Shake to Minimize in Windows 7

When you’re working on a cluttered desktop, grab the titlebar of a window and give it a vigorous shake and every other window will minimize providing you all the focus you need on that window.
Win+Home does the same thing.

Shift Click to open a new Instance of an application in Windows 7.

If your application is already open and you want to open a new instance it can be done by using shift + click

and Ctrl+Shift+Click will open an instance with admin priveleges.

Isn't that cool.

Windows Installer Cleanup

Do you have something that is not getting uninstalled completely. i.e. the uninstaller fails and you are not able to remove it. If this happens with an application that was installed using an msi installer there is a utility called Windows Installer Cleanup that can fix things for you.

Windows Installer Cleanup was made obsolete when it interfered with some files that were meant to be left for Microsoft Office. But this is worth giving a try for something that doesn't uninstall completely.

Start VirtualBox

Create a new VM by clicking the New button on the toolbar

Assign the required memory

Select to create a new virtual HDD.

Select the disk type, by default it is VDI

Dynamic Storage is flexible and expands only when required. Fixed storage is fast in performance but the space will be occupied upfront.

Click the create button to create the VM with the selected options.

A new VM will appear in the list. click Start to start the new vm and load OS.

Configuring home based web server to domain name

One of the problems that i had with my home based web server was that i had a dynamic IP Address which kept on changing every time the DSL modem was restarted. So in this situation how can you link a domain name to your ever changing IP Address. Well this is what i did with help of a service called Dynamic DNS http://www.dyndns.com/

- Create an account with Dynamic DNS which offers free domain name and other useful services.
- Download and install DynDNS updater which is a tool offered by Dynamic DNS to update the ip address whenever it changes.
- Configure the DynDNS tool to point to my domain name.
