Dissenting Opinion [Edition Number 3]

Editor's note: One of our favorite fans, @DissentOpinion contributes to the show by writing "Dissenting Opinion" each week after our show airs live.

Well, in typical partner fashion, Mike boasts about his iPad and S. Patrick cries just a little.

But seriously, Mike did brag about his iPad and that he is actually using Google Wave… shocker and party time, excellent! S. Patrick is also well known as one of the first to actually buy an iPad and is now one of the last to receive it, even Mike got his free copy before S. Patrick. Wow, maybe S. Patrick should have greased some palms to get his early!
Then Mike gave great insight to the 140 Conference in NYC and it went something like this:

“Blah blah blah scavenger hunt, blah blah blah foursquare, blah blah blah iPad”

I think the 140 Conference is a great idea and I attended via Ustream and saved a boatload of money in the process but didn’t get to meet people, which is the real value of a 140 Conference.

Also an interesting fact came out that Mike would not spend the money on an iPad right now, interesting feedback (considering he has one in his hands… if I had one in my hands I would also say I wouldn’t spend the money). Mike elaborated that it is a “nice to have but not a MUST have”. S. Patrick is very upset about this feedback considering he spent 2 car payments on his yet-to-arrive iPad.

Then we got into the meat of the show and began talking about Facebook Privacy. S. Patrick had an interesting take on the new privacy feature. His first impression was - whoa, that is cool to see what people are favoring. His second impression was - wow, others can see what I am doing and it made me scared.
This is the lesson of social networking, if you don’t want others to see it don’t post it, favorite it, like it or anything else for that matter.

They did provide good advice on how to block the personalization status, but you can never fully block the personalization of Facebook and there in lies the problem and Mark Zuckerberg’s genius of world domination. S. Patrick is harboring some deep rooted negative feelings about the personalization feature. I wonder if he has any deep seeded issues from his youth that make him feel this way?

LVwithLove also joined the call and (1) was sober and (2) brought the heat to S. Patrick and dashed his hopes about using the iPad for the first 24 hours. You can always count on LVwithLove to bring reality into focus.

Then the guys were joined by Tom Drago, the Easton Area School District Technology Guru. Welcome to the show Tom and nice way to go right after Mike and his iPad feedback, awesomesauce! Nothing like buttering up to the hosts! I found it interesting that Easton purchased iPads for students but want to cut teachers jobs, oh wait, this isn’t that kind of blog. I think it is fantastic that the students are learning new technology. Also, Easton is a “Mac” school district, is this the growing case? I know smaller companies are going Mac but haven’t seen too many large companies go that route, much more expensive from a product perspective.

Great show this week but I’m thinking the show should change its name to “Tweeps Talk Apple” or “iPad Forever” or “We Love Steve Jobs”. This show has a ton of iPad love, I can’t wait for the HP Slate to come out and just rattle these guys!

Dissenting Opinion [Edition Number 2]

In case you didn't know, Dissenting Opinion started out as an email from one of our listeners who thought he would be so kind as to share his feedback with us.

After reading it and really "liking" the tone of it (cough cough), Mike and I asked if we could publish it, to which we got the response "do whatever you want." So we did.

Wikipedia defines Dissenting Opinion as:

A dissenting opinion (or dissent) is an opinion in a legal case written by one or more judges expressing disagreement with the majority opinion of the court which gives rise to its judgment.

On that note, we bring you this week's edition:

Yes, I had too much prune juice and over slept for the show and couldn’t get out of my rocker this weekend to share my thoughts. But I just drank my Tang and feel energized to give you a review of this week's Tweeps Talking Tech!

iPad talk

Patrick jumped to the head of the line and purchased an iPad and loves the free advertising that Apple takes the free advertising route (smart social media strategy). Patrick also tried to make the video sell more by highlighting the video functionality and integration by companies (or lack there of) into the iPad. Funny enough, Yahoo released a great article on the

iPad shortcomings

so Patrick… take that!

iPhone to Verizon

The boys are not sold on the iPhone for Verizon. This will be a scaled down version and possibly limited talk/search functionality.

And the Apple talk stopped abruptly because Jeff Pulver joined the show…

Jeff Pulver

Well, Jeff opened his talk by discussing the over-referenced use of social media by President Obama in his campaign. He also made a Susan Boyle and James Cameron “Avatar” reference. Wow – he really opts to discuss the most obscure social media case studies. Maybe he was holding off on an Iraq election reference and saving that for a later date. Ugh, but I digress.

Jeff is a thought leader in social media and recognizes the importance of how this impacts people and businesses. And then Patrick got a word in edgewise to talk about Captain Sully. Being in a meeting with Jeff has got to be difficult, I mean, try to get in a word edgewise on this guy and he will drown you right back out. Nevertheless, Jeff is a smart dude and gave a lot of great insight on social networking, trends, drinking/drugs and the use of Foursquare.

Really, Foursquare was brought up again?! OK, using Foursquare is a great tool… just don’t push everything to Twitter! Jeff made an elusion to this as he said he was off of Foursquare at SXSW but able to connect with others on Foursquare. Yes, use Foursquare on Foursquare and not on Twitter… brilliant!

Laini Abraham

Laini joined the call after Jeff, maybe she was well rested after listening to Jeff’s diatribe.

Laini is an Easton lifer and wanted to give back to the community with her

books

. She is slowly integrating social media into her work and is learning how well it is to connect with old friends and how to leverage businesses are able to seize this opportunity.

Also, in case you missed it, S. Patrick said “in Easton which is where we hail from”. Yes, S. Patrick used the word “hail” in a serious sentence.

In May 2009, Michael had the fortunate pleasure of meeting Jeff at a Tweetup in New York City, sponsored by VH1's Best Week Ever show. In speaking to Jeff and telling him about the Lehigh Valley Tweetups, @LVTweetup, he asked me "So, are you a character?" I was a bit taken back, not sure what he meant, but he went on to explain. Jeff was starting the #140conf in a few weeks in New York City and was looking for "Characters" to speak, interact, co-mingle among other Twitter users and such and talk about "The Power of Now". I unfortunately had a conflict on the schedule, but am excited to be attending this year's upcoming #140conf later this month on April 20-21.

With a diverse background in photography and design, Abraham was the artistic designer of the Elucidator (for the first 18 issues) which is a free, quarterly arts and lifestyle magazine out of Easton. She is a prolific Easton photographer and her postcards, made from her photos, are sold in numerous stores throughout the town.

When is it not enough? When is it just plain spam?

Michael and I have had a few conversations around getting the message out for our new radio show, Tweeps Talk Tech. We brainstormed ways with connect potential listeners through:

Where, when, how?

An example of how overwhelming it is getting for publishers is below from a techcrunch.com story today:

Things on the Web used to be simple for bloggers and publishers. You published on a Website, and then syndicated it out to other channels via an RSS feed. But then realtime streams started taking over and RSS couldn’t keep up, even though technologies like PuSH are speeding it up. So publishers take their RSS feeds and publish the headlines and a link directly to Twitter with a service like Twitterfeed. But what about Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and all the other social streams coming down the pike?

Not only does it become overwhelming for us, but what about you, the victims... err I mean listeners?

The school of thought that these publishers are subscribing to (pun intended) is that they need to be where the "people" are. If the people are in 10 places, so will they be.

A personal story

When I first started tweeting, I followed an individual and also that person's company. After a few weeks, I noticed something: He always tweeted the same things at the same time from both accounts. Me, being the inbox zero kind of guy, unfollowed the company account. A few hours later, I was called out on it. Damn, he must have been using Quitter! He asked why I unfollowed and I told him the truth. I was later thanked for the feedback.

Too much noise?

I believe that it's easy to become "that guy" and post way too much noise and therefore, people will either unfollow you or skim your future messages. Both are bad. But what about the individual who is only on Facebook and fanned the Tweeps Talk Tech fan page? We HAVE to post there, too right?

Personal Branding

Part of society, business, & friendship is building a personal brand. You do it without knowing that you are doing it. Are you known as the funny guy/gal, the serious one, the one who knows politics, movies, sports? Are you fun, mean, aloof, or sensitive?

We believe that we are building a personal brand that is US. Part of that brand is Tweeps Talk Tech, LVTweetup, and Mike's business, Be The Bee. However, we believe that the core reason someone would follow us, retweet us, or be interested in what we have to say would be because of who we are, and how you perceive us.

Keep it simple, on point

We have decided that we won't have a Facebook Fan Page, Google Buzz Page, LinkedIn profile, or any other noise. We will limit our delivery of information to you and potential listeners through just a few places:

Welcome to the newest feature on Tweeps Talk Tech: Dissenting Opinion by @DissentOpinion

The show opens by Patrick and Michael wishing they were big rock stars followed by the guys ~~hard selling their experience~~ sharing their backgrounds. Personal note: the guys are using Google Wave, kudos.

And now, some of my thoughts on this weeks show:

Conan O’Brien followed 1 random person who has begun to reap the rewards and whose follower count shot to over 28k in under 1 week. So, what she decided to do was back out of the interview just 15 minutes before hand because she was afraid of a little competition from @LisaTickledPink who had the same benefit bestowed upon her by Kevin Rose and his gang of technology groupies. Lisa was extremely classy in her comments of Sarah. So Sarah… how about we grow up a bit and embrace the new world (and get a new attorney)! I did like Mike’s approach to creating an international philanthropic social media case to help with cancer research, something that Lisa maybe a great connection for given her sudden vast network. Also, Patrick was so smooth with his closing comment with Lisa with his easy transition of “before we end the interview…” So slick – maybe you should be a bit more blunt next time! Great appearance by @LisaTickledPink. (personal note – I’m not supporting Sarah so I excluded her Twitter profile)

2^nd Guest - @LocalHound - Tim Coleman – How to find local businesses and work together. Tim had good insight with building business communities and how to build trust in a very short sales/service customers. Plus, @LVwithLove called in and am not sure if this caller was in the best mindset to operate a phone. What was also mentioned was Mike’s ability through @LVtweetup to bring over 750 people together to meet, network and even form new friendships. Something that has started to benefit the local community and is sure to continue to grow over time.

Social Media statistics – companies are slow to adopt social media due to legal uncertainty. I disagree with Tim’s comment on using social media in a guerilla marketing tactic. By doing this, you are in a Web 1.0 world instead of providing engagement. The more you push, the harder it is to get genuine engagement. Do your work, do it daily and market yourself through your normal channels. Social media is a supplement to many companies and businesses, not a replacement strategy… yet.

Patrick pre-purchased an iPad, let’s be glad he is one of the first people to get frustrated with the new product and work all of the bugs. Way to step up and make the product better for those of us wanting to spend less money and receive a superior product in just a few months.

Mike wanted to share Global Fortune 100 social media statistics which were interesting but Patrick was sleepy…

Glmpse – yes, that is right, I (@kufarms) got my second shout-out for bringing this app to Patrick’s world. Think of “Hansel & Gretel” while you leave a trail of breadcrumbs so that someone may follow your location in real-time. And yes, the big brother approach was brought up… kudos to this line of thought. I was also mentioned as maybe the #1 Lehigh Valley anti-location based social networking fan… YES!

Rapportive – this is an add-on for FireFox and Google Chrome. It replaces the ads on Gmail with personal search functionality on social networks for that sent a particular email. Nice idea but I’m not sure I want to check in on everyone who sends me an email. This is on the verge of “snooping” which, I don’t know, feels kinda creepy at times. I’m not buying into this yet either.

SXSW and location based messages were introduced. Mike shared that this is a huge double edge sword, not enough time to really delve deep into it but hopefully this will be brought up in the future and might call in to provide some stirring discussion points.

Interesting show this week with brining in @LisaTickledPink and @LocalHound while receiving the Heisman from Sara. I also noticed that by having scheduled guests, the call-ins seemed to drop which was interesting, wondering if there was any connection between the two. Also no mention of @BlackForestDeli or a self promo for this weekends eat-off… you guys are loosing your touch. I think the enthusiastic intro may have sent you spinning.

Overall grade: B- this week (good effort but all of the promo leading up to this saying it would be the best show ever left me wanting a bit more)
