Twins Have The Injury Bug Heading Into Tonight’s Game

The Twins are fighting injuries in a big way right now.

Of course it all started with Joe Nathan undergoing season-ending surgery before the season even started.

Then of course the other big one is Justin Morneau who has been out of action for nearly 2 months now because of the effects of a concussion.

Kevin Slowey is out of the pitching lineup because of an injury.

40 year old DH Jim Thome is banged up, and will not be in the lineup tonight.

Last night Jason Kubel got hit on the wrist, and even though it’s not broken (fortunately), his wrist and hand are swollen, and he’s listed as day-to-day.

New Twins reliever Brian Fuentes had his back “lock up” on him during warm-ups yesterday, and he’s not going to be available for a couple of days.

Orlando Hudson is having problems with his ankle, and although he played last night and insists that nothing is

wrong, manager Ron Gardenhire said it was obvious that his ankle was bothering him.

Tonight’s lineup:

3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Michael Cuddyer, 1B
5. Delmon Young, LF

I really, really, REALLY don’t like having a lineup without Morneau, Kubel, or Thome.

Hopefully Francisco Liriano has a good night.

Will Manny Make A Difference For The White Sox?

Manny Ramirez is scheduled to join the Chicago White Sox tonight in Cleveland for their game against the Indians. He’ll likely be in the lineup as a DH tonight. The White Sox are hoping that Manny gives them enough of a spark in the final 31 games of this season to catch up with the Twins.

Minnesota currently has a 4 game lead over the White Sox.

Will Manny’s bat really be enough to put the White Sox over the top?

To be honest, I really don’t think so.

Right now, the Chicago White Sox have the 5th best team batting average in the entire Majors at .271. They’re number seven in the majors with total runs scored. They’re number seven in the majors with total home runs. They’re number 6 in the majors with total RBIs. They’re number six in the majors in slugging percentage. These are the kinds of things that Manny will help the team improve…

… but they’re already good at those things.

Of course improvement is always welcome, but the question in this situation is whether or not the improvement will be enough to put them over the top.

If the White Sox are going to rely on one batter to bolster their stats, he’s going to have to hit VERY well. The Twins are better than the White Sox in many of those hitting stats… better batting average, better on base percentage, more RBIs, more runs… and the Twins are doing it all without Justin Morneau.

Of course we’re leaving out one important factor here, as well…

Will Manny Ramirez come in ready to play hard and produce for the White Sox? Or will Manny decide that he’d rather “be Manny”?
