Christmas is big and special. My two believe if they are good boys and then Santa Claus will bring gifts to them. They have been writing to Santa every week these days, because they are highly motivated : They wrote, Dear Santa, my name is ….., I would like to have XXXX. Thank you. Sometime, they even drew a little picture for Santa. Because they keep changing their mind about the toys they want, there is always a need to update Santa their current thinking.

The hard part is that they insist to mail the letters by themselves and drop the letters in the mailbox. It is so hard to disappoint them as I look at their faces full of wonders. We put postage and I stamp our own address on the back, hope that mailman would understand.

Santa Claus represents an authority figure who can really judge the good and bad. They cry each time if Daddy wants to call Santa about their naughtiness. This is so serious. We are making the ginger man cookies now, because they want Santa to have best cookies and milk when he comes.
Story Land (New Hampshire) is a great theme park for young children; however, some of the characters may be too real to some young children.

As we entered the park, we spotted Humpty-Dumpty sitting on the wall. Although kids love the riddle, they were not too fond of the gigantic Egg head. They complained that it was too scary and refused to take a close look. Humpty Dumpty is so cute and funny in the book but the life size statues becomes monster-like. We fast passed Humpty Dumpty, and they still showed fear to the old Lady in the shoe. Right after the shoe house, another scaring face showed up, the talking face on the grandfather tree. The talking face certainly freaked them out. They demanded to go home at that point; it was only 5 minutes after we arrived at Story Land.

We showed them the park map and told them, there were many things else to do in the park. They agreed to close their eyes, hold hands and walk to the little dreamer's play area. The play sets calmed them down finally and the ball house energized them. Alice's tea cup gave them first excitement in the park. Swam boats, Buccaneer pirate ship were fun and imaginative. They closed their eyes when a crown walked by. Train is still their all time favor and carousel is a must-visit. Three pigs' story was enchanting. Ocean of fun spray ground is refreshing. Surprisingly, my kids do not like rides too much; they may still be bumpy and scaring to them. The boys were disappointed to see Cinderella but not a King or a knight in the castle. The highlight of the day is in the loopy lab where has canons, vacuums, shooters and a house full of colorful balls. The loop lab also contained a group of frantic, screaming, enthusiastic children. My children could stay in loopy lab all day long if we did not drag them out of there.

On the way out, we needed to cover their eyes as we passed the grandfather's tree house, old woman in the shoe and Humpty Dumpty. As I know, they are not the only ones afraid of life size costumed characters. One of their little friends was afraid of the real life Chuck E Cheese. She cried non-stop when Chuck E. Cheese showed up. The same child was also afraid of Goofy and Donald Duck at Disney World.

My children made peace with Humpty Dumpty at the end of day. They rhymed Humpty Dumpty in the car.

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

It is no secret that French Fries are tasty enough for citizens and presidents. Tomas Jefferson served "potatoes" fried in "French manner" at a White house dinner and introduced "French fried potatoes" to colonists in the late 1700s.

It is such a popular food in the world with high name recognition. The origin of French Fries is controversy; it might come from Belgian but not from France. US congress once tried to rename French fries to freedom fries. House cafeterias were ordered to list French fries for "freedom fries" in 2003 after France opposed the Iraq War in UN. It has also been known as "American fries" in many countries where McDonald, Burger King or Wendy's are present.

French fries are also being linked to the obesity and are classified by many as "unhealthy" food. Many health conscious people may avoid or totally refuse eating French fries. I recently experienced with an extreme example of anti-French fries. One of my children's friends came to my house for a play date. I served some veggies chips with sandwich for lunch. This 5-year old American boy looked the veggie chips and asked me if they are French Fries? First I thought I did not hear him clearly then I was surprised to learn that he has not seen real French Fries in person yet. His family has shielded him well from any fast food and sweets. Given the rich history associated with French Fries, I could only suggest his parents that it may be O.K. to give your child French fries once per five years.

I decided to start a home based business and to be a stay home mother. A lot of people at work were shocked and cannot believe that I am actually going to work as a full time at home. As they email me some job lists, I say, "thank you" and toss them to the recycle bin.

The reality is that Mother is a full time job. There is always something demanding for attention. Second, work at home gives me freedom to do something I really like instead of everything that I must do it. I believe, in this land of opportunity, I can fulfill my dreams by actions. Third, I am given myself a chance. I will not know until I try.

The immediate big change for me to leave my job is Money. My household income drops 40% that is a significant setback for family finance. At the meantime, staying at home makes everyone in the house happier. It means:

No quilt for leaving them behind.

No one yells at me.

No luxurious purchase; buying on sale.

No rush to my children out of house before 8:00am. I gain the freedom first time in my life to tell them to sleep more, when the little ones tell me, " I am sleepy".

No emergency call from Daycare to my husband; No demand for immediate pick-up.

No late fee for daycare.

No take-out dinner; nor instant noodles all the time.

No crying for business trips.

No more"mommy, you love work more than me".

No finish cutting the grass in the weekends.

No toy in regular days (not-X'mas, not-birthday..).

No toy? That might mean end of world to the twins.

I discussed my employment decision with them before walked away. I told them that I will not make money if I stay at home with them. "Do you want toys or you want mommy to stays at home?"

The replies are sweet and synchronized. "I want mommy stays home." How about the toys? " I will write to Santa to ask for more".

At daycare, my children enjoy painting a lot, however, they express less interest in writing. Their teacher made an observation that one of them could not write his own name in one line. The same child cannot say " L and r" sounds clearly, and sometime, use she and he wrong accroding to the teacher. The teacher repeatedly commented that he is behind development compared to his peers and he should see speech therapist. The same teacher did not let him take off his jacket in a hot day, because his inner shirt is a Batman who is violent.

After hearing, four similar comments from the same teacher, as his mother, I would like to discuss with her comments with her. To me, the teacher has a very strict standard on children development and behavior. And the daycare is not providing nurture environment to young children.

First, a four-year old does not need to know how to write. Second, every child has his or her own development speed; my child is still developing his articulation and fine motor skills. Third, L is a hard sound for children; some kids develop articulation skills later. Without inputs from professionals, it is not fair to say, he is behind normal development.

I thought, I was cool, calm and collected when I spoke to the teacher. But she was apparently offended and felt her authority was threatened by my comments. At the end of conversation, oddly enough, the teacher told me, her mother is a speech therapist and she has Doctor of law degree. Those were not related to our discussion in the parental teacher meeting and they sounded very weird. After this meeting, we decided to take kids out of this daycare and we would asked advice from their pediatrician and some public school teachers on his articulation development.

The speech and articulation development charts from professionals make me feel much better. The boy needs more time and attention. We will work on his pronunciation at a gradual speed and monitor closely on his progress.

Those are the school project for Mothers day; the question are: 1. What do your mother do? 2. What do you love to do with your mother? My children said a lot to teachers what they thought about their mommy. The teachers recorded words for each child and hang them on the class wall. They are super- sweet. Here are words from my children. They make me happy and, they will make me smile for years to come.

My mommy is a girl.
My mommy loves to hug me.
My mommy loves to kiss me.
My mommy gives me candies.
My mommy gives me toys.
My mommy gives me a bath.
My mommy dresses me up.
My mommy cleans my mess.
My mommy cooks dinner.
My mommy covers my ears with her hands during thunderstorms.

We just had a vacation with my brother and he introduced catching sand crabs to the twins. They love it. The crab hunt experience has become an unforgettable adventure for them and they talk to their little friends all the time. I think that they are proud of themselves, because they are the only two who have caught sand crabs by their hands among their little friends.

Sand crabs are small, fast creature living by the beach. Sand crabs are shy who often bury themselves in the wet sand. My brother's method for catching sand crabs in the beach is:

The tools: Flashlight, a thin stick, scoop or a small shovel, a fishing nets and a container for collecting your crabs.

The time: Night. The temperature is cooler in the summer and the darkness adds more fun for crab hunt. My four years old feels that they are entitled to work at night if it is for a crab hunt.

Where are sand crabs? Look at the small holes (bubbles) with foot prints (messy tracks) in the sand beach.

Test the residency: poke the hole with the stick and look under flashlight to see if the crab is still living there.

Dig the hole narrow deep and fast.

If you spot the crabs, act as fast as you can. By all means, and all tools you have including, hands, nets, containers, helpers… to surrender and catch them. Sand crabs move very fast, you will need to stay alert and be ready all the time. At night, the flashlight intimidates the crabs. So shine the light at the crabs and then they will be motionless for moments. Catch them immediately when they are paralyzed by the light.

To twins, Agu (their uncle) has become a hero because he is the one who taught them to catch crabs and he set them free back to beach.

All men in my household regardless of their ages and sizes are obsessed with Dinosaurs. I feel lonely sometime because I am the only one being left behind who cannot pronounce Hypsilophodon. I need my four-year old to tell me how to say, hip-see-lof-oh-don ,who is a plant eater and run very fast. I think that I lack the "dinosaur gene" and have a loose connection with this gigantic species. On the other hand, the dinosaur gene may be X-linked. Therefore all boys in this family, 4 or 40 years old, are attracted to Dinosaurs. The twins have been classified as bona-fide Dinosaur fans since they were 6 months old.

They were staring at the Dinosaur pictures and tried to grab the Dinosaurs.

"Dino" is the third word they said after " Dada" and "mama".

They tried to walk and eat like a dinosaur (T-Rex).

They are compulsive shoppers for dinosaur toys and books.

They consistently expand their knowledge of Dinosaurs.

They can watch "the land before time" again and again.

They remember all the details about the dinosaurs described in books.

They sleep with Dinosaurs.

I cannot figure out why this vanished species is so appealing to young "male" children. The twins reveal the secrets of their beloved animals:

Dinosaurs can be very big and fierce.

Dinosaurs can be small and cute.

Dinosaurs can be anywhere, on the land, in air, and in water.

Dinosaurs can be in different shapes and colors.

Dinosaurs are powerful, alert and feisty.

Dinosaurs can tremble the buildings and break the tree trunks.

Dinosaurs are goofy, because their head size is not proportional to their body size.

Dinosaurs are loving. The parents fight for survival of their children.

Dinosaurs are no longer living in this world, so they pose no harm to us.

Dinosaurs are mysterious, because nobody has ever seen them in live.

Digging is the only way to find dinosaur fossils and boys love playing with sands.

Dinosaurs are discipline runners and the twins like to run with dinosaurs.

The tales of dinosaurs lead to endless imagination and generation of ideas.

It is a monumental achievement for parents whose child is going to kindergarten. All the crying, chaos and sleepless nights will be in the memory. Kindergarten represents a different social structure, life and learning style to a family. The children will need to get up earlier to attend school before 8:30 am in the morning. They need to eat lunch in school cafeteria by themselves. They also need to sit in School bus and there is no more 2-hour nap time... They sound normal and plain; however these things have started to give me anxiety attacks. On top of those, I start to worry about the classroom placement for my twins. It will be a difficult decision for me to make if the twins should be in the same or different classrooms. There is no solid research data on measuring acceptance, achievement, and adjustment of twins or multiples in same and different classrooms after my vigorous research in the internet. Both separation into different classrooms and staying together in the same classroom have advantages and disadvantages. It depends on different needs for different twins. The final decision should be beneficial to the twins.
The advantages of being in the different classrooms:

For teachers and other classmates

Avoid comparison

Avoid fascination and attention to twins that distracts normal educational process

For twins themselves

Avoid distraction between them

Avoid harmful competition

Decrease dependency

Fostering individuality

The advantages of being in the same classrooms:

They need each other: separation anxiety occurs in young children. Twins have each other all their life; it is hard to cut the bond right away in a new, scaring school.

Sibling support in the class

A positive school experience should be the key for them in kindergarten.

Receive a consistent education experience.

It is more convenient for the family

Reduce the number of after school parties and keep family unit intact for parties.

Reduce the time requirement for parents involved in school activities.

The parents will need to keep the job to pay the college tuition.

Avoid jealousy and competition! It is impossible for me to present in both classes at the same time, or watch two school functions the same time. Every parent of multiples knows that competition for attention is there all the time.

Provide positive competition

Not all the twins or multiples are overly competitive; some sibling pressure and competition actually promote learning.

Right now, I am hoping to keep twins together in the kindergarten since it is a new environment for them and they have expressed their own opinions multiple times that they want to be together in the same classroom. Having each other in a strange environment provides some reassurance for them and for me. The reasons favoring the same classrooms in the kindergarten for my twins are:

They cry each time when I tell them the changing to big boy school this fall. I do not want them to have bad experience or impression about the school. A bad early education experience will set the stage for later academic problems.

The presence of each other can ease anxiety, provide support and assist adjustment in the new school.

They teach each other and learn from each other that are positive in learning.

There are plenty of opportunities to separate them later. It is better to do so latter (after 7 years old).

There are not identical twins; there is no confusion to teachers or classmates.

The decision of separating or keep twins together may not come from us (parents and children) at the end, because the placement policy may have been established by school, and parents will have little influence on it. I hope there is some flexibility in school, so parents can be involved to decide what the best is for their twins or multiples after they start their class (es). All parties involved can adjust separating or keeping them together after evaluation. A pleasant early school experience sets the foundation for future academic and social accomplishments.
Most of drugs are developed to treat adult diseases, and most of them have not proven to be safe in child by animal or epidemic studies. Lacking oversight of drug prescription used in young children is posing a threat to our children and an abuse of the public health system. Influence from pharmaceutical industry, lobbies and aggressive drug advertisements have distorted American health system. One clear example is the over prescription of psychiatric drugs in children. It was unheard of the use of psychiatric drugs in preschoolers 20 years ago and then, now psychiatric drugs have been heavily prescribed to young children to " cure" their behavior problems. In 2007, Massachusetts alone has 82,900 children under age 5, were given psychiatric or anti-psychotic drugs (Boston globe). Because of increased psychiatric illness in children, psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis in children are highly controversy.

Before you feed your child any psychiatric drugs, please read the article published in Psychiatric drug facts with Dr. Peter Breggin (http://www.breggin.com/). There are medical evidences against the over use of psychiatric drugs in children.

Psychiatric drug has adverse reaction and can do more harm than good.

The side effects of common psychiatric drugs (cchr.org)

National Institute of Medical Health (nimh.nh.gov)

On March 22, 2004, the FDA has issued an advisory that the new generation of anti-depressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Effexor, Serzone, and Remeron) is at risk associated with violence and suicide (the truth about antidepressants, brmecham.com).

Benzodiazepines can cause mental dysfunction and addiction (Panic disorder, about.com).

Growth inhibition and mental suppression caused by ADHD drugs in children (http://www.jcrows.com/adhd.html).

Antipsychotic drugs can cause movement disorder (Tardive dyskinesia).(Mental Health, Ask.com)

According to a study published in the Journal of Pediatric Medicine, it reported that a 98% of all infants have bipolar disorder. The babies suffer from being manic-depressive because they had troubles concentrating during the day, often struggled to sleep at night and could not be counted on to take care of themselves-all classic symptoms of manic depression (the onion; Psychcentral.com). Most of us may get a laugh from it. But it illustrated the danger to use adult diagnostic criteria to evaluate mental illness in very young children.

A 4-year old girl, Rebecca Riley, died from overdose of psychiatric drugs (CBS News). The poor kid was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of two at Tufts-New England Medical Center because of her hyperactivity. Rebecca's mother was convicted of second-degree murder this year in the fatal drug overdose of her own daughter (Masslive.com). Prosecutors pointed Rebecca's parents, concocted mental illness of their daughter in order to collect federal disability benefits. In the verdict, the 4-year old died of a severe pneumonia in the absence of any medical treatment. When I first saw this news, I was shocked by how ignorant and irresponsible of Rebecca's parents and doctor was. Were there standard guidelines to be used for diagnosis of bipolar disorder in two years old? Currently, there is no definitive medical test for children's bipolar disorder. Yet, nearly a million of children have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and treated with drugs which are not proven to be safe in children. Can you believe that the number of bipolar children is more than that of autism (prevalence is estimated at 1 in 110 births) and diabetes (0.22%) combined?
Bipolar disorder in children and adolescents: a Caution (Psycheducation.org)
Pediatric Bipolar Disorder
Child & Adolescent bipolar foundation
It is dangerous to rely on drugs to cure all the behavior problems. The demand for patience, education, conscience and caring overwhelms the need for a wonder drug.

Do not wear rubber gloves when clean silver. The rubber corrodes silver and promotes tarnish. Use plastic gloves instead. Avoid using rubber bands or seals on silver items.

Glass liners can be used to protect silver flatware when anti-silver food is served such as: table salt, olives, salad dressing, eggs, vinegar and fruit juice. Plastic liners are the other choice, but plastic is harmful to health and people should try to avoid using it if it is possible.

Do not let food stand on silver flatware, rinse it immediately after use.

Do not scratch silver with sharps including utensils and cleaning sponge.

Do not clean silver in a dishwasher.

Clean silver tarnish with Baking soda:

Make a baking soda paste by mixing water with baking soda powder. Coat the silver item with the paste and rub to clean until tarnish is gone. Rinse the paste off with lukewarm water, and dry with clean white clothing. This "semi-dry" silver clean method is good for jewelry which has gem stones. It does not damage the stone.

Clean silver with Toothpaste:

Another "Semi-dry" clean method for clean silver jewelry with gem stones. Gently rub the items with white (non-gel) toothpaste. Rinse the toothpaste off with lukewarm water, and dry with clean white clothing.

Clean silver tarnish with Baking soda, Aluminum and Salt mix:

It can be used for sterling silver jewelry without gem stone. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% of silver and 7.5% of copper.

Place a sheet of aluminum foil in a container or use an aluminum disposable plate. Add 8 Oz of hot tap water, 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon salt. Stir to dissolve the baking soda and salt. Put the silver item to the hot mix, leave it overnight. Next day, rinse with lukewarm water and dry with clothing.

Boiling water is suggested to be used by others (YouTube), but actually, hot or warm water may do the job. It depends how tarnished the item is. Boiling water silver clean treatment is more effective for cleaning old tarnish. Warm water with longer soaking may be as effective as the boiling water and the procedure is safer.

Silver polish: commercially available silver polish such as 3M 625 tarni-shield, Hagerty silver polish, is available in store.

Metal Brite Electrolytic Silver Cleaning Plate: I saw this advertisement on TV. It seems to be an effective method if all the home silver clean methods fail.

Expensive silver: seek help from Professionals.

Schools are places where children can learn and grow. They should be objective, and safe for children, teachers and parents. Schools also have social responsibilities to educate our children and prepare them for their future. In modern society, a child's education is a mixed result from parents, schools, media, government and legislation. Every party needs to be sensible to their role and cannot over abuse their authority. Parents would consider needs of their child. Schools and others should put benefits of most children first. With that being said, it is not easy to balance each authority especially if there are a child and emotion involved.

A few of school controversies for us to think about.

Case 1: A Catholic School in Boulder, Colorado, refused enrollment of a child in its preschool program because the student's parents are lesbians (Politics daily). It is not unheard of rejection from private schools over many strange reasons. There was a case in New York that a child was rejected to enter kindergarten program because the school has no-sibling policy (New York Sun). It is usually less controversy since private schools establish their own rules. Most cases will not become high profile. A lot of little boys or girls have been rejected by many private schools. Does Catholic or other private school have too much authority to reject children for various reasons? Dose the public have too much authority to ask private schools to change their policy?

Case 2: A few years ago, a Lexington (MA) Dad was arrested, spent one night in jail over objections to homosexual curriculum in son's kindergarten class (news April 29: Boston globe; Park incidence: massresistance.org). The father was charged with trespass in school property. Did Lexington School have too much authority to send a parent to jail? Did Lexington parents have too much authority to influence public school?

Case 3: Kansas State Legislation banned teaching evolution. Kansas law proclaims that "All Kansans are descendants of Adam and Eve and were created by the hand of God without the help of Charles Darwin." (Assimilated Press) There are overwhelming evidences to support Darwin's evolution (Darwin's theory of evolution: bioweb) and Vatican has declared that Darwin's theory of evolution was compatible with Christian faith (Times). Does State Legislation have too much authority on teaching? Do people in Kansas have authority to demand the right to learn evolution?

Case 4: Hobe Sound School (Florida) classified a mother's punishment as illegal after she skipped her son's lunch intentionally (WPTV.com). The child forgot packing his own lunch and his mother wanted to teach him responsibility by e-mailing teachers not to provide lunch to her kid. Do parents have authority to tell school not to feed their child? Every child develops language skills at different speeds. Children who show signs of speech impediments should be helped as soon as possible because speech is critical for their learning, communication and social development.

Parents may not be aware of their child's problem because parents are accustomed to their child's voice. Common speech patterns in a child such as, frequency of using language, fluency of speech and pronunciation of words, should be monitored by parents. About 10 percent of children have communication problems including speech and hearing disorders. Early remediation is more effective and it can avoid the situation that a child's speech becomes the amusement object for others. Possible hearing dysfunction, voice problem and aphasia could be diagnosed earlier based on daily interaction between a child and his/her parents. Articulation, language receptive and expressive problems may be noticed at preschool ages.

If a child is difficult to understand by others and frustrated in oral communication, he/she could benefit from speech therapy program. If child's speech is improving quarterly, she/he likely catches the standard speech over time. Here are some sensible steps to figure out if additional speech therapy program is needed for your child.

List your own observations on your child's speech development.

a.The sounds he/she has problems with.
b.The position of the sounds in a word (initial, medial or final).
c. The frequency of mispronunciation.
d. Can the child understand parents' language?
e. Can the child make sentences appropriately?
f. Is stuttering a problem (fluency disorders) affecting the child?

Obtain feedback and documentation from teacher regarding the child's communication and language skills at school.

Go over your and teacher's documents with your child's pediatrician. Discuss with your child's pediatrician to decide if speech therapy is appropriate.

An oral examination can identify possible irregularities in the structure of the child's mouth.

Hearing evaluation performed by an audiologist.

Ask for referrals of speech therapists (certificated) from the pediatrician.

The qualification of speech-language pathologists (or therapists)(Bureau of Labor). The private health insurers generally require therapists to be licensed to qualify for reimbursement.

A master's degree in speech-language pathology.

License and certification (in 47 states):

A passing score on the national examination on speech-language pathology.

300-375 hours of supervised clinical experience.

9 months postgraduate professional clinical experience.

Continuing education for license renewal.

Kennedy Airport tower (Boston Fox 25 news). JFK airport is the sixth busiest airport in the U.S. Consequently, two employees at JFK airport tower are on administrative leave due to the lack of professionalism. Their futures and their families' futures will be decided by the final verdict from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This kind of distractions is totally unacceptable to FAA according to FAA spokesman. The development of this story is highly debatable. Some people feel the punishment is out of proportion and the other would completely agree with FAA that the work is too important that has zero tolerance of errors.

I asked myself which side I am on. After 2 days, I remain undecided. The fact is that there is no doubt of the importance of air traffic control (ATC). Many lives are dependent on air traffic transmission. I agree with the idea that ATC room is not a playground. The air controllers were probably not thinking wisely. The child appeared to be under supervision as a control explained the reason for the young voice, and instructions were given to pilots on the ground. Given how bad our economic is, I have deep fear for the air controllers and their families if they lose their jobs. I hope that there is a way to save their jobs.

The case of child in air traffic control tower is extreme and not common because of the demand for their absolute perfection. Most of parents, similar to me, probably do enjoy some freedom of bringing kids to work. Sometime, it is unavoidable if child is sick suddenly. I was in trouble once that I took my 3-year old sick child to a 9:00 AM company meeting. My kid was throwing up at 8: 35 AM right after I dropped him at daycare. The teacher called me on my cell phone, I turned around to pick my poor child and then we rushed to my scheduled company meeting at 9:00. My boss was surprised to see us, and told me after the meeting that I should drop the kid home before I come to the meeting. I thought that it is a common sense: Kids are sent to daycare because nobody can take care of them at work.

It is difficult with a high profile case. But, with so many competent staffs, FAA will have an ideal resolution harboring merits, humanity and professionalism.

It congratulates parents that your child is old enough to go to " real school". At the meantime, parents need to prepare proof of residency, birth certificate, immunization form and general health forms. The whole family will have new adventures soon.

As public health concerns, Massachusetts General law 105 CMR 220.000 requires school children be immunized against:

Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis: DTP or DTap-5 doses

Polio-4 doses

Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)-2 doses

Hepatitis B-3 doses

Varicella (Chicken Pox)-1 dose

These five vaccines are essential for entrance of public kindergarten in Massachusetts. The immunization record is a part of registration submission. The registration time varies among cities and towns, generally it runs from March to June. Children who are immunized according to the CDC recommended schedule may need to be immunized up to 4 or 5 injections during their hospital visit for the"kindergarten shots". In the guideline from Center of Disease Control, the age for receiving immunization of DTaP, Polio, MMR and chicken pox is around 4-6 years old. Many of children borne after March may not be immunized with any of these at the age of four. These children may need to have 4 kindergarten shots in one hospital visit. The number may go up if Hepatitis B doses are not up to schedule.

Most vaccines have been proven to be safe to most children, but four or five shots at one time are awfully too many for a little child. Each vaccine has side-effects and the side effects accumulate upon multiple immunization. Mild side effects, such as: fever, redness or swelling in injection site are relatively frequent in children. Fever alone, the frequency is about 1 in 4 children who get DTap shot. It is about 1 in 6 children with MMR vaccine; 1 in 10 with chickenpox vaccine; 1 in 15 with hepatitis B vaccine. The frequency of soreness and redness is even higher. Health care providers should spread these immunization into 2 or 3 hospital visits, however, for the convenience of hospital, they usually cluster all the immunizations to one monster " kindergarten shots". It does not seem to be proper to me. If hospitals do not feel compelled to arrange multiple visits, alternatively, CDC can specify different immunization times for DTaP, Polio, MMR and chicken pox vaccines. It will result a better timetable for immunization in young children.

The obscurity of immunization timetable is evident after I witnessed soreness, swelling, vomiting and fever in my children for last three days after they received their kindergarten shots. I did not do my homework before the appointment because I trusted hospital and their immunization schedule. "Both of them had been used for many others and they should be fine" I thought. I did not check my children's immunization record and did not realize so many vacciines involved for "kindergarten shots".

I was speechless when the nurse showed up with 8 needles on her hands; four for each of my twins. I would call it off if she had told me the number of the shots before she came up with all the needles full of liquid. I am suffering from my own conscience becaue of the side effects from too many vaccines at once. The side effects are not life-threatening but annoying enough to make twins stay awake at night and throw up. I wish, I could have done differently.

I am warning all the parents who have any child at pre-school age to be aware of the "monster kindergarten shots" and to avoid to have all the shots given at once. It is a right thing to check the immunization record in advance and make two appointments to spread kindergarten shots over multiple visits.

Coughing is a common symptom associated with cold, flu, or viral infection. Coughs may sound miserable and awful for a small child, but it is not usually a sign of a serious illness. Cough helps clearance of mucus secretion that may block the airway and throat. Parents should not give a child younger than 6 years old any counter medication to relieve the congestion and cough. The better medicine for a child is no medicine. Food and Drug Administration has recommended no use of cough and cold medicine for children under the age of 2 in 2007 because of serious and potential life-threatening side effects (CNN News). A CDC report showed a link between cold medicines and emergency room visits in infants and toddlers (1,519 children in 2004-2005). Drug makers had changed the labels since then that cough medications are not recommended for children younger than 4 or 6 years old.

Studies have shown that cold and cough medications are not effective for treating cold symptoms in children and they are among the top ten reasons for toxic ingestions in children under 6. Parents should read labels carefully before they administrate any medication to a child and never ever give your child more medicine than recommended.

Toxicity, cough and cold preparation (e-medicine)

Cough medicine poisoning in children (mnpoison.org)

Before you buy children's cold medicines (about.com)

Help your child to relieve their congestion and cough.

Steam: Have a pot of hot water on the table, and let the child breath the warm steam for 10 minutes. The warm stream can help relieve congestion. Just be careful, keep hands off the hot pot and no spill of hot water.

Lots of fluids: chicken soup, broth, or water.

Humidifier: humidifier helps with the discomfort of congestion but make sure to change filter and clean it frequently according to the manufacturer's instructions. Dirty humidifier is a culture ground for molds.

Saline nasal wash or spray: suction bulb can be used for pull mucus out of the nose in a little child or infant who cannot blow their own noses. Gentle salt water wash can help cleaning out the mucus.

Honey: Buckwheat honey has been shown to be an effective cough suppressant (ABC news). Honey can be given to children older than a year old. Honey may contain bacterial spores that produce clostridium botulinum and cause infant food poisoning. Infant younger than 1 year old cannot be given any honey.

Parents should discuss selection of summer camps with their little camper(s) and find an age-proper summer camp with fun. There are some questions you should also consider when searching for summer camps.

What kinds of activity will your child enjoy most?

Where is the location of the summer camp?

For your convenience, you do not wish to drive a long distance to drop and pick up your children.

What is the purpose of the camp?

Sport, technology, art, writing, outdoor, general?

What is the age range of campers?

It may not a good idea if your child is the youngest or oldest one in this summer camp.

What are the qualifications of the staff?

Education, previous experiences of being camp instructors, certification of CPR and first aid etc.

What is the safety preparation or medical aids for the campers?

What is the ratio of staff and children?

What is the cost?

What is the cost for early arrival and extended hours?

Ask comments and feedback from friends or relatives who had experience with this camp.

Check on-line information to see if there is any complaint against the camp organization.

Mysummercamp.com

KinderCare

Masscamps.com

Emagination Computer Camps

Tech Camps

Before your kids are off to a summer camp, you should make sure that vaccinations of your child are up-to-date. The drug maker, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was aware of the cardiac risks and kept them from the public.

Rosiglitazone, as know as, Avandia, was introduced in 1999 and has been widely used as monotherapy or in fixed-dose combination with either metformin (Avandamet, GSK) or glimpiride (Avadaryl, GSK) for treating type II diabetes. Rosiglitazone is an agonist for peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-g). Avandia increases insulin sensitivity, reduces circulating insulin levels, and improves glycemic control in diabetic patients. Another PPAR agonist, troglitazone, was removed from the market because of its toxicity effects on liver. It is not surprising that Avandia has cardiac toxicity since peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor gamma is involved in multiple signal transduction pathways.

The other possible side effects of Avandia include:

Upper respiratory infection.

Broken bones in women

Headache

Edema (swelling or water weight gain)

Back pain

Anemia

Medications often associate with some unwanted side effects. Drugs are approved due to greater benefits than the health risks in some classes of patients. A good example is anti-cancer drugs; most of small molecule anti-cancer drugs are toxic to cells. They are approved because they can prolong life.

Some of side effects are caused by drug-drug interaction in patients who are taking multiple medicines in a regular base. Patients need to read the labels and review the available info carefully. Talk to doctors or pharmacists to know your medications, and to have better control of your own health.

Prevention of diabetes is far more effective than any of the medications. Reduce sugar consumption, eat balance diet and keep moving.

Avandia information (RxList.com)

Avandia News (NY times)

Yahoo News

A number of diseases such as, diabetes, obesity, hypoglycemia and dental problems, have been associated with high intake of sugars. These sweet drinks contain a lot of calories with little or no nutritional benefit. Sugar also reduces immunity, interferes normal metabolism, and results in various harmful responses to your body. Given the fact that modern meals are rich in sugar, parents should watch sugar intake of their children. A healthy start is a good start for your child.

Although fruit juice is often given to young children as a healthy food, it is not as healthy as one would think. A 12-ounce of orange juice contains 180 calories which is equivalent of eating 3 chocolate cookies. Juice may contain vitamins but the major component is "high calories". The benefit is less than the harm for children who eat plenty of sugar or have weight problems. Young children feel full quickly if they drink a lot of juice and decrease the amount of food they eat. For adults or older children, juice adds excess calories and causes weight gain.

Evidently, Sodas and other sweetened drinks, which are full of sugar, are worse than juice. Many sodas also contain caffeine; they are no good to your children. So if we do the math and add up all the calories from sweet drinks, the number is easily over 360 calories if a child drinks more than 2 serves of sweet drinks per day.

Sweet drinks and obesity

Sugar is bad

Children are born with sweet tooth, parents should not take away their pleasure completely. One child can only be a child once and we need to let child have some fun for being a child. A lot of parents want to feed children all natural food. It is good only if the amount of sugar in daily diet is regulated. Children should drink plenty of water, nonfat milk and other beverages with little sugar, salt, or calories. I meant replacement of some juice with no calories such as sparkling water, diet sodas. This suggestion may sound outrageous to many parents; however, with consideration of all the health risk and benefits, it is a sensible thing to do.

There is no solid evidence suggesting an association of artificial sweeteners with cancer in humans. In an early study of laboratory animal suggested that cyclamate in combination with saccharin (e.g. Sweet'N Low) can cause bladder cancer in rats. However, subsequent studies have not produced the same results. In addition, human epidemiology studies have shown no association of saccharin with bladder cancer. The use of cyclamate is banned by FDA currently; the FDA's concerns about cyclamate are not cancer related.

The other popular artificial sweetener, aspartame (e.g. NutraSweet and Equal) was approved by FDA after numerous carcinogenicity studies which showed no adverse effects of aspartame in laboratory animals. The risk of aspartame to brain and central nervous system has been arisen, but no solid human epidemiology data support the risk. An animal study in which equivalent to drinking 8 to 2083 cans of diet soda was fed to laboratory rats and the rats had high incidences of lymphomas and leukemias in a dose-independent manner. A subsequent study showed no association of aspartame with development of brain cancer, lymphoma or leukemia. Aspartame warning has been appeared in many websites. The validation of risk may need to be assessed carefully for public health reason.

321 recipes.com

Earthclinic

Sucralose (e.g. Splenda), acesulfame potassium (e.g. Sweet one, Sunett) and Neotame are general sweeteners approved by the FDA after more than 100 safety studies. No cancer risk was found in these 100 plus experiments.

Artificial sweetener studies can be found in National cancer institute .

Juice does more harmful than good if excess amount is consumed. Generally, I will not categorize diet soda or diet drink as a healthy food, but with risk factors of diabetes and obesity in mind, ironically, diet soda and drink become healthy alternatives. Diabetes and Obesity pose immediate threats to our children and public health, a simple prevention is reduction of sugar consumption.

Artificial sweeteners in Mediciine Net

Diabetes statistics (American diabetes Association)

In 2007, a total of 23.6 million children and adults in the US have diabetes (7.8% of the population)

One of every 400-600 children and adolescents has type 1 diabetes.

Obesity statistics

60 million Americans are overweight.

Almost 20% of children in America are overweight.

Obesity statistics: Healthy American org

Obesity in the US (Wikipedia)

Child Obesity statistics (obesity.ygoy.com)

Sports also help kids to develop their motor skills, coordination, confidence, and prevent obesity. However formal leagues may not be suitable for every young child. Children at 5 and younger may be too young for most types of organized sports due to lack of full comprehension and mature skills. Parents should make sports fun and less competitive for young children. Unstructured free plays such as: running, climbing, kicking, dancing, cycling, swimming, and dancing, are good choices for young children, and you could do it in your own backyard or home.

I let my children attend the "sport sampler" class in the YMCA for them to get a taste of different sports and for us to see if they show preferences for certain sports. Many sports class are offered by YMCA including: succor, basketball, T-ball, football, and baseball etc which children play in a team setting. We did not know what is the best one for our children. First, my kids did not follow instructions very well. Second, they had no idea about all these sports mentioned above. Their Dad and Mom are not hard-core sport fames and we don't watch any sport in a regular base. We have given up watching football and golf after my children were born and cartoons have became the major entertainment for my family. We hoped that the "sport sampler" would teach them team work, and good sportsmanship. At the meantime, we could assess their physical development such as motor skills, eye-and-hand coordination, and also we may know which sport they are most interested.

Toddler development

Preschooler development

There were two or three instructors in each class and there were about 12 little kids ranged from 3-5 years old. The sports they taught were including: basketball, baseball, football, succor, hockey, and a bouncy house at the final class. A good thing about the class is that each one of little kids was taught and practiced some basic skills for the sport. A bad thing is that there were lags for them to wait; most of them appeared to be bored. It was extremely funny to watch their responses. Some older kids would entertain themselves and play the available balls by themselves. Most of younger ones including my two either just chased each other around or sit there making faces. The class size might be too big, and too much waiting time, children actually did not get enough physical activity. I think, we will keep them running around in the yard and swimming in the weekends for now. We can send them to an organized sport again when they are 5 years old. Learning good sportsmanship may need to wait after they know which side of field they should run towards.

Common Anti aging Tips:

No smoking

Protect from the sun

Healthy diet rich in antioxidants

Clean skin

Moisturize and exfoliate

Exercise

Drink water

Stress free

Food supplement: Q10, vitamins, minerals

Do drink too much alcohol
