Every Valentines day I plan on buying an buying an adorable, yet humorous card for Brett from Etsy, etc, but yet always lag and end up the day before in CVS buying the usual standby to add my little love note. We celebrate Valentines day in a simple fashion with just sweet cards or little gifts just to tell one another how much we love the other. No dozen roses, usually no real fancy dinner. Just little things. These cards from Wit & Whistle perfectly fit the bill. Just the right amount of whimsy, with a touch of love, and a dash of dirty humor sets the tone for a great Valentines day.

Just wish I hadn't lagged yet again this year.

23 Weeks

Week 23. Feeling good, but this weekend literally FLEW by. Starting to get to that point of "shit - we are going to have a baby in 4 months. Better start getting a move on it" mode. So that's what we did all weekend. Friday was a major closet clean out. Sadly, I have been forced to give half of my closet to Brett, as he is giving his to the baby. Really more, like a quarter, because luckily, he doesn't hoard clothing the way I do. But shoes, he has a lot of, and we haven't even tackled that one yet. Saturday, we made a huge Salvation Army trip, and then took some extra pieces of furniture to his parents house in Wisconsin. And went to IKEA to pick up a storage bed. That place is just crazy. I haven't been there since I moved to Chicago ten years ago, and I was quickly reminded why. Nothing easy about a trip to IKEA.

Sunday wasn't any quieter. At least we did squeeze in a relaxing brunch, but then Home Depot. And after that, my gem of a man painted our bedroom all day long. Actually - he is still painting while I write this post, and watch the Grammys (Seriously Adele, I love you). Sometimes, there are some major perks to being pregnant.

Did you notice I curled my hair. My hair is in a serious transition state. Getting too long, and needs some sort of highlight assistance. So out of boredom this morning I curled my hair. Brett loves it this way. I'm still not sold. I think I have to keep trying it out to see if it grows on me.

Something happened last night, something that I had been eager about since the moment we found out about the Baby Bender. Brett and I were laying in bed, exhausted after a night of closet / drawer cleaning (we are on a MAJOR organizing binge) and I started to feel the baby move in a much stronger fashion than ever before. So I put my hand on my belly to see if you could actually feel anything on the outside. To my delight, you could, and I grabbed Brett's hand, laid it across my big baby belly. We turned down all the volume, so there was no sound, and all of sudden, Baby Bender kicked, or moved, or did something so strongly to let Daddy know that it was there. Brett's face lit up like a Christmas tree. Total amazement.

And with that kick, there was three.

It was the sweetest moment of my life.

Mostly this winter I have been bouncing around in either my cowboy boots, or a various mixture of Frye's or Sorels. (Its winter - even my feet prefer to hibernate), but since last weekend was fairly warm I decided to head out in some pretty, not-so-covered shoes. These Tory Burch Drea Wedges were a Christmas gift from my parents. They have it all - height, comfy-ness, that perfect goes with everything tanned leather. They are perfect. My mom picked them up on sale last season, but they are available again through Saks.

I have to admit that one of my favorite things about warm weather is the endless options of perfectly lovely footwear.

Speaking of, since it is the beginning of Fashion Week, I am drooling over these Alexander Wang Liya pumps. I so wanted the blue or silver toned Fabiana's, and I lagged and missed out. But not this year. I am determined to have these shoes. And I am sure that some incredibly well-dressed fashionista will be pounding the pavement in my shoes.

Damn her...lucky girl.

For awhile now, blogs have been splattered with artsy, sparkly nails and I have been late to jump on the bandwagon. More due to pure laziness than anything else. When it comes to my nails, I am a bit lacking. I always keep up my pedicures but only did my nails when I was at the nail salon, and of course, your manicure never lasts as long as your pedicure. So I am going to try and keep my nails up a bit more these days. Starting with something fancy.

A few weeks ago I was forwarded a coupon to ZOYA from my friend Marilyn. With this coupon you could pick 2 bottles of polish and only pay shipping costs. Good deal, huh? So I picked neutral colors Dulcinea (shown above) and Kendal (a light lilac) knowing that would be good colors for layering as well.

That's when China Glaze's Material Girl comes in. Little pink flecks of glittery goodness that sweeps over any color you choose. I can't help it - I love it.

Starting out suddle, but I have feeling more colors are coming my way!

22 Weeks

22 Weeks. Doing well. Although I am definitely starting to notice being pregnant. For a long time, I felt no kicks, or bubbles, or really anything. I have been extremely lucky - no morning sickness, just occasional tiredness so I really feel like I can't complain. But lately, by the end of the week I am totally beat. Both last Thursday and Friday I thought I was most likely going to face plant straight onto my keyboard, and if I had a conference call - forget about it.

So this weekend was taken in stride. Friday night I met my lovely girlfriends here to celebrate a friends new job. Saturday we had another ultrasound (baby Bender refuses to cooperate with the ultrasound tech and we have been back 3 times in the last 3 weeks), and then went to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I just read the book, and loved it. The movie was good, (Rooney was amazing, Daniel Craig - like porn for a pregnant girl) but more like a snapshot of what the book actually had to offer. Can't wait to delve into The girl who payed with fire.

Wearing Jbrand maternity jeans, Jcrew flannel, Pamela Love small tribal necklace, Tommy Hilfiger vest, AW Marion bag, and Tory Burch wedges.

Lately, I have really loved the top-buttoned collar that has been everywhere. Kinda preppy, kinda not. And easy for anyone to pull off. Everyone has a button up, (or borrow your husband/boyfriends), in their closet. Although I think my days of wearing my normal size button ups are quickly coming to end. Soon - buttoning up may not be an option!

Little Luxuries

Sometimes its the little luxuries in life that make me so happy ( I know - I'm a little shallow). But at least it allows you to own a little piece of the fashion empires you love without breaking the bank. It seems that when I buy something very expensive, a lot of the times, I worry about using it - like I might scratch it or spill something on it. Case in point - one of my very first big splurges - a pair of Louis Vuitton Cherry Blossom (circa 2002/2003) satin ballet flats. Their beautiful. Really, they are. In fact, they are so beautiful and adorable that it is a huge shame that they sit in their beautiful brown LV box, in my shoe closet, never able to go out and about and strut their stuff. But I am just too afraid that something will happen to them.

Not the case with these items. #1 - a Dominic Jones ring that Brett bought me for Christmas at The Outnet. And at 80% off, It was a huge discount, but still every penny worth it. I can wear it everyday without worrying that I will do something to ruin it. And #2 - my new Celine wallet. It's small, and compact, and can fit in the smaller handbags that I have been carrying for the last 6 months or so. But it's still Celine. Ands it awesome. And wasn't that expensive. And I love it.

Groundhog Days - Spring is coming

Ok, so Punxsutawny Phil ran back into his creepy little hole and decided that we have to endure 6 more weeks of winter. Well, with the temps hitting at least 45 degrees this entire week, I can handle it. This time last year us Chicagoans were buried in 20+inches of the white fluffy stuff, so with the sun shinning and temps only in the chilly category, I'll take it. But fashion wise, I am in the mood for Spring. Right now, because of the preggars belly, I am not scooping up too many new pieces (minus shoes and handbags of course!) but that doesn't mean I can't look and plan for the post-pregnancy era!

Here's some of my favorite eye candy for Spring. Loud florals and brights are a must have, and oh so many dresses to keep the fashion-obsessed Chicky occupied for hours!

The preppy boy look is one of my most favorites and very versatile. Plus flats are going to be a must have item for me for awhile, and loving these loafers!

Dainty little thigh high slit adds just the right amount of sexy! Still really feeling the ankle boots with the maxi dresses.

Stripes and snake prints? Couldn't love anymore.

Recipe #3 - Garbanzo Bean and Olive Tapenade

Back at it again. Third week, third recipe. This week, an easy dip that we could eat while lounging around the house and still get a little dose of veggies and protein. Garbanzo bean and olive tapenade, found while watching Giada at Home. I love her. I love her food. I love her kitchen. Brett loves to watch her too. He says he loves her "personalities". She is foxy, and wears adorably low cut shirts, so who could blame him?

Anyway, back to the recipe. So quick, so easy, so very yummy.

1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup pitted black olives, such as kalamata
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1/2 large lemon)
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon lemon zest
3/4 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary leaves
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Directions

In a food processor, combine the beans, olives, oil, parsley, lemon juice, honey, lemon zest, rosemary, and salt. Blend until smooth.

The recipe recommends serving with endive leaves, which would of been great. We had whole wheat pita bread and flat bread crackers, so that's how I served it. Also made a great dip for carrots!

Finally got to zest a lemon. Seriously, (and sadly), I have wanted to zest a lemon in the worst way! Not sure why I just didn't ever do it - had all the tools necessary - just never a reason. And I have to say, I was not disappointed. The fragrance alone was well worth it!

The final dish, served up with a sprig of Rosemary.

21 Weeks

Two things can be accomplished with this post. One - a picture at 21 weeks, where my belly has most definitley arrived and now growing quickly. Very, very quickly! As this is my first pregnancy, the body changes have been weird for me. For the 1st 3 months it seemed like nothing was happening. Then comes month 4, and I felt a bit like Santa, or maybe Homer Simpson. And now finally month 5, and I feel like I am actually a pregnant girl! Still not quite into maternity clothes but soon for sure. But have to say I am loving every minute. Last week we had our 20 week ultrasound, where we could of found out the sex. We have decided to wait - mostly Brett's choice, but I am now glad we are waiting. I couldn't know and not tell him, so have to hold out for a few more months! Although, secretly, I was trying to read the ultrasound for any tell-tale sign.

The #2 part of this post is a pretty exciting one too - especially if you have a soft spot for luxurious leather goods bought on the cheap. As soon as the sales seasons start, I stalk all the usual suspect websites (Barneys, Saks, Ssense, Opening Ceremony) for those "I soooo want to have but can't afford items". Usually there are one or two of the pieces that I have been drooling over on sale and I scoop them up with my uber-fast online shopping skills. This Proenza Schouler tote was no exception. I had to have it when the chance presented itself - and at 60% off, it was finally in my budget!

Isn't it gorgeous??? I love this bag. And it's roomy enough to carry all sorts of baby friendly items, right???

If I'm dreaming on that point, please refrain from pointing that out. Wouldn't want to ruin my delusion....

Just got back from Vegas, where I managed to score some insane deals (more on that later)! But one thing that sadly, I had to leave behind, was the Chloe Rose Brass Snake Ring. Even though we no longer live with snakes (thankfully!), I still have a small obsession with snake-themed jewelry, and this ring would have fit right in with my collection. I tried it on, and it was so lovely, but unfortunately my money for the trip was spent. So I will have to wait and save. But really, I love it, and hope to have it soon!

Recipe #2 - Egg and Cheese Poofs

So I am still on it. Recipe # 2. All Recipes Egg and Cheese poofs that were a perfect brunch time snack and thankfully the batch was large enough that Brett and I had plenty to freeze and reheat for breakfast or a power midday snack. These were so easy, and a real crowd pleaser. Plus the variation options of these are endless. This time around, just egg, cheese, chili's and bacon. Next time, maybe spinach and ricotta? Or veggie sausage and tomato?

20 Weeks

20 Weeks! Halfway point hit! Please excuse the iPhone photo. Haven't seen much daylight or any bit of warmish weather in a week so these were the photos I have. These were taken just at the beginning of my 20th week, when we were out the door to Brett's holiday party. Which by the way, I was told was not so formal (man terms) but really all the women who actually worked with Brett wore adorable, glitter-adorned LBD's or mermaid-esque sequin gowns. Yep, I was under-dressed. But, thankfully, not the only one. You could tell who all the women were who listened to their husbands. We were all a bit underdressed.

But truthfully, I liked this dress. Besides my Jbrand maternity leggings, this dress is the only other maternity wear I have bought. I found it at Topshop on sale for only $40! Couldn't beat it. Dressed it with Miu Miu ankle strap pumps and my A.Wang Marion bag. I have to say that so far, Topshop has been the place to shop for maternity wear. Affordable and totally on trend, so I don't feel frumpy dumpy everyday. The bump has officially shown so time to embrace all the cute pieces that are out there.

One thing I have noticed since becoming pregnant is that I wear a lot more makeup, and a lot more jewelry. Seems to be a everyday necessity to make up for the more than simple wardrobe, consisting of black leggings and not so fitted top, that has been my constant. This ring above is one my newest pieces. I picked it up back in December when I was at the International Gem and Jewelry show with my dear friend Sonia. Sadly, I sometimes suck at details, and I can't remember the stone type, but its big and bulky, and reminiscent of the southwest. I swear, since my trip to Austin, I craved the laid back look of jeans, t-shirt and boots with huge chunks of silver and natural stone jewelry dripping.

19 Weeks

Yep, almost halfway there! Pretty exciting time - albeit a little nerve wracking. Eagerly anticipating the first definite signs of life so I am rest assured all the time that this baby is doing great! I have felt some small flutters here or there, but not sure if that is that baby or the taco bell that I had for dinner. And on that note, I have to stop eating taco bell for dinner. Not exactly brainiac baby food!

So excited today is Friday! Athough the landscape is a bit different here today than when we snapped these pics a few days ago. We now have about 4 or 5 inches of snow, and the balmy January winter weather has split and left cold, frigid normal January in its place. Only for a few days though. Usually, I am a major whiner when it comes to the cold weather but so far this winter has been cake. So, I'll take it. And I am heading to Vegas in a week, so 65 degrees, here I come!

Lots to do this weekend. A badly needed haircut is in my future, although nothing drastic. Now, as my belly is quickly ever-expanding (along with other parts of me), is not the time for anything that might damper my self esteem. Brett's post-holiday work party is Saturday night which is sure to offer a very good meal, and Sunday is the 1st Packer's playoff game. Oh yeah, and our dresser is coming home, so lots and lots of nursery planning is in the works!

Wearing Jbrand maternity leggings(New BFF), vintage cowboy boots, Steven Alan Janis Hate, Alexander Wang Marion bag, Jcrew striped Henley, and Madewell cardigan.

Also, have to pick a easy and boy-friendly recipe for Sunday to continue with my resolution. Any suggestions? Brett is cooking the main dish, so accompaniments or appetizers is what I am thinking.

A New Year's Resoultion - Cinnamon and Honey Butter Crepes

I am not particularly good at keeping New Year's resolutions. Is anyone really? But since I soon will have a little one to feed, I have decided that my new years resolution for 2012 will be to cook something new every week. My husband is a wonderful cook, and spoils me so with his endless culinary delights, but it is time that I give it a try.

So for my first recipe, I actually made the only recipe that I know by heart, but haven't made in years. So here it is, Cinnamon and Honey butter crepes. The perfect Sunday morning brunch recipe. Very, very simple, incredibly tasty and damn easy to make!

Ingredients:

3/4 cup flour

3/4 cup milk

3 eggs

1 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper

1/2 cup honey butter (premade is fine)

cinnamon and sugar mixture

1 cup raspberries

1 cup blueberries

1 banana (sliced)

Directions:

Whisk flour, milk, eggs, salt and pepper in a medium mixing bowl. Heat a nonstick flat skillet on medium heat. Pour a little less than 1/4 cup of batter onto the pan and swirl it to coat the pan (making a circle like shape). Cook till it sets (the batter will blister a bit) and flip the crepe, cooking the opposite side about 30 seconds until the edge begin to curl up. Remove the crepe and repeat with the remaining batter.

To dress each crepe, melt the honey butter (I buy mine pre-made) until it is a liquid consistency and lightly brush the center of every crepe. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar lightly over the butter, and roll the crepe. When you have 3-4 per plate, top the crepes with mixed berries and sliced banana and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Sunday Night....so sweet, yet so bitter that Monday morning is looming around the corner. The weekend went, as always, way too quickly. The days were spent organizing the house, taking down the last of the holiday decorations, tromping through the lakeside with the boys, shopping for a maternity dress for a formal cocktail party (blah...not as fun as regular shopping) and having dinner with some of my best girls to celebrate a wonderful and dear friends birthday. All flew by way too fast.

This past Christmas I received some very beautiful gifts. Two that I squealed with excitement when I ripped open the glitter-adorned paper where my Alexander Wang Marion bag, from my sweet parents, and my Pamela Love small tribal necklace from my way too-good-to-me husband. My poor husband, I hounded him for this necklace endlessly knowing it was selling out fast and he finally tracked down the silver version from Court in New York.

Both of these are items that I drooled over for months once I laid my eyes on them, and now I can treasure them always as part of my collection!

Beginning to Nest

Happy Belated New Year! Good thing my resolution has not been to keep up with this blog, because its just not happening! I have had major baby on the brain, and my focus of the usual shoe shopping has reverted to all things baby. Especially Nursery. In fact, I have been a bit obsessive about it. Saving every image I can find, every clipping of cute wall decor and scouring every children's site for the perfect bedding. I can't help myself - all too exciting!

The one piece that Brett and I both agreed on immediately was that we wanted a beautiful, vintage dresser (acting as a changing table) to act as a focal point for the nursery. Something unique. Something not found at the big box stores. But still had to remain gender neutral (as we are waiting for the big surprise!) The picture above, and those below served as our inspiration!

Yellow is my favorite color and I can not tell you how much I love these two dresses. I think yellow will most definitely work itself into the color palette.

The weathered effect on the dresser below is lovely - perfect for boy or girl!

Well, after a few weeks of searching everywhere from ebay to craigslist, we stumbled upon this beauty below. I simply cannot wait to build our baby's room around it!

Stocked Up

Stocking Stuffers are an essential part of the Christmas Morning tradition in my mind, and still one of my favorite things to open. We no longer have them at my parents house, but Brett and I still love stuffing our cutely hung stockings and opening to our hearts delights.
