C-ABS system that the 2011 Honda CBR250R will come with is a full INR 30,000 costlier than the non ABS version. So, the pricing bit still remains a grey area although it would a be a terrific feat of sorts if TVS Motors does indeed manage to price the ABS version of the Apache RTR180 at just INR 3,000 over the non ABS variant. Meanwhile, here are a few specs of the Apache RTR180 ABS and a video of the Apache RTR180 ABS in action.

Hosur, January 1, 2011: A substantial increase in domestic sales spurred by significant demand from across all product segments has propelled TVS Motor Company�s December sales by 41%.
The company sold 175,500 units in December 2010 against 120,913 units in the same month of the previous year. Cumulative sales of the company for the period April 2010 to December 2010 thus stood at 1,516,606 units.
Two Wheeler
Total two wheeler sales witnessed a sizeable increase of 41% with sales of 168,359 units against 119,701 units registered in December 2009.
Consequently, cumulative two wheeler sales for the period April 2010 to December 2010 increased by 34% with sales of 1,485,102 units over 1,109,054 units in April to December 2009.
Domestic sales of the company increased by 46% with sales of 149,357 units in December 2010 against 102,479 units reported in December 2009.

C S Santosh Blazes Away to Seal Supercross Championship

Team TVS Racing finishes 1st and 2nd overall in MRF National Supercross Championship

In a fitting finish to the MRF Supercross National Championship, team TVS Racing, which is celebrating its 25th year of racing asserted its supremacy on the race track sweeping the first and second championship positions.
The final race of the championship which was held in Pune saw Team TVS Racing's star rider C S Santosh, not only finish the race with finesse but also steal the thunder by being crowned best rider of the day.
Santosh finished the championship round with a total of 219 points, a difference of 45 points from his nearest rival and team mate, Aravind K P who ended the race with 169 points. The hierarchy of winners of the MRF Supercross Championship therefore stands as C S Santosh as the overall champion, followed by Aravind K P in second place and C D Jinan, in third place with 168 championship points.

Though it was a matter of winning ten points in the Pune leg to sweep the championship, it was no easy task for C S Santosh, as both track and competition were equally fierce. Fellow team mate Aravind K P rode hard to hold on to the lead until the third lap in the first moto when he lost his balance allowing C S Santosh to capitalize and whiz past him to take final honours. Santosh finished off in signature style winning both motos to bag the championship.

This is a special win for us as it coincides with our celebration of 25th year of racing. I give full credit to all our riders for their stunning performances this year. Scooters grow 44 %, Motorcycles up 40%; Domestic Sales up 31%

Hosur, December 1, 2010: Robust demand from all segments of its product portfolio has enabled TVS Motor Company to maintain a healthy growth momentum in the month of November 2010. Total sales of the company grew by 29%. The company sold 157,041 units in November 2010 against 121,945 units in the same month of the previous year. Cumulative sales for the period April to November 2010 therefore stood at 1,341,106 units.
Two Wheeler
During the month, total two wheeler sales of the company grew by 27% with sales of 153,882 units against 120,844 units registered in November 2009.
Cumulative two wheeler sales for the period April to November 2010 increased by 33% with sales of 1,316,743 units over 989,353 units in April to November 2009.
Domestic sales of the company grew by 31% with sales of 139,541 units in November 2010 against 106,836 units reported in November 2009.
Scooter sales increased by 44% with sales of 36,233 units in the current month in comparison with 25,115 units registered in November 2009. Motorcycles sales continued to grow steadily at 40% with sales of 62,995 units in November 2010 in comparison with 45,080 units recorded in November 2009.
Export sales of the company stood at 14,341 units in November 2010 against 14,008 units registered in November 2009.
Three Wheeler
The company sold 3,159 units of three wheelers in November 2010 against 1,101 units in the comparable month of the previous year. Cumulative three wheeler sales for the period April '10 to November '10 grew 225% with sales of 24,363 units against 7,495 units in the same period of the previous year.

Ten10 Racing's Sarath Kumar will be the first Indian to hit MotoGP

Indian racing outfit from Bangalore, Ten10 Racing, has already announced its entry into the 125cc MotoGP class alongside its technical partner
WTR Team. The new team will be called WTR-Ten10 Racing and it will field one Italian and one Indian rider. The most viable Indian candidate to take the seat in the team for the MotoGP 125cc class is Ten10 Racing's Sarath Kumar, who also won this year's Indian National Road Racing Championship crown for Ten10 Racing. Ten10 ace rider, Sarath Kumar riding in Group B 165cc-four stroke expert class has broken the lap-record by over a second at the MMST circuit in Chennai.
The young 19-year old rider from Chennai has proved his mettle in his very first year with the team and has got himself the top honours in the premier class of Indian two-wheeler road racing. Young and feisty, the lad has age and experience on his side, which is extremely critical in the field of motorcycle road racing. Packed with talent and deep understanding of the bike, Sarath has done a fantastic job of developing Ten10 Racing's race machine along side the team's tech-head, Joel Joseph. There is a good chance that Sarath Kumar will be the first Indian to represent the country in MotoGP in the 125cc class. TVS Motor plans low-cost bikes

TVS Motor is scripting a new twist in the race to capture the12-million plus two-wheeler market. The company plans to introduce low-cost models across product segments. This would result in creation of a new segment within an existing segment.

“The work is on (for low-cost models) but I can’t share more details,” the company’s chairman Venu Srinivasan told FE.

Over the last one year, leading motorcycle makers have been developing cost-effective products, primarily, in the low-cost segment to rake in high numbers. The FE had reported in October that Mahindra & Mahindra has started preliminary work on developing a low-cost motorcycle which is going to be sub-100cc. Hero Honda Motors and Bajaj Auto are also weighing options to introduce a low-cost & high mileage bike.

TVS Motor is looking at international designs and new technologies for its product portfolio.
