I’ve owned this game for ages, even carried the cool pack-in Duke Nukem subway token around on my key-chain until it broke, but I’ve never really played very much of it. It’s one of those games that just kind of got swept to the side, and ultimately forgotten in my collection. But, with my consoles packed in luggage for a move, and my new laptop being perfect for some last-gen gaming, I figured this would be a good time to bust it out again.

Manhattan Project plays not like Duke 3D, but like like 2D side-scrolling titles of Duke’s origins. Unfortunately, the gameplay struggles to meet even last gen standards. I can’t even say this is more fun to play than the original sprite based Duke Nukem adventures of old. Level after level plays the same as the one before it, and every single level involves tedious hunting of key-cards. Some interesting mechanics at least take a shot at originality, but still fall short. For example, killing enemies gets you Ego, which is also your health. Unfortunately, this just makes much of the game too easy. The vast majority will be played with the shotgun in hand as the only weapon you’ll need, with perhaps an assault rifle to quickly take down the bosses.

The game isn’t entirely without some platforming fun, but the overall package is just mediocre at best. The production values on this are just rock bottom. Duke’s one-liners are repeated every couple of kills, and never terribly funny to begin with. In one scene a chopper flies away and you can clearly see the seams where the sky texture meets the edges of the cube shaped environment. It’s almost laughable in it’s shoddiness, like watching an old B-Movie. I really can’t think of any reason to recommend that this title to be pulled from your local bargin-bin.

There’s a new Nintendo console, so of course there’s yet another update to the Mario Kart franchise. Like all the previous titles in the series, it’s a pretty solid all around… Bikes are great additions beside the karts, drifting has been greatly improved, and there’s several fun new courses. Unfortunately, it’s not everything it could have been. For one thing, the graphics have been given a mere moderate upgrade at best. The best improvement is simply the widescreen aspect ratio. Otherwise, nothing much has changed.

Compared to other series updates this year like Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii feels a little like a phoned in effort. The same problems as before still apply… blue shells are as cheap as ever, bullet bills can take you from last place to near first, and frustration with the CPU kicks in fairly quickly in Mirror Mode. There’s not many new power-ups — but the midair trick boosts and bike wheelies add a bit more depth to the experience.

Perhaps what many will consider the best addition is the online racing, something Nintendo has been way behind the curve on. It’s horribly lacking in options, but that’s Nintendo for you. The worst part is that the lack of options extends to the single player and local multiplayer. There’s almost no options or customization of the races to be had at all. Perhaps the biggest shame is that battle mode has been reduced to a team-brawl without elimination. Despite these problems, Mario Kart Wii is what it’s always been: a solid and fun racer / party game.

GTA IV may be one of the most hyped games since Halo 3 or Bioshock, and the critics are eating it up. It’s sitting at a whopping 98/100 on Metacritic, currently putting it at the top of the 360’s list and quite high on the all-time lists, at least for the moment. While overall scores almost always go down with time, both Mario Galaxy and The Orange Box recently broke into the overall top 10’s over at GameRankings.com, and GTA IV may just do the same. San Andreas really didn’t do it for me story or gameplay-wise, but GTA IV might be the best yet.

I’ve just picked up my first HDTV, and after having my 360 unplugged for the last month a half while moving, GTA IV was the obvious choice as the first game from my play list to break it in. Is it worth the hype? Depends. Like Halo 3, if you disliked or was indifferent to the series before — this one probably won’t change your mind. That said, there’s a lot here for people sitting on the fence and fans. The graphics looks kinda bland at first glance, but once you’re ripping down streets, cars are wrecking with wonderful detail, and people are flying through windshields — you’ll forget all about that. The driving mechanics are vastly improved, cars feel weighty and crash with satisfying crunch.

I’ve still got a long way left to go in the game, but so far I’m really enjoying it. The mini-games and cellphone text messages with friends and dates are pretty boring really, but the missions are the story has been keeping me playing. It almost seems less sandboxy than previous GTA games, there seems to be less incentive to go exploring, but that’s fine by me. Between the great story and all the improvements to an already solid gameplay system, it’s easy to see why GTA IV is getting rave reviews… but like Halo 3, though the game is solid, the hype is still a bit extreme.

The move to San Diego went great and I’m doing fine. SpaceKitty and I are having a blast together, seeing sights and playing games. We went over to Sea World yesterday and had some fun. It started off horribly actually, we stood in the Shipwreck Rapids line for over an hour and a half only to have the ride suspended for technical difficulties before we even got through the queue. Despite that though, the sights and shows were amazing. Sharks, dolphins, otters, and of course the whales. We took the skyride over Mission Bay at sunset, and even caught the fireworks show from the Shamu stadium before leaving.

I’m still trying to decide exactly how to retool the website now that I no longer game over a capture card. Odds are it’s going to end up more review focused again. I’d like to leave it a little more open ended with blogging as well rather than strictly reviews though. First impressions, tidbits about web games, anime impressions, etc etc. I’m sure I’ll settle into a new middle ground soon enough. On the plus side, I’m a proud owner of my first HDTV — a 26″ Vizio. It’s a thing of beauty.

Code Geass is finally starting to pick up steam again in the R2 season, and it’s reminding me why I loved this series last time around. Not that the first two episodes weren’t interesting, but Episode 3 gets back into the cat and mouse character driven chase with all the wild twists Code Geass loves to throw in.

I’m certainly interested in how the ‘brother’ character plays out, and I can help but be amused at the academy of spies headed up by Villetta. Looks like R2 is going to recover from the rather lackluster ending of R1 24 & 25. I’m still quite dissatisfied with the way Zero cut and ran, leaving the big climax of the series to simply fall apart. It’s like they decided they couldn’t end it, then made another season. Or perhaps were granted another season, then dragged out the ending. Regardless, R2 has been fun.

I like how the combat flows fast and feels fun using a combo of mouse and keyboard controls, and the unusual moves like shields and nearly screen length attack dashes. Picture a really hyper version of Mega-Man and you might be close. The graphics aren’t very high res, but they have plenty of old-school appeal. The full version is a whopping $20 (no way), but I had fun with the demo. I’ll have to give Noitu Love 1 a shot someday soon.

I’ve always written off Trackmania, but since switching over to a laptop I’ve been looking for some fun and low-spec games to populate it with. All my consoles are packed for a move, so I decided to grab the recently released TrackMania Nations Forever and give it a shot. Why not, since it’s free?

The first impressions were definitely good. I had expected some shoddy Linux-esque racing clone, but TrackMania actually looks pretty good and scales really well to my laptop’s specs. It certainly feels like a professional, fully realized title right from the first menus rather than some basement hobby project.

One of the things that threw me about TM is that, from the shots, it looks like a formula type racing game. Actually, it’s an arcade racer with crazy jumps, track suspended in midair, and a focus on speed. The best way I’ve heard it described is something like Hot Wheels, actually. In solo play, the goal is to beat set times and win medals, with increasingly difficult tracks. The cool thing is that you can race a ghost of the medal time, and also a ghost of your best time. The game even tracks your progress vs other players locally and around the world.

What I like most though is that hitting the backspace key will instantly restart the race with absolutely no delay at all. I’ve certainly had to hit it quite a few times since a single mistake in a time trial race means you’re not going to beat the goal time. If there were a delay, I’d probably lose patience with it far quicker. Haven’t tried the online play yet, but I plan on it soon. Really, for a free game, you can’t ask for much more. I’d even consider getting the full Trackmania United Forever game, but I think Nations alone has plenty to satisfy most players. It’s far better than I was expecting.

It seems like everything has fallen into place for the upcoming move to San Diego. Great job, good place to live, got everything packed… but, this might mean some changes to TwiddleGeek. Aside from just having less time to game, I’m no longer going to be gaming using a capture card through my PC. That simply means no more screencaps. Which isn’t to say the site is going to go under in a few weeks, there may just be a few changes.

I can see a few methods of still getting screens. First would be hooking the console up to a capture card temporarily and taking a few, as SpaceKitty did in her Mario Galaxy post. Frankly, that’s too much hassle. Secondly is simply grabbing some stock company-published screens for each game. There’s certainly no shortage. That could work, though it loses a bit of the personal touch and the fun of making a gallery of neat screens. The other option is to simply go with all text posts. This would perhaps enable more posts to be made, but I tend to think graphics add a lot of pop.

I’ll figure something out, I just haven’t decided quite yet. If anything there’ll still be plenty of reviews being published. I simply enjoy blogging about a game in a more freeform style while playing it and after finishing it than a review typically allows for. Also, most of my avatars and mobile themes come from screencaps… obviously that’ll become more difficult, but I’m sure I’ll find a way.
