First you need to decide what level of clean you want. 100% clean will cost you serious money (think camera, 4 hours and $400+++). If you just want the ducts thoroughly cleaned then $99 is the price. For $99 ALL your duct work gets thoroughly cleaned. If a camera was sent through the ducts, yes some residue may or may not remain. For most homeowners that’s good enough. For others, they may feel more comfortable having the camera crew out and spend lots of time and money on air duct cleaning. We find that most of our customers don’t want to spend so much time and money on a project like duct cleaning. They tell us all the time that they just want the “crud” out of the ducts. What (if anything) remains in the duct work certainly won’t be blowing around their house anymore. - Thanks for your interest and consideration, good luck on your decision.

DIY Duct Cleaning - How To

Your air ducts are dirty and they need to be cleaned. Chances are something has led up to the revelation that years of dust, dirt and debris can't be a good thing. Perhaps your nose has been running and you have come to the conclusion that you have something more than a head cold going on.

Quite often, homeowners experience breathing problems, excessive dust, a newborn or they just bought a new home. Whatever the case, it's definitely time for air duct cleaning, and youwant to do ityourself to save a few bucks. Nothing wrong with that. With a little creative ingenuity, some up-front capital and little time you should be able to make an added improvement to the quality of your indoor air.

Here is a Quick DIY Guide to Duct Cleaning

First, you will need a high powered air compressor. To blow the bulk of the crud out of your air ducts you will need to have the capacity to maintain 200psi for 30 minute intervals. You will need an attachment (we have ours specially made) for the end of the hose that will blow the dust backwards. Some people use copper tubing to create a "j-hook".

Next, you will need to have something heavy to cover the air vents. This should be something that keeps the pressurized air and the dust inside the duct work. This is important because otherwise the dust will blow around the house. Not a good plan.

The next step is to attach a high powered vacuum to the furnace. No, a shop vac won't work. Plan on spending a few hundred dollars to get one that can really create negative pressure. Buying a truck mounted vac like we use to clean air ducts wouldn't be practical...they cost thousands of dollars. A good place to look is Duct Cleaner Supply.

Lastly, since a RotoBrush is too expensive for most homeowners, you will want to fashion a rotating brush to the end of a drill. Buy a 25' cable which has a stationary outer shield, to attach to the end of a cordless drill. You will also need to put a long bristled brush on the end of the cable.

You Now Have the Basic Tools for DIY Air Duct Cleaning

In the next post, I will explain the process using the homemade duct cleaning equipment I just described. Keep in mind, the duct cleaning tools I have described are an inexpensive means of cleaning your own ductwork on a budget. The truck mounted duct cleaning equipment used by our company and most other duct cleaners runs into the thousands of dollars.

Air Duct Cleaning Costs Around the Minneapolis Metro Area

It is no secret that duct cleaning prices vary widely across the US and especially the Twin Cities. But who do you believe? Is it best to pay more and have your air ducts cleaned less frequently or is it better to spend less money and hire a duct cleaner on a regular basis? To answer this you might ask yourself; 'If I spend $450 - $1,000 to have a NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) certified duct cleaning company come out to thoroughly clean my air ducts, how long until I can afford to have them cleaned again?'.

It is important to understand that no matter what, your air ducts will get dirty again regardless of who cleans them and how clean they get.

Air Duct Cleaning - "Push-Pull" Method

Step 1 - Our technicians first attach a high powered vacuum to the main trunk line leading to your furnace.
Step 2. - Next, they go to each branch line and use a tool called an air-wand. The air-wand uses highly compressed air to push all the debris down to the main trunk-lines where the vacuum hose is creating negative-pressure to draw all debris to our van mounted equipment.
Step 3. - Once the technicians have completed the initial air sweep, they will go to the bottom of the furnace with a 25-ft rotary air-wand, also known as an air-snake, with a reverse nozzle. This creates a tornado effect in the ductwork removing all residue from the sides of the air ducts. This will pull any remaining dust and debris back to the vacuum. The vacuum is "pulling" while the air-wand is "pushing" and it does a very effective job on light dust, dirt and debris.

If it has been several years since your air ducts were cleaned, you might consider using the Rotary Brush Method (see below), and reserving the "Push-Pull" method for the next time, when your ductwork is not so dirty. Either way you choose, we clean all return lines and supply lines within your household.

Our technicians use the same first two steps mentioned above, but once they have completed the initial air sweep, an item called a Rotary-Brush with a reverse nozzle will be used. It will be inserted into the trunk line where the brush will rotate inside the air ducts. This rotating brush "scrubs" the walls clean, removing anything that is stuck on, or otherwise attached to the walls of the air ducts.

Once the ductwork has been scrubbed clean, they continue on to step 3 using compressed air to pull the dust and debris that was removed from the side walls of the trunk lines and any other debris which might have been knocked loose with the rotary brush, back out to the vacuum using the step 4 mentioned above.
