It has been a while since I logged in to my Disqus account, and now I realize how much I miss commenting with this platform. Facebook sucks and admins just end up enabling it on their blogs with the view that it will cut down on all the spam comments. Maybe they are right, but as you point out Sharon, it also drastically reduces people's participation in the conversation for reasons that you and many other commenters on this post have pointed out. Let's hope Disqus keeps going from strength to strength!

@adoni No, it's a terrible commenting system.

1) People who have Facebook Blocked by their companies cannot comment when they are at work and can't see the comments

2) Countries where Facebook is banned can't comment

3) People who don't use Facebook can't comment.

This is why Disqus is much better. It allows EVERYONE to read and post comments.

What are you talking about? you can actually CHOOSE whether to "post comment on Facebook" or not. There is a checkbox for that! Didn't you know that?

Facebook is pretty bad.

People don't want the comments they post to appear on their timeline plus Facebook is blocked by a lot of companies so people will not be able to see or add comments.

Up until last week I had my spanish-language blogging on Disqus (http://gizn.com). I love the functionality and how easily it integrates. However, I decided that to help build my audience the facebook comments functionality would better serve the purpose. Although the site received few comments before, it now seems to have dropped to zero.

I still need to figure it all out, but for now I'm left wondering... Should the comments system focus mostly on conversion and retention, or is there a valid reason to change it up for acquisition/referral purposes?

Another thought... my website targets non-techie small business owners, that feel comfortable using facebook otherwise, and are unlikely to comment much on other sites. Any thoughts?
